A group of prototype integrated circuits are presented for a wireless neural recording micro-system. An inductive link was built for transcutaneous wireless power transfer and data transmission. Power and data were transmitted by a pair of coils on a same carrier frequency. The integrated receiver circuitry was composed of a full-wave bridge rectifier, a voltage regulator, a date recovery circuit, a clock recovery circuit and a power detector. The amplifiers were designed with a limited bandwidth for neural signals acquisition. An integrated FM transmitter was used to transmit the extracted neural signals to external equipments. 16.5 mW power and 50 bps - 2.5 Kbps command data can be received over 1 MHz carrier within 10 mm. The total gain of 60 dB was obtained by the preamplifier and a main amplifier at 0.95Hz - 13.41 KHz with 0.215 mW power dissipation. The power consumption of the 100 MHz ASK transmitter is 0.374 mW. All the integrated circuits operated under a 3.3 V power supply except the voltage regulator.

The semiconductor microlasers based on the equilateral triangle resonator (ETR) can be fabricated from the edge-emitting laser wafer by dry-etching technique, and the directional emission can be obtained by connecting an output waveguide to one of the vertices of the ETR. We investigate the mode characteristics, especially the mode quality factor, for the ETR with imperfect vertices, which is inevitable in the real technique process. The numerical simulations show that the confined modes can still have a high quality factor in the ETR with imperfect vertices. We can expect that the microlasers is a suitable light source for photonic integrated circuits.

The development of optical network demands integrated arid multiple functionality modules to lowing cost and acquire highly reliability. Among the various contender materials to be photonic integrated circuits platform, silicon exhibits dominant characteristics and is the most promising platform materials. The paper compares the characteristics of some candidate materials with silicon and reviews recent progress in silicon based photonic integration technology. Tile challenges to silicon for optical integration for optical networking application arc also indicated.

Three new compounds, [ZnL1.5(H2O)(SO4)]. 6H(2)O 1, [ZnL1.5(H2O)(2)][NO3](2). 2H(2)O 2 and [CdL1.5(H2O)(2)(SO4)]. 4H(2)O 3 were obtained from self-assembly of the corresponding metal salts with 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole) (L). In both 1 and 2 zinc ion is five-co-ordinated, showing a less-common trigonal bipyramidal co-ordination polyhedron, while cadmium ion of 3 is six-co-ordinated with a common octahedral arrangement. The sulfate ions of 1 and 3 are co-ordinated, however the nitrate ions of 2 are not. Each of the three compounds is composed of a (6, 3) network with the hexagonal smallest circuit containing six metal ions and six L; each L is co-ordinated to two metal ions, acting as a bridging ligand. In 1 the 2-D sheet of (6, 3) networks is interpenetrated in an inclined mode by symmetry related, identical sheets to give an interlocked 3-D structure, while the (6, 3) networks of both 2 and 3 stack in a parallel fashion to construct frameworks having channels.

With the push towards sub-micron technology, transistor models have become increasingly complex. The number of components in integrated circuits has forced designer's efforts and skills towards higher levels of design. This has created a gap between design expertise and the performance demands increasingly imposed by the technology. To alleviate this problem, software tools must be developed that provide the designer with expert advice on circuit performance and design. This requires a theory that links the intuitions of an expert circuit analyst with the corresponding principles of formal theory (i.e. algebra, calculus, feedback analysis, network theory, and electrodynamics), and that makes each underlying assumption explicit.

This report is concerned with the problem of achieving flexibility (additivity, modularity) and efficiency (performance, expertise) simultaneously in one AI program. It deals with the domain of elementary electronic circuit design. The proposed solution is to provide a deduction-driven problem solver with built-in-control-structure concepts. This problem solver and its knowledge base in the applicaitn areas of design and electronics are descrbed. The prgram embodying it is being used to explore the solutionof some modest problems in circuit design. It is concluded that shallow reasoning about problem-solver plans is necessary for flexibility, and can be implemented with reasonable efficiency.

We show that if a language is recognized within certain error bounds by constant-depth quantum circuits over a finite family of gates, then it is computable in (classical) polynomial time. In particular, our results imply EQNC^0 ⊆ P, where EQNC^0 is the constant-depth analog of the class EQP. On the other hand, we adapt and extend ideas of Terhal and DiVincenzo [?] to show that, for any family

Small depth quantum circuits have proved to be unexpectedly powerful in comparison to their classical counterparts. We survey some of the recent work on this and present some open problems.

We define and construct efficient depth universal and almost size universal quantum circuits. Such circuits can be viewed as general purpose simulators for central classes of quantum circuits and can be used to capture the computational power of the circuit class being simulated. For depth we construct universal circuits whose depth is the same order as the circuits being simulated. For size, there is a log factor blow-up in the universal circuits constructed here. We prove that this construction is nearly optimal. Our results apply to a number of well-studied quantum circuit classes.

We present a technique to derive depth lower bounds for quantum circuits. The technique is based on the observation that in circuits without ancillae, only a few input states can set all the control qubits of a Toffoli gate to 1. This can be used to selectively remove large Toffoli gates from a quantum circuit while keeping the cumulative error low. We use the technique to give another proof that parity cannot be computed by constant depth quantum circuits without ancillæ.

A neuroanatomical parcellation system is described which encompasses the entire cerebral cortex and the cerebellum. The cortical system modified version of the scheme described by Caviness et al. (1996) and is designed particularly for studies of speech processing. The cerebellum is parcellated into 6 cortical regions of interest (ROIs) and an ROI representing the deep cerebellar nuclei in each hemisphere. The boundaries of each ROI are based on individual anatomical markers that are clearly visible from standard structural MRI acquistions. The system permits averaginh of functional imaging data sets from multiple sujects while accounting for individual anatomical variability. Used in conjuction with region-of-interest analysis techniques such as that described by Nieto-Castanon et al. (2003), the parcellation system provides a more powerful means of analyzing functional data.
