The aim of this work is to address the activation process of a high temperature shift (HTS) catalyst, composed of Fe2O3/Cr2O3/CuO, by analyzing it before activation (HTS-V) and after activation (HTS-A) using complementary characterization techniques. The textural and morphological characterizations were done by transmission electron rnicroscopy (TEM) and nitrogen physisorption at 77 K; crystallographic structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD); electronic structure was analyzed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and the chemical composition of the catalyst`s surface was obtained by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The investigation pointed out that the HTS-V catalyst presents good textural and morphological properties, which are not deeply affected by the activation process (sample HTS-A). The iron oxide phase in the HTS-V catalyst is hematite whereas in HTS-A catalyst is magnetite with Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio close to the expected value (0.5). For both samples, the Cr ions seem to be incorporated in the iron oxide lattice with higher concentration at particle surface. In the HTS-V catalyst, the Cu ions have oxidation number II and occupy in average distorted octahedral sites; after the activation, the Cu ions are partially reduced, suggesting that the reduction of the Cu species is complex. The performance of La(2-x)Ce(x)Cu(1-y)Zn(y)O(4) perovskites as catalysts for the high temperature water-gas shift reaction (H T-W G S R) was investigated. The catalysts were characterized by EDS, XRD, BET surface area, TPR, and XANES. The results showed that all the perovskites exhibited the La(2)CuO(4) orthorhombic structure, so the Pechini method is suitable for the preparation of pure perovskite. However, the La(1.90)Ce(0.10)CuO(4) perovskite alone, when calcined at 350/700 degrees C, also showed a (La(0.935)Ce(0.065))(2)CuO(4) perovskite with tetragonal structure, which produced a surface area higher than the other perovskites. The perovskites that exhibited the best catalytic performance were those calcined at 350/700 degrees C and, among these, La(1.90)Ce(0.10)CuO(4) was outstanding, probably because of the high surface area associated with the presence of the (La(0.935)Ce(0.065))(2)CuO(4) perovskite with tetragonal structure and orthorhombic La(2)CuO(4) phase.

The performance of La(2-x)M(x)CuO(4) perovskites (where M = Ce, Ca or Sr) as catalysts for the water-gas shift reaction was investigated at 290 degrees C and 360 degrees C. The catalysts were characterized by EDS, XRD, N(2) adsorption-desorption, XPS and XANES. The XRD results showed that all the perovskites exhibited a single phase (the presence of perovskite structure), suggesting the incorporation of metals in the perovskite structure. The XPS and XANES results showed the presence of Cu(2+) on the surface. The perovskites that exhibited the best catalytic performance were La(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4) perovslcites, with CO conversions of 85%-90%. Moreover, these perovskites have higher surface areas and larger amounts of Cu on the surface. And Ce has a higher filled energy level than the other metals, increasing the energy of the valence band of Ce and providing more electrons for the reaction. Besides, the La(1.80)Ca(0.20)CuO(4) perovskite showed a good catalytic performance.

This paper describes an investigation on CuO and CuO-ZnO catalysts supported on CeO(2) and CeO(2)-La(2)O(3) oxides, which were designed for the low temperature water-gas shift reaction (WGSR). Bulk catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation of metal nitrates and characterized by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface area (by the BET method), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and in situ X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). The catalysts` activities were tested in the forward WGSR, and the CuO/CeO(2) catalyst presented the best catalytic performance. The reasons for this are twofold: (1) the presence of Zn inhibits the interaction between Cu and Ce ions, and (2) lanthanum oxide forms a solid solution with cerium oxide, which will cause a decrease in the surface area of the catalysts. Also the CuO/CeO(2) catalyst presented the highest Cu content on the surface, which could influence its catalytic behavior. Additionally, the Cu and Cu(1+) species could influence the catalytic activity via a reduction-oxidation mechanism, corroborating to the best catalytic performance of the Cu/Ce catalyst. Solvents represent an important group of environmental pollutants to which people are exposed daily in the workplace. The physico chemical properties of solvents may result in disturbances to cellular structures, including damage to DNA. However, the effects of mixtures of solvents are not well known. Mutations caused by environmental agents are related to cancer development and other degenerative diseases. The work in a research laboratory that uses several types of solvents is equally predisposed to these hazards. In this study, we evaluated the mutagenicity of urine from 29 subjects exposed occupationally to solvents in a chemistry research laboratory and 29 subjects without occupational exposure (controls). Urine samples were collected in polyethylene containers at the end of the work shift. For the concentration and extraction of urine samples the XAD-2 resin was used with acetone as an eluting agent. Several strains of Salmonella typhimurium (TA100, TA98, TA97a, TA1535, YG1024) should be used to assess mutagenic susceptibilities among workers exposed to organic solvents. Different doses of extract (1.5; 3.0; 6.0 and 12.0 m/ equivalents of urine per plate) were tested on S. typhimurium strains TA100 and YG 1024, with and without metabolic activation. The mutagenic activity, measured in Salmonella typhimurium YGI1024 with S9 mix, was significantly greater in urine from workers than from controls (p <= 0.05). These results indicate the relevance of using biomarkers to assess the risk of occupational exposure to organic solvents.

Homogeneous catalysts prepared from rhodium trichloride in aqueous aromatic amines have been shown to reduce C-CI bonds under mild water gas shift conditions (T=100 degrees C, P-CO = 1.0 atm). In a 4-picoline/water solvent mixture, 1,2-dichloroethane is reduced to ethylene and ethane in yields compatible with the consumption of the reducing agent CO and with the formation of CO2. Variation of the catalyst solutions by using different substituted pyridines shows a pattern of catalytic activity parallel to that reported previously for H-2 production from the shift reaction, There is a moderate dependence of activity on the basicity of the aromatic amine, but a methyl group at the alpha-position exercises a strong negative steric effect. Long term studies show decrease of the activity with the time perhaps due to the build up of chloride in the medium. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

CCTO thin films were deposited on Pt(1 1 1)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates using a chemical (polymeric precursor) and pressure method. Pressure effects on CCTO thin films were evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and optical properties which revealed that a pressure film (PF) is denser and more homogeneous than a chemical film (CF). Pressure also causes a decrease in the band gap and an increase in the photoluminescence (PL) emission of CCTO films which suggests that the pressure facilitates the displacement of Ti in the titanate clusters and the charge transference from TiO6 to [TiO5V0z], [TiO5V0z] to [CaO11V0z] and [TiO5V0z] to [CuO4]x. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Top predators in the marine environment integrate chemical signals acquired from their prey that reflect both the species consumed and the regions from which the prey were taken. These chemical tracers—stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen; persistent organic pollutant (POP) concentrations, patterns and ratios; and fatty acid profiles—were measured in blubber biopsy samples from North Pacific killer whales (Orcinus orca) (n = 84) and were used to provide further insight into their diet, particularly for the offshore group, about which little dietary information is available. The offshore killer whales were shown to consume prey species that were distinctly different from those of sympatric resident and transient killer whales. In addition, it was confirmed that the offshores forage as far south as California. Thus, these results provide evidence that the offshores belong to a third killer whale ecotype. Resident killer whale populations showed a gradient in stable isotope profiles from west (central Aleutians) to east (Gulf of Alaska) that, in part, can be attributed to a shift from off-shelf to continental shelf-based prey. Finally, stable isotope ratio results, supported by field observations, showed that the diet in spring and summer of eastern Aleutian Island transient killer whales is apparently not composed exclusively of Steller sea lions.

In this study more than 450 natural sapphire samples (most of basaltic type) collected from 19 different areas were examined. They are from Dak Nong, Dak Lak, Quy Chau, two unknown sources from the north (Vietnam); Bo Ploi, Khao Ploi Waen (Thailand); Ban Huay Sai (Laos); Australia; Shandong (China); Andapa, Antsirabe, Nosibe (Madagascar); Ballapana (Sri Lanka); Brazil; Russia; Colombia; Tansania and Malawi. rnThe samples were studied on internal characteristics, chemical compositions, Raman-, luminescence-, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR)-, and ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-Vis-NIR)- spectroscopy. The internal features of these sapphire samples were observed and identified by gemological microscope, con focal micro Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. The major and minor elements of the samples were determined by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and the trace elements by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). rnThe structural spectra of sapphire were investigated by con focal Raman spectroscopy. The FTIR spectroscopy was used to study the vibration modes of OH-groups and also to determine hydrous mineral inclusions in sapphire. The UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy was used to analyze the cause of sapphire color. rnNatural sapphires contain many types of mineral inclusions. Typically, they are iron-containing inclusions like goethite, ilmenite, hematite, magnetite or silicate minerals commonly feldspar, and often observed in sapphires from Asia countries, like Dak Nong, Dak Lak in the south of Vietnam, Ban Huay Sai (Laos), Khao Ploi Waen and Bo Ploi (Thailand) or Shandong (China). Meanwhile, CO2-diaspore inclusions are normally found in sapphires from Tansania, Colombia, or the north of Vietnam like Quy Chau. rnIron is the most dominant element in sapphire, up to 1.95 wt.% Fe2O3 measured by EPMA and it affects spectral characteristics of sapphire.rnThe Raman spectra of sapphire contain seven peaks (2A1g + 5Eg). Two peaks at about 418.3 cm-1 and 577.7 cm-1 are influenced by high iron content. These two peaks shift towards smaller wavenumbers corresponding to increasing iron content. This shift is showed by two equations y(418.3)=418.29-0.53x andy(577.7)=577.96-0.75x, in which y is peak position (cm-1) and x is Fe2O3 content (wt.%). By exploiting two these equations one can estimate the Fe2O3 contents of sapphire or corundum by identifying the respective Raman peak positions. Determining the Fe2O3 content in sapphire can help to distinguish sapphires from different origins, e.g. magmatic and metamorphic sapphire. rnThe luminescence of sapphire is characterized by two R-lines: R1 at about 694 nm and R2 at about 692 nm. This characteristic is also influenced by high iron content. The peak positions of two R-lines shift towards to smaller wavelengths corresponding to increasing of iron content. This correlation is showed by two equations y(R_2 )=692.86-0.049x and y(R_1 )=694.29-0.047x, in which y is peak position (nm) of respective R-lines and x is Fe2O3 content (wt.%). Two these equations can be applied to estimate the Fe2O3 content of sapphire and help to separate sapphires from different origins. The luminescence is also applied for determination of the remnant pressure or stress around inclusions in Cr3+-containing corundum by calibrating a 0-pressure position in experimental techniques.rnThe infrared spectra show the presence of vibrations originating from OH-groups and hydrous mineral inclusions in the range of 2500-4000 cm-1. Iron has also an effect upon the main and strongest peak at about 3310 cm-1. The 3310 cm-1 peak is shifted to higher wavenumber when iron content increases. This relationship is expressed by the equation y(3310)=0.92x+3309.17, in which y is peak position of the 3310 cm-1 and x is Fe2O3 content (wt.%). Similar to the obtained results in Raman and luminescence spectra, this expression can be used to estimate the Fe2O3 content and separate sapphires from different origins. rnThe UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectra point out the strong and sharp peaks at about 377, 387, and 450 nm related to dispersed Fe3+, a broad band around 557 and 600 nm related to intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) Fe2+/Ti4+, and a broader band around 863 nm related to IVCT of Fe2+/Fe3+. rnGenerally, sapphires from different localities were completely investigated on internal features, chemical compounds, and solid spectral characteristics. The results in each part contribute for identifying the iron content and separate sapphires from different localities order origins. rn

For understanding the major- and minor-groove hydration patterns of DNAs and RNAs, it is important to understand the local solvation of individual nucleobases at the molecular level. We have investigated the 2-aminopurine center dot H2O. monohydrate by two-color resonant two-photon ionization and UV/UV hole-burning spectroscopies, which reveal two isomers, denoted A and B. The electronic spectral shift delta nu of the S-1 <- S-0 transition relative to bare 9H-2-aminopurine (9H-2AP) is small for isomer A (-70 cm(-1)), while that of isomer B is much larger (delta nu = 889 cm(-1)). B3LYP geometry optimizations with the TZVP basis set predict four cluster isomers, of which three are doubly H-bonded, with H2O acting as an acceptor to a N-H or -NH2 group and as a donor to either of the pyrimidine N sites. The "sugar-edge" isomer A is calculated to be the most stable form with binding energy D-e = 56.4 kJ/mol. Isomers B and C are H-bonded between the -NH2 group and pyrimidine moieties and are 2.5 and 6.9 kJ/mol less stable, respectively. Time-dependent (TD) B3LYP/TZVP calculations predict the adiabatic energies of the lowest (1)pi pi* states of A and B in excellent agreement with the observed 0(0)(0) bands; also, the relative intensities of the A and B origin bands agree well with the calculated S-0 state relative energies. This allows unequivocal identification of the isomers. The R2PI spectra of 9H-2AP and of isomer A exhibit intense low-frequency out-of-plane overtone and combination bands, which is interpreted as a coupling of the optically excited (1)pi pi* state to the lower-lying (1)n pi* dark state. In contrast, these overtone and combination bands are much weaker for isomer B, implying that the (1)pi pi* state of B is planar and decoupled from the (1)n pi* state. These observations agree with the calculations, which predict the (1)n pi* above the (1)pi pi* state for isomer B but below the (1)pi pi* for both 9H-2AP and isomer A.

Two distinct classes of neurons have been examined in the nervous system of Aplysia. The membrane properties of these neurons are regulated by intracellular signalling molecules in both a short-term and a long-term fashion.^ The role of the phosphatidylinositol cycle in the control of neuronal properties was studied in a class of bursting pacemaker cells, the left upper-quadrant bursting neurons (cells L2, L3, L4, and L6) of the abdominal ganglion of Aplysia. These cells display a regular burst-firing pattern that is controlled by cyclic changes of intracellular Ca$\sp{2+}$ that occur during the bursting rhythm. The characteristic bursting pattern of these neurons occurs within a range of membrane potentials ($-35$ to $-50$ mV) called the pacemaker range. Intracellular pressure injection of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP$\sb3$) altered the bursting rhythm of the bursting cells. Injection of IP$\sb3$ induced a brief depolarization that was followed by a long-lasting (2-15 min) hyperpolarization. When cells were voltage-clamped at potentials within the pacemaker range, injection of IP$\sb3$ generally induced a biphasic response that had a total duration of 2-15 min. An initial inward shift in holding current (I$\sb{\rm in}$), which lasted 5-120 sec, was followed by a slow outward shift in holding current (I$\sb{\rm out}$). At membrane potentials more negative than $-40$ mV, I$\sb{\rm in}$ was associated with a small and relatively voltage-independent increase in membrane conductance. I$\sb{\rm in}$ was not blocked by bath application of TTX or Co$\sp{2+}$. Although I$\sb{\rm in}$ was activated by injection of IP$\sb3$, it was not blocked by iontophoretic injection of ethyleneglycol-bis-(beta-aminoethyl ether), N, N$\sp\prime$-tetraacetic acid (EGTA) sufficient to block the Ca$\sp{2+}$-activated inward tail current (I$\sb{\rm B}$).^ Long-term (lasting at least 24 hours) effects of adenylate cyclase activation were examined in a well characterized class of mechanosensory neurons in Aplysia. The injected cells were analyzed 24 hours later by two-electrode voltage-clamp techniques. We found that K$\sp+$ currents of these cells were reduced 24 hours after injection of cAMP. The currents that were reduced by cAMP were very similar to those found to be reduced 24 hours after behavioral sensitization. These results suggest that cAMP is part of the intracellular signal that induces long-term sensitization in Aplysia. (Abstract shortened with permission of author.) ^

We report S concentrations and relative proportions of (SO4)2- and S2- in OL- and CPX-hosted glass inclusions and in host glassy lapilli from Miocene basaltic hyaloclastites drilled north and south of Gran Canaria during ODP Leg 157. Compositions of glass inclusions and lapilli resemble those of subaerial Miocene shield basalts on Gran Canaria and comprise mafic to more evolved tholeiitic to alkali basalt and basanite (10.3-3.7 wt.% MgO, 44.5-56.9 wt.% SiO2). Glass inclusions fall into three groups based on their S concentrations: a high-sulfur group (1050 to 5810 ppm S), an intermediate-sulfur group (510 to 1740 ppm S), and a low-sulfur group (<500 ppm S). The most S-rich inclusions have the highest and nearly constant proportion of sulfur dissolved as sulfate determined by electron microprobe measurements of SKa peak shift. Their average S6+/S_total value is 0.75+/-0.09, unusually high for ocean island basalt magmas. The low-sulfur group inclusions have low S6+/S_total ratios (0.08+/-0.05), whereas intermediate sulfur group inclusions show a wide range of S6+/S_total (0.05-0.83). Glassy lapilli and their crystal-hosted glass inclusions with S concentrations of 50 to 1140 ppm S have very similar S6+/S_total ratios of 0.36+/-0.06 implying that sulfur degassing does not affect the proportion of (SO4)2- and S2- in the magma. The oxygen fugacities estimated from S6+/S_total ratios and from Fe3+/Fe2+ ratios in spinel inclusions range from NNO-1.1 to NNO+1.8. The origin of S-rich magmas is unclear. We discuss (1) partial melting of a mantle source at relatively oxidized fO2 conditions, and (2) magma contamination by seawater either directly or through magma interaction with seawater-altered Jurassic oceanic crust. The intermediate sulfur group inclusions represent undegassed or slightly degassed magmas similar to submarine OIB glasses, whereas the low-sulfur group inclusions are likely to have formed from magmas significantly degassed in near-surface reservoirs. Mixing of these degassed magmas with stored volatile-rich ones or volatile-rich magma replenishing the chamber filled by partially degassed magmas may produce hybrid melts with strongly varying S concentrations and S6+/S_total ratios.

The Arabian Sea off the Pakistan continental margin is characterized by one of the world's largest oxygen minimum zones (OMZ). The lithology and geochemistry of a 5.3 m long gravity core retrieved from the lower boundary of the modern OMZ (956 m water depth) were used to identify late Holocene changes in oceanographic conditions and the vertical extent of the OMZ. While the lower part of the core (535 - 465 cm, 5.04 - 4.45 cal kyr BP, Unit 3) is strongly bioturbated indicating oxic bottom water conditions, the upper part of the core (284 - 0 cm, 2.87 cal kyr BP to present, Unit 1) shows distinct and well-preserved lamination, suggesting anoxic bottom waters. The transitional interval from 465 to 284 cm (4.45 - 2.87 cal kyr BP, Unit 2) contains relicts of lamination which are in part intensely bioturbated. These fluctuations in bioturbation intensity suggest repetitive changes between anoxic and oxic/suboxic bottom-water conditions between 4.45 - 2.87 cal kyr BP. Barium excess (Baex) and total organic carbon (TOC) contents do not explain whether the increased TOC contents found in Unit 1 are the result of better preservation due to low BWO concentrations or if the decreased BWO concentration is a result of increased productivity. Changes in salinity and temperature of the outflowing water from the Red Sea during the Holocene influenced the water column stratification and probably affected the depth of the lower boundary of the OMZ in the northern Arabian Sea. Even if we cannot prove certain scenarios, we propose that the observed downward shift of the lower boundary of the OMZ was also impacted by a weakened Somali Current and a reduced transport of oxygen-rich Indian Central Water into the Arabian Sea, both as a response to decreased summer insolation and the continuous southward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone during the late Holocene.
