Análise da correlação entre a angulação (mesiodistal) dos caninos e a inclinação (vestibulolingual) dos incisivos

OBJETIVO: avaliar o nível de correlação entre a angulação dos caninos e a inclinação dos incisivos. MÉTODOS: a angulação mesiodistal dos caninos e a inclinação vestibulolingual dos incisivos foram obtidas em um programa digital gráfico (Imagetool®), a partir de fotografias padronizadas dos modelos de 60 pacientes. A inclinação dos incisivos foi, ainda, avaliada pela cefalometria lateral. RESULTADOS: o erro casual mostrou uma variação em torno de 2° nas medidas feitas nos modelos (1,8–2,5º), enquanto o erro sistemático, avaliado pela teste de correlação intraclasse, revelou uma excelente reprodutibilidade para ambos os métodos empregados (p<0,001, r=0,84–0,96). Testes de correlação linear revelaram uma correlação positiva significativa entre a angulação dos caninos e a inclinação dos incisivos para a arcada superior (r=0,3, p<0,05), e mais significativa para a arcada inferior (r=0,46–0,51, p<0,001), quando ambas foram mensuradas nos modelos. Entretanto, quando a inclinação dos incisivos foi examinada pela cefalometria, o nível de correlação foi estatisticamente insignificante para os incisivos superiores (r=-0,06–0,21, p>0,05) e variou bastante na arcada inferior (r=0,14–0,50), dependendo da grandeza correlacionada. CONCLUSÃO: ratifica-se a introdução de mudanças na angulação dos caninos com o intuito de acompanhar as compensações observadas na inclinação dos incisivos, principalmente na arcada inferior.

Evolução geológica das sequências do embasamento do Cinturão Araguaia na região de Paraíso do Tocantins (TO), Brasil

Estudos isotópicos baseados nas metodologias Pb-Pb em zircão e Sm/Nd (rocha total), permitiram avanços no entendimento do quadro geológico evolutivo e litoestratigráfico do embasamento do segmento sul do Cinturão Araguaia. Os processos geológicos identificados aconteceram a partir do Arqueano (2,6 Ga e T_DM 2,78 – 3,25 Ga) e se estenderam até o Neoproterozoico. Os ortognaisses do Complexo Rio_dos Mangues posicionam-se no Paleoproterozoico (2,05 – 2,08 Ga) e T_DM 2,35 – 2,21 Ga. Um forte encurtamento crustal e fusão parcial de compartimentos isolados e espessados, gerou corpos ígneos de 1,85 e 1,82 Ga e o Granito Serrote (1,86 Ga), que provêm de fontes entre 2,50 e 2,43 Ga. No final do Mesoproterozoico a região foi marcada por processos tafrogenéticos, evidenciados por magmatismo máfico e alcalino (1,05 Ga) e bacias deposicionais, como a que acolheu os sedimentos que originaram as supracrustais do Cinturão Araguaia. No Neoproterozoico, através da inversão nas condições geodinâmicas, ocorreu novo processo de encurtamento/espessamento crustal com fusões que originaram expressivas massas batolíticas (Granitos Matança e Santa Luzia). O Cinturão Araguaia foi edificado a partir dessa movimentação tectônica. O transporte de massas tectônicas no sentido do Cráton Amazônico teria ocorrido, resultando na atual arquitetura em que se encontram as várias unidades lito-estratigráficas, organizadas sob a forma de lascas imbricadas.

Avaliação ultrassonográfica dos efeitos da acupuntura na involução uterina em cadelas

The aim of this study was to evaluate, by means of ultrasound exam, acupuncture effects on uterine involution during the postpartum period in bitches with electroacupuncture. The phenomenon of eutocic uterine involution was studied in 16 bitches, randomly divided into two groups of eight animals each. Group 1 (G1) was treated with electric stimulation (electroacupuncture) of the needle at the points SP6, L3, Bai Hui, TB1, B23, B26, and group 2 (G2), the control group, received treatment in Sham points (placebo points), also with electrical stimuli. The monitoring of the phenomenon of uterine involution was performed by ultrasonography on days 0 (partum), 1, 3, 7 and 14 postpartum. We used SAS statistical analysis method, in order to compare the groups. The results of ultrasound examinations (mean and standard deviations in cm) for the period of observation were as follows: G1: 0.30 ± 0.01 (P), 2.08 ± 0.21 (LU), 4.13 ± 0.23 (DU) and G2: 0.31 ± 0.01 (P) 1.82 ± 0.09 (LU), 3.92 ± 0.11 (DU). We concluded that electroacupuncture affected uterine tone (lasting and uniform at the end of treatment). Electroacupuncture produces a positive tone in the uterus, aiding at the prevention of puerperal diseases.

Multivariate analysis of the temporal variability of sugarcane ripening in south-eastern Brazil

Color degradation of acrylic resin denture teeth as a function of liquid diet: ultraviolet-visible reflection analysis

The effect of different beverages on acrylic resin denture teeth color degradation is evaluated. Ten acrylic resin denture teeth brands were evaluated: Art Plus (AP), Biolux (BX), Biotone IPN (BI), Magister (MG), Mondial 6 (MD), Premium 6 (PR), SR Vivodent PE (SR), Trilux (TR), Trubyte Biotone (TB), and Vipi Dent Plus (VP). Teeth were immersed in staining solutions (coffee, cola, and orange juice) or artificial saliva (control) (n = 6) for 1, 7, 15, or 30 days. Specimen colors were evaluated spectrophotometrically based on the Commission Internationale d'Eclairage L*a*b* system. Color differences (Delta E) were calculated between the baseline and post-staining results. Data were evaluated by analysis of variance and Tukey test (alpha = 0.05). BI (1.82 +/- 0.95) and TR (1.78 +/- 0.72) teeth exhibited the greatest Delta E values, while BX (0.88 +/- 0.43) and MD (1.09 +/- 0.44) teeth were the lowest, regardless of solution and measurement period, and were different from BI and TR teeth (P < 0.05). Cola and coffee promoted higher denture teeth color alterations than orange juice and saliva (P < 0.05). Saliva generated the lowest denture teeth color alterations. Greater immersion times caused higher denture teeth color changes. The lifespan of removable dentures and the aesthetic satisfaction of several edentulous patients may be increased with the use of stain-resistant artificial denture teeth. (C) The Authors.

Current outlook and future perspectives of beef production in Brazil

Brazil is the world's largest beef exporter with the world's largest commercial cattle herd; however, the production cycle needs to be more efficient to supply internal and external demands in the future. Feedlot operations are currently a reality for the Brazilian beef cattle industry; nonetheless the beef cattle industry in Brazil is still based on grass-fed animals in which the Nellore breed predominates. At some point this constitutes an important advantage for Brazilian beef exportations because some countries look for “natural beef.” Brazilian packing plants regulate the use of antibiotics, especially ionophores used as growth promoters, on farms certified to export beef to European countries. In addition, the use of any implant or beta-agonist for cattle is forbidden in Brazil. From 1970 to 2006, the Brazilian bovine herd increased at 2.04%/year, total pasture at 0.07%/year, area with cultivated pasture at 3.5%/year, and ratio of animals/hectare of total pasture at 1.97%/year, whereas the area with natural pasture decreased at 2.26%/year. These trends alleviate some of the pressure on Brazilian authorities with respect to deforestation of the Amazon forest. Although Brazil had the greatest growth rate of enteric methane emissions, it also had the greatest growth rate of beef production, resulting in Brazil having a negative growth rate (–1.82%/year) of methane emissions per unit of product (kilogram of methane/kilogram of beef).
