Tendo presente a relação que o discurso estabelece com a sociedade como um todo, este artigo procura analisar o modo como a monarquia britânica representou o segundo casamento do Príncipe Carlos e o modo como os media construíram os relatos do acontecimento desde 10 de Fevereiro a 9 de Abril de 2005 relativamente a assuntos mais vastos, como sejam as relações de poder, as estruturas económicas dos jornais e a cultura popular. Foi dada particular relevância aos aspectos multifuncionais do discurso (por exemplo, as funções ideacional, interpessoal e textual), o que requer uma leitura contextualizada de um duplo processo de mediação: por um lado, a organização da cerimónia levada a cabo pelo Palácio de St. James e a sua subsequente estratégia para atingir um fechamento monológico e, por outro, as representações discursivas da imprensa britânica, abertas a uma polifonia de vozes e a vários enquadramentos discursivos.

Bearing in mind the relationship between discourse and society at large, this article addresses the way the British monarchy represented Charles’s second marriage and the way the media constructed their accounts in the period from 10 February (announcement) until 9 April 2005 (wedding) in relation to wider issues such as power relations, newspaper economic structures and popular culture. Particular attention is paid to the multifunctional features of discourse (i.e. its ideational, interpersonal and textual functions), which requires a contextualized reading of a dual process of mediation: on the one hand, the staging of the ceremony by St. James’s Palace and its strategy for attaining monologic closure and, on the other hand, discursive representations by the British press open to a polyphony of voices and discursive frames

The Middle and Upper Jurassique limestones investigated were sub-divided into nine microfacies (MF) types. The firsts four represent Bathonian sediments with shallow water characteristics typical for carbonate platforms. They are comparable with Wilson's facies zones 6 to 8. Reef and reef debris, near-shore clastic-dominated limestones are not present. These MF-types are reiterated several times without cyclicity. The vertical development of the differentiated facies units indicates a close interfingering. The microfacies data are typical of inter to shallow subtidal environments; both authigenous quartz and low faunal and floral diversity of several layers point to temporary restricted conditions. The occurrence of Dictyoconus cayeuxi LUCAS and Callovian ammonites from the above lying strata argue for a Bathonian age. The MF-types 5-9 (Oxfordian-Kimmeridgian) show completely different sedimentation conditions. Fully marine nearshore recifal limestones alternate with pelagic sediments formed at deeper shelf areas. The pelagic micritic limestones of Oxfordian age are characterized by allodapic intercalations whereas the Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian limestones with tuberolithic fabrics often show intensive silifications. Only initial patch reef growth-stages were reached during the development of the Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian shallow water limestones.

Liquid crystalline cellulosic-based solutions described by distinctive properties are at the origin of different kinds of multifunctional materials with unique characteristics. These solutions can form chiral nematic phases at rest, with tuneable photonic behavior, and exhibit a complex behavior associated with the onset of a network of director field defects under shear. Techniques, such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Rheology coupled with NMR (Rheo-NMR), rheology, optical methods, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Wide Angle X-rays Scattering (WAXS), were extensively used to enlighten the liquid crystalline characteristics of these cellulosic solutions. Cellulosic films produced by shear casting and fibers by electrospinning, from these liquid crystalline solutions, have regained wider attention due to recognition of their innovative properties associated to their biocompatibility. Electrospun membranes composed by helical and spiral shape fibers allow the achievement of large surface areas, leading to the improvement of the performance of this kind of systems. The moisture response, light modulated, wettability and the capability of orienting protein and cellulose crystals, opened a wide range of new applications to the shear casted films. Characterization by NMR, X-rays, tensile tests, AFM, and optical methods allowed detailed characterization of those soft cellulosic materials. In this work, special attention will be given to recent developments, including, among others, a moisture driven cellulosic motor and electro-optical devices.

A rock salt-lamprophyre dyke contact zone (sub-vertical, NE-SW strike) was investigated for its petrographic, mechanic and physical properties by means of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility CAMS) and rock magnetic properties, coupled with quantitative microstructural analysis and thermal mathematical modelling. The quantitative microstructural analysis of halite texture and solid inclusions revealed good spatial correlation with AMS and halite fabrics. The fabrics of both lamprophyre and rock salt record the magmatic intrusion, "plastic" flow and regional deformation (characterized by a NW-SE trending steep foliation). AMS and microstructural analysis revealed two deformation fabrics in the rock salt: (1) the deformation fabrics in rock salt on the NW side of the dyke are associated with high temperature and high fluid activity attributed to the dyke emplacement; (2) On the opposite side of the dyke, the emplacement-related fabric is reworked by localized tectonic deformation. The paleomagnetic results suggest significant rotation of the whole dyke, probably during the diapir ascent and/or the regional Tertiary to Quaternary deformation. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Dual-phase functionally graded materials are a particular type of composite materials whose properties are tailored to vary continuously, depending on its two constituent's composition distribution, and which use is increasing on the most diverse application fields. These materials are known to provide superior thermal and mechanical performances when compared to the traditional laminated composites, exactly because of this continuous properties variation characteristic, which enables among other advantages smoother stresses distribution profile. In this paper we study the influence of different homogenization schemes, namely the schemes due to Voigt, Hashin-Shtrikman and Mod-Tanaka, which can be used to obtain bounds estimates for the material properties of particulate composite structures. To achieve this goal we also use a set of finite element models based on higher order shear deformation theories and also on first order theory. From the studies carried out, on linear static analyses and on free vibration analyses, it is shown that the bounds estimates are as important as the deformation kinematics basis assumed to analyse these types of multifunctional structures. Concerning to the homogenization schemes studied, it is shown that Mori-Tanaka and Hashin-Shtrikman estimates lead to less conservative results when compared to Voigt rule of mixtures.

Esta dissertação teve como objetivo fundamental a otimização energética do sistema de refrigeração da máquina de impregnar tela ZELL e, como objetivo adicional, a avaliação da qualidade da água do circuito, justificada pela acentuada degradação dos rolos devido à corrosão provocada pela recirculação da água de arrefecimento. Inicialmente fez-se o levantamento de informações do processo produtivo para caracterizar o funcionamento do sistema de refrigeração, tendo-se selecionado duas telas de poliéster designadas neste estudo por P1 e P2 e, também, uma tela de nylon designada por N. Foram efetuados ensaios, um para cada tela, para a atual temperatura de setpoint da água à saída da torre de arrefecimento (30ºC). Realizou-se outro ensaio para a tela N mas com uma temperatura de setpoint de 37ºC, ao qual se chamou N37. Deste modo, determinou-se as potências térmicas removidas pela água de refrigeração e as potências térmicas perdidas por radiação e por convecção, tendo-se verificado que na generalidade dos rolos as referências P1 e P2 apresentam valores mais elevados. Em termos percentuais, a potência térmica removida pela água de refrigeração nos grupos tratores 1 e 3 e no conjunto de rolos de R1 a R29 corresponde a 48%, 10% e 70%, respetivamente. Com a avaliação às necessidades de arrefecimento da máquina ZELL, confirmou-se que os caudais atuais de refrigeração dos rolos garantem condições, mais que suficientes, de funcionamento dos rolamentos. Assim sendo, fez-se uma análise no sentido da diminuição do caudal total que passou de 10,25 L/s para 7,65 L/s. Considerando esta redução, determinou-se o caudal de ar húmido a ser introduzido na torre de arrefecimento. O valor determinado foi de 4,6 m3ar húmido/s, o que corresponde a uma redução de cerca de 32% em relação ao caudal atual que é de 6,8 m3ar húmido/s. Com os resultados das análises efetuadas à água do circuito de refrigeração, concluiu-se que a água de reposição e a água de recirculação possuem má qualidade para uso na generalidade dos sistemas de refrigeração, principalmente devido aos elevados valores de concentração de ferro e condutividade elétrica, responsáveis pela intensificação da corrosão no interior dos rolos.

O solo é um recurso multifuncional e vital para a humanidade, apresentando funções ecológicas, técnico-industriais, socioeconómicas e culturais, estabelecendo um vasto capital natural insubstituível. Face à sua taxa de degradação potencialmente rápida que, devido ao crescente desenvolvimento económico e incremento da população mundial, tem vindo a aumentar nas últimas décadas, o solo é, atualmente, um recurso finito e limitado. Devido a esta problemática, o presente documento visa abordar a progressiva preocupação sobre as questões geoambientais e toda a investigação que as envolvem, avaliando o modo como os contaminantes se dispersam pelo solo nas diferentes fases do mesmo (fases sólida, líquida e gasosa). A parte experimental centrou-se na análise da adsorção do benzeno, a partir da determinação das isotérmicas de adsorção. Para tal, foram previamente preparados reatores com calcário, sendo alguns deles previamente contaminados com um biocombustível, biodiesel, a uma concentração constante. Este processo foi monitorizado com base na evolução temporal da concentração na fase gasosa, através da cromatografia gasosa. De entre os objetivos, procurou-se analisar a distribuição dos contaminantes pelas fases constituintes do solo, ajustar os dados experimentais obtidos os modelos matemáticos de Langmuir, Freundlich e Polinomial, e verificar e discutir as soluções mais adequadas.

The recent technological advancements and market trends are causing an interesting phenomenon towards the convergence of High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Embedded Computing (EC) domains. On one side, new kinds of HPC applications are being required by markets needing huge amounts of information to be processed within a bounded amount of time. On the other side, EC systems are increasingly concerned with providing higher performance in real-time, challenging the performance capabilities of current architectures. The advent of next-generation many-core embedded platforms has the chance of intercepting this converging need for predictable high-performance, allowing HPC and EC applications to be executed on efficient and powerful heterogeneous architectures integrating general-purpose processors with many-core computing fabrics. To this end, it is of paramount importance to develop new techniques for exploiting the massively parallel computation capabilities of such platforms in a predictable way. P-SOCRATES will tackle this important challenge by merging leading research groups from the HPC and EC communities. The time-criticality and parallelisation challenges common to both areas will be addressed by proposing an integrated framework for executing workload-intensive applications with real-time requirements on top of next-generation commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) platforms based on many-core accelerated architectures. The project will investigate new HPC techniques that fulfil real-time requirements. The main sources of indeterminism will be identified, proposing efficient mapping and scheduling algorithms, along with the associated timing and schedulability analysis, to guarantee the real-time and performance requirements of the applications.

Este trabalho realizou-se na empresa Continental – Indústria Têxtil do Ave, S.A (CITA) em colaboração com a empresa Cofely GDF Suez – Energia e Serviços Portugal, S.A. O principal objetivo desta dissertação foi a otimização energética da máquina de impregnar telas para pneus – a máquina ZELL, tendo em conta as principais utilidades envolvidas: eletricidade e gás natural. Deste modo foi feito um levantamento prévio das condições de operação desta máquina relativamente às telas mais representativas da produção da empresa. Tendo-se verificado que as telas em poliéster representam 65% da produção total da máquina ZELL. Para este tipo de produto, foi feita uma análise dos consumos energéticos anuais para avaliar qual das utilidades referidas corresponde à maior parcela energética. Verificou-se que o consumo de gás natural representa a maior parcela da fatura energética anual da empresa correspondendo a 47%. Além disso, da energia total consumida anualmente pela ZELL, que corresponde a 1360 tep, 32% é relativo à energia elétrica e os restantes 68% ao consumo de gás natural. Por fim, procedeu-se à otimização energética estudando as alterações possíveis no sentido de reduzir os consumos energéticos da máquina, sem prejuízo da qualidade do produto final. Para isso propôs-se a instalação de permutadores de fluxo cruzado para pré-aquecer quer o ar fresco quer o ar de combustão. A implementação desta medida tem um período de retorno à volta de três anos e pode levar a uma poupança anual entre 1.359.639 kWh e 2.370.114 kWh para o ar fresco e 393.523 kWh e 639.475 kWh para o ar de combustão.

AuNPs are versatile systems used for different biomedical application including imaging, drug and gene delivery. These systems support the intracellular transport of active molecules, a step that is considered one of the crucial problems in drug delivery. Nevertheless, in order to design optimal multifunctional AuNPs for specific and efficient nanomedicine applications, the mechanism by which AuNPs interact with living cells must be fully understand. The main goal of this work consisted in the assessment of the cellular uptake mechanism of 14 nm spherical AuNPs by A549 cells, through fluorescent spectroscopy and microscopy, in combination with quantitative analysis by ICP-MS. TAMRA labeled AuNPs were characterized by UV-visible and fluorescent spectroscopy and the final hydrodynamic diameter of 22.5 ± 0.33 nm was obtained by DLS. Regarding the cellular uptake studies, the AuNPs presented a fast cellular uptake kinetics reaching a saturation point after 6 hours of incubation in A549 cells. Further investigation concerning the internalization mechanism of this AuNPs was evaluated using specific inhibitors for different endocytic pathways. Optimal inhibition was achieved using chlorpromazine, inhibitor of clathrin-mediated endocytosis, resulting in a 23.5 % inhibition of AuNPs after 1 hour of incubation. This preliminary result obtained by fluorescent spectroscopy suggests that these AuNPs were predominantly uptake by clathrin-mediated endocytosis, meaning that other endocytic pathways must be involved in the cellular uptake of this AuNPs. In what cell viability is concern, the prepared AuNPs and the endocytic inhibitors revealed no significant effect on the cell viability in A549 cell line.

Digitalisation, globalisation, and evolving customer demands are only a few of the factors that are bound to transform the business process services industry for CBS. By investigating new ways to address these imminent challenges, this thesis explores the feasibility of implementing a formal approach to ideation to complement CBS’ service innovation practice. Two workshops were therefore conducted to put theory into action by generating new service ideas in a multifunctional team. Applying both divergent and convergent ideation techniques revealed that the latter improved an idea’s novelty and creativity as opposed to the expected increase in workability and relevance. Additionally, further analysis sheds light into the potential influence of individual characteristics and group dynamics on creativity. The thesis concludes with a discussion on the organisational implications of the findings and recommendations for future research.
