A escassez de estudos empíricos dos sistemas radiculares limita a precisão das predições relativas à economia de carbono, pois eles representam até 55% da biomassa florestal. Somente as raízes finas (diâmetro <2 mm) respondem por cerca de um terço da produção primária líquida dos ecossistemas terrestres. A hipótese de que a maior disponibilidade de água e nutrientes no solo reduz a alocação de biomassa nas raízes tem sido contestada na literatura cientifica tanto em relação às raízes finas (BRF) como a toda biomassa radicular. Avaliou-se aqui a correlação (Pearson) entre BRF e variáveis edáficas até 10 cm de profundidade em seis fragmentos florestais (48 amostras.fragmento.estação-1) na Baixada Litorânea Fluminense, nas estações de seca e de chuvas. Os solos apresentaram diferentes níveis de fertilidade. A BRF média geral foi de 641 g.m-2 (florestas similares = 140?1040 g.m-2). As médias de BRF obtidas no período chuvoso ou na várzea foram significativamente mais elevadas. Foram detectadas correlações positivas e significativas de BRF com Ca + Mg, K, P e N. Os resultados não respaldam a hipótese de redução da BRF em resposta ao aumento de água e nutrientes do solo.

As estimativas atuais de biomassa florestal contêm erros não dimensionados pela escassez de dados dos sistemas radiculares. Esta lacuna se deve às custosas estratégias de amostragem de raízes, que demanda grande quantidade de labor manual enquanto a estimativa da biomassa aérea pode ser feita com apenas a medida de diâmetro do tronco (DAP) conforme apontado por Chave et al, Houghton recomenda um valor geral de 20% da parte aérea para quantificar biomassa radicular, apesar de Silver haver demonstrado que o clima, o solo e a qualidade da serapilheira devam ser levados em conta. Dentre os principais determinantes da biomassa radicular destacam-se, no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, as contrastantes condições de clima e solo, além da composição e estrutura dos diferentes fragmentos florestais que ocorrem na paisagem. De acordo com Davis & Naghettini, ocorre expressiva variação climática representada por precipitações anuais desde 750 mm no Vale do Rio Paraíba do Sul a 4000 mm na Serra da Mantiqueira. Há grande variedade de solos no estado. A título de ilustração, em dois municípios costeiros, um deles incluído no presente estudo, Lumbreras et al encontraram a dominância, nas partes elevadas, de Latossolos, Argissolos, Nitossolos, Luvissolos, Planossolos, Cambissolos e Neossolos. Já nas baixadas, relacionadas aos sedimentos recentes, ocorrem as classes: Espodossolos, Planossolos, Gleissolos, Neossolos e Organossolos. Associados a outros atributos da feição paisagística, compuseram 45 unidades de mapeamentos. Nesse ambiente distribuem-se diversos fragmentos florestais, alguns remanescentes, em geral interferidos ou de difícil acesso e vegetação secundária em sua maioria. Os fragmentos florestais fluminenses resultam, primordialmente, da conversão das florestas nativas em cafezais e pastagens nos séculos 19 e 20, do uso crônico do fogo nas pastagens (ou por vandalismo), e da extração seletiva de árvores, cujo impacto pode ser detectado na ciclagem de nutrientes, conforme demonstrado por Villela et al., que deve influenciar significativamente a biomassa radicular. Ante o exposto o presente estudo visou estimar a biomassa radicular fina de diferentes fragmentos florestais da Planície Costeira Fluminense, comparando-as entre si.

Finnish education policy, educational legislation and the entire education system changed significantly during the 1990s as part of a general restructuring of public administration. There has been a clear divergence from the former tradition of a system of regulation, founded on detailed legislation and the principle of equality. The new governance, which is based more on individual choice, efficiency and evaluation, emphasizes that the development of a high standard of education is a necessity in the light of global competition. This study explores the legislative process regarding education policy in the Finnish Parliament during the 1990s, and highlights in particular how the international discourse on education policies was restructured in the context of Finnish legislation. The research material consists of all the public parliamentary documents relating to education, including government proposals, minutes from the discussions in the chamber and archive material (final protocols, reports and statements) for the Committee for Education and Culture. The discourse on the process of drafting and passing education legislation is modelled on three interrelated policy technologies (market, management and performance), which are understood here as mechanisms connecting general political ideas to normative legislation. The changes in the regulation of education were part of a general public administration reform instigated during the mid 1980s. The research results will prove that during the left-right coalition cabinet of PM Harri Holkeri, new policy technologies affected the parliamentary discourse on education policy. This was particularly influenced by a change in the preconditions for the management of education that was created as a result of the numerous demands to deregulate and delegate decision-making authority to the local and school levels while rendering the whole education system more effective. At the turn of the decade, market-type mechanisms were more indirectly manifested in the forms of individuality and freedom of choice, which were reflected, for example, in proposals to “lower the hurdles” by separating general from vocational secondary education with a view to encouraging students to select courses from other educational establishments, in addition to relaxing the requirements for establishing private schools and abolishing a hundred-year-old strict national catchment-area system. Later, in the course of the 1990s, after the subjects, players, and methods of evaluation had been more precisely defined, evaluation based on performance would result in the active measurement of the attainment of set objectives. In the spring of 1991, from the outset of PM Esko Aho's right-centre coalition cabinet, the education budget suffered cutbacks as a result of a global recession and this influenced the legislative work of, and discourses in, parliament. Representatives of the parties in power regarded the recession solely as an external factor that was remote from the political arena. In their view, the education system should rise to the challenge by ensuring the efficient and innovative use of the resources available and by developing new forms of indicators for evaluating results. Representatives of the opposition opposed the cabinet’s standpoint as a result of the recession, criticized the measures taken by pointing out the harmful effect of constantly cutting the budget and argued that the government had made political capital out of the recession by using it as an opportunity to give more room to market, management and performance technologies within the Finnish education system. Criticism of the new education policy became even stronger during PM Paavo Lipponen's first “rainbow” coalition cabinet with critical views being expressed not only from the opposition but also from representatives within the government. Representatives from the left demanded legislative restrictions and the instigation of measures to relieve the presumed negative effects of market, management and performance in the name of educational equality. The new management by results steering method within the university sector and the introduction of commercial education services in compulsory education were fiercely criticized. The argument over “setting outer limits” including, for example, the demands for more detailed legislation and earmarked state subsidies was characteristic of Parliament’s legislative discourse in the latter part of the 1990s. From the field to the academic sphere how teachers professional identities and roles have changed in post-war Finland This study explores teacher autobiographies. The span of the writings extends mainly from the Second World War to the new millennium. The autobiographers are mostly elementary and secondary school teachers in Finland, although there are a few who have worked in vocational schools, polytechnic institutes or one of the various adult education centres. The researcher is aware of the diversity among those educational institutions and their teachers, but wanted to concentrate on similarities rather than differences. The autobiographers have been explored with four different research questions in view. The first was to identify professional and personal elements and themes mentioned by teachers in writing about themselves. The second was to identify the factors that have affected those elements and themes. The third was to examine the kinds of literary forms teachers used in their autobiographies. The fourth was the most crucial and an endeavour to connect the previous questions: how teachers professional identities and roles have changed during the period studied. In the first five chapters the teachers voices come through clearly. Two of these chapters are organized in chronological order. The first is about childhood, youth and the time spent in school, the second deals with the years studying in university or teachers college and finally being recruited to the teachers. In these chapters the rural background of many teachers stands out, an issue that also emerged symbolically or de facto in the autobiographies. The chronological scheme changes to a thematic order, in which social matters (students, parents, colleagues) and teachers working circumstances are dealt with. Four selected autobiographies are examined closely. In these autobiographies five different types of teacher narratives can be identified. To begin with, teachers stressed their vocation, which is quite a normal work orientation for those working in the educational field. Others emphasised how they were looking for professional development; a few wrote about personal advancement as well. There are also narratives by teachers who simply drifted into the profession of teaching, while a few teachers felt unwelcome in their own schools. As for the changes that teachers have witnessed, there are also some themes that are widely shared. Most pointed out how the teacher has become more foster parent than educator, as real parents have withdrawn from their responsibilities of raising children. This theme was frequently broached, although attitude towards it and ways of handling the phenomenon differed substantially. Teachers also stressed how their profession has lost the aura and prestige it once had. At the same time teachers are being expected to collaborate more with their colleagues, which is not in line with the centuries-old tradition of working alone. Teachers seem to be in a state of flux, buffeted by elements of stability and change interacting simultaneously. Many teachers are demanding a re-examination of their working reality. This case study discusses in detail for the first time the diagnosis and management of a case of leishmaniosis in a dog imported to Australia. The dog presented with epistaxis and a non-regenerative anaemia five years after being imported from Europe. Protozoa were identified within macrophages in bone marrow and splenic cytology. A Leishmania indirect fluorescent antibody test was performed and was positive while an Ehrlichia canis antibody test was negative. Polymerase chain reaction of the ITS-1 and ITS-2 regions of skin, lymph node, spleen and bone marrow were all positive for Leishmania infantum. The dog was treated with amphotericin B with a strong clinical response. The importance of thorough diagnostics in non-endemic areas, particularly Australia, is discussed. Treatment with amphotericin B is discussed. Vigilance, disease reporting and response frameworks are recommended for non-endemic areas. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

To determine rates of carriage of fluoroquinolone-resistant Escherichia coli and extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) among dogs in a specialist referral hospital and to examine the population structure of the isolates. Fluoroquinolone-resistant faecal E. coli isolates (n232, from 23 of 123 dogs) recovered from hospitalized dogs in a veterinary referral centre in Sydney, Australia, over 140 days in 2009 were characterized by phylogenetic grouping, virulence genotyping and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. The RAPD dendrogram for representative isolates showed one group B2-associated cluster and three group D-associated clusters; each contained isolates with closely related ExPEC-associated virulence profiles. All group B2 faecal isolates represented the O25b-ST131 clonal group and were closely related to recent canine extraintestinal ST131 clinical isolates from the east coast of Australia by RAPD analysis. Hospitalized dogs may carry fluoroquinolone-resistant ExPEC in their faeces, including those representing O25b-ST131.

Indospicine toxicosis was reported in sheep, goats and cattle fed on Indigofera, a leguminous plant rich in indospicine. Recent death report on dogs as a result of dietary ingestion of indospicine contaminated camel meat has raised concern about the distribution of this toxin in camels fed on Indigofera. This in vitro study aimed at measuring the degradability of indospicine in Indigofera spicata by camel-foregut fluid and attempted at explaining indospicine accumulation in meat tissue. In the first experiment, in vitro dry matter digestibility and indospicine disappearance were evaluated by using foregut fluid from 15 feral camels. Foregut fluid was collected post mortem from a nearby abattoir. In the second experiment, a composite foregut fluid obtained from three feral camels was used to examine the time-dependent degradation of indospicine. Results indicated that 99 of the dietary indospicine was degraded after 48 h of incubation. The time-dependent degradation study showed rapid degradation (11 µg/h) during the first 18 h of incubation, followed by a much slower rate (2 µg/h) between 18-48 h. Results demonstrated the ability of the camel microbiota to degrade indospicine and suggest the presence of a by-pass mechanism that enables the toxin to escape degradation and reaches the intestine.

Anti-Semitism existed in Finland during the whole period covered by this study. The immoral acts associated with Jews in the articles were mostly regarded as universal habits, qualities and/or modes of action, that is, unconnected with any particular Finnish Jew. Researchers have tried to explain anti-Semitism in several ways. The theory of Jews as outsiders has been a popular explanation as well as xenophobia, chimerical anti-Semitism and the socio-economic models. The main sources of this study have been over 400 Finnish periodicals and magazines, literature and text books published between 1918 and 1944. This vast number of magazines includes those of the army and the civil guard, religion, humour and the papers of the Finnish extreme right. One can see a distinct foreign and especially German influence in the subjects and phraseology of Finnish anti-Semitic writings between 1918 and 1944. Several known Finnish anti-Semitic writers had some kind of link with Germany. Some Finnish organisations and societies were openly anti-Semitic during this period. There had been cycles in the activity of anti-Semitic writing in Finland, obvious peaks appearing in 1918 1919, 1929 1931, 1933 1938 and 1942 1944. The reason for the 1918 1919 activity was the civil rights which were granted to the Jews in Finland, and the Russian Bolshevik revolution. The worldwide depression from 1929 to 1932 seem to be the reason for new anti-Semitic writing activity. The rise of National Socialism in Germany and the influence this phenomenon had in Finland was the reason for the peak during 1933 1938. During the continuation war 1942 1944 National Socialist Germany was fighting side-by-side with Finland and their anti-Semitic propaganda found easier access to Finland. Of the 433 magazines, journals and newspapers which were used in this study, 71 or 16.4 per cent had at least one article that can be identified as anti-Semitic; especially the magazines of national socialists and other extreme right parties were making anti-Semitic annotations. There were about 50 people known to have written anti-Semitic articles. At least half of these known writers had studied at the university, including as many as 10 priests. Over and above these, there was an even larger number of people who wrote under a pseudonym. The material used suggested that anti-Semitism was not very popular in Finland between 1918 and 1944. Anti-Semitic articles appeared mostly in the magazines of the extreme right, but their circulation was not very large. A proof of the slight influence of these extreme right anti-Semitic ideas is that, beside the tightening of policy towards Jewish immigrants in 1938 and the handing over of eight of these refugees to Germany in 1942, the official policy of Finland never became anti-Semitic. As was stated before, despite the cycles in the number of writings, there does not appear to have been any noticeable change in public opinion. One must also remember that most Finns had not at that period actually met a Jew. The material used suggests that between 1918 and 1944 the so-called Jewish question was seemingly unimportant for most Finns and their attitude to Jews and Jewishness can be described as neutral.
