When you are invited to offer a conference like this, can not stop having a series of questions and considerations about the very fact of speaking to an audience informed and educated about the issues that the title might suggest exposure and how without falling into the usual cliches, without repeating the views and opinions set forth, if not obvious. I propose, then, establish, as a starting point, two things: the first is a promise: I will not talk about internet, a recurrent theme in his classes and activities. The second is a kind of contract between you and me: check out the obviousness of some views and question it, see it from behind, because that is where we might find the seams, some of the patches, if not outright nudity. I wonder if this is not precisely one of the first tasks of teaching in the University: to force what seems obvious to justify its obviousness, which is not easy.We can start messing things up a bit, looking like a very smooth and made ​​some surrealist poets to cut one by one the words of poems and writings, throw them into the air and read with amazement the order they fall to form a new verse, Perhaps more interesting and evocative than the first. Estimados compañeros:Reciban en nombre propio y de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras un afectuoso saludo de inicio de curso lectivo. Por razones fortuitas, he solicitado a la Decana sustituta de esta Facultad, la M.L.S. Alice Miranda, Directora de vuestra Escuela, que represente a la Facultad en este acto de inicio del curso lectivo.No solamente le he pedido que transmita mis saludos, sino que los inste a hacer propósitos de mejoramiento académico durante este período que inicia. La crisis universitaria forma parte de nuestra institucionalidad. La Universidad desde su nacimiento ha vivido constantemente en crisis. No obstante, como toda crisis, éstas pueden resultar fértiles en realizaciones, si las aprovechamos para el mejoramiento. En este momento nos encontramos reflexionando sobre el carácter mismo de nuestra institucionalidad. Estamos en Congreso Universitario, realizaremos próximamente la Segunda Etapa del Segundo Congreso Universitario. Son momentos de reflexión, son momentos de lucidez, de hacer examen de conciencia, de pensar lo que hemos sido para lanzarnos al porvenir.

Uso de bandejas de alimentação na fase de engorda do camarão-da-Amazônia Macrobrachium amazonicum (HELLER, 1862)

The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the hypothesis that the M. amazonicum prawns accept feeding in trays. Six ponds were stocked with 10 juveniles II (1.2 +/- 0.7 g) per m(2) in 02/14/2003. An entirely randomized experimental design with 2 treatments (feeding in trays or feeding to the throw) and 3 replicates was used. Prawn average weight, survival, productivity, and physical and chemical variables of the water were compared between treatments using "t" test of Student. Average weight, survival and productivity were, respectively, 7.2 +/- 0.3 g, 46.8 +/- 7.8% and 335 +/- 45 kg/ha in feeding tray treatment and 6.8 +/- 0.1 g, 85.8 +/- 5.2% and 586 +/- 42 kg/ha in feed to the throw treatment. Survival and productivity differed significantly (p<0.5), while that average weight didn't differ significantly. M. amazonicum needs to use further number of trays per area, possibly due to territorial and aggressive behavior.

Rural change south of the river Bride in counties Cork and Waterford: the surveyors' evidence 1716–1851

Estate studies in Irish historical geography have been often designed to confirm or contrast local trends of development with those previously identified at the regional or sub-regional level. To date, little attention has been awarded to estate maps in studies of rural landscape change. It is a theme of this paper that the results yielded from a careful study of such estate maps can throw light on the results of the activities of the majority of estate residents. In this regard, it is fortunate that at Lismore surveys of the estate in 1716–17 and 1773–4 have survived, and a nineteenth century dimension is added by an analysis of the Valuation Office maps for 1851. This work is focused on a study of critical indicators of change, notably leasing arrangements, farm size, rate and type of enclosure, infrastructural development and settlement growth. These changes are reviewed within the framework of the dialectic that developed between landlord or landlord-inspired management policies and the forces released locally by the vast bulk of the population. Broadly this analysis indicates some of the potential rewards which may be secured by detailed scrutiny of estate maps in conjunction with other estate records.

Modelling the relationship between biomechanics and performance of young sprinting swimmers

The aim of this study was to compute a swimming performance confirmatory model based on biomechanical parameters. The sample included 100 young swimmers (overall: 12.3 ± 0.74 years; 49 boys: 12.5 ± 0.76 years; 51 girls: 12.2 ± 0.71 years; both genders in Tanner stages 1–2 by self-report) participating on a regular basis in regional and national-level events. The 100 m freestyle event was chosen as the performance indicator. Anthropometric (arm span), strength (throwing velocity), power output (power to overcome drag), kinematic (swimming velocity) and efficiency (propelling efficiency) parameters were measured and included in the model. The path-flow analysis procedure was used to design and compute the model. The anthropometric parameter (arm span) was excluded in the final model, increasing its goodness-of-fit. The final model included the throw velocity, power output, swimming velocity and propelling efficiency. All links were significant between the parameters included, but the throw velocity–power output. The final model was explained by 69% presenting a reasonable adjustment (model’s goodness-of-fit; x2/df = 3.89). This model shows that strength and power output parameters do play a mediator and meaningful role in the young swimmers’ performance.

PROPUESTA DE DESARROLLO URBANO COSTARRICENSE. ANTECEDENTES, ALTERNATIVAS Y DESAFÍOS

En  el  presente  artículo  se  desarrollan  los  aspectos principales  dentro  de  la propuesta  de  planificación  urbana  de  Costa  Rica  a  través  de  la  iniciativa  del  Plan Nacional  de  Desarrollo  Urbano  en  sus  diferentes  fases  de  trabajo.  Primeramente  se realiza  una  breve  descripción  de  los antecedentes  principales  de  las  fases  I  y  II  para luego describir lo que consistirá en la elaboración de un nuevo Plan GAM, denominado PRUGAM,  y  los  requisitos  necesarios para  su  implementación,  bajo  la  visión  del modelo  de  ciudad  generada  por  procesos  participat ivos.  Además,  se  realiza  una descripción  del  Plan  GAM  de  1982,  sus  alcances  y logros,  para  luego  realizar  una evaluación de los mismos.   Abstract:This article  shows  the main aspects  included  in  the Costarrican proposal of urban  planning  throw  the  different  phases  of  the  Nacional  Planning  of  Urban Development (PRUGAM). There is a description of the background of the project at its I and  II phases,  follow by what  is will be  the new Urban Plan call PRUGAM and  the requirements to implementation following a participative city model. Also a description of the 1982 Plan GAM, its achievements, and evaluation is done

FUERZA DE TRABAJO NICARAGÜENSE EN GUANACASTE

En este artículo, el autor, trata de exponer las condiciones en las cuales los emigrantes nicaragüenses se insertan en las actividades productivas agroindustriales en la provincia de Guanacaste, Costa Rica. El estudio está concebido como una investigación cualitativa que busca primordialmente recomponer la experiencia vivida por los emigrantes y, a partir de allí, extraer conclusiones que arrojan luz sobre la problemática de las condiciones de vida y las relaciones laborales que se establecen entre los emigrantes y las empresas contratantes. Abstract: In this article, the author tries to expose the conditions under which the Nicaraguan emigrants are inserted in agricultural activities in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.   The study is conceived as a qualitative research that looks for primarily to recompose the experience lived by the emigrants and, starting from there, to extract conclusions that throw light on the conditions of life, and the labor relationships that settle down between the emigrants and the employing companies. Waste prevention: policy instruments and business model innovation

Waste prevention (WP) is a strategy which helps societies and individuals to strive for sufficiency in resource consumption within planetary boundaries alongside sustainable and equitable well-being and to decouple the concepts of well-being and life satisfaction from materialism. Within this dissertation, some instruments to promote WP are analysed, by adopting two perspectives: firstly, the one of policymakers, at different governance levels, and secondly, the one of business in the electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) sector. At a national level, the role of WP programmes and market-based instruments (extended producer responsibility, pay-as-you-throw schemes, deposit-refund systems, environmental taxes) in boosting prevention of municipal solid waste is investigated. Then, focusing on the Emilia-Romagna Region (Italy), the performances of the waste management system are assessed over a long period, including some years before and after an institutional reform of the waste management governance regime. The impact of a centralisation (at a regional level) of both planning and economic regulation of the waste services on waste generation and WP is analysed. Finally, to support the regional decision-makers in the prioritisation of publicly funded projects for WP, a framework for the sustainability assessment, the evaluation of success, and the prioritisation of WP measures was applied to some projects implemented by Municipalities in the Region. Trying to close the research gap between engineering and business, WP strategies are discussed as drivers for business model (BM) innovation in EEE sector. Firstly, an innovative approach to a digital tracking solution for professional EEE management is analysed. New BMs which facilitate repair, reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling are created and discussed. Secondly, the impact of BMs based on servitisation and on producer ownership on the extension of equipment lifetime is analysed, by performing a review of real cases of organizations in the EEE sector applying result- and use-oriented BMs.
