We present a statistical methodology for leakage power estimation, due to subthreshold and gate tunneling leakage, in the presence of process variations, for 65 nm CMOS. The circuit leakage power variations is analyzed by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, by characterizing NAND gate library. A statistical “hybrid model” is proposed, to extend this methodology to a generic library. We demonstrate that hybrid model based statistical design results in up to 95% improvement in the prediction of worst to best corner leakage spread, with an error of less than 0.5%, with respect to worst case design.

Motivated by the need to statically balance the inherent elastic forces in linkages, this paper presents three techniques to statically balance a four-bar linkage loaded by a zero-free-length spring attached between its coupler point and an anchor point on the ground. The number of auxiliary links and balancing springs required for the three techniques is less than or equal to that of the only technique currently in the literature. One of the three techniques does not require auxiliary links. In these techniques, the set of values for the spring constants and the ground-anchor point of the balancing springs can vary over a one-parameter family. Thrice as many balancing choices are available when the cognates are considered. The ensuing numerous options enable a user to choose the most practical solution. To facilitate the evaluation of the balancing choices for all the cognates, Roberts-Chebyshev cognate theorem is extended to statically balanced four-bar linkages. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Four new neutral copper-azido polymers [Cu(4)(N(3))(8)(Me-hmpz)(2)](n) (1), [Cu(4)(N(3))(8)(men)(2)](n) (2), [Cu(5)(N(3))(10)(N,N-dmen)(2)](n) (3) and [Cu(5)(N(3))(10)(N,N'-dmen)(5)](n) (4) [Me-hmpz = 1-methylhomopiperazine; men = N-methylethylenediamine; N, N-dmen = N, N-dimethylethylenediamine and N, N'-dmen = N, N'-dimethylethylenediamine] have been synthesized by using various molar equivalents of the chelating diamine ligands with Cu(NO(3))(2)center dot 3H(2)O and an excess of NaN(3). Single-crystal X-ray structures show that the basic asymmetric units of 1 and 2 are very similar, but the overall 1D structures were found to be quite different. Complex 3 with a different composition was found to be 2D in nature, while the 1D complex 4 with 1 : 1 metal to diamine ratio presented several new structural features. Cryomagnetic susceptibility measurements over a wide range of temperature were corroborated with density functional theory calculations (B3LYP functional) performed on the complexes 1-3 to provide a qualitative theoretical interpretation of their overall magnetic behavior.

A new static 3-step distance relay based on the principle of multi-input phase comparison is described in the paper. Design principles and typical discriminating and logic circuits are described for the new relaying system. The relaying system uses semiconductor circuits throughout and features high speed and good performance. The comparator model, which effects multi-input phase comparison, has been devised to provide reliable pickup for closein faults, and to achieve an improved polar characteristic in the complex- impedance plane, which fits around only the fault area of a transmission line. Operating time of the relay is less than 1 cycle for unbalanced faults, and less than a halfcycle for 3-phase faults. Protective circuits have also been added to detect power swing and to block tripping for a predetermined number of power-swing cycles. The operating characteristics of the relay, as expressed by accuracy/range charts, are presented.

Static distance relays employing semiconductor devices as their active elements offer many advantages over the conventional electromagnetic and rectifier relays. The paper describes single-system and three-system static distance relays, which depend for their operation on the instantaneous-comparison or `block-spike¿ scheme. Design principles and typical discriminating and logic circuits are described for the new relaying equipment. The relaying circuitry has been devised for obtaining uniform performance on all kinds of faults, by the use of two phase detectors¿one for multiphase faults and one for earth faults. The phase detector for multiphase faults provides an improved polar characteristic in the complex-impedance plane, which fits only around the fault area of a transmission line. The other features of the relay are: reliable pickup for close-in faults, least susceptibility to maloperation under power-swing conditions, and reduction in cost and panel space required. The operating characteristics of the relays, as expressed by accuracy/range charts, are also presented.

A nonlinear suboptimal guidance law is presented in this paper for successful interception of ground targets by air-launched missiles and guided munitions. The main feature of this guidance law is that it accurately satisfies terminal impact angle constraints in both azimuth as well as elevation simultaneously. In addition, it is capable of hitting the target with high accuracy as well as minimizing the lateral acceleration demand. The guidance law is synthesized using recently developed model predictive static programming (MPSP). Performance of the proposed MPSP guidance is demonstrated using three-dimensional (3-D) nonlinear engagement dynamics by considering stationary, moving, and maneuvering targets. Effectiveness of the proposed guidance has also been verified by considering first. order autopilot lag as well as assuming inaccurate information about target maneuvers. Multiple munitions engagement results are presented as well. Moreover, comparison studies with respect to an augmented proportional navigation guidance (which does not impose impact angle constraints) as well as an explicit linear optimal guidance (which imposes the same impact angle constraints in 3-D) lead to the conclusion that the proposed MPSP guidance is superior to both. A large number of randomized simulation studies show that it also has a larger capture region.

The DMS-FEM, which enables functional approximations with C(1) or still higher inter-element continuity within an FEM-based meshing of the domain, has recently been proposed by Sunilkumar and Roy [39,40]. Through numerical explorations on linear elasto-static problems, the method was found to have conspicuously superior convergence characteristics as well as higher numerical stability against locking. These observations motivate the present study, which aims at extending and exploring the DMS-FEM to (geometrically) nonlinear elasto-static problems of interest in solid mechanics and assessing its numerical performance vis-a-vis the FEM. In particular, the DMS-FEM is shown to vastly outperform the FEM (presently implemented through the commercial software ANSYS (R)) as the former requires fewer linearization and load steps to achieve convergence. In addition, in the context of nearly incompressible nonlinear systems prone to volumetric locking and with no special numerical artefacts (e.g. stabilized or mixed weak forms) employed to arrest locking, the DMS-FEM is shown to approach the incompressibility limit much more closely and with significantly fewer iterations than the FEM. The numerical findings are suggestive of the important role that higher order (uniform) continuity of the approximated field variables play in overcoming volumetric locking and the great promise that the method holds for a range of other numerically ill-conditioned problems of interest in computational structural mechanics. The spectral characteristics of a diode laser are significantly affected due to interference caused between the laser diode output and the optical feedback in the external-cavity. This optical feedback effect is of practical use for linewidth reduction, tuning or for sensing applications. A sensor based on this effect is attractive due to its simplicity, low cost and compactness. This optical sensor has been used so far, in different configuration such as for sensing displacement induced by different parameters. In this paper we report a compact optical sensor consisting of a semiconductor laser coupled to an external cavity. Theoretical analysis of the self- mixing interference for optical sensing applications is given for moderate optical feedback case. A comparison is made with our experimental observations. Experimental results are in good agreement with the simulated power modulation based on self-mixing interference theory. Displacements as small as 10-4 nm have been measured using this sensor. The developed sensor showed a fringe sensitivity of one fringe per 400nm displacement for reflector distance of around 10cms. The sensor has also been tested for magnetic field and temperature induced displacement measurements.

The effect of scaling (1 μm to 0.09 μm) on the non-quasi-static (NQS) behaviour of the MOSFET has been studied using process and device simulation. It is shown that under fixed gate (Vgs) and drain (Vds) bias voltages, the NQS transition frequency (fNQS) scales as 1/Leff rather than 1/L2eff due to the velocity saturation effect. However, under the practical scaling guidelines, considering the scaling of supply voltage as well, fNQS shows a turn around effect at the sub 100 nm regime. The relation between unity gain frequency (ft) and fNQS is also evaluated and it is shown that ft and fNQS have similar trends with scaling.
