Google Docs (GD) is an online word processor with which multiple authors can work on the same document, in a synchronous or asynchronous manner, which can help develop the ability of writing in English (WEISSHEIMER; SOARES, 2012). As they write collaboratively, learners find more opportunities to notice the gaps in their written production, since they are exposed to more input from the fellow co-authors (WEISSHEIMER; BERGSLEITHNER; LEANDRO, 2012) and prioritize the process of text (re)construction instead of the concern with the final product, i.e., the final version of the text (LEANDRO; WEISSHEIMER; COOPER, 2013). Moreover, when it comes to second language (L2) learning, producing language enables the consolidation of existing knowledge as well as the internalization of new knowledge (SWAIN, 1985; 1993). Taking this into consideration, this mixed-method (DÖRNYEI, 2007) quasi-experimental (NUNAN, 1999) study aims at investigating the impact of collaborative writing through GD on the development of the writing skill in English and on the noticing of syntactic structures (SCHMIDT, 1990). Thirtyfour university students of English integrated the cohort of the study: twenty-five were assigned to the experimental group and nine were assigned to the control group. All learners went through a pre-test and a post-test so that we could measure their noticing of syntactic structures. Learners in the experimental group were exposed to a blended learning experience, in which they took reading and writing classes at the university and collaboratively wrote three pieces of flash fiction (a complete story told in a hundred words), outside the classroom, online through GD, during eleven weeks. Learners in the control group took reading and writing classes at the university but did not practice collaborative writing. The first and last stories produced by the learners in the experimental group were analysed in terms of grammatical accuracy, operationalized as the number of grammar errors per hundred words (SOUSA, 2014), and lexical density, which refers to the relationship between the number of words produced with lexical properties and the number of words produced with grammatical properties (WEISSHEIMER, 2007; MEHNERT, 1998). Additionally, learners in the experimental group answered an online questionnaire on the blended learning experience they were exposed to. The quantitative results showed that the collaborative task led to the production of more lexically dense texts over the 11 weeks. The noticing and grammatical accuracy results were different from what we expected; however, they provide us with insights on measurement issues, in the case of noticing, and on the participants‟ positive attitude towards collaborative writing with flash fiction. The qualitative results also shed light on the usefulness of computer-mediated collaborative writing in L2 learning.

Existe una cantidad enorme de información en Internet acerca de incontables temas, y cada día esta información se expande más y más. En teoría, los programas informáticos podrían beneficiarse de esta gran cantidad de información disponible para establecer nuevas conexiones entre conceptos, pero esta información a menudo aparece en formatos no estructurados como texto en lenguaje natural. Por esta razón, es muy importante conseguir obtener automáticamente información de fuentes de diferentes tipos, procesarla, filtrarla y enriquecerla, para lograr maximizar el conocimiento que podemos obtener de Internet. Este proyecto consta de dos partes diferentes. En la primera se explora el filtrado de información. La entrada del sistema consiste en una serie de tripletas proporcionadas por la Universidad de Coimbra (ellos obtuvieron las tripletas mediante un proceso de extracción de información a partir de texto en lenguaje natural). Sin embargo, debido a la complejidad de la tarea de extracción, algunas de las tripletas son de dudosa calidad y necesitan pasar por un proceso de filtrado. Dadas estas tripletas acerca de un tema concreto, la entrada será estudiada para averiguar qué información es relevante al tema y qué información debe ser descartada. Para ello, la entrada será comparada con una fuente de conocimiento online. En la segunda parte de este proyecto, se explora el enriquecimiento de información. Se emplean diferentes fuentes de texto online escritas en lenguaje natural (en inglés) y se extrae información de ellas que pueda ser relevante al tema especificado. Algunas de estas fuentes de conocimiento están escritas en inglés común, y otras están escritas en inglés simple, un subconjunto controlado del lenguaje que consta de vocabulario reducido y estructuras sintácticas más simples. Se estudia cómo esto afecta a la calidad de las tripletas extraídas, y si la información obtenida de fuentes escritas en inglés simple es de una calidad superior a aquella extraída de fuentes en inglés común.

Based on close examinations of instant message (IM) interactions, this chapter argues that an interactional sociolinguistic approach to computer-mediated language use could provide explanations for phenomena that previously could not be accounted for in computer-mediated discourse analysis (CMDA). Drawing on the theoretical framework of relational work (Locher, 2006), the analysis focuses on non-task oriented talk and its function in forming and establishing communication norms in the team, as well as micro-level phenomena, such as hesitation, backchannel signals and emoticons. The conclusions of this preliminary research suggest that the linguistic strategies used for substituting audio-visual signals are strategically used in discursive functions and have an important role in relational work

La cuestión del género fue trabajada dentro de los estudios de traducción de diversas formas, incluyendo la asignación de género en la lengua meta, la traducción de lenguaje marcado de género y la traducción feminista. En este trabajo se estudia el uso o ausencia de marcas de género y de la praeterio a la hora de afrontar una traducción al gallego de la autora irlandesa Eiléan Ní Chuillanáin, feminista y nacionalista. Ambas situaciones se reflejan conscientemente en sus poemas de manera significativa. A través de ejemplos prácticos seleccionados, se reflexiona sobre la necesidad de tener en cuenta que la traslación de sus textos a una lengua que obligatoriamente establece elecciones lingüísticas entre el femenino y el masculino, debe hacerse respetando el sentido de la autora. Esto supone, para quien traduzca, compartir la perspectiva feminista y nacional de la autora familiarizándose con el marco y condicionantes de su obra poética.

El objetivo de este trabajo consiste en comparar las funciones pragmáticas de una estructura intensificadora en español peninsular formada con la partícula venga (venga a + infinitivo) con estructuras intensificadoras en inglés. Para ello, analizamos los factores sintácticos, semánticos y pragmáticos que el traductor tiene en cuenta a la hora de usar esta estructura en la traducción al español. El corpus lo componen fragmentos de obras literarias extraídas en Google Books. Los resultados demuestran que con esta construcción se consigue transferir al español no sólo efectos semánticos (iteración), sino también pragmáticos, como la evaluación del hablante (desacuerdo, sorpresa, etc.).

Al parecer, el primer libro traducido del español al inglés fue La Celestina, ca. 1525. Sin embargo, con anterioridad a esa fecha, hay constancia de que a finales del siglo XV se llevaron también a cabo traducciones de condición documental. De dos de ellas se da cuenta en este artículo: la traducción de una carta (previamente traducida del árabe al español) y la traducción de un documento comercial fechado el 29 de mayo de 1490.

Situational awareness is achieved naturally by the human senses of sight and hearing in combination. Automatic scene understanding aims at replicating this human ability using microphones and cameras in cooperation. In this paper, audio and video signals are fused and integrated at different levels of semantic abstractions. We detect and track a speaker who is relatively unconstrained, i.e., free to move indoors within an area larger than the comparable reported work, which is usually limited to round table meetings. The system is relatively simple: consisting of just 4 microphone pairs and a single camera. Results show that the overall multimodal tracker is more reliable than single modality systems, tolerating large occlusions and cross-talk. System evaluation is performed on both single and multi-modality tracking. The performance improvement given by the audio–video integration and fusion is quantified in terms of tracking precision and accuracy as well as speaker diarisation error rate and precision–recall (recognition). Improvements vs. the closest works are evaluated: 56% sound source localisation computational cost over an audio only system, 8% speaker diarisation error rate over an audio only speaker recognition unit and 36% on the precision–recall metric over an audio–video dominant speaker recognition method.

‘Scratch’ investigates the use of physical space as a representation of narrative and dramatic structure. An audio-drama, it is a world-first in being location-sensitive without being tied to any particular place (preceding attempts by others have emphasised location-specific aspects of the genre). Developed in collaboration with and part-funded by BBC Radio Drama, it builds on research undertaken for ‘Dragons’ (output 4). It uses pre-recorded audio on GPS-enabled mobile devices allowing sounds to be virtually attached to locations in an outdoor space. As participants move, they encounter scenes forming a coherent drama which behave differently if the same place is visited more than once. This translocational approach opens novel artistic possibilities exploited through team expertise in narrative, sound design and advanced interaction. It is also significant in the economics of broadcast media as a more viable proposition than the many experimental locative experiences which have been site-specific: this was of great interest to the BBC. The public performance selected for BBC FreeThinking, 1-2 September 2008 in Liverpool as part of European Capital of Culture was reported in a co-authored 2009 conference presentation at ISEA, Belfast, 26-29 August 2009 and in a co-authored short chapter in Spierling and Szilas (eds.) Interactive Storytelling, Springer 2008. Boyd Davis directed the project and devised and undertook the evaluation with 40 trial listeners, reporting to BBC executives (http://researchonline.rca.ac.uk/1000/) for whom a second trial was also run in London in 2009. The evaluation used interview, video observation and a questionnaire combining an open question at the beginning with more specific questions later, avoiding channelling respondents' reactions immediately after the experience into issues which might not be uppermost in their minds, while also yielding data capable of rigorous analysis. The evaluation was to provide feedback to the makers of the drama and to guide policy at the BBC. [287] Participants were recruited principally through the publicity for FreeThinking 2008 – mainly via the festival website. The average age of participants was 40. The gender of participants was 20 males, 17 females and 3 null returns. The evaluation strategy was to combine an open question at the beginning with more specific questions later. In this way we avoided channeling respondents' initial opinions immediately after the experience into issues which might not be uppermost in their minds, while also yielding data capable of rigorous analysis. The purpose of the evaluation was to provide guidance for ourselves as the makers of the drama and to guide policy at the BBC on locative and other interactive media. The responses are analysed in the report.

Therapistsʼ process notes - written descriptions of a session produced shortly afterwards from memory - hold a significant role in child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapy. They are central in training, in supervision, and in developing oneʼs understanding through selfsupervision and forms of psychotherapy research. This thesis examines such process notes through a comparison with audio recordings of the same sessions. In so doing, it aims to generate theory that might illuminate the causes of significantly patterned discrepancies between the notes and recordings, in order to understand more about the processes at work in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and to explore the nature of process notes, their values and limitations. The literature searches conducted revealed limited relevant studies. All identified studies that compare process notes with recordings of sessions seek to quantify the differences between the two forms of recording. Unlike these, this thesis explores the meaning of the differences between process notes and recordings through qualitative data analysis. Using psychoanalytically informed grounded theory, in total nine sets of process notes and recordings from three different psychoanalytic psychotherapists are analysed. The analysis identifies eight core categories of findings. Initial theories are developed from these categories, most significantly concerning the role and influence of a ʻcore transference dynamicʼ between therapist and patient. Further theory is developed on the nature and function of process notes as a means for the therapistʼs conscious and unconscious processing of the session, as well as on the nature of the influence of the relationships – both internal and external – within which they are written. In the light of the findings, a proposal is made for a new approach for learning about the patient and clinical work, ʻthe comparison methodʼ (supervision involving a comparison of process notes and recordings), and, in particular, for its inclusion within the training of psychoanalytic psychotherapists. Further recommendations for research are also made.

En este trabajo, verificamos si el tiempo de inicio de voz (en inglés, Voice Onset Time - VOT) corresponde a la principal pista acústica utilizada en la identificación y discriminación de sonoridad de los segmentos oclusivos del inglés. Investigamos un grupo de 15 estudiantes de inglés, hablantes de español rioplatense como L1, los cuales realizaron un test de identificación y otro de discriminación (AxB) en que se testearon cuatro patrones de VOT del inglés: (i) VOT Negativo y VOT Cero, que ocurren variablemente en las producciones de oclusivas sonoras; (ii) VOT Positivo, producido en oclusivas sordas y (iii) VOT Cero Artificial, un patrón manipulado y construido a partir del corte de aspiración de /p/, /t/, /k/. Los resultados confirman que el VOT no corresponde a la pista mayoritariamente seguida por los estudiantes, y que las distinciones de sonidos en la interlengua no son establecidas a partir de las mismas pistas acústicas que son funcionalmente primordiales entre hablantes nativos del inglés

Bei der Vermittlung geographischer Kompetenzen im Sachunterricht der Grundschule stellen Karten und andere visuelle Medien wichtige Lernmedien dar (vgl. Haubrich 2006, 174ff.). Der vorliegende Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der Einbindung von audiovisuellen Medien in die Onlineplattform kidipedia. Dabei wird zunächst ein Überblick über aktuelle Möglichkeiten der Einbindung multimedialer Inhalte gegeben, bevor Erweiterungsmöglichkeiten mit dem Fokus auf geographische Inhalte skizziert werden. El Programa de Formación Docente (PROFORDEMS) y las opciones propuestas para la realización del proyecto, con el fin de obtener la Certificación de Competencias Docentes para la Educación Media Superior (CERTIDEMS), son el fundamento de esta propuesta de una estrategia didáctica para la asignatura de Inglés en todos sus niveles, desde el primero hasta el cuarto semestre en Educación Media Superior. En este trabajo se justifica la certificación, con base en las Competencias Docentes según el Marco Curricular Común, que está enfocada a una mejor calidad de aprendizaje de una segunda lengua extranjera; sobre todo, a su aplicación en el ámbito laboral y/o personal. Este enfoque tendrá beneficio en el estudiante, pues así tendrá mejores oportunidades en un mercado laboral más competitivo.
