Almost half of the 4822 described beeflies in the world belong to the subfamily Anthracinae, with most of the diversity found in three cosmopolitan tribes: Villini, Anthracini, and Exoprosopini. The Australian Exoprosopini previously contained three genera, Ligyra Newman, Pseudopenthes Roberts and Exoprosopa Macquart. Pseudopenthes is an Australian endemic, with two species including Ps. hesperis, sp. nov. from Western Australia. Two new species of the exoprosopine Atrichochira Hesse, Atr. commoni, sp. nov. and Atr. paramonovi, sp. nov., are also described from Australia, extending the generic distribution from Africa. Cladistic analysis clarified the phylogenetic relationships between the recognised groups of the Exoprosopini and determined generic limits on a world scale. Inclusion of 18 Australian exoprosopines placed the Australian species in the context of the world fauna. The Exoprosopini contains six large groups. The basal group I contains species previously included in Exoprosopa to which the name Defilippia Lioy is applied. Group II contains Heteralonia Rondani, Atrichochira, Micomitra Bowden, Pseudopenthes, and Diatropomma Bowden. Colossoptera Hull is newly synonymised with Heteralonia. Group III is a paraphyletic assemblage of Pterobates Bezzi and Exoprosopa including the Australian Ex. sylvana ( Fabricius). Ligyra is paraphyletic, forming two well-separated clades. The African clade is described as Euligyra Lambkin, gen. nov., which, together with Litorhina Bezzi and Hyperalonia Rondani, form group IV. The Australian group V is true Ligyra. The remaining monophyletic lineage of exoprosopines, group VI, the Balaana-group of genera, shows evidence of an evolutionary radiation of beeflies in semi-arid Australia. Phylogenetic analysis of all 42 species of the Balaana-group of genera formed a basis for delimiting genera. Seven new genera are described by Lambkin & Yeates: Balaana, Kapua, Larrpana, Munjua, Muwarna, Palirika and Wurda. Four non-Australian species belong to Balaana. Thirty two new Australian species are described: Bal. abscondita, Bal. bicuspis, Bal. centrosa, Bal. gigantea, Bal. kingcascadensis, K. corusca, K. irwini, K. westralica, Lar. collessi, Lar. zwicki, Mun. erugata, Mun. lepidokingi, Mun. paralutea, Mun. trigona, Muw. vitreilinearis, Pa. anaxios, Pa. basilikos, Pa. blackdownensis, Pa. bouchardi, Pa. cyanea, Pa. danielsi, Pa. decora, Pa. viridula, Pa. whyalla, W. emu, W. impatientis, W. montebelloensis, W. norrisi, W. patrellia, W. skevingtoni, W. windorah, and W. wyperfeldensis. Stable expression of human groups IIA and X secreted phospholipases A(2) (hGIIA and hGX) in CHO-K1 and HEK293 cells leads to serum- and interleukin-1beta-promoted arachidonate release. Using mutant CHO-K1 cell lines, it is shown that this arachidonate release does not require heparan sulfate proteoglycan- or glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored proteins. It is shown that the potent secreted phospholipase A(2) inhibitor Me-Indoxam is cell-impermeable. By use of Me-Indoxam and the cell-impermeable, secreted phospholipase A(2) trapping agent heparin, it is shown that hGIIA liberates free arachidonate prior to secretion from the cell. With hGX-transfected CHO-K1 cells, arachidonate release occurs before and after enzyme secretion, whereas all of the arachidonate release from HEK293 cells occurs prior to enzyme secretion. Immunocytochemical studies by confocal laser and electron microscopies show localization of hGIIA to the cell surface and Golgi compartment. Additional results show that the interleukin-1beta-dependent release of arachidonate is promoted by secreted phospholipase A(2) expression and is completely dependent on cytosolic (group IVA) phospholipase A(2). These results along with additional data resolve the paradox that efficient arachidonic acid release occurs with hGIIA-transfected cells, and yet exogenously added hGIIA is poorly able to liberate arachidonic acid from mammalian cells.

Serial reduction in scar thickness has been shown in animal models. We sought whether this reduction in scar thickness may be a result of dilatation of the left ventricle (LV) with stretching and thinning of the wall. Contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) was performed to delineate radial scar thickness in 25 patients (age 63±10, 21 men) after myocardial infarction. The LV was divided into 16 segts and the absolute radial scar thickness (ST) and percentage scar to total wall thickness (%ST) were measured. Regional end diastolic (EDV) and end systolic volumes (ESV) of corresponding segments were measured on CMRI. All patients underwent revascularization and serial changes in ST, %ST, and regional volumes were assessed with a mean follow up of 15±5 months. CMRI identified a total of 93 scar segments. An increase in EDV or ESV was associated with a serial reduction inST(versusEDV, r =−0.3, p = 0.01; versusESV, r =−0.3, p = 0.005) and%ST(versusEDV, r =−0.2, p = 0.04; versus ESV, r =−0.3, p = 0.001). For segts associated with a positive increase in EDV (group I) or ESV (group II) there was a significant decrease in ST and %ST, but in those segts with stable EDV (group III) or ESV (group IV) there were no significant changes in ST and %ST (Table).

Neste estudo o objetivo foi determinar a variável dos valores cefalométricos angulares entre linhas intracranianas com relação à linha de referência M, por meio de telerradiografias em norma lateral realizadas com o PF paralelo ao solo, em indivíduos com má oclusão de Classe I, Classe II (divisão 1 e 2) e Classe III de Angle, e estimar os valores obtidos em telerradiografia lateral com a cabeça na posição natural (PNC). A amostra consistiu de 240 telerradiografias em norma lateral direita, sendo 120 de indivíduos do sexo masculino e 120 do feminino, classificadas em três faixas etárias: 12 à 15 anos; 15 anos e um mês à 17 anos e 11 meses; 18 anos à 21 anos e 11 meses; e um grupo controle com 61 telerradiografias em norma lateral direita em PNC sendo 24 indivíduos do sexo masculino e 37 do sexo feminino, na faixa etária entre 12 anos e 5 meses à 21 anos e 5 meses e portadores de oclusão normal natural. Em todas as telerradiografias foram traçadas as linhas intracranianas Sela-Násio (SN), Básio-Násio (BaN), Pório-Orbitário (PoOr) e Linha M, para que estes ângulos tivessem os seus valores estimados em PNC. As variáveis idade e sexo foram correlacionadas com os ângulos, reais e estimados, nos grupos experimentais. Após a análise estatística dos resultados pode-se concluir que: 1) Os valores cefalométricos angulares médios, reais e estimados obtidos nos quatro grupos experimentais foram: Grupo I Reais: M.SN =102,58°; M.BaN = 121,39°; M.PoOr = 94,08°. Estimados: HV.SN = 8,24° (sexo feminino) e 3,44° (sexo masculino); HV.BaN = 24,65°; HV.PoOr = -2,47°. Grupo II Reais: M.SN = 102,59°; M.BaN = 121,29°; M.PoOr = 93,13°. Estimados: HV.SN = 5,86°; HV.BaN = 24,55°; HV.PoOr = -3,43°. Grupo III Reais: M.SN = 104,38°; M.BaN = 122,25°; M.PoOr = 95,99°. Estimados: HV.SN = 7,65°; HV.BaN = 25,51°; HV.PoOr = -0,56°. Grupo IV Reais: M.SN = 104,63°; M.BaN = 123,63°; M.PoOr = 94,80°. Estimados: HV.SN = 10,14° (sexo feminino) e 5,66° (sexo masculino); HV.BaN = 26,88°; HV.PoOr = - 1,75°. 2) Não houve relação estatisticamente significante entre os valores angulares cefalométricos com relação à faixa etária; 3) Em relação ao sexo, somente o ângulo HV.SN apresentou diferenças estatisticamente significantes, nos Grupos I e IV, sendo para o Grupo I: 8,24° para o sexo feminino e 3,44° para o masculino; e Grupo IV: 10,14° para o sexo feminino e 5,66° para o masculino).

The objective of this thesis is to report the behaviour of mammalian cells with biocompatible synthetic polymers with potential for applications to the human body. Composite hydrogel materials were tested as possible keratoprosthetic devices. It was found that surface topography is an important consideration, pores, channels and fibres exposed on the surface of the hydrogels tested can have significant effects on the extent of cell adheson and proliferation. It is recommended that the core component is fabricated out of one of the following to provide a non cell adhesive base; A8, A11, A13, A22, A23. The haptic periphery fabricated out of one of the following would provide a cell adhesive composite; A16, A30, A33, A37, A38, A42, A43, A44. The presence of vitronectin in the ocular tissue appears to lead to higher cell adhesion to the posterior surface of a contact lens when compared to the anterior surface. Group IV contact lenses adhere more cells than Group II contact lenses - this may indicate that more protein (including vitronectin) is able to adhere to the contact lens due to the Group IV contact lenses high water content and ionic hydrogel matrix. Artificial lung surfactant analogues were found to be non cytotoxic but also decreased cell proliferation when tested at higher concentrations. Poly(lysine ethyl ester adipamide) [PLETESA] had the most favourable response on cell proliferation and commercial styrene/maleic anhydride (pMA/STY sp2) the most pronounced inhibitory response. The mode of action that decreases cell proliferation appears to be through membrane destabilization. Tissue culture well plates coated with PLETESA allowed cells to adhere in a concentration dependent manner, multilaminar liposomes possibly of PLETESA were observed in solution in PLETESA coated wells. Polyhydroxybutryate (PHB) and polyhydroxyvalerate (PHV) blends that contained hydroxyapatite were found to be the most cell adhesive material of those materials tested. The blends that were most susceptible to degradation adhered the most cells in initial stages of degradation. The initial slight increase in cell adhesion may be due to the increased rugosity of the material. As the degradation continued the number of cells adhering to the samples decreased, this may indicate that the polarity was inhibitory to cell adhesion during the later stages of degradation.

This paper focuses on the effects of wear regime on the deposition pattern of important immunoregulatory proteins on FDA Group IV etafilcon-A lenses. Specifically, the aim was to assess the extent to which the daily disposable wear modality produces a different deposition of proteins from the conventional daily wear regime which is coupled with cleaning and disinfection. Counter immunoelectrophoresis (CIE) was employed to detect individual proteins in lens extracts from individual patients and focused on the analysis of five proteins, IgA, IgG, lactoferrin, albumin and kininogen. Deposition was monitored as a function of time; significantly lower deposition was detected on the daily disposable lenses. cr 2002 British Contact Lens Association. The kinin family are a group of bioactive peptides that are closely involved in the modulation of vascular inflammation and local injury. We have demonstrated here, for the first time, a link between kinin activity and contact lens wear. Protein extracts from daily and extended wear etafilcon A, Group IV, Acuvue lenses (Vistakon), were analysed by counter immunoelectrophoresis. In this way, kinin activity associated with contact lens wear was detected. High molecular weight kininogen was used as the marker protein. The polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is considered the most common endocrine disorder in reproductive age women, with a prevalence ranging from 15 to 20%. In addition to hormonal and reproductive changes, it is common in PCOS the presence of risk factors for developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance (IR), visceral obesity, chronic low-grade inflammation and dyslipidemia. Due to the high frequency of obesity associated with PCOS, weight loss is considered as the first-line treatment for the syndrome by improving metabolic and normalizes serum androgens, restoring reproductive function of these patients. Objectives: To evaluate the inflammatory markers and IR in women with PCOS and healthy ovulatory with different nutritional status and how these parameters are displayed after weight loss through caloric restriction in with Down syndrome. Methods: Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were assessed in serum samples from 40 women of childbearing age. The volunteers were divided into four groups: Group I (not eutrophic with PCOS, n = 12); Group II (not eutrophic without PCOS, n = 10), Group III (eutrophic with PCOS, n = 08) and Group IV (eutrophic without PCOS, n = 10). The categorization of groups was performed by body mass index (BMI), according to the World Health Organization (WHO) does not eutrophic, overweight and obesity (BMI> 25 kg / m²) and normal weight (BMI <24.9 kg / m²). IR was determined by HOMA-IR index. In the second phase of the study a controlled dietary intervention was performed and inflammatory parameters were evaluated in 21 overweight and obese women with PCOS, before and after weight loss. All patients received a low-calorie diet with reduction of 500 kcal / day of regular consumption with standard concentrations of macronutrients. Results: Phase 1: PCOS patients showed increased levels of CRP (p <0.01) and HOMAIR (p <0.01). When divided by BMI, both not eutrophic group with PCOS (I) as eutrophic with PCOS (III) showed increased levels of CRP (I = 2.35 ± 0,55mg / L and 2.63 ± III = 0,65mg / L; p <0.01) and HOMA-IR (I = 2.16 ± 2.54 and III = 1.07 ± 0.55; p <0.01). There were no differences in TNF-α and IL-6 between groups. Step 2: After the weight loss of 5% of the initial weight was reduced in all of the components of serum assessed inflammatory profile, PCR (154.75 ± 19:33) vs (78.06 ± 8.9) TNF α (10.89 ± 5.09) vs (6:39 ± 1:41) and IL6 (154.75 ± 19:33) vs (78.06 ± 08.09) (p <0:00) in association with improvement some hormonal parameters evaluated. Conclusion: PCOS contributed to the development of chronic inflammation and changes in glucose metabolism by increasing CRP, insulin and HOMA-IR, independent of nutritional status. The weight loss, caloric restriction has improved the inflammatory condition and hormonal status of the evaluated patients.

Germanium (Ge) nanowires are of current research interest for high speed nanoelectronic devices due to the lower band gap and high carrier mobility compatible with high K-dielectrics and larger excitonic Bohr radius ensuing a more pronounced quantum confinement effect [1-6]. A general way for the growth of Ge nanowires is to use liquid or a solid growth promoters in a bottom-up approach which allow control of the aspect ratio, diameter, and structure of 1D crystals via external parameters, such as precursor feedstock, temperature, operating pressure, precursor flow rate etc [3, 7-11]. The Solid-phase seeding is preferred for more control processing of the nanomaterials and potential suppression of the unintentional incorporation of high dopant concentrations in semiconductor nanowires and unrequired compositional tailing of the seed-nanowire interface [2, 5, 9, 12]. There are therefore distinct features of the solid phase seeding mechanism that potentially offer opportunities for the controlled processing of nanomaterials with new physical properties. A superior control over the growth kinetics of nanowires could be achieved by controlling the inherent growth constraints instead of external parameters which always account for instrumental inaccuracy. The high dopant concentrations in semiconductor nanowires can result from unintentional incorporation of atoms from the metal seed material, as described for the Al catalyzed VLS growth of Si nanowires [13] which can in turn be depressed by solid-phase seeding. In addition, the creation of very sharp interfaces between group IV semiconductor segments has been achieved by solid seeds [14], whereas the traditionally used liquid Au particles often leads to compositional tailing of the interface [15] . Korgel et al. also described the superior size retention of metal seeds in a SFSS nanowire growth process, when compared to a SFLS process using Au colloids [12]. Here in this work we have used silver and alloy seed particle with different compositions to manipulate the growth of nanowires in sub-eutectic regime. The solid seeding approach also gives an opportunity to influence the crystallinity of the nanowires independent of the substrate. Taking advantage of the readily formation of stacking faults in metal nanoparticles, lamellar twins in nanowires could be formed.

The interactions between electrons and lattice vibrations are fundamental to materials behaviour. In the case of group IV-VI, V and related materials, these interactions are strong, and the materials exist near electronic and structural phase transitions. The prototypical example is PbTe whose incipient ferroelectric behaviour has been recently associated with large phonon anharmonicity and thermoelectricity. Here we show that it is primarily electron-phonon coupling involving electron states near the band edges that leads to the ferroelectric instability in PbTe. Using a combination of nonequilibrium lattice dynamics measurements and first principles calculations, we find that photoexcitation reduces the Peierls-like electronic instability and reinforces the paraelectric state. This weakens the long-range forces along the cubic direction tied to resonant bonding and low lattice thermal conductivity. Our results demonstrate how free-electron-laser-based ultrafast X-ray scattering can be utilized to shed light on the microscopic mechanisms that determine materials properties.

The development of non-equilibrium group IV nanoscale alloys is critical to achieving new functionalities, such as the formation of a direct bandgap in a conventional indirect bandgap elemental semiconductor. Here, we describe the fabrication of uniform diameter, direct bandgap Ge1-xSnx alloy nanowires, with a Sn incorporation up to 9.2[thinsp]at.%, far in excess of the equilibrium solubility of Sn in bulk Ge, through a conventional catalytic bottom-up growth paradigm using noble metal and metal alloy catalysts. Metal alloy catalysts permitted a greater inclusion of Sn in Ge nanowires compared with conventional Au catalysts, when used during vapour-liquid-solid growth. The addition of an annealing step close to the Ge-Sn eutectic temperature (230[thinsp][deg]C) during cool-down, further facilitated the excessive dissolution of Sn in the nanowires. Sn was distributed throughout the Ge nanowire lattice with no metallic Sn segregation or precipitation at the surface or within the bulk of the nanowires. The non-equilibrium incorporation of Sn into the Ge nanowires can be understood in terms of a kinetic trapping model for impurity incorporation at the triple-phase boundary during growth.

The article covers basic inorganic chemistry of lead. As an introduction, the properties and historical uses of metallic lead are discussed, followed by aspects of lead toxicity, including the toxicity origins and effects of lead poisoning. Properties of lead as a heavy p-block element are discussed, with emphasis on the modern view of the so-called “inert pair effect”, including its origin, the influence on stability of lead oxidation states, and on the coordination chemistry of lead(II), viz., “sterically active lone pair”. This is followed by an overview of lead inorganic compounds, including halides, pseudohalides, oxides and chalcogenides, hydroxides and their chalcogenide analogs, alkoxides, oxoacids, O-donors, S- and Se-donors, Group 15 donors, compounds with lead-transition metal bonds, and finally metallic clusters (Zintl phases). This is by no means a comprehensive review, rather compounds representative for each class were presented. In most sections, structural aspects of each class of compounds are discussed, followed by applications, with the focus on modern uses in material science.

Introdução: O adequado selamento do sistema de canais radiculatres (SCR) obtido através da obturação, evita a infiltração de micro-organismos entre as paredes do canal radicular e o material obturador, reduzindo a possibilidade de insucesso do tratamento endodôntico (TE). A falta de selamento coronal, o atraso da colocação da restauração permanente, a fratura da restauração coronal, assim como uma espessura inadequada da restauração provisória, inferior a 4mm, podem, entre outros factores, ser predisponentes para a recontaminação do SCR obturado. Sendo o selamento da entrada do SCR uma importante etapa do TE, neste estudo pretendeu-se avaliar diferentes materiais para tal procedimento, avaliando qual o material que proporciona menor infiltração. Materiais e métodos: Neste estudo foram utilizados 70 dentes humanos monocanalares, que foram divididos aleatoriamente em 6 grupos. Grupo I (15 dentes) foram selados com ionómero de vidro modificado por resina (Ionoseal - VOCO®), Grupo II (15 dentes) foram selados com ionómero de vidro modicifado por resina (GC Fuji II LC- GA America®), Grupo III (15 dentes) foram selados por um compósito fluído (GrandioSO Heavy Flow - VOCO®), Grupo IV (15 dentes) foram selados por um compósito nanohíbrido (GrandioSO - VOCO®). O Grupo V (5 dentes) e o Grupo VI (5 dentes) foram usados como controlo negativo e positivo, respectivamente. Os dentes foram submetidos a termociclagem de 500 ciclos, de 60 segundos de duração cada um, com variações de temperatura de 5°C - 55°C. Em seguida, foram imersos em corante azul de metileno a 2% para avaliação da infiltração dos materiais. Resultados: Em geral, Ionoseal® demonstrou maior infiltração de corante que os outros materiais, e quando comparado com os demais grupos a diferença foi significativa. Porem entre os grupos 1, 2 e 3 não houve diferença estatística significante. Conclusões: LC Fuji II®, GrandioSo® Nano partícula Flow e GrandioSo® Nano partícula podem ser usados como barreira intracanalar.

Pre-reperfusion administration of intravenous (IV) metoprolol reduces infarct size in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). This study sought to determine how this cardioprotective effect is influenced by the timing of metoprolol therapy having either a long or short metoprolol bolus-to-reperfusion interval. We performed a post hoc analysis of the METOCARD-CNIC (effect of METOprolol of CARDioproteCtioN during an acute myocardial InfarCtion) trial, which randomized anterior STEMI patients to IV metoprolol or control before mechanical reperfusion. Treated patients were divided into short- and long-interval groups, split by the median time from 15 mg metoprolol bolus to reperfusion. We also performed a controlled validation study in 51 pigs subjected to 45 min ischemia/reperfusion. Pigs were allocated to IV metoprolol with a long (−25 min) or short (−5 min) pre-perfusion interval, IV metoprolol post-reperfusion (+60 min), or IV vehicle. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) was performed in the acute and chronic phases in both clinical and experimental settings. For 218 patients (105 receiving IV metoprolol), the median time from 15 mg metoprolol bolus to reperfusion was 53 min. Compared with patients in the short-interval group, those with longer metoprolol exposure had smaller infarcts (22.9 g vs. 28.1 g; p = 0.06) and higher left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (48.3% vs. 43.9%; p = 0.019) on day 5 CMR. These differences occurred despite total ischemic time being significantly longer in the long-interval group (214 min vs. 160 min; p < 0.001). There was no between-group difference in the time from symptom onset to metoprolol bolus. In the animal study, the long-interval group (IV metoprolol 25 min before reperfusion) had the smallest infarcts (day 7 CMR) and highest long-term LVEF (day 45 CMR). In anterior STEMI patients undergoing primary angioplasty, the sooner IV metoprolol is administered in the course of infarction, the smaller the infarct and the higher the LVEF. These hypothesis-generating clinical data are supported by a dedicated experimental large animal study.
