Nanocrystalline ZrO2:Eu was synthesized by complexing sol-gel method. The effects of heat treatment on structure, grain size and luminescence properties of ZrO2:Eu were studied with X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and photoluminescence measurements. The dependence between the fluorescence emission and the crystalline structure is discussed. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Scandia and ceria doped zirconia samples, with 10 mol% SC2O3 and different content of CeO2, were synthesized and characterized. The XRD results depict that the sintered samples have a cubic phase structure. However, Raman spectra show that besides the main cubic phase, a secondary phase is also present in the sintered samples. The addition of CeO2 can raise the content of the cubic phase, but the minor metastable tetragonal phase (t'-phase) exists even at the CeO2 content as high as 10 mol%. The near-UV Raman spectra indicate that the deformed tetragonal structure predominates at the grain boundary. The addition of CeO2 can reduce the impurity at grain boundary, and no impurity can be found by near-UV Raman spectroscopy at the grain boundary of the samples with high CeO2 content. The impedance measurements show that with the increase of CeO2 content, the impedance of grain boundary decreases and the bulk impedance increases. The low impedance of grain boundary can be attributed to the formation of a clean grain boundary upon CeO2 doping, and the increase of the bulk impedance is due to the blocking effect of the large Ce(IV) ions. Pd-supported on WO3-ZrO2 (W/Zr atomic ratio=0.2) calcined at 1073 K was found to be highly active and selective for gas-phase oxidation of ethylene to acetic acid in the presence of water at 423 K and 0.6 MPa. Contact time dependence demonstrated that acetic acid is formed via acetaldehyde formed by a Wacker-type reaction, not through ethanol by hydration of ethylene.

The present work investigates the reactivity of the surface species observable by in situ DRIFTS formed over a Pt/ZrO2 during the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction. A DRIFTS cell/mass spectrometer system was operated at the chemical steady state during isotopic transients to yield information about the true nature (i.e., main reaction intermediate or spectators) of adsorbates. Only carbonyl and formate species were observed by DRIFTS under reaction conditions; the surface coverage of carbonate species was negligible. Isotopic transient kinetic analyses revealed that formates exchanged uniformly according to a first-order law, suggesting that most formates observed by DRIFTS were of the same reactivity. In addition, the time scale of the exchange of the reaction product CO2 was significantly shorter than that of the surface formates. Therefore, a formate route based on the formates as detected by DRIFTS can be ruled out as the main reaction pathway in the present case. The number of precursors of the reaction product CO2 was smaller than the number of surface Pt atoms, suggesting that carbonyl species or some \

The mechanism for the formation of NH3 during the NO-H-2 reaction over Pt/ZrO2 was studied. Steady-state isotopic transient kinetic analysis was carried out with isotopic switching from (NO)-N-15-D-2 to (NO)-N-14-D-2, and the results revealed that formation of N-2 and N2O was associated with linearly adsorbed NO on the Pt surface, whereas ammonia formation was associated with NDx species adsorbed on ZrO2. The adsorbed NHx species were not observed on the surface of ZrO2 during NH3 adsorption. From transient kinetic experiments, the formation rates of NHx species and of gaseous NH3 agreed with each other, suggesting that the NHx species on ZrO2 was an ammonia intermediate. The NDx species did not react with D-2 directly, but H-D exchange occurred easily. The addition of H2O to the NO-H-2 feed gas enhanced the formation of NH3. In situ diffuse reflectance spectra and transient kinetic analysis revealed that H2O enhanced the conversion of NHx species to NH3.

Quasiparticle calculations are performed to investigate the electronic band structures of various polymorphs of Hf and Zr oxides. The corrections with respect to density-functional-theory results are found to depend only weakly on the crystal structure. Based on these bulk calculations as well as those for bulk Si, the effect of quasiparticle corrections is also investigated for the band offsets at the interface between these oxides and Si assuming that the lineup of the potential at the interface is reproduced correctly within density-functional theory. On the one hand, the valence-band offsets are practically unchanged with a correction of a few tenths of electron volts. On the other hand, conduction-band offsets are raised by 1.3-1.5 eV. When applied to existing calculations for the offsets at the density-functional-theory level, our quasiparticle corrections provide results in good agreement with the experiment.

The ac electrical response is studied in thin films composed of well-defined nanometric Co particles embedded in an insulating ZrO2 matrix which tends to coat them, preventing the formation of aggregates. In the dielectric regime, ac transport originates from the competition between interparticle capacitive Cp and tunneling Rt channels, the latter being thermally assisted. This competition yields an absorption phenomenon at a characteristic frequency 1/(RtCp), which is observed in the range 1010 000 Hz. In this way, the effective ac properties mimic the universal response of disordered dielectric materials. Temperature and frequency determine the complexity and nature of the ac electrical paths, which have been successfully modeled by an Rt-Cp network.

Catalysts with various nickel loads were prepared on supports of ZrO2, ZrO2-Y2O3 and ZrO2-CaO, characterized by XRD and TPR and tested for activity in ethanol steam reforming. XRD of the supports identified the monoclinic crystalline phase in the ZrO2 and cubic phases in the ZrO2-Y2O3 and ZrO2-CaO supports. In the catalysts, the nickel impregnated on the supports was identified as the NiO phase. In the TPR analysis, peaks were observed showing the NiO phase having different interactions with the supports. In the catalytic tests, practically all the catalysts achieved 100% ethanol conversion, H-2 yield was near 70% and the gaseous concentrations of the other co-products varied in accordance with the equilibrium among them, affected principally by the supports. It was observed that when the ZrO2 was modified with Y2O3 and CaO, there were big changes in the CO and CO2 concentrations, which were attributed to the rise in the number of oxygen vacancies, permitting high-oxygen mobility and affecting the gaseous equilibrium. The liquid products analysis showed a low selectivity to liquid co-products during the reforming reactions. (c) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.
