The buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) not only is a useful source of milk, it also provides meat and works as a natural source of labor and biogas. To establish a project for buffalo genome mapping a 5,000-rad whole genome radiation hybrid panel was constructed for river buffalo and used to build preliminary RH maps from two chromosomes (BBU 3 and BBU10). The preliminary maps contain 66 markers, including coding genes, cattle ESTs and microsatellite loci. The RH maps presented here are the starting point for mapping additional loci, in particular, genes and expressed sequence tags that will allow detailed comparative maps between buffalo, cattle and other species to be constructed. A large quantity of DNA has been prepared from the cell lines forming the RH panel reported here and will be made publicly available to the international community both for the study of chromosome evolution and for the improvement of traits important to the role of buffalo in animal agriculture.

The integrated and differential cross sections for the production of pairs of isolated photons is measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. A data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb(-1) is analysed. A next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation is compared to the measurements. A discrepancy is observed for regions of the phase space where the two photons have an azimuthal angle difference Delta phi less than or similar to 2.8 rad.

A utilização de sacos plásticos graduados para a medida da vazão de pulverizadores está ba stante di fundida entre técnicos e agricultores. 0 seu emprego é simples, consistindo, basicamente, em se coletar o líquido pulverizado por um bico durante o período equivalente ao deslocamento de 50 metros. O volume coletado é indicado numa escala graduada impr essa nos sacos calib rad ores e fornece diretament e a vazão em 1/ha. Firmas que comercializam os agro fármacos distribuem esses instrumentos aos agricultores, muitas vezes com propósitos puramente promocionais. Cinco sacos graduados de cada uma das 6 marcas diferentes foram aferidos. Agua a 20°C foi adicionada até as marcas de 100 1/ha, 250 1/ha e 400 1/ha. Esses volumes foram medidos em pro veta graduada e o volume real de pulverização foi calculado. Todos os saquinhos testados mostraram erros, em alguns bastante elevados, atingindo desvios de até 35,2%. Considerando esses resultados, é recomendada maior atenção na fabricação desses instrumentos. São sugeridas também algumas modificações da maneira de imprimir a escala e no conteúdo das instruções de uso.

In addition to the known diterpene casearin G (1), two new clerodane diterpene casearins type, casearin S (2) and casearin T (3), were isolated from an acetylated bioactive CH2Cl2/MeOH extract from leaves of Casealia sylvestris. The diterpenes 1-3 exhibited moderate but selective activity towards the DNA-repair deficient yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutants RAD 52YK and RS 321. The coagulation factor IX gene (179), the hypoxanthine phosphoribosyl transferase 1 gene (HPRT1), and the X-inactive specific transcript gene (XIST) were physically assigned in cattle to analyze chromosomal breakpoints on BTAX recently identified by radiation hybrid (RH) mapping experiments. Whereas the FISH assignment of XIST indicates a similar location on the q-arm of the human and cattle X chromosomes, the locus of HPRT1 supported the assumption of a chromosome rearrangement between the distal half of the q-arm of HSAX and the p-arm of BTAX identified by RH mapping. F9 previously located on the Cl-arm of BTAX was assigned to the p-arm of BTAX using RH mapping and FISH. The suggested new position of F9 close to HPRT I supports the homology between HSAXq and BTAXp. The F9 locus corresponds with the gene order found in the homologous human chromosome segment. XIST was assigned on BTAXq23, HPRT1 and F9 were mapped to BTAXp22, and the verification of the location of F9 in a 5000 rad cattle-hamster whole genome radiation hybrid panel linked the gene to markers URB10 and HPRT1. In a biological and phytochemical study on the leaves of Psychotria spectabilis Steyerm., seven compounds were isolated and identified from the CHCl3/MeOH (2:1, v/v) and MeOH extracts. Among the isolates were two diterpenes, solidagenone and deoxysolidagenone; three coumarins, coumarin, umbelliferone, and psoralene; and two flavonols, quercetin and quercetrin. Biological evaluations showed that diterpenes and coumarins exhibited antifungal activity against the filamentous fungi Cladosporium cladosporioides (Fresen) de Vries and C sphaerospermum Penzig. Solidagenone and psoralene also displayed selective cytotoxic activity against Rad 52Y mutant yeast strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this paper, the isolation, structure elucidation, and bioactivity results of these compounds are reported.

Comparative mapping data on evolutionary conserved coding sequences and synteny maps between human and cattle are insufficient to define the extent and distribution of conserved segments between these two species, because the order of loci is often rearranged. A 5000-rad cattle whole-genome radiation hybrid (WG-RH) panel was constructed to provide high-resolution comparative maps and also to integrate linkage maps of microsatellites with evolutionary conserved genes and transcripts in a single ordered map. We used the WG-RH panel to construct radiation hybrid maps of bovine Chromosomes (Chrs) 15 and 29 (BTA15 and BTA29), integrating microsatellites from published linkage maps with selected genes. The comprehensive map of BTA15 consists of 24 markers. 13 of which were placed in the framework map. Eleven molecular markers compose the comprehensive map of BTA29. seven of which were placed in the framework map. We identified the homologous regions between bovine Chr 15 (BTA15) and human Chrs 5 and 11 (HSA5 and HSA11), as well as between BTA29 and HSA11, the present study demonstrates that WG-RH mapping is an efficient method for integrating multiple genetic maps into one map and for incorporating monomorphic Type I loci into ordered maps for comparison between species.

We present a comprehensive radiation hybrid map of the bovine X chromosome (Chr) containing 20 new markers, including both microsatellites and expressed genes. This study was conducted with a 5000-rad whole genome RH cell panel consisting of 90 hybrid cell lines. Retention frequencies of individual markers range from 7.8% for XIST to 31.1% for TGLA325. Statistical analysis with RHMAPPER placed all the loci into five linkage groups under a LOD score criterion of 6.0. These groups could be oriented relative to each other because they included multiple microsatellite loci from the consensus linkage map of the X Chr. Markers included in both this RH map and the bovine cytogenetic map were in a consistent order. The comparative bovine-human map thus generated consists of five blocks of genes, the order of which is conserved, although in the opposite direction when presented as ideograms with p and q arms. Inversions of three blocks account for the difference in gene order across the entirety of the two X Chrs.

The alignment system for the muon spectrometer of the CMS detector comprises three independent subsystems of optical and analog position sensors. It aligns muon chambers with respect to each other and to the central silicon tracker. System commissioning at full magnetic field began in 2008 during an extended cosmic ray run. The system succeeded in tracking muon detector movements of up to 18 mm and rotations of several milliradians under magnetic forces. Depending on coordinate and subsystem, the system achieved chamber alignment precisions of 140-350 μm and 30-200 μrad, close to the precision requirements of the experiment. Systematic errors on absolute positions are estimated to be 340-590 μm based on comparisons with independent photogrammetry measurements. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.
