PZT ceramics were obtained from the mechanochemically synthesized powders. Milling and sintering conditions were optimized based on results of density measurements, as well as on microstructural and electrical characterization. As a result, highly dense and homogeneous ceramics were obtained. Excellent microstructural properties resulted in good electrical properties. Samples showed values of dielectric constants reaching 12800 at the Curie temperature, as well as low dielectric loss under the optimal processing conditions. High values of remanent polarization, reaching 60 muC cm(-2), indicate high internal polarizability. (C) 2003 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

The effect of heating rate on the sintering of agglomerated NaNbO3 powders, processed by the polymeric precursors method, was studied. The results showed that the presence of agglomerated powder leads to a heterogeneous microstructure, with bimodal grain size distribution, after sintering. Using a high heating rate, the sintering of agglomerated particles was inhibits, leading to a homogeneous microstructure, with single grain size distribution. (C) 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Nanosized and highly reactive magnesium mobate (MgNb2O6) powders were successfully synthesized by a new wet-chemical method by means of the dissolution of Nb2O5 center dot 5H(2)O and in a solution of oxalic acid followed by the addition of stoichiometric amounts of magnesium carbonate. The Nb-Mg-oxalic acid solution was evaporated resulting in a dry and amorphous powder that was calcined in the temperature range from 200 to 900 degrees C for 2 h. The crystallization process from the amorphous state to the crystalline MgNb2O6 was followed by thermal analysis. The calcined powders characterized by FT-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and their morphology examined by high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM). Pure MgNb2O6, free from the second phases and obtained at 800 degrees C was confirmed by a combined analysis using XRD and FT-Raman. The average diameter of the particles was calculated from the HR-SEM image as 70 urn approximately. This technique allows a better mixing of the constituent elements and thus a better reactivity of the mixture to obtain pre-reaction products with high purity at lower temperatures and reducing cost. It can offer a great advantage in the PMN-PT formation with respect to the solid-state synthesis. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

Ultra-fine powders of Na1-xLixNbO3 (x=0; 0.06; 0.09; 0.12) were synthesized by the Polymeric Precursors Method. Such powders had their orthorhombic structures determined by X-ray diffraction and their surface area determined by BET isotherms (less than 10 m(2) g(-1)). Densification was followed by dilatometric study. The powders, calcined at 700 degrees C for 5 h, were sintered at 1290 degrees C during 2 h under ambient atmosphere with no application of extra pressure. The samples with relative densities higher than 95% were analyzed by impedance spectroscopy at room temperature, under a signal amplitude of 1 V-rms. Dielectric constants of about 180 and dielectric loss factor of about 0.03 were measured showing small dependence with frequency. The electrical properties were similar to those obtained for samples sintered by hot pressing. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. Limited and Techna S.r.l. All rights reserved.

PZT ceramic powders were successfully prepared from the mixture of PbO, ZrO2 and TiO2 by mechanochemical synthesis in a planetary ball mill, under different milling conditions. Phase evolution during synthesis was monitored by X-ray diffraction analysis. Intensive milling resulted in formation of the nanocrystalline, perovskite PZT powders after 1 h of milling. This is a significant improvement in comparison to milling conditions reported by other authors. Depending on milling parameters the presence of some other phases, such as unreacted ZrO2, was also detected in some samples. The changes in powder size and morphology due to intensive milling, were determined by SEM and TEM, while BET analysis was used to determine specific surface area of the powders. Conclusions about processes taking place during mechanochemical synthesis of PZT powders were made based on the results of characterization. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Polycrystalline materials of SnO(2) doped with ZnO, WO(3), CoO, Nb(2)O(5), and MoO(3). were synthesized by solid state reaction. X-ray powder diffraction data were collected with Cu K(alpha) radiation from a Rigaku-Rint 2000 rotating anode source. The structural and profile parameters were refined by the Rietveld method using GSAS [2]. The obtained residual parameters are R(wp) = 11,93% and R(Bragg) = 4,19%. The refined profile parameters indicate no anisotropic crystallite microstrain. The refinement results and Fourier differences calculations indicate that the dopants do not occupy interstitial sites in the crystal structure of SnO(2).

This work was conducted to evaluate food intake and digestive efficiency of temperate wool and tropic semi-arid hair lambs, according to different concentrate: forage ratios in diet. Twenty-four lambs, averaging 90 +/- 1.8 days old and a mean body weight of 20 +/- 0.69 kg, 12 of them wool lambs, F, from Ideal x Ile de France crossing, and 12 others pure Santa Ines hair lambs, were distributed into a four replication 3 x 2 factorial arrangement consisting of three diets and two genotypes. Experimental diets consisted of: D1 = 60% concentrate mix (C) and 40% Cynodon sp. cv. Tifton-85 hay (F), D2 = 40% C and 60% F, and D3 = 20% C and 80% F. D1 was formulated for a daily gain of 300g per animal. Increasing forage levels in diets resulted in linear reductions (P < 0.01) in DM, OM, CP, TCH and metabolizable energy (ME) intake, and a linear increase (P < 0.01) in NDF ingestion. Tropic semi-arid hair lambs had higher DM, OM, NDF, CP, and TCH intake than temperate wool lambs. Although there were no genotype effects in OM and GE coefficient of digestibility, hair lambs showed more efficient (P < 0.05) digestibility of DM, CP, NDF and TCH. Increases in forage levels of diets corresponded to a negative linear effect (P < 0.01) in the apparent digestibility of DM, OM, CP, TCH and GE, while apparent digestibility of NDF increased linearly (P < 0.01). Total endogenous nitrogen (fecal plus urinary N) for F(1) Ideal x Ilede France wool and Santa Ines hair lambs were, respectively, 182 and 312 mg/kg(0.75) per day. Thus, Santa Ines tropic semi-arid hair lambs showed to be more responsive than F(1) Ideal x Ile de France temperate wool lambs to low quality fibrous diets. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The partial oxalate method, with the columbite route, associated with the Pechini method, was used to obtain a very fine ceramic powder at low temperature. Using this route it was possible to obtain a very reactive powder and to synthesize a lead magnesium niobate (PMN) powder with up to 100% of perovskite phase at a lower temperatures than the PbO melting point. The influence of the BaTiO3 and PbTiO3 seeds in the phase formation, along with time and temperature during the PMN calcination, was also investigated. The amount of 2% of BaTiO3 seeds promoted PMN powder formation with 100% of perovskite phase and a very narrow particle size distribution. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd and Techna S.r.l. Gallium-doped zinc oxide (ZnO:Ga 1, 2 3, 4 and 5 at%) samples were prepared in powder form by modifying the Pechini method. The formation of zinc gallate (ZnGa2O4) With the spinel crystal structure was observed even in ZnO:Ga 1 at% by X-ray diffraction. The presence of ZnGa2O4 in ZnO:Ga samples was also evidenced by luminescence spectroscopy through its blue emission at 430 nm, assigned to charge transfer between Ga3+ at regular octahedral symmetry and its surrounding O2- ions. The amount of ZnGa2O4 increases as the dopant concentration increases, as observed by the quantitative phase analysis by the Rietveld method. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Boehmite (gamma-AlOOH) synthesis have been investigated using a spray pyrolysis (SP) device starting from a stable sol of Al-tri-sec-butoxide peptized by nitric acid. Free spherical particles from 100 to 500 nm have been elaborated. Particles sub-structure is made of nano-crystalline boehmite with very small average crystallite size (one crystal cell along the b axis). The nano-crystalline boehmite synthesized by SP at low temperature (200 degrees C) is spontaneously dispersible in water without any surface treatment. Boehmite powder may be transformed to transition gamma-alumina by heat post-treatment. Powders of sub-micrometric and spherical gamma-alumina particles may also be synthesized by SP at 700 degrees C. The study of the photoluminescent properties affected by order and disorder of the BaMoO4 powders is the principal objective in this work. BaMoO4 compounds were prepared using soft chemical process called Complex Polymerization Method. In this work, different deagglomeration types and different heating rates were used to promote different disorder degrees. Scheelite type phase (BaMoO4) was determined by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transformed Infra-Red (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy after heat treating the sample at 400 degrees C. The room temperature luminescence spectra revealed an intense single-emission band in the visible region. Based on XRD and Raman data it was observed that the transition between the completely disordered structure to completely ordered structure is a good condition for photoluminescence (PL) emission. The best PL emission is obtained when the material possesses short range disorder, i.e., is periodically ordered (XRD), but some disorder as measured by Raman spectroscopy. The excellent optical properties observed for disordered BaMoO4 suggested that this material is a highly promising candidate for optical applications.

Intense and broad visible photoluminescent (PL) band was observed at room temperature in disordered Pb(Zr(0.53)Ti(0.47))O(3) powders. Structural order-disorder was evaluated by different methods. XANES results pointed to the presence of different coordination modes of disordered Ti powders, and in the ordered sample the local structure around titanium atoms is characteristic of the structurally ordered PZT with only TiO(6) units. Only samples containing simultaneous structural order and disorder in their network present the intense visible PL emission at room temperature.
