Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli arvioida alueellista kehitystä tietämysperustaisesta aluenäkemyksestä käsin Kanta-Hämeen maakunnassa. Tarkoituksena oli myös selvittää millaisia resursseja alueella on tai tulisi olla tulevaisuuden kestävää kilpailukykyä ajatellen. Tietämysperustaisen aluenäkemyksen mukaan kaikista alueella käytettävissä olevista resursseista alueen kestävän kilpailukyvyn lähteenä on tieto, erityisesti hiljainen tieto. Kirjallisuus korostaa myös innovaatioiden merkitystä kilpailukyvyn lähteenä. Työssä käytetystä näkökulmasta katsoen innovaatiot ovat epälineaarisia ja vuorovaikutteisia oppimisprosesseja, joissa sosiaaliset tekijät, kuten yhteistyö ja oppiminen ovat tärkeitä. Työn empiirinen osuus koostuu ryhmähaastatteluista ja yrityskyselystä. Ryhmähaastatteluja käytettiin alueen nykyisen teknotaloudellisen tilanteen ymmärtämiseksi. Ryhmä koostui viidestätoista alueen kehittäjäorganisaatioihin kuuluneesta toimijasta. Ryhmähaastattelujen perusteella yhteistyö, vuorovaikutus ja sosiaalinen pääoma olivat niiden tekijöiden joukossa, jotka vaikuttavat alueen pitkän aikavälin kehittämiseen. Ryhmähaastattelujen avulla oli myös mahdollista muodostaa joitakin ehdotuksia alueen kilpailukykyä koskevista kehittämisen edellytyksistä. Nämä ehdotukset täytyy testata tulevaisuudessa. Tarvitaan myös tarkempaa tutkimusta esimerkiksi sen ymmärtämiseksi, mitkä tekijät vaikuttavat sosiaalisen pääoman muotoutumiseen alueen eri toimijoiden välillä. Yrityskysely koostui 86 yrityksen tiedoista. Kysely toteutettiin kesällä 2004. Tuote- ja palveluinnovaatioilla ja innovaatiotoimintaan tehdyillä tutkimus- ja kehittämispanostuksilla mitaten alueen yrityksissä on innovaatiotoimintaa. Kyselyn perusteella oli myös mahdollista saada selville joitain yritysten innovaatioympäristön kannalta tärkeitä tekijöitä. Toisaalta eräät tulokset olivat osittain ristiriitaisia. Tämän vuoksi esimerkiksi alueen yritysten innovaatiokyvykkyyteen on lähitulevaisuudessa kiinnitettävä enemmän huomiota.

Recent research has highlighted the existence of a social bias in the extent to which children have access to childcare. In general, children living in higher income households are more likely to be cared for in childcare centres. While the existence of a social bias in access to childcare services has been clearly demonstrated, we currently lack a clear explanation as to why this is the case. This paper uses a unique dataset based on survey data collected specifically to study patterns of childcare use in the Swiss canton of Vaud (N = 875). The paper exploits the variation in the way childcare is organised within the canton. Childcare is a municipal policy, as a result of which there are twenty-nine different systems in operation. Fees are progressive everywhere, but variation is substantial. Availability is also very different. This peculiar institutional setup provides an ideal situation to examine the determinants of childcare use by different income groups. Our findings suggest that differences in the fees charged to low-income households, as well as the degree of progressivity of the fee structure, are significant predictors of use, while availability seems to matter less.

This R package provides to sociologists (and related scientists) a toolbox to facilitate the construction of social position indicators from survey data. Social position indicators refer to what is commonly known as social class and social status. There exists in the sociological literature many theoretical conceptualisation and empirical operationalization of social class and social status. This first version of the package offers tools to construct the International Socio-Economic Index of Occupational Status (ISEI) and the Oesch social class schema. It also provides tools to convert several occupational classifications (PCS82, PCS03, and ISCO08) into a common one (ISCO88) to facilitate data harmonisation work, and tools to collapse (i.e. group) modalities of social position indicators.

Intermunicipal cooperation is being increasingly adopted in various countries as a part of local service delivery reforms. This paper draws on survey data from Spain’s municipalities to examine the reasons underpinning the decisions of local governments to engage in intermunicipal cooperation and privatisation. Our empirical analysis indicates that small municipalities prefer to rely on cooperation for reducing costs, while their larger counterparts prefer to privatise the delivery of services. By cooperating, scale economies can be achieved with lower transaction costs and fewer concerns for competition than is the case via private production.

Wastewater-based epidemiology consists in acquiring relevant information about the lifestyle and health status of the population through the analysis of wastewater samples collected at the influent of a wastewater treatment plant. Whilst being a very young discipline, it has experienced an astonishing development since its firs application in 2005. The possibility to gather community-wide information about drug use has been among the major field of application. The wide resonance of the first results sparked the interest of scientists from various disciplines. Since then, research has broadened in innumerable directions. Although being praised as a revolutionary approach, there was a need to critically assess its added value, with regard to the existing indicators used to monitor illicit drug use. The main, and explicit, objective of this research was to evaluate the added value of wastewater-based epidemiology with regards to two particular, although interconnected, dimensions of illicit drug use. The first is related to trying to understand the added value of the discipline from an epidemiological, or societal, perspective. In other terms, to evaluate if and how it completes our current vision about the extent of illicit drug use at the population level, and if it can guide the planning of future prevention measures and drug policies. The second dimension is the criminal one, with a particular focus on the networks which develop around the large demand in illicit drugs. The goal here was to assess if wastewater-based epidemiology, combined to indicators stemming from the epidemiological dimension, could provide additional clues about the structure of drug distribution networks and the size of their market. This research had also an implicit objective, which focused on initiating the path of wastewater- based epidemiology at the Ecole des Sciences Criminelles of the University of Lausanne. This consisted in gathering the necessary knowledge about the collection, preparation, and analysis of wastewater samples and, most importantly, to understand how to interpret the acquired data and produce useful information. In the first phase of this research, it was possible to determine that ammonium loads, measured directly in the wastewater stream, could be used to monitor the dynamics of the population served by the wastewater treatment plant. Furthermore, it was shown that on the long term, the population did not have a substantial impact on consumption patterns measured through wastewater analysis. Focussing on methadone, for which precise prescription data was available, it was possible to show that reliable consumption estimates could be obtained via wastewater analysis. This allowed to validate the selected sampling strategy, which was then used to monitor the consumption of heroin, through the measurement of morphine. The latter, in combination to prescription and sales data, provided estimates of heroin consumption in line with other indicators. These results, combined to epidemiological data, highlighted the good correspondence between measurements and expectations and, furthermore, suggested that the dark figure of heroin users evading harm-reduction programs, which would thus not be measured by conventional indicators, is likely limited. In the third part, which consisted in a collaborative study aiming at extensively investigating geographical differences in drug use, wastewater analysis was shown to be a useful complement to existing indicators. In particular for stigmatised drugs, such as cocaine and heroin, it allowed to decipher the complex picture derived from surveys and crime statistics. Globally, it provided relevant information to better understand the drug market, both from an epidemiological and repressive perspective. The fourth part focused on cannabis and on the potential of combining wastewater and survey data to overcome some of their respective limitations. Using a hierarchical inference model, it was possible to refine current estimates of cannabis prevalence in the metropolitan area of Lausanne. Wastewater results suggested that the actual prevalence is substantially higher compared to existing figures, thus supporting the common belief that surveys tend to underestimate cannabis use. Whilst being affected by several biases, the information collected through surveys allowed to overcome some of the limitations linked to the analysis of cannabis markers in wastewater (i.e., stability and limited excretion data). These findings highlighted the importance and utility of combining wastewater-based epidemiology to existing indicators about drug use. Similarly, the fifth part of the research was centred on assessing the potential uses of wastewater-based epidemiology from a law enforcement perspective. Through three concrete examples, it was shown that results from wastewater analysis can be used to produce highly relevant intelligence, allowing drug enforcement to assess the structure and operations of drug distribution networks and, ultimately, guide their decisions at the tactical and/or operational level. Finally, the potential to implement wastewater-based epidemiology to monitor the use of harmful, prohibited and counterfeit pharmaceuticals was illustrated through the analysis of sibutramine, and its urinary metabolite, in wastewater samples. The results of this research have highlighted that wastewater-based epidemiology is a useful and powerful approach with numerous scopes. Faced with the complexity of measuring a hidden phenomenon like illicit drug use, it is a major addition to the panoply of existing indicators. -- L'épidémiologie basée sur l'analyse des eaux usées (ou, selon sa définition anglaise, « wastewater-based epidemiology ») consiste en l'acquisition d'informations portant sur le mode de vie et l'état de santé d'une population via l'analyse d'échantillons d'eaux usées récoltés à l'entrée des stations d'épuration. Bien qu'il s'agisse d'une discipline récente, elle a vécu des développements importants depuis sa première mise en oeuvre en 2005, notamment dans le domaine de l'analyse des résidus de stupéfiants. Suite aux retombées médiatiques des premiers résultats de ces analyses de métabolites dans les eaux usées, de nombreux scientifiques provenant de différentes disciplines ont rejoint les rangs de cette nouvelle discipline en développant plusieurs axes de recherche distincts. Bien que reconnu pour son coté objectif et révolutionnaire, il était nécessaire d'évaluer sa valeur ajoutée en regard des indicateurs couramment utilisés pour mesurer la consommation de stupéfiants. En se focalisant sur deux dimensions spécifiques de la consommation de stupéfiants, l'objectif principal de cette recherche était focalisé sur l'évaluation de la valeur ajoutée de l'épidémiologie basée sur l'analyse des eaux usées. La première dimension abordée était celle épidémiologique ou sociétale. En d'autres termes, il s'agissait de comprendre si et comment l'analyse des eaux usées permettait de compléter la vision actuelle sur la problématique, ainsi que déterminer son utilité dans la planification des mesures préventives et des politiques en matière de stupéfiants actuelles et futures. La seconde dimension abordée était celle criminelle, en particulier, l'étude des réseaux qui se développent autour du trafic de produits stupéfiants. L'objectif était de déterminer si cette nouvelle approche combinée aux indicateurs conventionnels, fournissait de nouveaux indices quant à la structure et l'organisation des réseaux de distribution ainsi que sur les dimensions du marché. Cette recherche avait aussi un objectif implicite, développer et d'évaluer la mise en place de l'épidémiologie basée sur l'analyse des eaux usées. En particulier, il s'agissait d'acquérir les connaissances nécessaires quant à la manière de collecter, traiter et analyser des échantillons d'eaux usées, mais surtout, de comprendre comment interpréter les données afin d'en extraire les informations les plus pertinentes. Dans la première phase de cette recherche, il y pu être mis en évidence que les charges en ammonium, mesurées directement dans les eaux usées permettait de suivre la dynamique des mouvements de la population contributrice aux eaux usées de la station d'épuration de la zone étudiée. De plus, il a pu être démontré que, sur le long terme, les mouvements de la population n'avaient pas d'influence substantielle sur le pattern de consommation mesuré dans les eaux usées. En se focalisant sur la méthadone, une substance pour laquelle des données précises sur le nombre de prescriptions étaient disponibles, il a pu être démontré que des estimations exactes sur la consommation pouvaient être tirées de l'analyse des eaux usées. Ceci a permis de valider la stratégie d'échantillonnage adoptée, qui, par le bais de la morphine, a ensuite été utilisée pour suivre la consommation d'héroïne. Combinée aux données de vente et de prescription, l'analyse de la morphine a permis d'obtenir des estimations sur la consommation d'héroïne en accord avec des indicateurs conventionnels. Ces résultats, combinés aux données épidémiologiques ont permis de montrer une bonne adéquation entre les projections des deux approches et ainsi démontrer que le chiffre noir des consommateurs qui échappent aux mesures de réduction de risque, et qui ne seraient donc pas mesurés par ces indicateurs, est vraisemblablement limité. La troisième partie du travail a été réalisée dans le cadre d'une étude collaborative qui avait pour but d'investiguer la valeur ajoutée de l'analyse des eaux usées à mettre en évidence des différences géographiques dans la consommation de stupéfiants. En particulier pour des substances stigmatisées, telles la cocaïne et l'héroïne, l'approche a permis d'objectiver et de préciser la vision obtenue avec les indicateurs traditionnels du type sondages ou les statistiques policières. Globalement, l'analyse des eaux usées s'est montrée être un outil très utile pour mieux comprendre le marché des stupéfiants, à la fois sous l'angle épidémiologique et répressif. La quatrième partie du travail était focalisée sur la problématique du cannabis ainsi que sur le potentiel de combiner l'analyse des eaux usées aux données de sondage afin de surmonter, en partie, leurs limitations. En utilisant un modèle d'inférence hiérarchique, il a été possible d'affiner les actuelles estimations sur la prévalence de l'utilisation de cannabis dans la zone métropolitaine de la ville de Lausanne. Les résultats ont démontré que celle-ci est plus haute que ce que l'on s'attendait, confirmant ainsi l'hypothèse que les sondages ont tendance à sous-estimer la consommation de cannabis. Bien que biaisés, les données récoltées par les sondages ont permis de surmonter certaines des limitations liées à l'analyse des marqueurs du cannabis dans les eaux usées (i.e., stabilité et manque de données sur l'excrétion). Ces résultats mettent en évidence l'importance et l'utilité de combiner les résultats de l'analyse des eaux usées aux indicateurs existants. De la même façon, la cinquième partie du travail était centrée sur l'apport de l'analyse des eaux usées du point de vue de la police. Au travers de trois exemples, l'utilisation de l'indicateur pour produire du renseignement concernant la structure et les activités des réseaux de distribution de stupéfiants, ainsi que pour guider les choix stratégiques et opérationnels de la police, a été mise en évidence. Dans la dernière partie, la possibilité d'utiliser cette approche pour suivre la consommation de produits pharmaceutiques dangereux, interdits ou contrefaits, a été démontrée par l'analyse dans les eaux usées de la sibutramine et ses métabolites. Les résultats de cette recherche ont mis en évidence que l'épidémiologie par l'analyse des eaux usées est une approche pertinente et puissante, ayant de nombreux domaines d'application. Face à la complexité de mesurer un phénomène caché comme la consommation de stupéfiants, la valeur ajoutée de cette approche a ainsi pu être démontrée.

Female gender and low income are two markers for groups that have been historically disadvantaged within most societies. The study explores two research questions related to their political representation: 1) Are parties ideologically biased towards the ideological preferences of male and rich citizens? 2) Does the proportionality of the electoral system moderate the degree of underrepresentation of women and poor citizens in the party system? A multilevel analysis of survey data from 24 parliamentary democracies indicates that there is some bias against those with low income and, at a much smaller rate, women. This has systemic consequences for the quality of representation, as the preferences of the complementary groups differ. The proportionality of the electoral system influences the degree of underrepresentation: specifically, larger district magnitudes help closing the considerable gap between rich and poor.

We explore the relationship between quality in work and aggregate productivity in regions and sectors. Using recent Spanish aggregate data for the period 2001-2006, we find that quality in work may be an important factor to explain productivity levels in sectors and regions. We use two alternatives definitions of quality in work: one from survey data and the other from a social indicators approach. We also use two different measurements of labour productivity to test the robustness of our results. The estimates are run using a simultaneous equation model for our panel of data, and find important differences between high tech and low tech sectors: a positive relationship between quality in work and productivity in the former case, and a negative relationship in the latter. Consequently, on the one hand we see that quality in work is not only an objective per se, but may also be a production factor able to increase the wealth of regions; on the other hand, at the aggregate level, we may also find that high productivity levels coincide with lower quality in work conditions.

The empirical literature about factors explaining local government delivery choices has traditionally focused the attention on the public or private production dilemma. However, hybrid organizational forms such as mixed public-private firms are increasingly used in several European countries. This paper makes use of survey data from Spanish municipalities to examine motivations of local governments for engaging in hybrid organizational forms. Data refer to two very relevant local services: water distribution and solid waste collection. The empirical analysis indicates that the use of mixed firms emerge as a type of pragmatically based ‘third way’ between pure public and pure private production. Indeed, local governments make use of mixed firms when cost considerations (scale economies, transaction costs and soon), financial constraints and private interests exert contradictory pressures. On the contrary, political and ideological factors do not play any significant role on the local government decision of engaging or not in joint ventures with private partners.

The ability of the supplier firm to generate and utilise customer-specific knowledge has attracted increasing attention in the academic literature during the last decade. It has been argued the customer knowledge should treated as a strategic asset the same as any other intangible assets. Yet, at the same time it has been shown that the management of customer-specific knowledge is challenging in practice, and that many firms are better at acquiring customer knowledge than at making use of it. This study examines customer knowledge processing in the context of key account management in large industrial firms. This focus was chosen because key accounts are demanding and complex. It is not unusual for a single key account relationship to constitute a complex web of relationships between the supplier and the key account – thus easily leading to the dispersion of customer-specific knowledge in the supplier firm. Although the importance of customer-specific knowledge generation has been widely acknowledged in the literature, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the processes through which firms generate, disseminate and use such knowledge internally for enhancing the relationships with their major, strategically important key account customers. This thesis consists of two parts. The first part comprises a theoretical overview and draws together the main findings of the study, whereas the second part consists of five complementary empirical research papers based on survey data gathered from large industrial firms in Finland. The findings suggest that the management of customer knowledge generated about and form key accounts is a three-dimensional process consisting of acquisition, dissemination and utilization. It could be concluded from the results that customer-specific knowledge is a strategic asset because the supplier’s customer knowledge processing activities have a positive effect on supplier’s key account performance. Moreover, in examining the determinants of each phase separately the study identifies a number of intra-organisational factors that facilitate the process in supplier firms. The main contribution of the thesis lies in linking the concept of customer knowledge processing to the previous literature on key account management. Moreover, given than this literature is mainly conceptual or case-based, a further contribution is to examine its consequences and determinants based on quantitative empirical data.

The resources of the step family and the children’s well-being The present study investigates children's well-being in stepfamilies and fac¬tors, both external and internal, that are related to the children's well-being. Of the external factors, the study focuses on factors related to the structure of the stepfamily, parents' education, socio-economic status and factors related to work, livelihood and living conditions. The internal resources include the general functioning of the family, parenthood and parenting, family support networks and issues that the stepfamilies themselves consider important. Another important resource in a stepfamily is a functioning network of human relationships, which in the present study is approached from the maternal viewpoint. Changing family relations are considered a potential threat to the children's well-being. Therefore, in addition to looking into the stepfamily's resources, the other important goal of the study is to explore other factors potentially related to the well-being of children living in stepfamilies. In view of the stepfamily's resources, it is important to explore how the functioning of the relationships network is linked with the child's well-being. The study employs survey and interview data. The survey data (n=2236) are part of national survey data on the well-being of families and children and factors impacting them which were gathered as part of ”Origins of Exclusion in Early Childhood”, a research project carried out in 2002. The data consists of 667 stepfamilies. The interview data consists of interviews with 24 parents in stepfamilies. In the study, the analyses of survey and interview data are combined. Both descriptive statistical analyses and multivariate methods are employed. Content analysis is employed in the analysis of the interview data. The results indicate that the stepfamilies’ resources in general but their external resources in particular differed from those of the nuclear and single-parent families. The level of education and the socio-economic status of the stepfamily parents were somewhat lower than those of the nuclear family parents. The differences in relation to single-parent families were primarily related to the better economic status of the stepfamilies. The analysis of internal resources showed relatively minor differences: the stepfamilies assessed themselves a somewhat better general functioning of the family than did the nuclear families. Parenting issues caused more disagreement in stepfamilies than in nuclear families. The analysis of the functioning of the human relations in stepfamilies showed that the stepfamily mothers experienced the external relationships of the family (e.g., between the child and the absent father) as significantly more problematic than the relationships within the stepfamily. Living in a stepfamily thus challenges the functioning of the relationship between the child and the absent father. As a result of the analysis of the relationships networks in the stepfamilies, three groups were formed. One group had the nuclear family as an ideal goal, another valued an extended family composed of a variety of relationships, and the third one appreciated a strong intimate relationship between the parents. In the present study, the most common group was the multi-relationship, extended type of stepfamily. In conclusion, living in a stepfamily does not seem to pose a risk to the child’s well-being, but it may influence the family’s resources and thus have an indirect effect on the child’s well-being. In view of the resources of the stepfamily, the child’s well-being was best supported by a functioning network of human relationships in the stepfamily: there was a distinct connection with the children’s problems and the non-functioning of the relationships network. According to the mothers, the internal relationships in the stepfamily seemed to be more important than the external relationships of the family. A child’s functioning relationship with the absent father can be viewed as a positive resource, supporting the child’s well-being in the stepfamily.

The main objective of this study is to examine the relationships between resources, competitive advantage and firm success. The study focuses, on one hand, on the financial performance of service-intensive manufac-turing firms against competitors with a lower service intensity and, on the other hand, on the resources as drivers for competitive advantage and success. The purpose of the theoretical part is to link the study in the field of the strategy research. The empirical part of the study is based on the quantitative analyses of the survey data collected from 50 major suppliers of industrial machinery and transportation equipment in Europe and North America. Results indicate that service-intensive manufacturing firms have performed better and their performance has been more stable vis-à-vis their peers. The main resources that differentiate service-intensive manufacturing firms from their non-service intensive competitors are service strategy and service-oriented top management. The analyses on the VRIO resources produced only a limited amount of information and solely service-centred culture appeared to be a rent generating resource.

Tässä väitöstutkimuksessa tarkastellaan Suomen osakeyhtiölain pakottavien varojenjakosäännösten vaikutusta osingonjakopaatoksiin. Lain vaikutuksen seuraamisen lisäksi pyritään muodostamaan kokonaiskuva tekijöistä, jotka vaikuttavat pienissä yhtiöissä tehtäviin osingonjakopäätöksiin. Väitöskirja koostuu kahdesta eri osasta. Ensimmäisessä osassa osoitetaan, kuinka toisen osan artikkelit muodostavat kokonaisuuden ja esitellään tutkimustulokset. Väitöskirjan toinen osa koostuu neljästä toisiaan täydentävästä artikkelista. Tutkimus etenee julkaisujen myötä ensin maksukykytestin määrittelystä maksukykytestiin liittyviin oikeudellisiin ongelmiin sekä tilinpaatoksen merkitykseen osingonjakopäätöksissä, siirtyen sitten omistaja johtajan tarpeisiin ja tavoitteisiin, päättyen lopuksi velkojan näkökulmaan. Tutkimuksen tavoitteeksi asetettiin kokonaiskuvan muodostaminen niistä tekijöistä, jotka vaikuttavat osingonjakopäätöksen tekemiseen pienissä osakeyhtiöissä. Tavoitteena oli myös selvittää kuinka osakeyhtiölain 13 luvun varojenjakosäännökset otetaan huomioon osingonjakopäätöstä tehtäessä. Tutkimusaineistona käytettiin sekä kyselytutkimusaineistoa että tilinpäätöstietoja. Aineistoa analysoitiin kvantitatiivisin menetelmin. Tutkimusaineistosta löydettiin kolme erilaista varallisuuden siirtämisen strategiaa. Ne nimettiin seuraavasti: tulojen maksimointi, verosuunnittelu, palkan jousto. Tutkimuksesta nousee esiin kolme keskeistä tulosta. Ensinnäkin, liiketaloustieteellinen maksukyvyn merkitys poikkeaa oikeustieteessä käsitetystä maksukyvystä. Toiseksi, osakeyhtiölain 13 luvun varojenjakosäännökset tulee ottaa huomioon sekä osingonjakopäätöstä tehtäessä että varojen tosiasiallisesti siirtyessä pois yhtiön vaikutuspiiristä. Kolmanneksi, pääomatuloverotuksen kiristyessä omistaja johtaja saattaa siirtää varallisuutta yhtiöstä yksityistalouteen osingon sijasta palkkana. Tämän seurauksena maksukykytestin merkitys vähenee erityisesti pienissä yhtiöissä. Tulosten perusteella tasetesti näyttää olevan pienissä yhtiöissä maksukykytestiä merkityksellisempi.

Maahanmuuttajien määrä on Suomessa merkittävämmin lisääntynyt vasta 1990- ja 2000-luvuilla. Vuonna 2010 Suomessa asui lähes 170 000 ulkomaan kansalaista. Tavallisimmin Suomeen muutetaan avioliiton, paluumuuton tai pakolaisuuden vuoksi. Pieni, joskin kasvava joukko muuttaa työn tai opiskelun vuoksi. Myös kansalaisuuksien, koulutustaustojen, ammattien jne. kirjo muuttajien joukossa on suuri. Ulkomaan kansalaisten lisääntyessä Suomessa on jouduttu kohtaamaan monenlaisia maahanmuuttoon liittyviä haasteita, joista työllistymiseen liittyvät kysymykset eivät ole vähäisimpiä. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan lähtömaassaan korkeakoulututkinnon suorittaneiden maahanmuuttajien työllistymistä ja työuran alkua Suomessa. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää, miten korkeakoulutetut maahanmuuttajat ovat Suomessa työllistyneet, minkälaisia heidän työuriensa alut ovat Suomessa olleet ja miten he ovat onnistuneet uudessa maassa hyödyntämään lähtömaassa hankkimaansa koulutusta. Lisäksi tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan, miten maahanmuuttajien lähtömaan erilaiset elämäntilanteet, olosuhteet ja valinnat ovat vaikuttaneet työuran muotoutumiseen Suomessa. Tutkimuksen aineisto muodostuu kysely- sekä haastatteluaineistosta. Kyselyaineiston (n=99) tarkoituksena on luoda määrällistä kuvaa korkeakoulutettujen maahanmuuttajien työllistymisestä Suomessa. Numerotietojen taakse jää kuitenkin näkymättömiin tieto maahanmuuttajien yksilöllisistä kokemuksista liittyen työllistymiseen ja työuran muotoutumiseen uudessa maassa. Toisena aineistona hyödynnettävän elämäkerrallisen haastatteluaineiston (n=20) kautta on mahdollista tehdä näkyväksi ne tutkittavien yksilölliset työ- ja koulutusuraan liittyvät valinnat, joita maahanmuuttajat ovat tehneet niin lähtömaassa kuin Suomessa sekä ne tilanteet ja olosuhteet, joissa tutkittavat ovat lähtömaassa eläneet ja joiden pohjalta he ovat tulleet Suomeen ja Suomen työmarkkinoille. Aineistoissa mukana olevat maahanmuuttajat olivat pääosin avioliiton, paluumuuton sekä pakolaisuuden vuoksi Suomeen tulleita. Vain muutama oli tullut työn vuoksi. Maahanmuuttajien työmarkkina-asemaa selitetään usein maahanmuuttajien resursseilla, kuten kielitaidolla, koulutuksella, työkokemuksella, sosiaalisten suhteiden ja verkostojen laadulla ja määrällä jne. Myös maahanmuuttajiin kohdistuvilla syrjivillä ja ennakkoluuloisilla asenteilla on keskeinen merkitys työllistymisessä. Koulutuksen ollessa yksi keskeisimmistä työmarkkina-asemaa määräävistä tekijöistä, tulisi koulutettujen maahanmuuttajien sijoittua hankitun tutkinnon oikeuttamiin tehtäviin. Tutkimuksessa kuitenkin havaittiin, että työllistyminen oli maahanmuuttajilla vaikeaa hyvästä koulutuksesta huolimatta. Kyselyaineistoon vastanneista vain muutama (6 %) oli työssä heti Suomeen muuttovuoden lopussa, kolme vuotta Suomessa asuttuaan työssä oli runsas kolmannes (35 %) ja aineistonkeruuhetkellä eli vuonna 2004 työssä oli 38 % vastaajista. Työsuhteet olivat tutkittavilla useimmiten määräaikaisia ja kestoltaan lyhyitä. Lisäksi työurat koostuivat runsaasta työttömyydestä sekä koulutukseen osallistumisesta. Myönteistä kuitenkin oli, että mikäli korkeakoulutetut maahanmuuttajat onnistuivat Suomessa työllistymään, vastasi työ usein joko kokonaan tai ainakin osittain hankittua korkeakoulututkintoa. Korkeakoulutettujen maahanmuuttajien työuran alut Suomessa voidaan tyypitellä kolmeen ryhmään, joista kukin jakaantui vielä kahteen alaryhmään siten, että kaiken kaikkiaan saatiin kuusi erilaista työuran alun tyyppiä: koulutusta vastaava vakaa ja vakiintuva ura, koulutusta osittain vastaava sekaura ja laskeva ura sekä koulutusta vastaamaton sisääntuloura ja työttömän ura . Haastatteluaineiston kautta tarkastellaan korkeakoulutettujen maahanmuuttajien yksilöllisiä elämänuria lähtien liikkeelle korkeakoulutettujen maahanmuuttajien lähtömaassa tekemistä ura- ja ammatinvalinnoista jatkuen Suomeen muuton kautta aina työuran muotoutumiseen Suomessa. Haastatteluja toisistaan erottelevina keskeisinä teemoina olivat toisaalta pärjääminen Suomessa ja suomalaisilla työmarkkinoilla toisaalta elämän muotoutuminen lähtömaassa ja nimenomaan siellä tehdyt ura- ja ammatinvalinnat ja niihin liittyvät kokemukset ja elämäntilanteet. Näiden kriteerien pohjalta aineisto jakaantui kolmeen ryhmään, jotka nimettiin pärjääjiksi, harhailijoiksi ja sinnittelijöiksi. Pärjääjien kertomukset muotoutuivat tietyllä tavalla myönteisen kehän kautta: niin lähtömaassa tehdyt ammatinvalinnat kuin työuran muotoutuminen Suomessa tapahtuivat suhteellisen vaivattomasti. Useimmiten työt Suomessa vastasivat lähtömaassa hankittua koulutusta. Omiin uravalintoihin oltiin myöhemmin myös tyytyväisiä. Harhailijoille oman paikan löytyminen oli puolestaan hankalampaa. Leimallista tälle ryhmälle oli tietynlainen valintojen vaikeus sekä tyytymättömyys omiin aikaisemmin tehtyihin ratkaisuihin. Jotkut harmittelivat nuorena tekemiään uravalintoja niin, että päättivät Suomessa hankkia kokonaan uuden ammatin. Muutto Suomeen merkitsi useimmille ammatillisen aseman laskua. Sinnittelijät kertoivat jo lähtökohdiltaan kahteen muuhun ryhmään nähden hyvin erilaista tarinaa. Tämän ryhmän lähes koko elämä lähtömaassa oli sodan ja levottomuuksien sävyttämää. Tämä näkyi myös ammatinvalinnassa: opiskelupaikka oli saatettu valita esimerkiksi sen perusteella, missä oli milloinkin turvallista opiskella. Myös Suomeen muutto erosi kahdesta aikaisemmasta ryhmästä, sillä lähtö entisestä kotimaasta oli tapahtunut usein hyvinkin yllättäen vailla etukäteissuunnittelua tilanteiden kärjistyttyä nopeasti. Suomessa työelämään pääseminen oli kaikille sinnittelijöille vaikeaa ja haastatteluhetkellä useilla vielä hyvin alkutekijöissä. Hyväkään koulutus ei aina takaa maahanmuuttajille työtä uudessa maassa, sillä hankittua tutkintoa ja osaamista ei ole helppo siirtää maasta toiseen. Pahimmassa tapauksessa vieraassa maassa suoritettu korkeakoulututkinto voi kokonaan mitätöityä uudessa maassa ja korkeakoulututkinnon myötä hankittu osaaminen menettää täysin arvonsa. Kyse on niin yksilön kuin yhteiskunnankin resurssien tuhlaamisesta tilanteessa, jossa maassa pysyvästi asuvat koulutetut maahanmuuttajat työskentelevät tavalla tai toisella koulutustaan vastaamattomissa epävakaissa töissä, työmarkkinoiden laitamilla tai ovat kokonaan työmarkkinoiden ulkopuolella.

This study focuses on the relationship between organizational network competence and the internationalization process of small- and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Over recent decades, the global business environment has become increasingly conducive to internationalization of small firms. A central facilitating factor in the process has been the emergence of networked business relationships between internationalizing firms. Research on SME internationalization has found that certain types of structures and dynamics of business networks allow SMEs access to the resources they need to enter foreign markets. This consequently means that their internationalization often becomes to depend on the networks they are embedded in. However, research so far has mostly ignored the possibility that the organizational ability to develop and manage business network relationships, network competence, may be a major underlying factor in determining how well SMEs can leverage their network relationships to enter foreign markets and consequently may determine in large part how successful their internationalization process turns out to be. This study aims to respond to those gaps, by empirically examining how the development of network competence in internationalizing SMEs influences the internationalization outcomes that they can expect, and how such network competence is conceptualized and developed. Using a mixed methods approach, survey data collected from 298 Finnish SMEs across five industry sectors is first used to examine how levels of network competence are related to internationalization propensity of SMEs and their subsequent international performance, growth and profitability as internationally operating firms. In order to illustrate in more detail the ways in which network competence is conceptualized and how it develops during the internationalization process of an SME, qualitative data from internationally operating Finnish SMEs are used. Longitudinal interview data of an internationalizing Finnish SME is accompanied by data gathered through a series of semistructured interviews of Finnish and Russian managers involved in mutual business relationship dyads. Structurally, this thesis examines the research issue as an article-based dissertation, consisting of five journal and conference publications. Three of these publications are based on the quantitative data, and the remaining two apply the qualitative interview data. The results find several aspects where network competence has a positive influence on the success of internationalizing SMEs, how it develops and what it entails conceptually in this context. Quantitatively, the level of network competence is found to have a positive relationship to various internationalization outcomes, including the propensity of SMEs to enter foreign markets and on their subsequent international performance, their growth and their profitability. Additionally, the positive relationship is divided between the relationship-specific and cross-relational dimension of network competence, in that the influence of the former is relevant for the propensity to internationalize, while the latter is for the growth and profitability of the already internationalized SMEs. Qualitatively, the results suggest, firstly, that the development process of network competence does not necessarily precede the start of the internationalization process, but may occur through a gradual learning process alongside it. And secondly, the results also imply that the conceptualization of network competence by Finnish managers of internationally operating Finnish SMEs is structurally distinct from that of their culturally distinct partner managers in Russia. This study contributes to the literature on SME internationalization in several ways. Firstly, it introduces operationalized organizational competencies to the literature on internationalization of SMEs, which has so far mainly examined the influence of business networking on the internationalization process without having such an organizational viewpoint. Furthermore, this study provides a multi-level analysis of the determinants of successful SME internationalization, by examining various strategic and performance outcomes across the process. These results also contribute to the literature on organizational strategy of internationalizing SMEs, by clarifying how different dimensions of business networking may be optimal in different phases of the internationalization process. Conceptually, the results of this study contribute to the literature on competence development and SME internationalization, by illustrating how the development process of network competence may occur during internationalization process. Thus, they also contribute to the discussion on how SMEs are able to influence the dynamics and structures of their business networks over time. Finally, this study contributes to the literature on the role of culture in the internationalization process, by implying that the cultural background of the manager of the SME may determine whether business networking and network competence is seen as an organizational-level or an individual level capability. The study also includes some additional contributions to the literature on dynamic capabilities in strategic management, and on that of strategic business networks. These include further clarifying the exact nature and tangibility of dynamic capabilities, and being one of the first studies to introduce constructs from both dynamic capabilities and business network literature to the field of international entrepreneurship. And finally, the study also has some contribution on the two streams of literature, in illustrating how both dyadic and network-level capabilities may be relevant, depending on the current strategic goals and market position of the firm. This dissertation critically reviews the idea of meritocracy from both a theoretical and an empirical perspective. Based on a discussion of classical texts of social philosophy and sociology, it is argued that meritocracy as a concept for social stratification is best compatible with the sociological tradition of status attainment research: both frame social inequality in primarily individualistic terms, centring on the role of ascribed (e.g., gender, social background) and achieved (e.g., educational qualifications) characteristics for determining individuals’ socioeconomic rewards. This theoretical argument introduces the research problem at the core of this dissertation: to what extent can the individualistic conception of social stratification be maintained empirically? Fields of study and their interaction with educational attainment levels play a prominent role in the analysis of this question. Drawing on sociological versions of segmented labour market theory, it is assumed that fields of study may channel individuals into heterogeneous political-economic contexts on the labour market, which potentially modify the socioeconomic benefit individuals derive from their qualification levels. The focus on fields of study may also highlight economic differentials between men and women that derive from the persisting segregation of men’s and women’s occupational and educational specializations rather than direct gender discrimination on the labour market. The quantitative analyses in this dissertation consist of three research articles, which are based primarily on Finnish data, but occasionally extend the view to other European countries. The data sources include register-based macro- and microdata as well as survey data. Article I examines the extent and the patterns of gender segregation within the Finnish educational system between 1981 and 2005. The results show that differences between men’s and women’s field specializations have for the most part remained stable during this period, with particularly high levels of gender segregation observed at lower educational levels. The focus in Article II rests on the effects of gender-segregated fields of study on higher education graduates’ occupational status. It is shown that fields of study matter for accessing professional jobs and avoiding low-skilled positions in Finland: at the early career stage, particularly polytechnic graduates from female-dominated fields are less likely to work in professional positions. Finnish university graduates from male-dominated fields were more likely than their peers with different specializations to work as professionals, yet they also faced a greater risk of being sorted into lowskilled jobs if they failed to make use of this advantage. Article III proceeded to analyse the joint impact of educational qualification levels and fields of study on young adults’ median earnings in Finland between 1985 and 2005. The results show that qualification levels do not confer a consistent benefit in the process of earnings stratification. Advanced qualifications raise median earnings most clearly among individuals specializing in the same field of study. When comparing individuals with different field specializations, on the other hand, higher-level qualifications do not necessarily lead to higher median earnings. Overall, the findings of this dissertation reveal a heterogeneous effect of education for achieving social positions, which challenges individual-centred, meritocratic accounts of social stratification and underlines the problematic lack of structural and institutional dimensions in the dominant account of social status attainment.
