Catalonia is a bilingual country where the presence of English in the social context is small; the amount of input received by the primary education pupils is very little and this input mainly comes from the English lessons at school. Consequently, this situation combined with the increasing demand for English and the fact that the new generations want to become communicatively competent in English place the role of English teachers in a relevant position. This research project analyses the role of the English teacher talk; in particular, the study focuses on the teacher’s oral productions in foreign language lessons (EFL) and in content-based lessons (CLIL).

OBJECTIVE: Client change talk has been proposed as a mechanism of change in motivational interviewing (MI) by mediating the link between therapist MI-consistent behaviors (MICO) and client behavioral outcomes. We tested under what circumstances this mechanism was supported in the context of a clinical trial of brief MI for heavy drinking among nontreatment seeking young men. METHOD: We conducted psycholinguistic coding of 174 sessions using the MI Skill Code 2.1 and derived the frequency of MICO and the strength of change talk (CTS) averaged over the session. CTS was examined as a mediator of the relationship between MICO and a drinking composite score measured at 3-month follow-up, controlling for the composite measure at baseline. Finally, we tested therapist gender and MI experience as well as client readiness to change and alcohol problem severity as moderators of this mediation model. RESULTS: CTS significantly predicted outcome (higher strength related to less drinking), but MICO did not predict CTS. However, CTS mediated the relationship between MICO and drinking outcomes when therapists had more experience in MI and when clients had more severe alcohol problems (i.e., significant conditional indirect effects). CONCLUSIONS: The mechanism hypothesized by MI theory was operative in our brief MI with heavy drinking young men, but only under particular conditions. Our results suggest that attention should be paid to therapist selection, training, and/or supervision until they reach a certain level of competence, and that MI might not be appropriate for nontreatment seeking clients drinking at a lower level of risk. Background It is well known that the pattern of linkage disequilibrium varies between human populations, with remarkable geographical stratification. Indirect association studies routinely exploit linkage disequilibrium around genes, particularly in isolated populations where it is assumed to be higher. Here, we explore both the amount and the decay of linkage disequilibrium with physical distance along 211 gene regions, most of them related to complex diseases, across 39 HGDP-CEPH population samples, focusing particularly on the populations defined as isolates. Within each gene region and population we use r2 between all possible single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) pairs as a measure of linkage disequilibrium and focus on the proportion of SNP pairs with r2 greater than 0.8. Results Although the average r2 was found to be significantly different both between and within continental regions, a much higher proportion of r2 variance could be attributed to differences between continental regions (2.8% vs. 0.5%, respectively). Similarly, while the proportion of SNP pairs with r2 > 0.8 was significantly different across continents for all distance classes, it was generally much more homogenous within continents, except in the case of Africa and the Americas. The only isolated populations with consistently higher LD in all distance classes with respect to their continent are the Kalash (Central South Asia) and the Surui (America). Moreover, isolated populations showed only slightly higher proportions of SNP pairs with r2 > 0.8 per gene region than non-isolated populations in the same continent. Thus, the number of SNPs in isolated populations that need to be genotyped may be only slightly less than in non-isolates. Conclusion The 'isolated population' label by itself does not guarantee a greater genotyping efficiency in association studies, and properties other than increased linkage disequilibrium may make these populations interesting in genetic epidemiology.

A demonstractive experiment was proposed in order to verify students' habilities in recognizing the presence and nature of ions in solutions, before and after their passage through ion-exchange columns. The students have no previous contact with ion-exchange resins, so they must deduce how they work and explain the experimental facts. The performance of classes, at different stages of learning, is compared and discussed.

The aim of this article is to provide the understanding of the chemical world that underlies everything around us by introducing basic chemical concepts and their everyday applications. The specific topics presented were selected according to their relevance and their ability to be presented as an exhibition. This format is based on the visual effects that help the public to see abstract descriptions in a concrete form. In addition, a soundtrack is used to stimulate the affective intelligence and relax the public. According to the results obtained here, we can conclude that chemical demonstrations, combined with music, help the presentation of scientific topics and motivate and facilitate the "chemistry communication".

Background: Since the use of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines PCV7 and PCV13 in children became widespread, invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) has dramatically decreased. Nevertheless, there has been a rise in incidence of Streptococcus pneumoniae non-vaccine serotypes (NVT) colonising the human nasopharynx. Nasopharyngeal colonisation, an essential step in the development of S. pneumoniae-induced IPD, is associated with biofilm formation. Although the capsule is the main pneumococcal virulence factor, the formation of pneumococcal biofilms might, in fact, be limited by the presence of capsular polysaccharide (CPS). Methodology/Principal Findings: We used clinical isolates of 16 emerging, non-PCV13 serotypes as well as isogenic transformants of the same serotypes. The biofilm formation capacity of isogenic transformants expressing CPSs from NVT was evaluated in vitro to ascertain whether this trait can be used to predict the emergence of NVT. Fourteen out of 16 NVT analysed were not good biofilm formers, presumably because of the presence of CPS. In contrast, serotypes 11A and 35B formed >45% of the biofilm produced by the non-encapsulated M11 strain. Conclusions/Significance This study suggest that emerging, NVT serotypes 11A and 35B deserve a close surveillance.

This is a study about language and learning aspects in the interaction between pupils and teachers in classrooms, where the majority of the pupils are bilingual. The aim of the dissertation is to develop the understanding of interactional learning possibilities and constraints in relation to a bilingual context. Language related learning is used as an overall conception which covers learning related to classroom discourse, language and subject. The empirical study has been made in a Swedish speaking school in a strongly Finnish dominated environment in the south of Finland. In the material, mainly consisting of video recorded lessons in forms one to three, the interaction between the pupils and the teachers is analysed. Building on a social constructionist perspective, where learning is regarded as a social phenomenon, situated and visible in changing participation, sequences where pupils or teachers make the language relevant are emphasised. The sequences are analysed in line with the conversation analytic (CA) approach. A fundamental result is an understanding of a monolingual classroom discourse, jointly constructed by teachers and pupils and visible in the pupils' interactionally problematized code-switching. This means that the pupils are not victims of a top-driven language policy; they are active co-constructors of the monolingual discourse. Through different repair initiations the pupils are doing interactional work in positioning themselves correctly in the monolingual discourse, which they simultaneously maintain. This work has a price in relation to time, knowledge and exactness. The pupils' problematized code-switching is often directly and shortly repaired by the teachers. This kind of repair promotes the pupils' participation and is not, as opposed to the results of research in everyday talk, dispreferred in pupil-teacher talk. When the pupils use the possibility to, in a comparatively easy way, participate and thus express their knowledge through codeswitching, and simultaneously talk a monolingual discourse into being, the teacher can, through direct repair, show an understanding in regard to the content, facilitate language learning and simultaneously confirm the pupils as competent speakers and bilingual individuals. Furthermore, significant results show that the monolingual norm has a function of a contrasting background which gives the pupils and the teachers a possibility to use language alternation as a functional and meaningful activity. The pupils use codeswitching as a way of protesting or expressing non-participation in the classroom talk. By making the pupils' bilingualism relevant, the teachers express understanding and empathy and encourage the pupils' participation in the classroom talk. Bilingualism is a nonpreferred, but functioning, resource in the interaction between pupils and teachers.

Nauhoitteiden käyttöön on saatu asianmukainen lupa kaikilta osapuolilta. Puhelut on litteroitu saksalaisella kielialueella vakiintuneen GAT-litterointisysteemin mukaan. Teoreettis-metodisena kehyksenä on kaksi tutkimusalaa, vuorovaikutuslingvistiikka ja kielten vertailu. Vuorovaikutuslingvistinen tarkastelu keskittyy havaintoihin vuorojen ja puheen sekvenssien rakenteesta. Vuorojen merkitysten tulkinnassa hyödynnetään systemaattisesti prosodian antamia vihjeitä. Tuloksena on yksittäisten lopetusten keskustelunanalyyttinen lähikuvaus, jonka pohjalta määritellään kulloisenkin lopetuksen sekvenssirakenne. Kaikki lopetukset olivat siltä osin yhteneväisiä, että niissä kaikissa havaittiin ainakin aloittava, tulevaan tapaamiseen viittaava sekä lopputervehdyksiin johtava sekvenssi. Sekvenssirakenteen variaatioiden pohjalta aineiston lopetukset voidaan kuitenkin jaotella ryhmiin.

KORT FINSKT REFERAT AV AVHANDLINGEN: Voiko ihminen rakastaa, koska hänellä on siihen hyviä syitä? Voimmeko edes luvata elinikäistä rakkautta? Onko rakkaus ilman ennakkoehtoja vain saavuttamaton ihanne? Tämän rakkauden käsitteellisen tutkimuksen perusajatuksena on, että kysymykset, joita syntyy alkaessamme filosofoida rakkaudesta usein perustuvat väärinkäsityksiin siitä, mistä oikeastaan puhumme, kun puhumme rakkaudesta. Ludwig Wittgensteinin myöhäisfilosofian inspiroimana Kronqvist ehdottaa, että rakkautta koskevien erilaisten keskustelujemme reflektointi voi ratkaista monia näistä sekaannuksista. Tällainen tarkastelu voi myös syventää rakkauden ymmärrystämme. Väitöskirja tarkastelee eri puolilta rakkauden merkitystä elämässämme, vetäen yhteyksiä (1) tunteita (2) identiteettiä ja (3) merkitystä ja moraalia koskeviin filosofisiin keskusteluihin. Voidaan todeta, että monet rakkautta koskevissa tarkasteluissamme esiin nousevat kysymykset ovat luonteeltaan sellaisia, ettei niihin voi antaa jokaista ihmisyksilöä sitovaa, tieteellistä vastausta. Sensijaan ne asettavat meidät moraalisen kysymyksen eteen: minkä aseman olemme valmiita antamaan rakkaudelle ja toisille ihmisille omassa elämässämme?
