We identify a number of meanings of "Open", as part of the motivating rationale for a social media space tuned for learning, called SocialLearn. We discuss why online social learning seems to be emerging so strongly at this point, explore features of social learning, and identify some of the dimensions that we believe characterize the social learning design space, before describing the emerging design concept and implementation.

The Wikiwijs program in the Netherlands is experimenting in structuring a repository with digital learning materials by labelling these materials with the learning goals and subjects handled by it. This makes it possible to create an interdependent arrangement of learning materials as building blocks for a curriculum. Such arrangements are called learning trajectories. A datamodel is presented in which the entities involved and their relationships are depicted. A first implementation of this is realized and published in September 2010.

Recently many OER activities have been getting popular, and users who access those content for informal learning are increasing. Most popular OER must be OCW, which has been proposed and promoted by MIT since 2001. In Japan OCW has been penetrating gradually since 2005. However in terms of formal learning utilization ICT technology has not been so popular yet in Japanese higher education field. The purpose of this paper is to present an approach for students to have non-traditional learning assessed for credit and introduce a tool that facilitates this process. The OCW Backpack system can connect self-learners with KNEXT assessment services to obtain college credit for prior learning. An ex post facto study based on historical data collected over the past two years at Kaplan University (KU) is presented to validate the portfolio assessment process. Cumulative GPA was compared for students who received experiential credit for learning derived from personal or professional experience with a matched sample of students with no experiential learning credits. The study found that students who received experiential credits perform better than the matched sample students on GPA. The findings validate the KU portfolio assessment process. Additionally, the results support the capability of the OCW Backpack to capture the critical information necessary to evaluate non-traditional learning for university credit.

Initiatives to stimulate the development and propagation of open educational resources (OER) need a sufficiently large community that can be mobilized to participate in this endeavour. Failure to achieve this could lead to underuse of OER. In the context of the Wikiwijs initiative a large scale survey was undertaken amongst primary and secondary school teachers to explore possible determinants of the educational use of digital learning materials (DLMs). Basing on the Integrative Model of Behaviour Prediction it was conjectured that self-efficacy, attitude and perceived norm would take a central role in explaining the intention to use DLMs. Several other predictors were added to the model as well whose effects were hypothesized to be mediated by the three central variables.All conjectured relationships were found using path analysis on survey data from 1484 teachers. Intention to DLMs was most strongly determined by self-efficacy, followed by attitude. ICT proficiency was in its turn the strongest predictor of self-efficacy. Perceived norm played only a limited role in the intention to use DLMs. Concluding, it seems paramount for the success of projects such as Wikiwijs to train teachers in the use of digital learning materials and ICT (e.g. the digital blackboard) and to impact on their attitude.

Personalization in e-learning allows the adaptation of contents, learning strategiesand educational resources to the competencies, previous knowledge or preferences of the student. This project takes a multidisciplinary perspective for devising standards-based personalization capabilities into virtual e-learning environments, focusing on the conceptof adaptive learning itinerary, using reusable learning objects as the basis of the system and using ontologies and semantic web technologies.

Les autores i autors d'aquest llibre ofereixen una descripció de l'evolució general de l'e-learning apuntant els elements clau cap als que ha d'anar evolucionant. Parteixen de l'experiència i la pràctica contrastada amb les investigacions sobre el tema. Al llarg dels diferents capítols ens mostren com viu un estudiant virtual, el seu paper i la manera com planteja i organitza les seves activitats; ens acosten al professorat analitzant el seu rol en el disseny de la formació i la comunicació amb els estudiants; parlen de la col·laboració, analitzant com dissenyar activitats col·laboratives i assenyalant els seus avantatges i límits; descriuen els diferents recursos d'aprenentatge que podem disposar en el disseny dels cursos i, finalment, acompanyen la nostra mirada cap al futur pròxim analitzant les tendències i els reptes als que hem de fer front per construir l'e-learning del segle XXI.

This article discusses the lessons learned from developing and delivering the Vocational Management Training for the European Tourism Industry (VocMat) online training programme, which was aimed at providing flexible, online distance learning for the European tourism industry. The programme was designed to address managers ‘need for flexible, senior management level training which they could access at a time and place which fitted in with their working and non-work commitments. The authors present two main approaches to using the Virtual Learning Environment, the feedback from the participants, and the implications of online Technology in extending tourism training opportunities

In This work we present a Web-based tool developed with the aim of reinforcing teaching and learning of introductory programming courses. This tool provides support for teaching and learning. From the teacher's perspective the system introduces important gains with respect to the classical teaching methodology. It reinforces lecture and laboratory sessions, makes it possible to give personalized attention to the student, assesses the degree of participation of the students and most importantly, performs a continuous assessment of the student's progress. From the student's perspective it provides a learning framework, consisting in a help environment and a correction environment, which facilitates their personal work. With this tool students are more motivated to do programming

This work shows the use of adaptation techniques involved in an e-learning system that considers students' learning styles and students' knowledge states. The mentioned e-learning system is built on a multiagent framework designed to examine opportunities to improve the teaching and to motivate the students to learn what they want in a user-friendly and assisted environment

BACKGROUND: The Internet is increasingly used as a source of information for mental health issues. The burden of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) may lead persons with diagnosed or undiagnosed OCD, and their relatives, to search for good quality information on the Web. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of Web-based information on English-language sites dealing with OCD and to compare the quality of websites found through a general and a medically specialized search engine. METHODS: Keywords related to OCD were entered into Google and OmniMedicalSearch. Websites were assessed on the basis of accountability, interactivity, readability, and content quality. The "Health on the Net" (HON) quality label and the Brief DISCERN scale score were used as possible content quality indicators. Of the 235 links identified, 53 websites were analyzed. RESULTS: The content quality of the OCD websites examined was relatively good. The use of a specialized search engine did not offer an advantage in finding websites with better content quality. A score ≥16 on the Brief DISCERN scale is associated with better content quality. CONCLUSION: This study shows the acceptability of the content quality of OCD websites. There is no advantage in searching for information with a specialized search engine rather than a general one. Practical implications: The Internet offers a number of high quality OCD websites. It remains critical, however, to have a provider-patient talk about the information found on the Web.

Hintergrund: Trotz ihrer Etablierung als essentieller Bestandteil der medizinischen Weiter-/Fortbildung werden europa- wie schweizweit kaum Kurse in evidenzbasierter Medizin (ebm) angeboten, die - integriert im klinischen Alltag - gezielt Fertigkeiten in ebm vermitteln. Noch grössere Defizite finden sich bei ebm- Weiterbildungsmöglichkeiten für klinische Ausbilder (z.B. Oberärzte). Als Weiterführung eines EU-finanzierten, klinisch integrierten E-learning- Programms für Weiterbildungsassistenten (www.ebm-unity.org) entwickelte eine europäische Gruppe von medical educators gezielt für Ausbilder ein e-learning-Curriculum zur Vermittlung von ebm im Rahmen der klinischen Weiterbildung. Methode: Die Entwicklung des Curriculums umfasst folgende Schritte: Beschreibung von Lernzielen, Identifikation von klinisch relevanten Lernumgebungen, Entwicklung von Lerninhalten und exemplarischen didaktischen Strategien, zugeschnitten auf die jeweilige Lernumgebungen, Design von web-basierten Selbst-Lernsequenzen mit Möglichkeiten zur Selbstevaluation, Erstellung eines Handbuchs. Ergebnisse: Lernziele des Tutoren-Lehrgangs sind der Erwerb von Fertigkeiten zur Vermittlung der 5 klassischen ebm-Schritte: PICO- (Patient-Intervention-Comparison-Outcome)-Fragen, Literatursuche, kritische Literaturbewertung, Übertragung der Ergebnisse im eigenen Setting und Implementierung). Die Lehrbeispiele zeigen angehenden ebm-Tutoren, wie sich typische klinische Situationen wie z.B. Stationsvisite, Ambulanzsprechstunde, Journalclub, offizielle Konferenzen, Audit oder das klinische Assessment von Weiterbildungsassistenten gezielt für die Vermittlung von ebm nutzen lassen. Kurze E-Learning-Module mit exemplarischen «real-life»-Video-Clips erlauben flexibles Lernen zugeschnitten auf das knappe Zeitkontingent von Ärzten. Eine Selbst-Evaluation ermöglicht die Überprüfung der gelernten Inhalte. Die Pilotierung des Tutoren-Lehrgangs mit klinisch tätigen Tutoren sowie die Übersetzung des Moduls in weitere Sprachen sind derzeit in Vorbereitung. chlussfolgerung: Der modulare Train-the-Trainer-Kurs zur Vermittlung von ebm im klinischen Alltag schliesst eine wichtige Lücke in der Dissemination von klinischer ebm. Webbasierte Beispiele mit kurzen Sequenzen demonstrieren typische Situationen zur Vermittlung der ebm-Kernfertigkeiten und bieten medical educators wie Oberärzten einen niedrigschwelligen Einstieg in «ebm» am Krankenbett. Langfristiges Ziel ist eine europäische Qualifikation für ebm- Learning und -Teaching in der Fort- und Weiterbildung. Nach Abschluss der Evaluation steht das Curriculum interessierten Personen und Gruppen unter «not-for-profit»-Bedingungen zur Verfügung. Auskünfte erhältlich von rkunz@uhbs.ch. The explosive growth of Internet during the last years has been reflected in the ever-increasing amount of the diversity and heterogeneity of user preferences, types and features of devices and access networks. Usually the heterogeneity in the context of the users which request Web contents is not taken into account by the servers that deliver them implying that these contents will not always suit their needs. In the particular case of e-learning platforms this issue is especially critical due to the fact that it puts at stake the knowledge acquired by their users. In the following paper we present a system that aims to provide the dotLRN e-learning platform with the capability to adapt to its users context. By integrating dotLRN with a multi-agent hypermedia system, online courses being undertaken by students as well as their learning environment are adapted in real time
