The effect of La2O3 addition on the densification and electrical properties of the (0.9895 - x) SnO2 + 0.01 CoO + 0.0005 Nb2O5 + x La2O5 system, where x = 0.0005 or 0.00075, was considered in this study. The samples were sintered at 1300 degreesC for 2 and 4 h and a single SnO2 phase was identified by X-ray diffraction. Microstructure analysis by scanning electron microscopy showed that the affect of La2O3 addition is to decrease the SnO2 grain size. J versus E curves indicated that the system exhibits a varistor behavior and the effect of La2O3 is to increase both the non-linear coefficient (alpha) and the breakdown voltage (E-2). Considering the Schottky thermionic emission model the potential height and the width were estimated. The addition of small amounts of La2O3 to the basic system increases the potential barrier height and decreases both grain size and potential barrier width. (C) 2001 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

SnO2 varistors doped with CoO, Cr2O3 and Nb2O5 were prepared by evaporation and decomposition of suspensions. The composition of the varistors was optimized to improve electrical properties, such as nonlinearity, leakage current and electrical stability. The best results were achieved with the following composition: 99.15% SnO2 +0.75% CoO+0.05% Cr2O3 +0.05% Nb2O5. Samples showed high density, reaching 99.5% of the theoretical density, as well as an homogeneous microstructure. The nonlinear coefficient was higher than 30 in the current range from 10(-7) to 10(-2) A/cm(2). The leakage current was 0.86 mu A/cm(2). These samples showed high stability of electrical parameters when they were exposed to high current of 27 mA/cm(2) for different time periods up to 30 min. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. The influence of yttrium oxide, Y2O3, on the microstructure development of the SnO(2)center dot Co(3)O(4)center dot Nb2O5 typical varistor system was studied with scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopies. The different phases present in the studied samples were characterized through XRD, EDS and selected area diffraction patterns (SAD). Particles of Co2SnO4 were observed with TEM in every sample, whereas clusters of the pyrochlore phase T2Sn2O7 were observed with SEM in samples with 0.05, 0.10 and 0.25 mol% of Y2O3. The higher non-linearity (a = 16) was achieved with the addition of 0.05 mol% of Y2O3. The influence of the secondary phases on the electrical properties is also addressed in this work. The influence of aluminium on the development of the microstructure and on the electrical behaviour of the SnO2 center dot Co3O4 center dot Nb2O5 typical varistor system was studied. Two sources of Al were used, alumina (Al2O3) and boehmite (AlO(OH)). The microstructural features were characterised with scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopies. The different phases present in the studied samples were also studied with XRD, EDS and electron diffraction patterns of selected areas (SAED). Particles containing Sri, Co, Al, and O were unveiled with TEM. Impedance spectroscopy measurements and current density versus electric field characteristics revealed superior electrical properties for samples with AlO(OH). The higher non-linearity (alpha = 19) was achieved with the addition of 0.1% mol of boehmite. The influence of the secondary phases on the electrical properties is also addressed in this work.

The electrical properties of tin oxide varistors doped with CoO, Nb2O5 and Cr2O3, were investigated using the impedance spectroscopy technique with the temperature ranging from 25 to 400 degrees C. The impedance data, represented by means of Nyquist diagrams, show two time constants with different activation energies, one at low frequencies and the other at high frequencies. These activation energies were associated with the adsorption and reaction of O-2 species at the grain boundary interface. The Arrhenius plots show two slopes with a turnover at 200 degrees C for both the higher and lower frequency time constants. This behavior can be related with the decrease of minor charge carrier density. The barrier formation mechanism was associated with the presence of Cr-Sn at the surface, which promotes the adsorption of the O' and O species which are in turn proposed as being responsible for the barrier formation. Variations on the microstructure development and on the electrical properties of SnO2-based varistors are discussed on the basis of the oxygen vacancies created or annihilated by the presence of different additives. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis of sintered samples evidenced a substantial increase in the paramagnetic oxygen vacancies concentration when Nb2O5 is added to the SnO2 center dot Co3O4 system. on the other hand, the observed diminution in the concentration of such species after the addition of Fe2O3 indicates solid solution formation. The quantification of paramagnetic oxygen vacancies allowed to confirm the proposed substitutions taking place in the lattice during sintering. These findings are supported by scanning electron microscopy, by density measurements and by current density versus electric field curves. The characterization of secondary phases through EDS assisted SEM and TEM is also reported in this work.

The non-ohmic properties of the 98.90% SnO2+(1-x)%CoO+0.05% Cr2O3+0.05% Nb2O5+x% MnO2 varistor system (all of them in mol %), as well as the influence of the oxidizing and reducing atmosphere on this system were studied in this work. Experimental evidence indicates that the electrical properties of the varistor depend on the defects that occur at the grain boundary and on the adsorbed oxygen species such as O''(2), O'(2), O in this region. Thermal treatments at 900 degreesC in oxygen and nitrogen atmospheres indicated such a dependence with the values of the non-linearity coefficient (alpha) increasing under oxygen atmosphere, being reduced in nitrogen atmosphere and restored after a new treatment in oxygen atmosphere, presenting a reversibility in the process. EDS analysis accomplished by SEM showed the distribution of the oxides in the varistor matrix. (C) 2002 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

In this work, the effect of Nb2O5 addition on the microstructure of BaTiO3 was studied. From XRD diagrams, a diminution in tetragonality parameters with an increase in dopant concentration was observed. In order to determine morphology and composition of secondary phases in niobium-doped barium titanate, EDAX and SEM analyses were carried out. It was found that a concentration of dopant higher than 0.15 mol% leads to fine-grained BaTiO3 without abnormal grain growth. Otherwise, compositions of secondary phases correspond to the titanium-rich region in the BaO-TiO2 phase diagram. Besides, the titanium content in the precipitate increases with the Nb2O5 addition. Diode-pumped Yb-doped glass lasers have received considerable attention for applications such as high-power beam production or femtosecond pulses generation. In this paper, we evaluate the laser potential of three different glass families doped with Yb3+ : alkali lead fluorborate (PbO-PbF2-B2O3), heavy metal oxide (Bi2O3-PbO-Ga2O3) and niobium tellurite (TeO2-Nb2O5-K2O-Li2O). Spectroscopic properties were studied for the samples and calculations of the minimum laser pump intensity (I-min), saturation fluence (U-sat) and the theoretical limit of peak power (P-max) are also presented. A comparison of laser properties of these three different glasses and their importance is shown and analyzed. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Nanosized and highly reactive magnesium mobate (MgNb2O6) powders were successfully synthesized by a new wet-chemical method by means of the dissolution of Nb2O5 center dot 5H(2)O and in a solution of oxalic acid followed by the addition of stoichiometric amounts of magnesium carbonate. The Nb-Mg-oxalic acid solution was evaporated resulting in a dry and amorphous powder that was calcined in the temperature range from 200 to 900 degrees C for 2 h. The crystallization process from the amorphous state to the crystalline MgNb2O6 was followed by thermal analysis. The calcined powders characterized by FT-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and their morphology examined by high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM). Pure MgNb2O6, free from the second phases and obtained at 800 degrees C was confirmed by a combined analysis using XRD and FT-Raman. The average diameter of the particles was calculated from the HR-SEM image as 70 urn approximately. This technique allows a better mixing of the constituent elements and thus a better reactivity of the mixture to obtain pre-reaction products with high purity at lower temperatures and reducing cost. It can offer a great advantage in the PMN-PT formation with respect to the solid-state synthesis. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

The non-ohmic properties of the 98.95% SnO2 + 1.0 CoO + 0.05 Nb2O5 (all in mole%) system, as well as the influence of sintering temperature and atmosphere on these properties, were characterized in this study. The maximum non-linear coefficient (alpha = 32) was obtained for a sintering temperature of 1300 degrees C in an oxygen atmosphere and this maximum is associated with the presence of O in SnO2 grain boundaries, as interface defects. Experimental results also indicate thermionic-type conduction mechanisms, which are associated with the potential barrier of Schottky or Poole-Frenkel types.

High non-linear J x E electrical characteristic (alpha=41) were obtained in the Nb2O5 and Cr2O3 doped CoO highly densified SnO2 ceramics. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that these ceramics are apparently single phase. Electrical properties and microstructure are highly dependent on the Cr2O3 concentration and on the sintering temperature. Excess of Cr2O3 leads to porous ceramics destroying the material's electrical characteristics probably due to precipitation of second phase of CoCr2O4 Dopant segregation and/or solid solution formation at the grain boundaries can be responsible for the formation of the electrical barriers which originate the varistor behaviour. Alkali niobium tellurite glasses have been prepared and some of their properties measured by differential scanning calorimetry and Raman scattering. The vitreous domain was established in the pseudo ternary phases diagram for the system TeO2-Nb2O5-(0.5K(2)O-0.5Li(2)O). Raman scattering shows that for samples in the TeO2 rich part of the phase diagram the vitreous structure is composed essentially of (TeO4) units connected by the vertices, as in the alpha-TeO2 crystal. The addition of alkali and niobium oxides causes depolymerization to occur with structures composed essentially of (TeO3) and (NbO6) units. Samples with the composition (mol%) 80TeO(2)-10Nb(2)O(5)-5K(2)O-5Li(2)O, stable against crystallization, were prepared containing up to 10% mol Nd3+. The addition of this oxide increases the rigidity of the vitreous network shifting characteristic temperatures to higher temperatures. For the 10% Nd3+ sample amorphous phase separation is assumed to exist from the observation of two glass transition temperatures. Spectroscopic properties such as Judd-Ofelt Omega(lambda) intensity parameters, radiative emission probabilities, and induced emission cross sections were calculated. From these results and also from the emission quenching observed as a function of Nd3+ concentration, we suggest that these glasses could be utilized in optical amplifying devices. The controlled growth of SnO2 nanoparticles for gas sensor applications is reported by these authors. Nb2O5 additive is used to control nucleation and growth of the SnO2 (see Figure), which is synthesized by the polymeric precursor method. Preliminary gas sensing measurements are performed and it is demonstrated that the response time of the Nb2O5-doped SnO2 is faster than that of the undoped material.

Glass ionomer cements (GICs) are largely employed in Dentistry for several applications, such as luting cements for the attachment of crowns, bridges, and orthodontic brackets as well as restorative materials. The development of new glass systems is very important in Dentistry to improve of the mechanical properties and chemical stability. The aim of this study is the preparation of two glass systems containing niobium in their compositions for use as GICs. Glass systems based on the composition SiO2,Al2O3-Nb2O5-CaO were prepared by chemical route at 700degreesC. The XRD and DTA results confirmed that the prepared materials are glasses. The structures of the obtained glasses were compared to commercial material using FTIR, Al-27 and Si-29 MAS-NMR. The analysis of FTIR and MAS-NMR spectra indicated that the systems developed and commercial material are formed by SiO4 and AlO4 linked tetrahedra. These structures are essential to get the set time control and to have cements. These results encourage further applications of the experimental glasses in the formation of GICs.
