This paper presents results on the preparation of microcapsules containing liquid organosilica, and their co-deposition with copper in an acidic copper electrolyte onto a carbon steel cathode to form a copper/microcapsule composite coating. Microscopic analyses of the surface and the cross-section of the coating confirm the incorporation of the liquid-containing microcapsules in the coating layer. The influence of microcapsules in the electrolyte on the cathode polarization, as well as that of process conditions on the microcapsule inclusion, is also discussed. The phase equilibria in the Al-Fe-Zn-O system in the range 1250 °C to 1695 °C in air have been experimentally studied using equilibration and quenching techniques followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The phase diagram of the binary Al2O3-ZnO system and isothermal sections of the Al2O3-“Fe2O3”-ZnO system at 1250 °C, 1400 °C, and 1550 °C have been constructed and reported for the first time. The extents of solid solutions in the corundum (Al,Fe)2O3, hematite (Fe,Al)2O3, Al2O3*Fe2O3 phase (Al,Fe)2O3, spinel (Al,Fe,Zn)O4, and zincite (Al,Zn,Fe)O primary phase fields have been measured. Corundum, hematite, and Al2O3*Fe2O3 phases dissolve less than 1 mol pct zinc oxide. The limiting compositions of Al2O3*Fe2O3 phase measured in this study at 1400 °C are slightly nonstoichiometric, containing more Al2O3 then previously reported. Spinel forms an extensive solid solution in the Al2O3-“Fe2O3”-ZnO system in air with increasing temperature. Zincite was found to dissolve up to 7 mole pct of aluminum in the presence of iron at 1550 °C in air. A meta-stable Al2O3-rich phase of the approximate composition Al8FeZnO14+x was observed at all of the conditions investigated. Aluminum dissolved in the zincite in the presence of iron appears to suppress the transformation from a round to platelike morphology.

High purity Mg-Al type alloys have a naturally fine grain size compared to commercial purity alloys with the same basic composition. This is referred to as native grain refinement. It is shown that native grain refinement occurs only in magnesium alloys containing aluminium. The mechanism is attributed to the Al4C3 particles existing in these alloys. The phase equilibria and liquidus temperatures in the binary SiO2-ZnO system and in the ternary Al2O3-SiO2-ZnO system at low Al2O3 concentrations have been experimentally determined using the equilibration and quenching technique followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. In the SiO2-ZnO system, two binary eutectics involving the congruently melting willemite (Zn2SiO4) were found at 1448 +/- 5 degrees C and 0.52 +/- 0.01 mole fraction ZnO and at 1502 +/- 5 degrees C and 0.71 +/- 0.01 mole fraction ZnO, respectively. The two ternary eutectics involving willemite previously reported in the Al2O3SiO2-ZnO system were found to be at 1315 +/- 5 degrees C and 1425 +/- 25 T, respectively. The compositions of the eutectics are 0.07, 0.52, and 0.41 and 0.05, 0.28, and 0.67 mole fraction Al2O3, SiO2, and ZnO, respectively. The results of the present investigation are significantly different from the results of previous studies.

The phase equilibria in the FeO-Fe2O3-ZnO system have been experimentally investigated at oxygen partial pressures between metallic iron saturation and air using a specially developed quenching technique, followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) and then wet chemistry for determination of ferrous and ferric iron concentrations. Gas mixtures of H-2, N-2, and CO2 or CO and CO2 controlled the atmosphere in the furnace. The determined metal cation ratios in phases at equilibrium were used for the construction of the 1200 degrees C isothermal section of the Fe-Zn-O system. The univariant equilibria between the gas phase, spinel, wustite, and zincite was found to be close to pO(2) = 1 center dot 10(-8) atm at 1200 degrees C. The ferric and ferrous iron concentrations in zincite and spinel at equilibrium were also determined at temperatures from 1200 degrees C to 1400 degrees C at pO(2) = 1 center dot 10(-6) atm and at 1200 degrees C at pO(2) values ranging from 1 center dot 10(-4) to 1 center dot 10(-8) atm. Implications of the phase equilibria in the Fe-Zn-O system for the formation of the platelike zincite, especially important for the Imperial Smelting Process (ISP), are discussed.

To be able to determine the grain size obtained from the addition of a grain refining master alloy, the relationship between grain size (d), solute content (defined by the growth restriction factor Q), and the potency and number density of nucleant particles needs to be understood. A study was undertaken on aluminium alloys where additions of TiB2 and Ti were made to eight wrought aluminum alloys covering a range of alloying elements and compositions. It was found from analysis of the data that d = a/(3)root pct TiB2 + b/Q. From consideration of the experimental data and from further analysis of previously published data, it is shown that the coefficients a and b relate to characteristics of the nucleant particles added by a grain refiner. The term a is related to the maximum density of active TiB2 nucleant particles within the melt, while b is related to their potency. By using the analysis methodology presented in this article, the performance characteristics of different master alloys were defined and the effects of Zr and Si on the poisoning of grain refinement were illustrated.

Detailed microscopic examination using optical and electron microscopes suggests that Al4C3, often observed in the central regions of magnesium grains on polished sections, is a potent substrate for primary Mg. Calculations of the crystallographic relationships between magnesium and Al4C3 further support the experimental observations. (c) 2005 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. High pressure die casting is the most important production method for casting magnesium alloy components, and uniformity of appearance is an important criterion for acceptance of a component by customers. This paper investigates the influence of uniformity in surface appearance of diecast AZ91D plates on their corrosion behaviour. Through immersion, hydrogen collection and weight loss measurements it was found that corrosion is more likely to occur on the areas of the plate that appear to be darker, leading to a non-uniformly corroded surface. Microstructural analysis showed that the non-uniformity in appearance is related to a difference in the morphology and distribution of porosity across the surface of a diecast AZ91D plate. The darker areas of the surface are high in porosity which breaks the continuity of the beta-phase network and provides shortcut paths for corrosion from the surface to the interior of the casting. The brighter shiny areas of the surface are much less porous, with isolated pores being confined by corrosion resistant beta-precipitates thus reducing the corrosion rate.

The effect of the beta phase in Mg-Al alloys on the corrosion performance of an anodised coating was studied. It was found that the corrosion resistance of the anodised coating was closely associated with the corrosion performance of the substrate alloy. In particular, Mg alloys with a dual phase microstructure of alpha + beta with intermediate aluminium contents (namely 5%, 10% and 22% Al) after anodisation had the highest corrosion rate and the worst corrosion resistance provide by the anodised coating. The poor performance of an anodised coating was attributed partly to lower corrosion resistance of the substrate alloy and partly to the higher porosity of the anodised coating. The as-cast three-dimensional morphologies of alpha-Al-15(Fe,Mn)(3)Si-2 and beta-Al5FeSi intermetallics were investigated by serial sectioning. Large beta-Al5FeSi intermetallics were observed to grow around pre-existing dendrite arms. The alpha-Al-15(Fe,Mn)(3)Si-2 intermetallic particle was observed to have a central polyhedral particle and an external highly convoluted three-dimensional structure. (c) 2005 Acta Materialia Inc. The galvanic corrosion of magnesium alloy AZ91D coupled to a steel fastener was studied using a boundary element method (BEM) model and experimental measurements. The BEM model used the measured polarization curves as boundary conditions. The experimental program involved measuring the total corrosion rate as a function of distance from the interface of the magnesium in the form of a sheet containing a mild steel circular insert (5 to 30 mm in diameter). The measured total corrosion rate was interpreted as due to galvanic corrosion plus self corrosion. For a typical case, the self corrosion was estimated typically to be similar to 230 mm/y for an area surrounding the interface and to a distance of about I cm from the interface. Scanning Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (SKPFM) revealed microgalvanic cells with potential differences of approximately 100 mV across the AZ91D surface. These microgalvanic cells may influence the relative contributions of galvanic and self corrosion to the total corrosion of AZ91D.

A transpassivation model was proposed for Fe–Cr–Ni stainless steels. In this model, the important steps and processes involved in transpassivation were illustrated. With some reasonable assumptions, transpassivation behaviours were predicted, such as the changes in film composition, film thickness, anodic current density and AC impedance spectrum in transpassive and secondary passive regions. It was demonstrated that these theoretical predictions were in good agreement with experimentally observed transpassivity of Fe–Cr–Ni stainless steels.
