Age-related changes in the functional neuroanatomy of overt speech production

Alterations of existing neural networks during healthy aging, resulting in behavioral deficits and changes in brain activity, have been described for cognitive, motor, and sensory functions. To investigate age-related changes in the neural circuitry underlying overt non-lexical speech production, functional MRI was performed in 14 healthy younger (21–32 years) and 14 healthy older individuals (62–84 years). The experimental task involved the acoustically cued overt production of the vowel /a/ and the polysyllabic utterance /pataka/. In younger and older individuals, overt speech production was associated with the activation of a widespread articulo-phonological network, including the primary motor cortex, the supplementary motor area, the cingulate motor areas, and the posterior superior temporal cortex, similar in the /a/ and /pataka/ condition. An analysis of variance with the factors age and condition revealed a significant main effect of age. Irrespective of the experimental condition, significantly greater activation was found in the bilateral posterior superior temporal cortex, the posterior temporal plane, and the transverse temporal gyri in younger compared to older individuals. Significantly greater activation was found in the bilateral middle temporal gyri, medial frontal gyri, middle frontal gyri, and inferior frontal gyri in older vs. younger individuals. The analysis of variance did not reveal a significant main effect of condition and no significant interaction of age and condition. These results suggest a complex reorganization of neural networks dedicated to the production of speech during healthy aging.

Joint compensation of multiple RF impairments in MIMO STBC systems

In this paper, we propose a compensation method for the joint effect of high-power amplifier (HPA) nonlinearity, in-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q) imbalance and crosstalk in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) systems. The performance of the MIMO OSTBC equipped with the proposed compensation mechanism is evaluated in terms of average symbol error probability and system capacity, in Rayleigh fading channels. Numerical results are provided and show the effects on performance of several system parameters, namely, the HPA parameters, image-leakage ratio, crosstalk, numbers of antennas, and phase-shift keying modulation order.

Analysis of total visual and CCD V-broadband observations of Comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp): 1995-2001

We developed a general method for determination of water production rates from groundbased visual observations and applied it to Comet Hale-Bopp. Our main objective is to extend the method to include total visual magnitude observations obtained with CCD detector and V filter in the analysis of total visual magnitudes. We compare the CCD V-broadband careful observations of Liller [Liller, W. Pre-perihelion CCD photometry of Comet 1995 01 (Hale-Bopp). Planet. Space Sci. 45, 1505-1513, 1997; Liller, W. CCD photometry of Comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp): 1995-2000. Int. Comet Quart. 23(3), 93-97, 2001] with the total visual magnitude observations from experienced international observers found in the International Comet Quarterly (ICQ) archive. A data set of similar to 400 CCD observations covering about the same 6 years time span of the similar to 12,000 ICQ selected total visual magnitude observations were used in the analysis. A least-square method applied to the water production rates, yields power laws as a function of the heliocentric distances for the pre- and post-perihelion phases. The average dimension of the nucleus as well as its effective active area is determined and compared with values published in the literature. (C) 2009 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Expression and characterization of LTx2, a neurotoxin from Lasiodora sp effecting on calcium channels

Here, we described the expression and characterization of the recombinant toxin LTx2, which was previously isolated from the venomous cDNA library of a Brazilian spider, Lasiodora sp. (Mygalomorphae, Theraphosidae). The recombinant toxin found in the soluble and insoluble fractions was purified by reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Ca2+ imaging analysis revealed that the recombinant LTx2 acts on calcium channels of BC3H1 cells, blocking L-type calcium channels. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

ASSOCIATED A-TYPE SUBALKALINE AND HIGH-K CALC-ALKALINE GRANITES IN THE ITU GRANITE PROVINCE, SOUTHEASTERN BRAZIL: PETROLOGICAL AND TECTONIC SIGNIFICANCE

The 590-580 Ma Itu Granite Province (IGP) is a roughly linear belt of post-orogenic granite plutons similar to 60 km wide extending for some 350 km along the southern edge of the Apia-Guaxupe Terrane in southeastern Brazil. Typical components are subalkaline A-type granites (some with rapakivi texture) that crystallized at varied, but mostly strongly oxidizing conditions, and contrast with a coeval association of also oxidized high-K calc-alkaline granites in terms of major (e. g., lower Ca/Fe) and trace elements (higher Nb, Y, Zr). Mantle-derived magmas (such as those forming the LILE-rich Piracaia Monzodiorite, with epsilon(Nd(t)) = -7 to -10, (87)Sr/(86)Sr((t)) = 0.7045-0.7055) are inferred to derive from enriched subcontinental lithosphere modified during previous subduction, and may have played a role in the generation of the A-type granites, adding melts or fluids or both to the lower crust from which the latter were generated. The IGP is interpreted as a reflection of crust uplift and increased heat flux during ascent of hot, less dense asthenosphere after continental collision, probably reflecting breakoff of an oceanic slab coeval to the right-lateral accretion of a terrane related to the Mantiqueira Orogenic System.

Geochemistry of natural chromium occurrence in a sandstone aquifer in Bauru Basin, Sao Paulo State, Brazil

Anomalous concentrations of Cr(VI) occur in groundwaters of the Adamantina Aquifer, in a large region in the western state of Sao Paulo, sometimes exceeding the potability limit (0.05 mg L(-1)). To identify the possible geochemical reactions responsible for the occurrence of Cr in groundwater in Urania, borehole rock samples were collected in order to carry out mineralogical and chemical analyses. In addition, multilevel monitoring wells were installed and groundwater samples were analyzed. Analyses of the borehole rock samples show the occurrence of a geochemical anomaly of Cr in the quartzose sandstones (average concentrations of 221 ppm). Chrome-diopside is one of the main minerals contributing to this anomaly, having an average Cr content of 1505 ppm. Sequential extraction experiments indicated weakly adsorbed Cr in the order of 0.54 ppm, and this quantity is enough to provide the Cr concentrations observed in groundwater. Groundwaters from the monitoring wells proved to be stratified, with the highest concentrations of Cr(VI) (0.13 mg L(-1)) being associated with high redox and pH values (over 10) and high concentrations of Na. Geochemical reactions that may explain the release of Cr from the solid phase to groundwater involve the release of Cr(III) from minerals (like chrome-diopside and Cr-Fe hydroxide), followed by oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI), probably related to the reduction of Mn oxides present in the aquifer. Then cation exchange occurs and dissolution of carbonates which increases the pH of groundwater, resulting in the desorption and mobilization of Cr(VI) into groundwater. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. A articulação entre comunicação e estratégias nas organizações : estudo de caso da Gerasul/Tractebel Energia

O presente trabalho aborda a articulação entre comunicação e estratégias nas organizações, através de um estudo de caso da Gerasul/Tractebel Energia, empresa que atua no setor elétrico brasileiro. Orientado segundo uma abordagem qualitativa, este trabalho utiliza o referencial teórico sobre comunicação organizacional (KATZ e KAHN, 1978 e GOLDHABER, 1991) e sobre estratégias, enfocando principalmente as contribuições da Escola do Posicionamento e da Escola do Aprendizado, de acordo com a categorização de escolas de estratégias proposta por Mintzberg et al. (2000). A análise da empresa estudada revelou que a articulação eficiente entre comunicação e estratégias constitui um importante meio para se atingir os resultados pretendidos pela empresa. Isso porque a comunicação, além do papel de dinamizar o fluxo de informações, exerce a função de integrar os membros da empresa, bem como de promover as mudanças culturais desejadas e de construir uma imagem organizacional (NEVES, 2000) adequada aos negócios da companhia. O estudo revelou, também, que apesar de a articulação entre comunicação e estratégias ser percebida como fundamental pelos pesquisados, ela precisa ser incrementada na prática, a fim de potencializar os resultados da organização.

Racial discrimination in Brazil: interviews with leaders of the black movement

Racism in Brazil has some specificities when compared to other countries, for, differently from, for instance, South Africa and the United States, Brazilian Constitutions, ever since the Independence (1822), have never distinguished the citizens according to race or color. Furthermore, since the mid-1900s, Afro-Brazilian cultural manifestations, such as, for example, samba and capoeira, started to be valued as a part of our “national identity”. These specificities make race relations in Brazilian society a much more complex issue. This paper is focused on selected parts of interviews that deal with the nature of racial discrimination in Brazil, extracted from interviews with leaders of the black movement produced within the scope of the project “The History of Black Movement in Brazil: organization of a collection of Oral History Interviews”, developed by CPDOC, Getulio Vargas Foundation (Rio de Janeiro). These “histories within history”, as told by our interviewees, may be transformed into images that will be able to condense a given reality, thus allowing us to evaluate the gains obtained by oral history methodology.

Seletividade de trifluralin incorporado ao solo para batata-doce

No Estado de São Paulo, a batata-doce é cultivada em escala comercial como produto hortigranjeiro. em vista das dificuldades para o controle manual e o mecanizado das plantas infestantes da cultura, há grande interesse pelo método químico desse controle. Com essa finalidade, tanto pelo baixo custo relativo como pelas facilidades técnicas de utilização, o trifluralin desperta a atenção dos agricultores. Para avaliar a seletividade do herbicida para essa cultura, foi realizado um experimento em vasos, com doses crescentes do produto, nas seguintes concentrações: 0,00; 0,11; 0,22; 0,44; 0,88; 1,76 e 3,52 mg.kg-1 de i.a. em peso. Os resultados mostraram que, a partir da dose de 0,22 mg.kg-1 de i.a., o trifluralin interferiu negativamente e em escala exponencial sobre os parâmetros: comprimento das ramas, número de folhas, peso da massa seca da parte aérea e das raízes, avaliados aos 30 dias, revelando-se não seletivo para a batata-doce quando incorporado ao solo, em profundidades semelhantes às da zona de enraizamento das plantas.

Use of scanning electron microscopy for the evaluation of intestinal epithelium integrity

Propõe-se, neste trabalho, o uso de microscopia eletrônica de varredura para avaliar perda de epitélio intestinal da mucosa intestinal de pintos machos e fêmeas submetidos a prolongado jejum pós-eclosão de água e ração. Dois segmentos do duodeno, jejuno e íleo por ave foram coletados e processados pelo método de rotina para microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Seis diferentes graus de perda de epitélio intestinal foram determinados: grau 0, vilos normais, sem extrusão; grau 1, vilos com pequenos pontos de extrusão; grau 2, vilos com perda de epitélio no ápice; grau 3, vilos com perda de epitélio na região apical; grau 4, vilos com perda de epitélio em sua metade superior; grau 5: vilos sem epitélio; grau 6: vilo quebrado. As três regiões intestinais das fêmeas apresentaram aproximadamente 90% de seus vilos normais (graus 0 e 1), enquanto nos machos ocorreu 38% de vilos normais no duodeno e jejuno e 85% no íleo. Além disso, machos apresentaram graus mais acentuados de perda de epitélio (graus 3, 4, 5 e 6) que as fêmeas (grau 3). Os dados indicaram que a mucosa intestinal de pintos machos é mais sensível a prolongado jejum pós-eclosão que a de pintos fêmeas. A microscopia eletrônica de varredura pode ser usada como um método de rotina seguro para a caracterização e quantificação de perda de epitélio intestinal.

Influences of thermal and electric load fluctuations in the cogeneration attractiveness

The use of mean values of thermal and electric demand can be justifiable for synthesising the configuration and for estimating the economic results because it simplifies the analysis in a preliminary feasibility study of a cogeneration plant. For determining the cogeneration scheme that best fits the energetic needs of a process several cycles and combinations must be considered, and those technically feasible will be analysed according to economic models. Although interesting for a first approach, this procedure do not consider that the peaks and valleys present in the load patterns will impose additional constraints relatively to the equipment capacities. In this paper, the effects of thermal and electric load fluctuation to the cogeneration plant design were considered. An approach for modelling these load variability is proposed for comparing two competing thermal and electric parity competing schemes. A gas turbine associated to a heat recovery steam generator was then proposed and analysed for thermal- and electric-following operational strategies. Thermal-following option revealed to be more attractive for the technical and economic limits defined for this analysis. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Soroprevalência da arterite viral equina em mesorregiões paulistas entre 2007 e 2008

This study investigated the occurrence of equine arteritis virus antibodies using neutralization test in 1,400 horses from Campinas and macro metropolitan paulista mesoregions located at São Paulo State, between 2007 and 2008. Eighty (5.7%) samples showed antibodies to virus (titers from 4 to 4,096). Among the 42 cities, 15 (35.7%) presented at least one seropositive animal to equine arteritis virus. of the 238 farms analyzed 41 showed at least one seropositive animal. The occurrence was higher in sport horses like jumping horses, Quarter horses and was similar for female and male. The rate of seropositive was higher in animals older than 24 months of age. These results suggest the virus circulation among horse population in studied farms, and the need for continuing epidemiological surveillance studies.
