The electric field enhancement associated with detailed structure within novel optical antenna nanostructures is modeled using the surface integral equation technique in the context of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The antennae comprise random arrays of vertically aligned, multi-walled carbon nanotubes dressed with highly granular Ag. Different types of "hot-spot" underpinning the SERS are identified, but contrasting characteristics are revealed. Those at the outer edges of the Ag grains are antenna driven with field enhancement amplified in antenna antinodes while intergrain hotspots are largely independent of antenna activity. Hot-spots between the tops of antennae leaning towards each other also appear to benefit from antenna amplification.

A novel approach for introducing aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in a carbon-fibre composite pre-impregnated (prepreg) laminate, to improve the through-thickness fracture toughness, is presented. Carbon nanotube (CNT) 'forests' were grown on a silicon substrate with a thermal oxide layer, using a chemical vapour deposition (CVD) process. The forests were then transferred to a pre-cured laminate interface, using a combination of pressure and heat, while maintaining through-thickness CNT alignment. Standard Mode I and four-point bend end-notched flexure Mode II tests were undertaken on a set of specimens and compared with pristine specimens. Mode I fracture toughness for T700/M21 laminates was improved by an average of 31% while for T700/SE84LV specimens, an improvement of 61% was observed. Only T700/M21 specimens were tested in Mode II which yielded an average fracture toughness improvement of 161%. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) showed good wetting of the CNT forest as well as evidence of penetration of the forest into the adjacent plies. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

High density polyethylene (HDPE)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing using twin-screw extrusion. The extruded pellets were compression moulded at 200°C for 5min followed by cooling at different cooling rates (20°C/min and 300°C/min respectively) to produce sheets for characterization. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that the MWCNTs are uniformly dispersed in the HDPE. At 4 wt% addition of MWCNTs composite modulus increased by over 110% compared with the unfilled HDPE (regardless of the cooling rate). The yield strength of both unfilled and filled HDPE decreased after rapid cooling by about 10% due to a lower crystallinity and imperfect crystallites. The electrical percolation threshold of composites, irrespective of the cooling rate, is between a MWCNT concentration of 1∼2 wt%. Interestingly, the electrical resistivity of the rapidly cooled composite with 2 wt% MWCNTs is lower than that of the slowly cooled composites with the same MWCNT loading. This may be due to the lower crystallinity and smaller crystallites facilitating the formation of conductive pathways. This result may have significant implications for both process control and the tailoring of electrical conductivity in the manufacture of conductive HDPE/MWCNT nanocomposites.

In this letter, we report flexible, non corrosive, and light weight nickel nanoparticle@multi-walled carbon nanotube–polystyrene (Ni@MWCNT/PS) composite films as microwave absorbing material in the frequency range of S band (2-4 GHz). Dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability of composites having 0.5 and 1.5 wt. % filler amount were measured using the cavity perturbation technique. Reflection loss maxima of 33 dB (at 2.7 GHz) and 24 dB (at 2.7 GHz) were achieved for 0.5 and 1.5 wt. % Ni@MWCNT/PS composite films of 6 and 4 mm thickness, respectively, suggesting that low concentrations of filler provide significant electromagnetic interference shielding

Polyethylene oxide solution containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes have been electrospun onto a rotating collector to produce highly aligned arrays of electrospun nanofibers ranging in diameters from (200 – 360) nanometres. The addition of a surfactant (Triton X-100)is highly effective in dispersing carbon nanotube within an aqueous solution of polyethylene oxide and the resulting mixture can be electrospun without excessive clumping to produce nanofibers containing high loadings of nanotubes; in this case up to 5% wt thereby providing an effective route to electrically conductive nanofibres.

Ab initio simulations of carbon nanotubes interacting with ascorbic acid and nicotinamide are reported. The electronic transport properties of these systems are studied using a combination of density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green`s functions methods. The adsorptions of both molecules are observed to depend strongly on their functionalization. The interaction through the appropriate functionalized species modifies the structural and electronic properties of the original system, resulting in a chemisorption regime. Changes in the electronic transport properties are also observed, with reductions on the total electronic transmission probabilities. Nevertheless, when the molecules interact through the pristine form, a physisorption interaction is observed with insignificant structural and electronic transport changes. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The assembly of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into nanostructured films is attractive for producing functionalized hybrid materials and (bio-)chemical sensors, but this requires experimental methods that allow for control of molecular architecturcs. In this study, we exploit the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique to obtain two types of sensors incorporating CNTs. In the first, LbL films of alternating layers of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) dispersed in polyarninoamide (PAMAM) dendrimers and nickel phthalocyanine (NiTsPc) were used in amperometric detection of the neurotransmitter dopamine (DA). The electrochemical properties evaluated with cyclic voltammetry indicated that the incorporation of MWNTs in the PAMAM-NT/NiTsPc LbL films led to a 3-fold increase in the peak current, in addition to a decrease of 50 mV in the oxidation potential of DA. The latter allowed detection of DA even in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA), a typical interferent for DA. Another LbL film was obtained with layers of PAMAM and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) employed in field-effect-devices using a capacitive electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor structure (EIS). The adsorption of the film components was monitored by measuring the flat-band voltage shift in capacitance-voltage (C-P) curves, caused by the charges from the components. Constant capacitance (ConCap) measurements showed that the EISPAMAM/SWNT film displayed a high pH sensitivity (ca. 54.5 mV/pH), being capable of detecting penicillin G between 10(-4) mol L(-1) and 10(-2) mol L-1, when a layer of penicillinase was adsorbed atop the PAMAM/SWNT film. The electrochemical behaviour of multi-walled carbon nanotubes was compared with that of glassy carbon, and the differences were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy before and after acid pre-treatment. The electrochemical techniques showed that acid functionalisation significantly improves the electrocatalytic properties of carbon nanotubes. These electrocatalytic properties enhance the analytical signal, shift the oxidation peak potential to a less positive value, and the charge-transfers rate increase of both dopamine and K(4)[Fe(CN)(6)]. The functionalisation step and the resulting appearance of edge planes covered with different chemical groups were confirmed by FTIR measurements. Carbon nanotubes after acid pre-treatment are a potentially powerful analytical tool for sensor development. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A sensitive electrochemical acetylcholinesterase (AChE) biosensor was successfully developed on polyaniline (PANI) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) core-shell modified glassy carbon electrode (GC), and used to detect carbamate pesticides in fruit and vegetables (apple, broccoli and cabbage). The pesticide biosensors were applied in the detection of carbaryl and methomyl pesticides in food samples using chronoamperometry (CA). The GC/MWCNT/PANI/AChE biosensor exhibited detection limits of 1.4 and 0.95 mu mol L-1, respectively, for carbaryl and methomyl. These detection limits were below the allowable concentrations set by Brazilian regulation standards for the samples in which these pesticides were analysed. Reproducibility and repeatability values of 2.6% and 3.2%, respectively, were obtained in the conventional procedure. The proposed biosensor was successfully applied in the determination of carbamate pesticides in cabbage, broccoli and apple samples without any spiking procedure. The obtained results were in full agreement with those from the HPLC procedure. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this study, a novel material for the electrochemical determination of bisphenol A using a nanocomposite based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified with antimony nanoparticles has been investigated. The morphology, structure, and electrochemical performance of the nanocomposite electrodes were characterised by field emission gun scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. A scan rate study and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed that the bisphenol A oxidation product is adsorbed on nanocomposite electrode surface. Differential pulse voltammetry in phosphate buffer solution at pH 6, allowed the development of a method to determine bisphenol A levels in the range of 0.5-5.0 mu mol L-1, with a detection limit of 5.24 nmol L-1 (1.19 mu g L-1). Sensors are devices that have shown widespread use, from the detection of gas molecules to the tracking of chemical signals in biological cells. Single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) and graphene based electrodes have demonstrated to be an excellent material for the development of electrochemical biosensors as they display remarkable electronic properties and the ability to act as individual nanoelectrodes, display an excellent low-dimensional charge carrier transport, and promote surface electrocatalysis. The present work aims at the preparation and investigation of electrochemically modified SWCNT and graphene-based electrodes for applications in the field of biosensors. We initially studied SWCNT films and focused on their topography and surface composition, electrical and optical properties. Parallel to SWCNTs, graphene films were investigated. Higher resistance values were obtained in comparison with nanotubes films. The electrochemical surface modification of both electrodes was investigated following two routes (i) the electrografting of aryl diazonium salts, and (ii) the electrophylic addition of 1, 3-benzodithiolylium tetrafluoroborate (BDYT). Both the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the modified electrode surfaces were studied such as the degree of functionalization and their surface composition. The combination of Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, electrochemistry and other techniques, has demonstrated that selected precursors could be covalently anchored to the nanotubes and graphene-based electrode surfaces through novel carbon-carbon formation.
