Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is predominantly a cardiac ventricular hormone that promotes natriuresis and diuresis, inhibits the renin-anglotensin-aldosterone axis, and is a vasodilator. Plasma BNP levels are raised in essential hypertension, and more so in left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy and heart failure. Plasma BNP levels are also elevated in ischemic heart disease. Attempts have been made to use plasma BNP levels as a marker of LV dysfunction, but these have shown that plasma BNP levels are probably not sensitive enough to replace echocardiography in the diagnosis of LV dysfunction. Pericardial BNP or N-BNP may be more suitable markers of LV dysfunction. Plasma BNP levels are also elevated in right ventricular dysfunction, pregnancy-induced hypertension, aortic stenosis, age, subarachnoid hemorrhage, cardiac allograft rejection and cavopulmonary connection, and BNP may have an important pathophysiological role in some or all of these conditions. Clinical trials have demonstrated the natriuretic, diuretic and vasodilator effects, as well as inhibitory effects on renin and aldosterone of infused synthetic human BNP (nesiritide) in healthy humans. BNP infusion improves LV function in patients with congestive heart failure via a vasodilating and a prominent natriuretic effect. BNP infusion is useful for the treatment of decompensated congestive heart failure requiring hospitalization. The clinical potential of BNP is limited as it is a peptide and requires infusion. Drugs that modify the effects of BNP are furthering our understanding of the pathophysiological role and clinical potential of BNP. Increasing the effects of BNP may be a useful therapeutic approach in heart failure involving LV dysfunction. The levels of plasma BNP are increased by blockers, cardiac glycosides and vasopeptidase inhibitors, and this may contribute to the usefulness of these agents in heart failure. The virtual (or minimum) height of the F-region (h'F), recorded over a number of solar cycles for I I equatorial and mid-latitude ionosonde stations, was used to deduce the hemispheric (i.e. southern or northern hemisphere) character of equatorial stations. The semi-annual median monthly height (h'F) variations consist of two components: major local summer maximum and winter sub-maximum (about 5 percent of the summer maximum). This hemispheric pattern was most consistently observed for equatorial stations (within 5degrees of the geomagnetic equator) in a period centred on the local midnight (21-03 LT) but was also present, to a lesser extent, at mid-latitude stations and at other time intervals. It is evident that the physical parameter h'F defines the hemispheric character of an equatorial station which has different (sometimes opposite) geographic and geomagnetic latitudes. There is a sharp transition in the latitudinal character of the stations on both sides of the equator leading to hypothesis that the equal maxima in h'F in December and June solstices are observed at a near-equator position labelled as ionosonde deduced equator (IDE). Such a signature was observed for an American equatorial (both geographic and geomagnetic) station Talara (Peru) which is an experimental support of the hypothesis. The IDE can be another useful parameter characterising the equatorial ionosphere. This finding reveals a new application of the standard ionosonde data in defining the geophysical character of equatorial stations, being an important contribution to space climatology. The movements of the ricefield rats (Rattus argentiventer) near a trap-barrier system (TBS) were assessed in lowland flood-irrigated rice crops in West Java, Indonesia, to test the hypothesis that a TBS with a 'trap-crop' modifies the movements of rats within 200 m from the trap-crop. The home range use and locations of rat burrows were assessed using radiotelemetry at two sites, one with a TBS with trap-crop (Treatment site, the crop inside the fence was planted 3 weeks earlier than the surrounding crop) and the other with a TBS without trap-crop (Control site, the crop inside the fence was planted at the same time as the surrounding crop). Each TBS was a 50 x 50 m plastic fence with eight multiple-capture rat traps set at the base. More than 700 rats were caught in the TBS with trap-crop, whereas only 10 rats were caught in the TBS without trap-crop. The home range size of females was significantly smaller at the Treatment site (0.96 ha) than the Control site (2.99 ha), but there was no difference for males. Seventy-eight per cent of rats caught in the TBS and fitted with radiocollars had their daytime burrow locations within 200 m of the TBS. We could not determine if the rats caught in the TBS were residents or transients according to demographic parameters. Our results support the hypothesis that a TBS with a trap-crop protects the surrounding rice crop out to a distance of at least 200 m.

Ichthyosporea is a recently recognized group of morphologically simple eukaryotes, many of which cause disease in aquatic organisms. Ribosomal RNA sequence analyses place Ichthyosporea near the divergence of the animal and fungal lineages, but do not allow resolution of its exact phylogenetic position. Some of the best evidence for a specific grouping of animals and fungi (Opisthokonta) has come from elongation factor 1alpha, not only phylogenetic analysis of sequences but also the presence or absence of short insertions and deletions. We sequenced the EF-1alpha gene from the ichthyosporean parasite Ichthyophonus irregularis and determined its phylogenetic position using neighbor-joining, parsimony and Bayesian methods. We also sequenced EF-1alpha genes from four chytrids to provide broader representation within fungi. Sequence analyses and the presence of a characteristic 12 amino acid insertion strongly indicate that I. irregularis is a member of Opisthokonta, but do not resolve whether I. irregularis is a specific relative of animals or of fungi. However, the EF-1alpha of I. irregularis exhibits a two amino acid deletion heretofore reported only among fungi. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science (USA). All rights reserved.

Todos os anos, milhares de pessoas morrem vítimas de doenças causadas pelo consumo de produtos derivados do tabaco, este é considerado a principal causa de morte evitável. O tabaco também colabora com as seis das oito principais causas de mortes entre fumantes e não fumantes a nível mundial. Algumas medidas governamentais como as campanhas publicitárias antitabagistas, buscam alertar, conscientizar e mudar o pensamento e o interesse coletivo neste tipo de produto e consequentemente, diminuir a taxa de consumo. Avaliar se as crenças, pensamentos e atitudes dos brasileiros são influenciados por este tipo de publicidade e se o comportamento relacionado a não fumar ou deixar de fumar é uma consequência da persuasão das mensagens antitabagistas, ajudam a conhecer o real impacto destas campanhas e sua eficácia. Através dos métodos de investigação quantitativo e qualitativo e das análises extensiva e semiótica, a pesquisa inquiriu 272 indivíduos brasileiros à respeito das advertências sanitárias e das campanhas publicitárias antitabagistas, classificando-os como não fumantes, ex-fumantes e fumantes, identificando os elementos visuais e textuais que compõem a narrativa publicitária de 5 anúncios antitabagistas. Após a análise, a pesquisa concluiu que as campanhas publicitárias coordenadas pelo INCA – Instituto Nacional de Câncer, denominadas campanhas antitabagistas, são eficazes para alertar e conscientizar os indivíduos sobre os males causados pelo consumo do cigarro mas ineficazes para influenciar suas atitudes e comportamentos. Embora estas consigam persuadir à crença nas mensagens, fazendo com que os indivíduos as vejam como verdadeira, isto não é suficiente para que a intenção de deixar de fumar torne-se um ato prático. Todos os anúncios possuem o mesmo formato e a maioria utilizou o mesmo percurso visual, equilíbrio, enquadramento, luz, ângulo e função do personagem. Todos possuem textos com funções identificadora, ancoragem e apoio e a narrativa conota o cigarro como algo negativo, prejudicial, mortífero e destruidor.

Os serviços baseados em localização vieram dar um novo alento à criatividade dos programadores de aplicações móveis. A vulgarização de dispositivos com capacidades de localização integradas deu origem ao desenvolvimento de aplicações que gerem e apresentam informação baseada na posição do utilizador. Desde então, o mercado móvel tem assistido ao aparecimento de novas categorias de aplicações que tiram proveito desta capacidade. Entre elas, destaca-se a monitorização remota de dispositivos, que tem vindo a assumir uma importância crescente, tanto no sector particular como no sector empresarial. Esta dissertação começa por apresentar o estado da arte sobre os diferentes sistemas de posicionamento, categorizados pela sua eficácia em ambientes internos ou externos, assim como diferentes protocolos de comunicação em tempo quase-real. É também feita uma análise ao estado actual do mercado móvel. Actualmente o mercado possui diferentes plataformas móveis com características únicas que as fazem rivalizar entre si, com vista a expandirem a sua quota de mercado. É por isso elaborado um breve estudo sobre os sistemas operativos móveis mais relevantes da actualidade. É igualmente feita uma abordagem mais profunda à arquitectura da plataforma móvel da Apple - o iOS – que serviu de base ao desenvolvimento de uma solução optimizada para localização e monitorização de dispositivos móveis. A monitorização implica uma utilização intensiva de recursos energéticos e de largura de banda que os dispositivos móveis da actualidade não estão aptos a suportar. Dado o grande consumo energético do GPS face à precária autonomia destes dispositivos, é apresentado um estudo em que se expõem soluções que permitem gerir de forma optimizada a utilização do GPS. O elevado custo dos planos de dados facultados pelas operadoras móveis é também considerado, pelo que são exploradas soluções que visam minimizar a utilização de largura de banda. Deste trabalho, nasce a aplicação EyeGotcha, que para além de permitir localizar outros utilizadores de dispositivos móveis de forma optimizada, permite também monitorizar as suas acções baseando-se num conjunto de regras pré-definidas. Estas acções são reportadas às entidades monitoras, de modo automatizado e sob a forma de alertas. Visionando-se a comercialização da aplicação, é portanto apresentado um modelo de negócio que permite obter receitas capazes de cobrirem os custos de manutenção de serviços, aos quais o funcionamento da aplicação móvel está subjugado.

O telemóvel tem-se transformado numa ferramenta essencial no nosso dia-a-dia, constantemente são lançadas novas tecnologias que potenciam o uso do telemóvel nas tarefas do nosso quotidiano. Atualmente a grande tendência passa por fazer o download de aplicações com o objetivo de obter mais e diferentes tipos de informação, existe o desejo de ler de forma simples e intuitiva o mundo que nos rodeia, como se cada elemento fosse um objeto sobre o qual conseguiremos obter informação através do telemóvel. A tecnologia Near Field Communication (NFC) ajuda a transformar este desejo ou necessidade numa realidade de simples alcance. Podemos anexar “identificadores” nos objetos e “ver” estes identificadores através do telemóvel recorrendo a aplicações que fazem a ponte com os sistemas que nos permitem obter mais informação, por exemplo, internet. O NFC especifica um padrão de comunicação de redes sem fios, que permite a transferência de dados entre dois dispositivos separados por uma distância máxima de 10cm. NFC foi desenhado para ser integrado em telemóveis, que podem comunicar com outros telemóveis equipados com NFC ou ler informação de cartões ou tags. A dissertação avalia as oportunidades que a tecnologia NFC oferece ao mundo das telecomunicações móveis, nomeadamente na realidade do operador Vodafone Portugal, principalmente numa relação Empresa - Cliente. Esta tecnologia reúne o interesse dos fabricantes dos telemóveis, dos operadores e de parceiros críticos que vão ajudar a potenciar o negócio, nomeadamente entidades bancárias e interbancárias. A tecnologia NFC permite utilizar o telemóvel como um cartão de crédito/debito, ticketing, ler informação de posters (Smart Poster) que despoletem navegação contextualizada para outras aplicações ou para a internet para obter mais informação ou concretizar compras, estes são alguns cenários identificados que mais valor o NFC consegue oferecer. A dissertação foca-se na avaliação técnica do NFC na área de Smart Posters e resulta na identificação num conjunto de novos cenários de utilização, que são especificados e complementados com o desenvolvimento de um protótipo.

Moving towards autonomous operation and management of increasingly complex open distributed real-time systems poses very significant challenges. This is particularly true when reaction to events must be done in a timely and predictable manner while guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS) constraints imposed by users, the environment, or applications. In these scenarios, the system should be able to maintain a global feasible QoS level while allowing individual nodes to autonomously adapt under different constraints of resource availability and input quality. This paper shows how decentralised coordination of a group of autonomous interdependent nodes can emerge with little communication, based on the robust self-organising principles of feedback. Positive feedback is used to reinforce the selection of the new desired global service solution, while negative feedback discourages nodes to act in a greedy fashion as this adversely impacts on the provided service levels at neighbouring nodes. The proposed protocol is general enough to be used in a wide range of scenarios characterised by a high degree of openness and dynamism where coordination tasks need to be time dependent. As the reported results demonstrate, it requires less messages to be exchanged and it is faster to achieve a globally acceptable near-optimal solution than other available approaches.

The development of biopharmaceutical manufacturing processes presents critical constraints, with the major constraint being that living cells synthesize these molecules, presenting inherent behavior variability due to their high sensitivity to small fluctuations in the cultivation environment. To speed up the development process and to control this critical manufacturing step, it is relevant to develop high-throughput and in situ monitoring techniques, respectively. Here, high-throughput mid-infrared (MIR) spectral analysis of dehydrated cell pellets and in situ near-infrared (NIR) spectral analysis of the whole culture broth were compared to monitor plasmid production in recombinant Escherichia coil cultures. Good partial least squares (PLS) regression models were built, either based on MIR or NIR spectral data, yielding high coefficients of determination (R-2) and low predictive errors (root mean square error, or RMSE) to estimate host cell growth, plasmid production, carbon source consumption (glucose and glycerol), and by-product acetate production and consumption. The predictive errors for biomass, plasmid, glucose, glycerol, and acetate based on MIR data were 0.7 g/L, 9 mg/L, 0.3 g/L, 0.4 g/L, and 0.4 g/L, respectively, whereas for NIR data the predictive errors obtained were 0.4 g/L, 8 mg/L, 0.3 g/L, 0.2 g/L, and 0.4 g/L, respectively. The models obtained are robust as they are valid for cultivations conducted with different media compositions and with different cultivation strategies (batch and fed-batch). Besides being conducted in situ with a sterilized fiber optic probe, NIR spectroscopy allows building PLS models for estimating plasmid, glucose, and acetate that are as accurate as those obtained from the high-throughput MIR setup, and better models for estimating biomass and glycerol, yielding a decrease in 57 and 50% of the RMSE, respectively, compared to the MIR setup. However, MIR spectroscopy could be a valid alternative in the case of optimization protocols, due to possible space constraints or high costs associated with the use of multi-fiber optic probes for multi-bioreactors. In this case, MIR could be conducted in a high-throughput manner, analyzing hundreds of culture samples in a rapid and automatic mode.

Solid-contact sensors for the selective screening of sulfadiazine (SDZ) in aquaculture waters are reported. Sensor surfaces were made from PVC membranes doped with tetraphenylporphyrin-manganese(III) chloride, α-cyclodextrin, β-cyclodextrin, or γ-cyclodextrin ionophores that were dispersed in plasticizer. Some membranes also presented a positive or a negatively charged additive. Phorphyrin-based sensors relied on a charged carrier mechanism. They exhibited a near-Nernstian response with slopes of 52 mV decade−1 and detection limits of 3.91 × 10−5 mol L−1. The addition of cationic lipophilic compounds to the membrane originated Nernstian behaviours, with slopes ranging 59.7–62.0 mV decade−1 and wider linear ranges. Cyclodextrin-based sensors acted as neutral carriers. In general, sensors with positively charged additives showed an improved potentiometric performance when compared to those without additive. Some SDZ selective membranes displayed higher slopes and extended linear concentration ranges with an increasing amount of additive (always <100% ionophore). The sensors were independent from the pH of test solutions within 2–7. The sensors displayed fast response, always <15 s. In general, a good discriminating ability was found in real sample environment. The sensors were successfully applied to the fast screening of SDZ in real waters samples from aquaculture fish farms. The method offered the advantages of simplicity, accuracy, and automation feasibility. The sensing membrane may contribute to the development of small devices allowing in locus measurements of sulfadiazine or parent-drugs.

The Santa Tenesinha region in northeaster Mato Grosso has a varied vegetation which is principally hammock pantanal. The flat clayey alluvial ground between the hummocks is coveted with a continuous non-cerrado ground cover dominated by grasses but which harbors sedges and a lange herb flora. No woody plants grow in it. The tops of the 10-20m wide, slightly elliptical hummocks, 1.5-2 m high, 10-40 per hectare, are covered with cerrado plants: herbs, semlshrubs, thin- and thick-stemmed shrubs and low trees. For 4-5 months during the latter part of the rainy season, the regional water table rises to the surface and the ground between the hummocks becomes saturated or floods up to 1.5-2 m deep. The tops of the hummocks almost always remain above high water level. In the dry season the surface soil dries out completely. This alternation of saturation or shallow flooding and dryness, prevents woody plant, growth between the hummocks, and except for a few tolerant species, also prevents woody plant. growth on the lower part of the hummochs. The gallery forests in the pantanal are seasonally flooded more deeply but their soil does not dry out so thonoughly in the dry season so woody plant growth is not prevented.

Over a seven year period from 1991 to 1997, 22 species of tiger beetles, representing nine genera, were recorded near Manaus, Brazil. In the Whitewaterfloodplains along the Rio Solimões-Amazonas (Ilha de Marchantaria), three diurnal species inhabit inundation forests and six species (two diurnal, four nocturnal) live in open areas. Data on their natural history and adaptation to living conditions in floodplains are presented. Fifteen species were located on non-flooded uplands (Reserva Florestal A. Ducke). Five diurnal species inhabit the forest floor, two species are canopy dwellers, and eight species (seven diurnal, one nocturnal) live in open areas on whitesand or laterite. Only one species, Pentacomia lacordairei, was found in both floodplain and upland forests. A key to the larvae of tiger beetle genera located near Manaus is presented.

Timber frame buildings are well known as an efficient seismic resistant structure popular all over the world not only due to their seismic performance, but also to their low cost and the strength they offer. These constructions still exist today and it is important to be able to preserve them, so a better knowledge on their behaviour is sought. Furthermore, historic technologies could be used even in modern constructions to build seismic resistant buildings using more natural materials with lesser costs. A great rehabilitation effort is being carried out on this type of buildings, as their neglect has led to decay or their change in use and alterations to the structure has led to the need to retrofit such buildings; only recently studies on their behaviour have become available and only a few of them address the issue of possible strengthening techniques for this kind of walls. In this scope, an innovative retrofitting technique (near surface mounted steel flat bars) is proposed and validated on traditional timber frame walls based on an extensive experimental program. The results of the static cyclic tests on distinct wall typologies retrofitted with the NSM technique are herein presented and discussed in detail. The main features on deformation, lateral stiffness, lateral resistance and seismic performance indexes are analysed
