We present an almost 3 year long time series of shell fluxes and oxygen isotopes of left-coiling Neogloboquadrina pachyderma and Turborotalita quinqueloba from sediment traps moored in the deep central Irminger Sea. We determined their response to the seasonal change from a deeply mixed water column with occasional deep convection in winter to a thermally stratified water column with a surface mixed layer (SML) of around 50 m in summer. Both species display very low fluxes during winter with a remnant summer population holding out until replaced by a vital population that seeds the subsequent blooms. This annual population overturning is marked by a 0.7 per mill increase in d18O in both species. The shell flux of N. pachyderma peaks during the spring bloom and in late summer, when stratification is close to its minimum and maximum, respectively. Both export periods contribute about equally and account for >95% of the total annual flux. Shell fluxes of T. quinqueloba show only a single broad pulse in summer, thus following the seasonal stratification cycle. The d18O of N. pachyderma reflects temperatures just below the base of the seasonal SML without offset from isotopic equilibrium. The d18O pattern of T. quinqueloba shows a nearly identical amplitude and correlates highly with the d18O of N. pachyderma. Therefore T. quinqueloba also reflects temperature near the base of the SML but with a positive offset from isotopic equilibrium. These offsets contrast with observations elsewhere and suggest a variable offset from equilibrium calcification for both species. In the Irminger Sea the species consistently show a contrast in their flux timings. Their flux-weighted delta d18O will thus dominantly be determined by seasonal temperature differences at the base of the SML rather than by differences in their depth habitat. Consequently, their sedimentary delta d18O may be used to infer the seasonal contrast in temperature at the base of the SML.

In traditional electrical sensing applications, multiplexing and interconnecting the different sensing elements is a major challenge. Recently, many optical alternatives have been investigated including optical fiber sensors of which the sensing elements consist of fiber Bragg gratings. Different sensing points can be integrated in one optical fiber solving the interconnection problem and avoiding any electromagnetical interference (EMI). Many new sensing applications also require flexible or stretchable sensing foils which can be attached to or wrapped around irregularly shaped objects such as robot fingers and car bumpers or which can even be applied in biomedical applications where a sensor is fixed on a human body. The use of these optical sensors however always implies the use of a light-source, detectors and electronic circuitry to be coupled and integrated with these sensors. The coupling of these fibers with these light sources and detectors is a critical packaging problem and as it is well-known the costs for packaging, especially with optoelectronic components and fiber alignment issues are huge. The end goal of this embedded sensor is to create a flexible optical sensor integrated with (opto)electronic modules and control circuitry. To obtain this flexibility, one can embed the optical sensors and the driving optoelectronics in a stretchable polymer host material. In this article different embedding techniques for optical fiber sensors are described and characterized. Initial tests based on standard manufacturing processes such as molding and laser structuring are reported as well as a more advanced embedding technique based on soft lithography processing.

Salty and warm Indian Ocean waters enter the South Atlantic via the Agulhas leakage, south of Africa. Model simulations and proxy evidence of Agulhas leakage strengthening during glacial terminations led to the hypothesis that it was an important modulator of the Atlantic Ocean circulation. Yet, the fate of the leakage salinity and temperature anomalies remains undocumented beyond the southern tip of Africa. Downstream of the leakage, new paleoceanographic evidence from the central Walvis Ridge (southeast Atlantic) shows that salinity increased at the thermocline, and less so at the surface, during glacial termination II. Thermocline salinity change coincided with higher frequency of Agulhas rings passage at the core location and with salinity maxima in the Agulhas leakage area, suggesting that leakage waters were incorporated in the Atlantic circulation through the thermocline. Hydrographic changes at the Walvis Ridge and in the leakage area display a distinct two-step structure, with a reversal at ca. 134 ka. This matched a wet interlude within the East Asia weak monsoon interval of termination II, and a short-lived North Atlantic warming. Such concurrence points to a Bølling-Allerød-like recovery of the Atlantic circulation amidst termination II, with a northward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and Southern Hemisphere westerlies, and attendant curtailment of the interocean connection south of Africa.

Background. In pre-school and primary education pupils differ in many abilities and competences (‘giftedness’). Yet mainstream educational practice seems rather homogeneous in providing age-based or grade-class subject matter approaches. Aims. To clarify whether pupils scoring initially at high ability level do develop and attain differently at school with respect to language and arithmetic compared with pupils displaying other initial ability levels. To investigate whether specific individual, family or educational variables co-vary with the attainment of these different types of pupils in school. Samples. Data from the large-scale PRIMA cohort study including a total of 8258 grade 2 and 4 pupils from 438 primary schools in The Netherlands. Methods. Secondary analyses were carried out to construct gain scores for both language and arithmetic proficiency and a number of behavioural, attitudinal, family and educational characteristics. The pupils were grouped into different ability categories (highly able; able; above average; average and below). Further analyses used Pearson correlations and analyses of variance both between and within ability categories. Cross-validation was done by introducing a cohort of younger pupils in pre-school and grouping both cohorts into decile groups based on initial ability in language and arithmetic. Results. Highly able pupils generally decreased in attainment in both language and arithmetic, whereas pupils in average and below average groups improved their language and arithmetic scores. Only with highly able pupils were some educational characteristics correlated with the pupils’ development in achievement, behaviour and attitudes. Conclusions. Pre-school and primary education should better match pupils’ differences in abilities and competences from their start in pre-school to improve their functioning, learning processes and outcomes. Recommendations for educational improvement strategies are presented in closing.

Optimal assistance of an adult, adapted to the current level of understanding of the student (scaffolding), can help students with emotional and behavioural problems (EBD) to demonstrate a similar level of understanding on scientific tasks, compared to students from regular education (Van Der Steen, Steenbeek, Wielinski & Van Geert, 2012). In the present study the optimal scaffolding techniques for EBD students were investigated, as well as how these differ from scaffolding techniques used for regular students. A researcher visited five EBD students and five regular students (aged three to six years old) three times in a 1,5 years period. Student and researcher worked together on scientific tasks about gravity and air pressure, while the researcher asked questions. An adaptive protocol was used, so that all children were asked the same basic questions about the mechanisms of the task. Beside this, the researcher was also allowed to ask follow-up questions and use scaffolding methods when these seemed necessary. We found a bigger amount of scaffolding in the group of EBD students compared to the regular students. The scaffolding techniques that were used also differed between the two groups. For EBD students, we saw more scaffolding strategies focused on keeping the student committed to the task, and less strategies aimed at the relationship between the child and the researcher. Furthermore, in the group of regular students we saw a decreasing trend in the amount of scaffolding over the course of three visits. This trend was not visible for the EBD students. These results highlight the importance for using different scaffolding strategies when working with EBD students compared to regular students. Future research can give a clearer image of the differences in scaffolding needs between these two groups.

BACKGROUND: Eighty per cent of Malawi's 8 million children live in rural areas, and there is an extensive tiered health system infrastructure from village health clinics to district hospitals which refers patients to one of the four central hospitals. The clinics and district hospitals are staffed by nurses, non-physician clinicians and recently qualified doctors. There are 16 paediatric specialists working in two of the four central hospitals which serve the urban population as well as accepting referrals from district hospitals. In order to provide expert paediatric care as close to home as possible, we describe our plan to task share within a managed clinical network and our hypothesis that this will improve paediatric care and child health.
PRESENTATION OF THE HYPOTHESIS: Managed clinical networks have been found to improve equity of care in rural districts and to ensure that the correct care is provided as close to home as possible. A network for paediatric care in Malawi with mentoring of non-physician clinicians based in a district hospital by paediatricians based at the central hospitals will establish and sustain clinical referral pathways in both directions. Ultimately, the plan envisages four managed paediatric clinical networks, each radiating from one of Malawi's four central hospitals and covering the entire country. This model of task sharing within four hub-and-spoke networks may facilitate wider dissemination of scarce expertise and improve child healthcare in Malawi close to the child's home.
TESTING THE HYPOTHESIS: Funding has been secured to train sufficient personnel to staff all central and district hospitals in Malawi with teams of paediatric specialists in the central hospitals and specialist non-physician clinicians in each government district hospital. The hypothesis will be tested using a natural experiment model. Data routinely collected by the Ministry of Health will be corroborated at the district. This will include case fatality rates for common childhood illness, perinatal mortality and process indicators. Data from different districts will be compared at baseline and annually until 2020 as the specialists of both cadres take up posts.
IMPLICATIONS OF THE HYPOTHESIS: If a managed clinical network improves child healthcare in Malawi, it may be a potential model for the other countries in sub-Saharan Africa with similar cadres in their healthcare system and face similar challenges in terms of scarcity of specialists.

The article is based on the research project titled “Intercultural Dimension in Corporate Culture of Multinational Companies” and it deals mainly with cultural stereotypes that influence business relations. The article takes a famous research of Geert Hofstede and extends it on Czech-Mexican business reality. The article is therefore dedicated to Czech businessmen who are interested in having good relations with Mexico and avoiding mistakes that could prevent them from doing so. The first part of the article covers Hofstede´s dimensions and compares them with other studies. The comments include topics such as social hierarchy in Mexico, Mexican collectivism and life values, approach to pragmatism of both Czech and Mexican nations and also how these nations tend to indulgency. The second part of the article is aimed at the image of Czech Republic in the foreign markets and includes the feedback on Czech work behaviour from Latinoamericans who have previously worked with Czechs.

My thesis situates itself within the field of the Philosophy of Worldviews. Specifically, it aims to address the normative question of what the task should be of such a philosophy when faced with the problem of conflicting beliefs between religious worldviews. To answer this question, I turn to the procedure of aporetical analysis, in short, aporetics. Firstly, aporetics offers a distinct method of consistency restoration within inconsistent sets on the basis of thesis rejection and thesis modification. Secondly, aporetics leads to an understanding of the availability of aporetic exits on the basis of epistemic criteria. On the one hand, this leads us to opt for an orientational monism/pluralism, which steers the middle course between the epistemic stances of exclusivism and pluralism. On the other hand, it allows us to identify epistemic criteria for worldview acquisition on the basis of three distinct superclasses. These superclasses can be derived from Jürgen Habermas' validity claims, and applied to the self-understanding of contemporary theories of religion.

Lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) were historically abundant in the Huron-Erie Corridor (HEC), a 160 km river/channel network composed of the St. Clair River, Lake St. Clair, and the Detroit River that connects Lake Huron to Lake Erie. In the HEC, most natural lake sturgeon spawning substrates have been eliminated or degraded as a result of channelization and dredging. To address significant habitat loss in HEC, multi-agency restoration efforts are underway to restore spawning substrate by constructing artificial spawning reefs. The main objective of this study was to conduct post-construction monitoring of lake sturgeon egg deposition and larval emergence near two of these artificial reef projects; Fighting Island Reef in the Detroit River, and Middle Channel Spawning Reef in the lower St. Clair River. We also investigated seasonal and nightly timing of larval emergence, growth, and vertical distribution in the water column at these sites, and an additional site in the St. Clair River where lake sturgeon are known to spawn on a bed of ~100 year old coal clinkers. From 2010-12, we collected viable eggs and larvae at all three sites indicating that these artificial reefs are creating conditions suitable for egg deposition, fertilization, incubation, and larval emergence. The construction methods and materials, and physical site conditions present in HEC artificial reef projects can be used to inform future spawning habitat restoration or enhancement efforts. The results from this study have also identified the likelihood of additional uncharacterized natural spawning sites in the St. Clair River. In addition to the field study, we conducted a laboratory experiment involving actual substrate materials that have been used in artificial reef construction in this system. Although coal clinkers are chemically inert, some trace elements can be reincorporated with the clinker material during the combustion process. Since lake sturgeon eggs and larvae are developing in close proximity to this material, it is important to measure the concentration of potentially toxic trace elements. This study focused on arsenic, which occurs naturally in coal and can be toxic to fishes. Total arsenic concentration was measured in samples taken from four substrate treatments submerged in distilled water; limestone cobble, rinsed limestone cobble, coal clinker, and rinsed coal clinker. Samples were taken at three time intervals: 24 hours, 11 days, and 21 days. ICP-MS analysis showed that concentrations of total arsenic were below the EPA drinking water standard (10 ppb) for all samples. However, at the 24 hour sampling interval, a two way repeated measures ANOVA with a Holm-Sidak post hoc analysis (α= 0.05) showed that the mean arsenic concentration was significantly higher in the coal clinker substrate treatment then in the rinsed coal clinker treatment (p=0.006), the limestone cobble treatment (p

The present research aims to analyse the impact of corporate governance and cultural dimensions in dividend policy. The corporate governance and dividend policy have a close relationship, in that both are evidenced in literature to mitigate agency problems. Cultural factors are also related to agency problems. The existence of agency problems and their solutions differs across countries and it is related to the implementation of the mechanisms of governance. So, cultural factors may have influence on corporate governance and dividend policy. Our sample consists in 1 232 companies belonging to the main indices of 38 countries classified as emerging or developed. To measure the quality of firm level corporate governance, we use the ASSET4 Corporate Governance Performance Index, developed by Thomson Reuters, and as proxy of culture we use three cultural dimensions developed by Geert Hofstede, namely uncertainty avoidance, masculinity and indulgence. We obtained significant empirical evidence that firms with high quality of corporate governance pay higher dividends. With regard to cultural factors, we confirm that in countries with high levels of masculinity and uncertainty avoidance, the dividend payout ratio is lower. On the other hand, countries with high level of indulgence have higher dividend payout ratio. However, we verify that the impact of cultural effects is minimized when the firms have a high quality level of corporate governance. Additionally, we found that the impact of corporate governance and cultural factors in dividend policy differs when dealing with emerging or developed countries.

In the present study we show that luxS of Bifidobacterium breve UCC2003 is involved in the production of the interspecies signaling molecule autoinducer-2 (AI-2), and that this gene is essential for gastrointestinal colonization of a murine host, while it is also involved in providing protection against Salmonella infection in Caenorhabditis elegans. We demonstrate that a B. breve luxS-insertion mutant is significantly more susceptible to iron chelators than the WT strain and that this sensitivity can be partially reverted in the presence of the AI-2 precursor DPD. Furthermore, we show that several genes of an iron starvation-induced gene cluster, which are downregulated in the luxS-insertion mutant and which encodes a presumed iron-uptake system, are transcriptionally upregulated under in vivo conditions. Mutation of two genes of this cluster in B. breve UCC2003 renders the derived mutant strains sensitive to iron chelators while deficient in their ability to confer gut pathogen protection to Salmonella-infected nematodes. Since a functional luxS gene is present in all tested members of the genus Bifidobacterium, we conclude that bifidobacteria operate a LuxS-mediated system for gut colonization and pathogen protection that is correlated with iron acquisition.
