Apparatus for scanning a moving object includes a visible waveband sensor oriented to collect a series of images of the object as it passes through a field of view. An image processor uses the series of images to form a composite image. The image processor stores image pixel data for a current image and predecessor image in the series. It uses information in the current image and its predecessor to analyse images and derive likelihood measures indicating probabilities that current image pixels correspond to parts of the object. The image processor estimates motion between the current image and its predecessor from likelihood weighted pixels. It generates the composite image from frames positioned according to respective estimates of object image motion. Image motion may alternatively be detected be a speed sensor such as Doppler radar sensing object motion directly and providing image timing signals
A nearly real-time high temperature laser-plasma diagnostic using photonuclear reactions in tantalum

A method of measuring the temperature of the fast electrons produced in ultraintense laser-plasma interactions is described by inducing photonuclear reactions, in particular (gamma,n) and (gamma,3n) reactions in tantalum. Analysis of the gamma rays emitted by the daughter nuclei of these reactions using a germanium counter enables a relatively straightforward near real-time temperature measurement to be made. This is especially important for high temperature plasmas where alternative diagnostic techniques are usually difficult and time consuming. The application of high intensity laser-produced gamma rays is discussed with regard to picosecond resolution deep-penetration radiography. The spectrum and angular distribution of these gamma rays is measured using an array of thermoluminescent detectors for both an underdense (gas) target and an overdense (solid) target. It is found that the use of an underdense target in a laser plasma accelerator configuration produces a much more intense and directional source. The peak dose is also increased significantly. Radiography is demonstrated in these experiments and the source size is also estimated. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Nursing research leans heavily towards naturalism, with phenomenology commonly adopted. The three main schools of phenomenology used are Husserl's descriptive approach, Heidegger's interpretive hermeneutic approach and the Dutch Utrecht School of phenomenology which combines characteristics of both. Husserl's approach--the description of ordinary human experiences as perceived by each individual--involves four main steps: bracketing, intuiting, analysing and describing. Many phenomenological nurse researchers consciously decide to adopt a Heideggerian approach because of the perceived difficulties in achieving bracketing. This paper examines the concept of bracketing (epoché) and outlines some of the practical considerations when attempting to achieve it.

This paper describes the main parameters - contrast, spatial resolution, and thermal sensitivity - which define the performance of any stand-off imaging system. The origin of the signature for both metal and dielectric objects hidden under clothing in the frequency range from 100 GHz to 500 GHz is discussed. At 100 GHz the signature is dominated by reflection whilst at 500 GHz it is dominated by emission. A 94-GHz-passive millimetre-wave imaging system has been designed and fabricated to image objects under clothing. This imager is based on a Schmidt camera folded using polarisation techniques.
