From stems of Aristolochia chamissonis Duch., five new diterpenes, one rearranged (4 --> 2)-abeo-clerodane and four ent-clerodanes, were isolated. Their structures were determined to be (+)-(4 --> 2)-abeo-kolavelool-3-oic acid, (-)-13-epi-2-oxokolavelool, (-)-2 beta-hydroxykolavelool, (-)-2 beta-hydroperoxykolavelool and (+)- 13-epi-2 alpha-hydroxykolavelool. In addition, lignans, sesquiterpenes, steroids and two known ent-clerodane diterpenes were isolated. (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

In some practical problems, for instance in the control systems for the suppression of vibration in mechanical systems, the state-derivative signals are easier to obtain than the state signals. New necessary and sufficient linear matrix inequalities (LMI) conditions for the design of state-derivative feedback for multi-input (MI) linear systems are proposed. For multi-input/multi-output (MIMO) linear time-invariant or time-varying plants, with or without uncertainties in their parameters, the proposed methods can include in the LMI-based control designs the specifications of the decay rate, bounds on the output peak, and bounds on the state-derivative feedback matrix K. These design procedures allow new specifications and also, they consider a broader class of plants than the related results available in the literature. The LMIs, when feasible, can be efficiently solved using convex programming techniques. Practical applications illustrate the efficiency of the proposed methods.

The structure of 5,7,9,10-tetramethoxy-3-methyl-1 H-naphtho[2,3-c]pyran-1-one, C18H18O6, a derivative of a natural isocoumarin isolated from Paepalanthus bromelioides, was determined by X-ray analysis, which unequivocally confirmed the previously assigned structure. Small deviations from the standard angles, resulting from steric hindrance between the methoxyl and carbonyl groups, were observed.

The anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects of trans-dehydrocrotonin, isolated from the bark of Croton cajucara (Euphorbiaceae), were investigated using several animal models. The trans-dehydrocrotonin produced a significant inhibition of carrageenin-induced paw edema and cotton pellet granuloma in rats. It also inhibited the writhings in mice induced by acetic acid, but did not show a significant effect in the hot-plate test in mice. The LD(50) of t-DCTN was 555.0 mg/kg (p.o.) for mice.

The investigation of Aristolochia brasiliensis and A. esperanzae afforded 12 clerodane derivatives, including the following six novel ones: rel (5S, 8R, 9S, 10R)-2-oxo-ent-3-cleroden-15-oic acid, rel (5S, 8R, 9S, 10R)-2-oxo-ent-clerod-3,13-dien-15-oic acid methyl ester, (5R, 8R, 9S, 10R)-ent-3-cleroden-15-oic acid, rel (5S, 8R, 9S, 10R)-ent-clerod-3,13-dien-15-oic acid, (2S, 5R, 8R, 9S, 10R)-2-hydroperoxy-ent-3-cleroden-15-oic acid methyl ester and (2S, 5R, 8R, 9S, 10R)-2-hydroperoxy-ent-clerod-3,13-dien-15-oic acid methyl ester. The structures were assigned on the basis of spectral data and derivatization by chemical reactions. The occurrence of this type of diterpene has not previously been reported in Aristolochiaceae. © 1987.

We present a higher derivative gauge theory in (2 + 1) dimensions which can have its parameters suitably tuned in order to become a consistent quantum field theory, in the sense that both tachyons and ghosts are absent from the particle spectrum of the theory.

It is shown that massive fermions have their helicity flipped on account of their interaction with an electromagnetic field described by Podolsky's generalized electrodynamics. Massless fermions, in turn, seem to be unaffected by the electromagnetic field as far as their helicity is concerned. © Springer-Verlag 1997.

The electrochemical behavior of aniline protected by a nitrobenzene sulphonyl group in aqueous solution at a mercury electrode is reported. At pH < 10 the compound was reduced in a single well-defined step. Reduction of the nitro group involving a preceding protonation step was postulated. Two reduction steps are present at higher pH (pH > 11). Controlled potential electrolysis confirms that the reduction of the nitro group in a four-electron step to N-phenyl-4-hydroxylamine sulphonamide is always the preponderant process. ©1997 Soc. Bras. Bioactivity-guided fractionation of several bioactive extracts obtained from Cerrado and Atlantic Forest plant species led to the isolation of potent DNA-damaging piperidine 1-5 and guanidine alkaloids 6-9 from Cassia leptophylla and Pterogyne nitens respectively, two common Leguminosae from Atlantic Forest. By means of biotechnological approach on Maytenus aquifolium, a species from Cerrado, moderate DNA-damaging sesquiterpene pyridine alkaloid 10-11 was isolated. Bioassay-guided fractionation on Casearia sylvestris, a medicinal plant species found in Cerrado and Atlantic Forest, led to the isolation of clerodane diterpenes 12-13 which showed effect on DNA. In addition, we have reported several interesting potent antifungal iridoids: 1β-hydroxy-dihydrocornin (14), 1α-hydroxy-dihydrocornin (15), α-gardiol (16), β-gardiol (17), plumericin (18), isoplumericin (19), 11-O-trans-caffeoylteucrein (20); ester derivative: 2-methyl-4-hydroxy-butyl-caffeoate (21), amide N-[7-(3'.4'-methylenedioxyphenyl)-2Z, 4Z-heptadienoyl] pyrrolidine (22) and triterpene viburgenin (23).

A simple algorithm for computing the propagator for higher derivative gravity theories based on the Barnes-Rivers operators is presented. The prescription is used, among other things, to obtain the propagator for quadratic gravity in an unconventional gauge. We also find the propagator for both gravity and quadratic gravity in an interesting gauge recently baptized the Einstein gauge [Hitzer and Dehnen, Int. J. Theor. Phys. 36 (1997), 559].

From the hexane-soluble fraction of an ethanol extract from leaves and stems of Stemodia foliosa (Scrophulariaceae), the new stearic acid 4-[(n-pentoxy)phenethyl] ester (1) was isolated. This compound exhibited antibacterial properties at 10μg/mL concentration by using disc diffusion method against Gram-positive bacteria Bacillus cereus and Bacillus subtilis and fast-acid bacterium Mycobacterium fortuitum. The structure of the new compound was elucidated by spectroscopic methods and by chemical conversion.

The most general quantum mechanical wave equation for a massive scalar particle in a metric generated by a spherically symmetric mass distribution is considered within the framework of higher derivative gravity (HDG). The exact effective Hamiltonian is constructed and the significance of the various terms is discussed using the linearized version of the above-mentioned theory. Not only does this analysis shed new light on the long standing problem of quantum gravity concerning the exact nature of the coupling between a massive scalar field and the background geometry, it also greatly improves our understanding of the role of HDG's coupling parameters in semiclassical calculations.
