Over the past few decades, ferromagnetic spinwave resonance in magnetic thin films has been used as a tool for studying the properties of magnetic materials. A full understanding of the boundary conditions at the surface of the magnetic material is extremely important. Such an understanding has been the general objective of this thesis. The approach has been to investigate various hypotheses of the surface condition and to compare the results of these models with experimental data. The conclusion is that the boundary conditions are largely due to thin surface regions with magnetic properties different from the bulk. In the calculations these regions were usually approximated by uniform surface layers; the spins were otherwise unconstrained except by the same mechanisms that exist in the bulk (i.e., no special "pinning" at the surface atomic layer is assumed). The variation of the ferromagnetic spinwave resonance spectra in YIG films with frequency, temperature, annealing, and orientation of applied field provided an excellent experimental basis for the study.
This thesis can be divided into two parts. The first part is ferromagnetic resonance theory; the second part is the comparison of calculated with experimental data in YIG films. Both are essential in understanding the conclusion that surface regions with properties different from the bulk are responsible for the resonance phenomena associated with boundary conditions.
The theoretical calculations have been made by finding the wave vectors characteristic of the magnetic fields inside the magnetic medium, and then combining the fields associated with these wave vectors in superposition to match the specified boundary conditions. In addition to magnetic boundary conditions required for the surface layer model, two phenomenological magnetic boundary conditions are discussed in detail. The wave vectors are easily found by combining the Landau-Lifshitz equations with Maxwell's equations. Mode positions are most easily predicted from the magnetic wave vectors obtained by neglecting damping, conductivity, and the displacement current. For an insulator where the driving field is nearly uniform throughout the sample, these approximations permit a simple yet accurate calculation of the mode intensities. For metal films this calculation may be inaccurate but the mode positions are still accurately described. The techniques necessary for calculating the power absorbed by the film under a specific excitation including the effects of conductivity, displacement current and damping are also presented.
In the second part of the thesis the properties of magnetic garnet materials are summarized and the properties believed associated with the two surface regions of a YIG film are presented. Finally, the experimental data and calculated data for the surface layer model and other proposed models are compared. The conclusion of this study is that the remarkable variety of spinwave spectra that arises from various preparation techniques and subsequent treatments can be explained by surface regions with magnetic properties different from the bulk.

We present the results of a study that uses theoretical and experimental methods to investigate the characteristics of the upconversion luminescence of Tm3+/Yb3+ codoped TeO2-BiCl3 glass system as a function of the BiCl3 fraction. These glasses are potentially important in the design of upconversion fiber lasers. Effect of local environment around Tm3+ on upconversion fluorescence intensity was analyzed by theoretical calculations. The structure and spectroscopic properties were investigated in the experiments by measuring the Raman spectra, IR transmission spectra, and absorption and fluorescence intensities at room temperature. The results indicate that blue luminescence quantum efficiency increases with increasing BiCl3 content from 10 to 60 mol%, which were interpreted by the increase of asymmetry of glass structure, decrease of phonon energy and removing of OH- groups. Thin-film single layers of Al2O3 and MgF2 were deposited upon super polished fused-silica by electron-beam evaporation. The subsequent optical constants n and k were reported for the spectral range of 180-230 nm. High-reflectance dense multilayer coatings for 193 nm were designed on the basis of the evaluated optical constants and produced. The spectra of the reflectance of HR coatings were compared to the theoretical calculations. HR mirrors of 27 layers with a reflectance of more than 98% were reported. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Two kinds of HfO2/SiO2 800 nm high-reflective (HR) coatings, with and without SiO2 protective layer were deposited by electron beam evaporation. Laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDT) were measured for all samples with femtosecond laser pulses. The surface morphologies and the depth information of all samples were observed by Leica optical microscopy and WYKO surface profiler, respectively. It is found that SiO2 protective layer had no positive effect on improving the LIDT of HR coating. A simple model including the conduction band electron production via multiphoton ionization and impact ionization is used to explain this phenomenon. Theoretical calculations show that the damage occurs first in the SiO2 protective layer for HfO2/SiO2 HR coating with SiO2 protective layer. The relation of LIDT for two kinds of HfO2/SiO2 HR coatings in calculation agrees with the experiment result. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the framework of dielectric theory, the static non-local self-energy of an electron near an ultra-thin polarizable layer has been calculated and applied to study binding energies of image-potential states near free-standing graphene. The corresponding series of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions have been obtained by numerically solving the one-dimensional Schrodinger equation. The imagepotential state wave functions accumulate most of their probability outside the slab. We find that the random phase approximation (RPA) for the nonlocal dielectric function yields a superior description for the potential inside the slab, but a simple Fermi-Thomas theory can be used to get a reasonable quasi-analytical approximation to the full RPA result that can be computed very economically. Binding energies of the image-potential states follow a pattern close to the Rydberg series for a perfect metal with the addition of intermediate states due to the added symmetry of the potential. The formalism only requires a minimal set of free parameters: the slab width and the electronic density. The theoretical calculations are compared with experimental results for the work function and image-potential states obtained by two-photon photoemission.

Thin film bulk acoustic wave resonator (FBAR) devices supporting simultaneously multiple resonance modes have been designed for gravimetric sensing. The mechanism for dual-mode generation within a single device has been discussed, and theoretical calculations based on finite element analysis allowed the fabrication of FBARs whose resonance modes have opposite reactions to temperature changes; one of the modes exhibiting a positive frequency shift for a rise of temperature whilst the other mode exhibits a negative shift. Both modes exhibit negative frequency shift for a mass load and hence by monitoring simultaneously both modes it is possible to distinguish whether a change in the resonance frequency is due to a mass load or temperature variation (or a combination of both), avoiding false positive/negative responses in gravimetric sensing without the need of additional reference devices or complex electronics.

We report the remarkable diffraction effects produced from circular patterned arrays of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Highly ordered circular arrays of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (with inter-nanotube spacings of 633 nm) display optical dispersion effects similar to compact discs. These arrays display remarkable diffraction patterns in the far field which are spatially continuous. High quality diffraction patterns were obtained experimentally which are in excellent agreement with the theoretical calculations. The achieved continuous diffraction patterns pave the way towards the utilization of engineered carbon nanotube arrays in applications like three dimensional holograms.

We investigate the dependence of the differential reflection on the structure parameters of quantum dot (QD) heterostructures in pump-probe reflection measurements by both numerical simulations based on the finite-difference time-domain technique and theoretical calculations based on the theory of dielectric films. It is revealed that the value and sign of the differential reflection strongly depend on the thickness of the cap layer and the QD layer. In addition, a comparison between the carrier dynamics in undoped and p-doped InAs/GaAs QDs is carried out by pump-probe reflection measurements. The carrier capture time from the GaAs barrier into the InAs wetting layer and that from the InAs wetting layer into the InAs QDs are extracted by appropriately fitting differential reflection spectra. Moreover, the dependence of the carrier dynamics on the injected carrier density is identified. A detailed analysis of the carrier dynamics in the undoped and p-doped QDs based on the differential reflection spectra is presented, and its difference with that derived from the time-resolved photoluminescence is discussed. Lattice constants, elasticity, band structure and piezoelectricity of hexagonal wideband gap BexZn1-xO ternary alloys are calculatedusing firstprinciples methods. The alloys' lattice constants obey Vegard's law well. As Be concentration increases, the bulk modulus and Young's modulus of the alloys increase, whereas the piezoelectricity decreases. We predict that BexZn1-xO/GaN/substrate (x = 0.022) multilayer structure can be suitable for high-frequency surface acoustic wave device applications. Our calculated results are in good agreement with experimental data and other theoretical calculations. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Theoretical calculations of the mode characteristics of an equilateral-triangle resonator (ETR) with a 10 mu m cavity side length show that the fundamental mode, with longitudinal mode index of 25, has a wavelength of 2.185 mu m and a longitudinal mode separation of 100 nm. This mode has a quality factor (similar to 2x10(5)) that is much larger than the first (similar to 5x10(4)) and second (similar to 3x10(4)) order modes, indicating that single fundamental mode lasing should be accessible over a broad wavelength tuning range. An electrically injected ETR based on this design is fabricated from an InGaAsSb/AlGaAsSb/GaSb, graded-index separate-confinement heterostructure, laser diode wafer with a 2.1 mu m emission wavelength. This device achieved single mode, continuous wave operation at 77 K with a threshold current of 0.5 mA and a single mode wavelength tuning range of 3.25 nm, which is accomplished by varying the injection current from 0.5 to 6.0 mA. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to measure the valence band offset at the ZnO/GaAs heterojunction interface. The valence band offset is determined to be 2.39 +/- 0.23 eV. As a consequence, a type-II heterojunction with a conduction band offset of -0.44 +/- 0.23 eV is found. The directly obtained value is in good agreement with the result of theoretical calculations based on the interface-induced gap states and the chemical electronegativity theory. Generally, dipole mode is a doubly degenerate mode. Theoretical calculations have indicated that the single dipole mode of two-dimensional photonic crystal single point defect cavity shows high polarization property. We present a structure with elongated lattice, which only supports a single y-dipole mode. With this structure we can eliminate the degeneracy, control the lasing action of the cavity and demonstrate the high polarization property of the single dipole mode. In our experiment, the polarization extinction ratio of the y-dipole mode is as high as 51 1.

The well-width dependence of in-plane optical anisotropy (IPOA) in (001) GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs quantum wells induced by in-plane uniaxial strain and interface asymmetry has been studied comprehensively. Theoretical calculations show that the IPOA induced by in-plane uniaxial strain and interface asymmetry exhibits much different well-width dependence. The strain-induced IPOA is inversely proportional to the energy spacing between heavy- and light-hole subbands, so it increases with the well width. However, the interface-related IPOA is mainly determined by the probability that the heavy- and light-holes appear at the interfaces, so it decreases with the well width. Reflectance difference spectroscopy has been carried out to measure the IPOA of (001) GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs quantum wells with different well widths. Strain- and interface-induced IPOA have been distinguished by using a stress apparatus, and good agreement with the theoretical prediction is obtained. The anisotropic interface potential parameters are also determined. In addition, the energy shift between the interface- and strain-induced 1H1E reflectance difference (RD) structures, and the deviation of the 1L1E RD signal away from the prediction of the calculation model have been discussed.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to measure the valence band offset (VBO) of the ZnO/SrTiO3 heterojunction. It is found that a type-II band alignment forms at the interface. The VBO and conduction band offset (CBO) are determined to be 0.62 +/- 0.23 and 0.79 +/- 0.23 eV, respectively. The directly obtained VBO value is in good agreement with the result of theoretical calculations based on the interface-induced gap states and the chemical electronegativity theory. Furthermore, the CBO value is also consistent with the electrical transport investigations.
