The Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system has been one of the most studied superconducting ceramic materials for industry applications. The most of the studies with this aim are on silver/ceramic composites, due to the benefits and great compatibility of this metal with the oxide. Tapes made by the powder in tube (PIT) method have been successfully tested in pilot power plants in many countries but in Brazil. In this paper, 5, 10, and 20-wt% silver powders are introduced to compose the core of the tape along with the Bi:2212 ceramic powder. The results of electrical experiments are compared with those made with no silver addition Ag tapes. The best current density, at 60 K and no applied magnetic field, was found for the 10-wt% silver proportion, doubling the value obtained for the tape with no silver in the core.

The Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system has been one of the most studied superconducting ceramic materials for industry applications. The most of the studies with this aim are on silver/ceramic composites, due to the benefits and great compatibility of this metal with the oxide. In this paper we describe a systematic and comparative study on Ag/BSCCO composite, made by the citrate route, in which the ceramic pellets are sintered in the presence of silver powder using several proportions and having several granulations. It was observed that the introduction of fine (0.5 and 2 μm) silver powder in the proportions of 5 wt. % always implies in a better critical current density compared to the no silver pellet. According to the results, the silver powder in excess of 5 wt.% may not promote best electrical properties, depending on the size of the silver particles.

A specific manufacturing process to obtain continuous glass fiber-reinforced RIFE laminates was studied and some of their mechanical properties were evaluated. Young's modulus and maximum strength were measured by three-point bending test and tensile test using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. Adhesion tests, thermal analysis and microscopy were used to evaluate the fiber-matrix adhesion, which is very dependent on the sintering time. The composite material obtained had a Young's modulus of 14.2 GPa and ultimate strength of 165 MPa, which corresponds to approximately 24 times the modulus and six times the ultimate strength of pure RIFE. These results show that the RIFE composite, manufactured under specific conditions, has great potential to provide structural parts with a performance suitable for application in structural components. Nanoscience aims at manipulating atoms, molecules and nano-size particles in a precise and controlled manner. Nano-scale control of the thin film structures of organic/polymeric materials is a prerequisite to the fabrication of sophisticated functional devices. The work presented in this thesis is a compilation of various polymer thin films with newly synthesized functional polymers. Cationic and anionic LC amphotropic polymers, p-type and n-type semiconducting polymers with triarylamine, oxadiazole, thiadiazole and triazine moieties are suitable materials to fabricate multilayers by layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly with a well defined internal structure. The LBL assembly is the ideal processing technique to prepare thin polymer film composites with fine control over morphology and composition at nano-scale thickness, which may have applications in photo-detectors, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), displays and sensors, as well as in solar cells. The multilayer build-up was investigated with amphotropic LC polymers individually by solution-dipping and spin-coating methods; they showed different internal orders with respect to layering and orientation of the mesogens, as a result of the liquid crystalline phase. The synthesized p-type and n-type semiconducting polymers were examined optically and electrochemically, suggesting that they are favorably promising as hole-(p-type) or electron-(n-type) transport materials in electronic and optoelectronic devices. In addition, we report a successful film deposition of polymers by the vacuum deposition method. The vapor deposition method provides a clean environment; it is solvent free and well suited to sequential depositions in hetero-structured multilayer system. As the potential applications, the fabricated polymer thin films were used as simple electrochromic films and also used as hole transporting layers in LEDs. Electrochemical and electrochromic characterizations of assembled films reveal that the newly synthesized polymers give rise to high contrast ratio and fast switching electrochromic films. The LEDs with vacuum deposited films show dramatic improvements in device characteristics, indicating that the films are promising as hole transporting layers. These are the result of not only the thin nano-scale film structures but also the combination with the high charge carrier mobility of synthesized semiconducting polymers.

The use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites for strengthening, repairing, or rehabilitating concrete structures has become more and more popular in the last 10 years. Irrespective of the type of strengthening used, design is conditioned, among others, by concrete-composite bond failure, normally attributed to stress at the interface between these two materials. Single shear, double shear, and notched beam tests are the bond tests most commonly used by the scientific community to estimate bond strength, effective length, and the bond stress-slip relationship. The present paper discusses the effect of concrete strength and adhesive thickness on the results of beam tests, which reproduce debonding conditions around bending cracks much more accurately. The bond stress-slip relationship was analyzed in a cross section near the inner edge, where stress was observed to concentrate. The ultimate load and the bond stress-slip relationship were visibly affected by concrete strength. Adhesive thickness, in turn, was found to have no significant impact on low-strength concrete but a somewhat greater effect on higher strength materials.

ABSTRACT The use of externally bonded (EB) fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites has gained acceptance during the last two decades in the construction engineering community, particularly in the rehabilitation of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Currently, to increase the shear resistance of RC beams, FRP sheets are externally bonded (EB-FRP) and applied on the external side surface of the beams to be strengthened with different configurations. Of more recent application, the near-surface mounted FRP bar (NSM-FRP) method is another technique successfully used to increase the shear resistance of RC beams. In the NSM method, FRP rods are embedded into grooves intentionally prepared in the concrete cover of the side faces of RC beams. While flexural strengthening has been widely developed and studied so far, the same doesn´t occur to shearing strength mainly due to its great complexity. Nevertheless, if design criteria are to be preserved more research should be done to this sort of strength, which are based on avoiding shear failure and its catastrophic consequences. However, in spite of this, accurately calculating the shear capacity of FRP shear strengthened RC beams remains a complex challenge that has not yet been fully resolved due to the numerous variables involved in the procedure. The objective of this Thesis is to develop methodologies to evaluate the capacity of FRP shear strengthened RC beams by dealing with the problem from a different point of view to the numerical modeling approach by using artificial intelligence techniques. With this purpose two different approaches have been developed: one concerned with the use of artificial neural networks and the other based on the implementation of an optimization approach developed jointly with the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and solved with genetic algorithms (GAs). With these approaches some of the difficulties concerned regarding the numerical modeling can be overcome. As an alternative tool to conventional numerical techniques, neural networks do not provide closed form solutions for modeling problems but do, however, offer a complex and accurate solution based on a representative set of historical examples of the relationship. Furthermore, they can adapt solutions over time to include new data. On the other hand, as a second proposal, an optimization approach has also been developed to implement simple yet accurate shear design equations for this kind of strengthening. This approach is developed in a multi-objective framework by considering experimental results of RC beams with and without NSM-FRP. Furthermore, the results obtained with the previous scheme based on ANNs are also used as a filter to choose the parameters to include in the design equations. Genetic algorithms are used to solve the optimization problem since they are especially suitable for solving multi-objective problems when compared to standard optimization methods. The key features of the two proposed procedures are outlined and their performance in predicting the capacity of NSM-FRP shear strengthened RC beams is evaluated by comparison with results from experimental tests and with predictions obtained using a simplified numerical model. A sensitivity study of the predictions of both models for the input parameters is also carried out.

High-Temperature Low-Sag (HTLS) high voltage overhead conductors offer higher operating temperatures, reduced resistance and less sag than conventional designs. With up to twice the current capacity for the same diameter conductor, they may help ease the power shortage in the constantly increasing electricity demand, but there might be some concerns about their corrosion resistance. These new conductors use materials relatively new to the power industry, such as advanced carbon fiber polymer matrix composites and unique metal matrix composites/nano-composites predominantly used in aerospace industries. This study has made an initial assessment of potential galvanic corrosion problems in three very different HTLS designs: ACCC (Aluminum Conductor Composite Core), ACCR (Aluminum Conductor Composite Reinforced) and ACSS (Aluminum Conductor Steel Supported). In particular the ACCC design was evaluated for its resistance to corrosion and compared to the other designs. The study concludes that all three designs can develop galvanic corrosion under certain circumstances. While the results are not sufficient to make service life predictions of any of the tested conductors, they point out the necessity of thorough corrosion testing of all new conductor designs.

Polymer/montmorillonite nanocomposites were prepared. Intercalation of 2-aminobenzene sulfonic acid with aniline monomers into montmorillonite modified by cation was followed by subsequent oxidative polymerization of monomers in the interlayer spacing. The clay was prepared by cation exchange process between sodium cation in (M–Na) and copper cation (M–Cu). XRD analyses show the manifestation of a basal spacing (d-spacing) for M–Cu changes depending on the inorganic cation and the polymer intercalated in the M–Cu structure. TGA analyses reveal that polymer/M–Cu composites is less stable than M–Cu. The conductivity of the composites is found to be 103 times higher than that for M–Cu. The microscopic examinations including TEM picture of the nanocomposite demonstrated an entirely different and more compatible morphology. Remarkable differences in the properties of the polymers have also been observed by UV–Vis and FTIR, suggesting that the polymer produced with presence of aniline has a higher degree of branching. The electrochemical behavior of the polymers extracted from the nanocomposites has been studied by cyclic voltammetry which indicates the electroactive effect of nanocomposite gradually increased with aniline in the polymer chain.

Interference lithography can create large-area, defect-free nanostructures with unique optical properties. In this thesis, interference lithography will be utilized to create photonic crystals for functional devices or coatings. For instance, typical lithographic processing techniques were used to create 1, 2 and 3 dimensional photonic crystals in SU8 photoresist. These structures were in-filled with birefringent liquid crystal to make active devices, and the orientation of the liquid crystal directors within the SU8 matrix was studied. Most of this thesis will be focused on utilizing polymerization induced phase separation as a single-step method for fabrication by interference lithography. For example, layered polymer/nanoparticle composites have been created through the one-step two-beam interference lithographic exposure of a dispersion of 25 and 50 nm silica particles within a photopolymerizable mixture at a wavelength of 532 nm. In the areas of constructive interference, the monomer begins to polymerize via a free-radical process and concurrently the nanoparticles move into the regions of destructive interference. The holographic exposure of the particles within the monomer resin offers a single-step method to anisotropically structure the nanoconstituents within a composite. A one-step holographic exposure was also used to fabricate self- healing coatings that use water from the environment to catalyze polymerization. Polymerization induced phase separation was used to sequester an isocyanate monomer within an acrylate matrix. Due to the periodic modulation of the index of refraction between the monomer and polymer, the coating can reflect a desired wavelength, allowing for tunable coloration. When the coating is scratched, polymerization of the liquid isocyanate is catalyzed by moisture in air; if the indices of the two polymers are matched, the coatings turn transparent after healing. Interference lithography offers a method of creating multifunctional self-healing coatings that readout when damage has occurred.
