The 1:1 mixed-ligand [{Cu(N3)2(diEten)}2] (diEten=N,N-diethylethylenediamine) complex has been synthesized and characterized by i.r. spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1. Its structure consists of a centrosymmetric Cu2N2 unit whose N atoms belong to end-on azido bridges. Each copper atom is also surrounded by three nitrogen atoms; two from one N, N-diethylethylenediamine, and one from the remaining azide. The five nitrogen atoms altogether occupy the vertices of a slightly distorted trigonal bipyramid, and the azidobridges produced a rather short Cu...Cu distance of 3.37 Å. © 1989 Chapman and Hall Ltd.

Synthesis, characterization, DFT simulation and biological assays of two new metal complexes of 2-(2-thienyl)benzothiazole - BTT are reported. The complexes [Ag(BTT)(2)NO3] - AgBTT2 and [Au(BTT)Cl]center dot 1/2H(2)O - AuBTT were obtained by mixing the ligand with silver (I) nitrate or gold(I) chloride in methanolic solution. Characterization of the complexes were based on elemental (C, H, N and S), thermal (TG-DTA) analysis, C-13 and H-1 NMR, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopic measurements, as well as the X-ray structure determination for AgBTT2. Spectroscopic data predicted by DFT calculations were in agreement with the experimental data for both complexes. The ligand BTT was synthesized by the condensation of 2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde and 2-aminothiophenol in a microwave furnace. AgBTT2 has a monomeric structure. Both complexes show a good activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Free BIT shows low antitubercular activity. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Phosphine ruthenate complexes containing the non-innocent ligands 4-chloro-1,2-phenylenediamine (opda-CI) and 3,3',4,4'-tetraamminebiphenyl (diopda) were synthesized and characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, electrochemistry, P-31{H-1} NMR and electronic spectroscopies. Crystals of cis-[RuCl2 (dppb)(bqdi-CI)] complex were isolated as a mixture of two conformational isomers due to different positions of the chlorine atoms of the o-phenylene ligand in relation to the P1 atom of the phosphine moiety. Aim of the present work of thesis is to synthesize new non-noble metal based complexes to be employ in redox reactions by a metal-ligand cooperative mechanism. The need of replacing toxic and expensive precious metal complexes with more available and benign metals, has led to the development of new compounds based on cobalt and iron, which are the metals investigated in this study. A carbonyl-tetrahydroborato-bis[(2-diisopropylphosphino)ethyl]amine-cobalt complex bearing a PNP-type ligand is synthesized by a three-step route. Optimization attempt of reaction route were assessed in order to lowering reaction times and solvent waste. New cobalt complex has been tested in esters hydrogenation as well as in acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of ethanol. Other varieties of substrates were also tested in order to evaluate any possible applications. Concerning iron complex, dicarbonyl-(η4-3,4-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,5-diphenylcyclopenta-2,4-dienone)(1,3-dimethyl-ilidene)iron is synthesized by a three steps route, involving transmetallation of a silver complex, derived from an imidazolium salt, to iron complex. In order to avoid solvent waste, optimization is assessed. Studies were performed to assess activity of triscarbonyl iron precursor toward imidazolium salt and silver complexes.

Metal-complex ionosilicas with cationic complexes into the mesoporous silica framework were prepared using anionic surfactants. The electrostatic interaction between the anionic surfactant and the cationic metal complexes incorporated in the silica framework allows for the fine tuning of the mesoporous structure. The gentle procedure of synthesis developed and mild ion-exchange extraction of the surfactant, allowed a cleaner route for the immobilization of homogeneous cationic catalysts in mesoporous silica, while protecting the structural and chemical integrity of the metal complexes.

New tin(IV) complexes of empirical formula, Sn(NNS)I-3 (NNS = anionic forms of the 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde Schiff bases of S-methyl- and S-benzyldithiocarbazate) have been prepared and characterized by a variety of physico-chemical techniques. In the solid state, the Schiff bases exist as the thione tautomer but in solution and in the presence of tin(IV) iodide they convert to the thiol tautomer and coordinate to the tin atom in their deprotonated thiolate forms. The structures of the free ligand, Hqaldsbz and its triiodotin(IV) complex, [Sn(qaldsbz)I-3] have been determined by X-ray diffraction. The complex, [Sn(qaldsbz)I-3] has a distorted octahedral structure with the Schiff base coordinated to the tin atom as a uninegatively charged tridentate chelating agent via the quinoline nitrogen atom, the azomethine nitrogen atom and the thiolate sulfur atom. The three iodo ligands are coordinated meridionally to the tin atom. The distortion from an ideal octahedral geometry of [Sn(qaldsbz)I-3] is attributed to the restricted bite size of the tridentate Schiff base ligand. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Il presente lavoro di tesi si inserisce in un progetto di ricerca volto alla sintesi di nuovi complessi di metalli di transizione per lo sviluppo di catalizzatori da impiegare in reazioni di catalisi omogenea. In particolare il mio progetto si è concentrato sulla sintesi di complessi organometallici di manganese con leganti carbenici N-eterociclici (NHC). La scelta dei leganti è stata effettuata in modo tale da poter avere leganti chelanti NHC di tipo MIC (mesoionic carbene) sintetizzati tramite cicloaddizione tra un alchino ed un azide catalizzata da rame (CuAAC) e N-alchilazione. Lo studio di questi complessi a base di manganese è ancora tutt’oggi agli albori, leganti NHC vengono molto utilizzati grazie alla possibilità di variarne le proprietà steriche ed elettroniche e alla possibilità di formare legami forti con quasi tutti i metalli. Il manganese è stato scelto poiché un elemento abbondante, poco tossico e poco costoso. The present thesis work is part of a research project aimed at the synthesis of new transition metal complexes to be used in homogeneous catalysis reactions. In particular my project focused on the synthesis of manganese organometallic complexes with N-heterocyclic carbene ligands (NHC). The choice of ligands was carried out to have NHC chelating ligands of the class of MIC (mesoionic carbene). These ligands are synthesized by cycloaddition between alkyl and azide with a copper-catalyzed reaction (CuAAC) and N-alkylation in order to obtain MIC after deprotonation. The study of these manganese-based complexes is still in its infancy today, NHC ligands are widely used thanks to the possibility of varying their steric and electronic properties and the possibility of forming strong bonds with almost all metals. The choice of manganese was made because is an abundant, low-toxic and inexpensive element.

The effect of S,S-ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid (edds) on the quenching of metal-catalyzed (metal = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) oxidation of ascorbic acid was tested in vitro via oxidation of the fluorescent probe 1,2,3-dihydrorhodamine dihydrochloride. The pro-oxidant activity of iron was not fully suppressed, even at a four-fold molar excess of the ligand. The effect of serum on the toxicity to peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and K562 cells was investigated. The cytotoxic effect of Fe-edds was abrogated in the presence of Trolox or serum proteins. The probable pathways of cell toxicity were investigated through blocking of the monocarboxylate transporters (MCT) in association with cell cycle studies by flow cytometry. Cells treated with metal complexes and alpha-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid, a known MCT inhibitor, showed recovery of viability, suggesting that MCT proteins may be involved in the internalization of metal-edds complexes. The free acid induced cell cycle arrest in G0/G1 (PBMC) and S (K562) phases, suggesting direct DNA damage or interference in DNA replication.

The synthesis, spectroscopy, and electrochemistry of the acyclic tertiary tetraamine copper(II) complex [CuL(1)](ClO4)(2) (L(1) = N,N-bis(2'-(dimethylamino)ethyl)-N,N'-dimethylpropane-1,3-diamine) is reported. The X-ray crystal structure of [CuL(1)(OClO3)(2)] reveals a tetragonally elongated CuN4O2 coordination sphere, exhibiting relatively long Cu-N bond lengths for a Cu-II tetraamine, and a small tetrahedral distortion of the CuN4 plane. The [CuL(1)](2+) ion displays a single, reversible, one-electron reduction at -0.06 V vs Ag/AgCl. The results presented herein illustrate the inherent difficulties associated with the separation and characterization of Cu-II complexes of tertiary tetraamines, and some previously incorrect assertions and unexplained observations of other workers are discussed.

A series of new ruthenium(II) complexes of the general formula [Ru(eta(5)-C5H5)(PP)(L)][PF6] (PP = DPPE or 2PPh(3), L = 4-butoxybenzonitrile or N-(3-cyanophenyl)formamide) and the binuclear iron(II) complex [Fe(eta(5)-C5H5)(PP)(mu-L)(PP)(eta(5)-C5H5)Fe][PF6](2) (L = (E)-2-(3-(4-nitrophenyl)allylidene)malononitrile, that has been also newly synthesized) have been prepared and studied to evaluate their potential in the second harmonic generation property. All the new compounds were fully characterized by NMR, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopies and their electrochemistry behaviour was studied by cyclic voltammetry. Quadratic hyperpolarizabilities (beta) of three of the complexes have been determined by hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) measurements at fundamental wavelength of 1500 nm and the calculated static beta(0) values are found to fall in the range 65-212 x 10(-30) esu. Compound presenting beta(0) = 212 x 10(-30) esu has revealed to be 1.2 times more efficient than urea standard in the second harmonic generation (SHG) property, measured in the solid state by Kurtz powder technique, using a Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm). New rhenium(VII or III) complexes [ReO3(PTA)(2)][ReO4] (1) (PTA = 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane), [ReO3(mPTA)][ReO4] (2) (mPTA = N-methyl-1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane cation), [ReO3(HMT)(2)] [ReO4] (3) (HMT = hexamethylenetetramine), [ReO3(eta(2)-Tpm)(PTA)][ReO4] (4) [Tpm = hydrotris(pyrazol-1-yl)methane, HC(pz)(3), pz = pyrazolyl), [ReO3(Hpz)(HMT)][ReO4] (5) (Hpz = pyrazole), [ReO(Tpms)(HMT)] (6) [Tpms = tris(pyrazol-1-yl)methanesulfonate, O3SC(pz)(3)(-)] and [ReCl2{N2C(O)Ph} (PTA)(3)] (7) have been prepared from the Re(VII) oxide Re2O2 (1-6) or, in the case of 7, by ligand exchange from the benzoyldiazenido complex [ReCl2(N2C-(O)Ph}(Hpz)(PPh3)(2)], and characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopies, elemental analysis and electrochemical properties. Theoretical calculations at the density functional theory (DFT) level of theory indicated that the coordination of PTA to both Re(III) and Re(VII) centers by the P atom is preferable compared to the coordination by the N atom. This is interpreted in terms of the Re-PTA bond energy and hard-soft acid-base theory. The oxo-rhenium complexes 1-6 act as selective catalysts for the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclic and linear ketones (e.g., 2-methylcyclohexanone, 2-methylcyclopentanone, cyclohexanone, cyclopentanone, cyclobutanone, and 3,3-dimethyl-2-butanone or pinacolone) to the corresponding lactones or esters, in the presence of aqueous H2O2. The effects of a variety of factors are studied toward the optimization of the process.

Treatment of a dichloromethane solution of trans-[Mo(NCN){NCNC(O)R}(dppe)(2)]Cl [R = Me (1a), Et (1b)] (dppe = Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2) with HBF4, [Et3O][BF4] or EtC(O)Cl gives trans-[Mo(NCN)Cl-(dppe)(2)]X [X = BF4 (2a) or Cl (2b)] and the corresponding acylcyanamides NCN(R')C(O)Et (R' = H, Et or C(O)Et). X-ray diffraction analysis of 2a (X = BF4) reveals a multiple-bond coordination of the cyanoimide ligand. Compounds 1 convert to the bis(cyanoimide) trans-[Mo(NCN)(2)(dppe)(2)] complex upon reaction with an excess of NaOMe (with formation of the respective ester). In an aprotic medium and at a Pt electrode, compounds 1 (R = Me, Et or Ph) undergo a cathodically induced isomerization. Full quantitative kinetic analysis of the voltammetric behaviour is presented and allows the determination of the first-order rate constants and the equilibrium constant of the trans to cis isomerization reaction. The mechanisms of electrophilic addition (protonation) to complexes 1 and the precursor trans[Mo(NCN)(2)(dppe)(2)], as well as the electronic structures, nature of the coordination bonds and electrochemical behaviour of these species are investigated in detail by theoretical methods which indicate that the most probable sites of the proton attack are the oxygen atom of the acyl group and the terminal nitrogen atom, respectively.

Four new compounds with the general formula [Fe(phen)3][Zn(RSO2N=CS2)2], where phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, R = 4-FC6H4 (1), 4-ClC6H4 (2), 4-BrC6H4 (3) and 4-IC6H4 (4), respectively, were obtained by the reaction of the appropriate potassium N-R-sulfonyldithiocarbimate (RSO2N=CS2K2) and tris(1,10-phenanthroline)iron(II) sulfate, with zinc(II) acetate dihydrate in dimethylformamide. The elemental analyses and the IR data were consistent with the formation of the expected complexes salts. The ¹H and 13C NMR spectra showed the signals for the cationic iron(II) complex and dithiocarbimate moieties. The molar conductance data were consistent with the 1:1 cation:anion complexes in 1-4. The antifungal activities of the compounds were tested in vitro against Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides.

Kevlar [poly (p-phenilylene terephtalamide)], was used as a precursor in the preparation of activated carbon fibers. For this intention, physical and chemical activations were carried out. Activated fibers were physically prepared from the carbonization of the Kevlar and its later activation with CO2 and steam of water, by the other hand; the chemically activated fibers were obtained by means of the impregnation of the material with phosphoric acid and their later carbonization. Different conditions were used and preliminary analyses of the precursor were taken into account (TGA-DTA / IR). The resulting fibers were characterized by N2 (77K) adsorption, infrared spectroscopy, SEM, and immersion calorimetry. Yields and Burn off were also evaluated. The results shows that if you want to synthesize activated carbon fibers from Kevlar strong conditions respect to the commonly used such as water steam, high phosphoric acid concentrations and methods of impregnation are the ones who allows the development of optimal surface areas and pore volumes.
