Lung cancer is the most common of malignant tumors, with 1.59 million new cases worldwide in 2012. Early detection is the main factor to determine the survival of patients affected by this disease. Furthermore, the correct classification is important to define the most appropriate therapeutic approach as well as suggest the prognosis and the clinical disease evolution. Among the exams used to detect lung cancer, computed tomography have been the most indicated. However, CT images are naturally complex and even experts medical are subject to fault detection or classification. In order to assist the detection of malignant tumors, computer-aided diagnosis systems have been developed to aid reduce the amount of false positives biopsies. In this work it was developed an automatic classification system of pulmonary nodules on CT images by using Artificial Neural Networks. Morphological, texture and intensity attributes were extracted from lung nodules cut tomographic images using elliptical regions of interest that they were subsequently segmented by Otsu method. These features were selected through statistical tests that compare populations (T test of Student and U test of Mann-Whitney); from which it originated a ranking. The features after selected, were inserted in Artificial Neural Networks (backpropagation) to compose two types of classification; one to classify nodules in malignant and benign (network 1); and another to classify two types of malignancies (network 2); featuring a cascade classifier. The best networks were associated and its performance was measured by the area under the ROC curve, where the network 1 and network 2 achieved performance equal to 0.901 and 0.892 respectively.

This master dissertation presents the study and implementation of inteligent algorithms to monitor the measurement of sensors involved in natural gas custody transfer processes. To create these algoritmhs Artificial Neural Networks are investigated because they have some particular properties, such as: learning, adaptation, prediction. A neural predictor is developed to reproduce the sensor output dynamic behavior, in such a way that its output is compared to the real sensor output. A recurrent neural network is used for this purpose, because of its ability to deal with dynamic information. The real sensor output and the estimated predictor output work as the basis for the creation of possible sensor fault detection and diagnosis strategies. Two competitive neural network architectures are investigated and their capabilities are used to classify different kinds of faults. The dissertation starts by providing a description of the phenomena related to the increasing importance recently acquired by satellite applications. The spread of such technology comes with implications, such as an increase in maintenance cost, from which derives the interest in developing advanced techniques that favor an augmented autonomy of spacecrafts in health monitoring. Machine learning techniques are widely employed to lay a foundation for effective systems specialized in fault detection by examining telemetry data. Telemetry consists of a considerable amount of information; therefore, the adopted algorithms must be able to handle multivariate data while facing the limitations imposed by on-board hardware features. In the framework of outlier detection, the dissertation addresses the topic of unsupervised machine learning methods. In the unsupervised scenario, lack of prior knowledge of the data behavior is assumed. In the specific, two models are brought to attention, namely Local Outlier Factor and One-Class Support Vector Machines. Their performances are compared in terms of both the achieved prediction accuracy and the equivalent computational cost. Both models are trained and tested upon the same sets of time series data in a variety of settings, finalized at gaining insights on the effect of the increase in dimensionality. The obtained results allow to claim that both models, combined with a proper tuning of their characteristic parameters, successfully comply with the role of outlier detectors in multivariate time series data. Nevertheless, under this specific context, Local Outlier Factor results to be outperforming One-Class SVM, in that it proves to be more stable over a wider range of input parameter values. This property is especially valuable in unsupervised learning since it suggests that the model is keen to adapting to unforeseen patterns.

Industrial companies, particularly those with induction motors and gearboxes as integral components of their systems, are utilizing Condition Monitoring (CM) systems more frequently in order to discover the need for maintenance in advance, as traditional maintenance only performs tasks when a failure has been identified. Utilizing a CM system is essential to boost productivity and minimize long-term failures that result in financial loss. The more exact and practical the CM system, the better the data analysis, which adds to a more precise maintenance forecast. This thesis project is a cooperation with PEI Vibration Monitoring s.r.l. to design and construct a low-cost vibrational condition monitoring system to check the health of induction motors and gearboxes automatically. Moreover, according to the company's request, such a system should have specs comparable to NI 9234, one of the company's standard Data Acquisition (DAQ) boards, but at a significantly cheaper price. Additionally, PEI VM Company has supplied all hardware and electronic components. The suggested CM system is capable of highprecision autonomous monitoring of induction motors and gearboxes, and it consists of a Raspberry Pi 3B and MCC 172 DAQ board.

In recent years, reversible logic has emerged as one of the most important approaches for power optimization with its application in low power CMOS, quantum computing and nanotechnology. Low power circuits implemented using reversible logic that provides single error correction – double error detection (SEC-DED) is proposed in this paper. The design is done using a new 4 x 4 reversible gate called ‘HCG’ for implementing hamming error coding and detection circuits. A parity preserving HCG (PPHCG) that preserves the input parity at the output bits is used for achieving fault tolerance for the hamming error coding and detection circuits.

Future extreme-scale high-performance computing systems will be required to work under frequent component failures. The MPI Forum's User Level Failure Mitigation proposal has introduced an operation, MPI_Comm_shrink, to synchronize the alive processes on the list of failed processes, so that applications can continue to execute even in the presence of failures by adopting algorithm-based fault tolerance techniques. This MPI_Comm_shrink operation requires a fault tolerant failure detection and consensus algorithm. This paper presents and compares two novel failure detection and consensus algorithms. The proposed algorithms are based on Gossip protocols and are inherently fault-tolerant and scalable. The proposed algorithms were implemented and tested using the Extreme-scale Simulator. The results show that in both algorithms the number of Gossip cycles to achieve global consensus scales logarithmically with system size. The second algorithm also shows better scalability in terms of memory and network bandwidth usage and a perfect synchronization in achieving global consensus.

Reliability of power converters is of crucial importance in switched reluctance motor drives used for safety-critical applications. Open-circuit faults in power converters will cause the motor to run in unbalanced states, and if left untreated, they will lead to damage to the motor and power modules, and even cause a catastrophic failure of the whole drive system. This study is focused on using a single current sensor to detect open-circuit faults accurately. An asymmetrical half-bridge converter is considered in this study and the faults of single-phase open and two-phase open are analysed. Three different bus positions are defined. On the basis of a fast Fourier transform algorithm with Blackman window interpolation, the bus current spectrums before and after open-circuit faults are analysed in details. Their fault characteristics are extracted accurately by the normalisations of the phase fundamental frequency component and double phase fundamental frequency component, and the fault characteristics of the three bus detection schemes are also compared. The open-circuit faults can be located by finding the relationship between the bus current and rotor position. The effectiveness of the proposed diagnosis method is validated by the simulation results and experimental tests.

This paper discusses a multi-layer feedforward (MLF) neural network incident detection model that was developed and evaluated using field data. In contrast to published neural network incident detection models which relied on simulated or limited field data for model development and testing, the model described in this paper was trained and tested on a real-world data set of 100 incidents. The model uses speed, flow and occupancy data measured at dual stations, averaged across all lanes and only from time interval t. The off-line performance of the model is reported under both incident and non-incident conditions. The incident detection performance of the model is reported based on a validation-test data set of 40 incidents that were independent of the 60 incidents used for training. The false alarm rates of the model are evaluated based on non-incident data that were collected from a freeway section which was video-taped for a period of 33 days. A comparative evaluation between the neural network model and the incident detection model in operation on Melbourne's freeways is also presented. The results of the comparative performance evaluation clearly demonstrate the substantial improvement in incident detection performance obtained by the neural network model. The paper also presents additional results that demonstrate how improvements in model performance can be achieved using variable decision thresholds. Finally, the model's fault-tolerance under conditions of corrupt or missing data is investigated and the impact of loop detector failure/malfunction on the performance of the trained model is evaluated and discussed. The results presented in this paper provide a comprehensive evaluation of the developed model and confirm that neural network models can provide fast and reliable incident detection on freeways. To increase the amount of logic available to the users in SRAM-based FPGAs, manufacturers are using nanometric technologies to boost logic density and reduce costs, making its use more attractive. However, these technological improvements also make FPGAs particularly vulnerable to configuration memory bit-flips caused by power fluctuations, strong electromagnetic fields and radiation. This issue is particularly sensitive because of the increasing amount of configuration memory cells needed to define their functionality. A short survey of the most recent publications is presented to support the options assumed during the definition of a framework for implementing circuits immune to bit-flips induction mechanisms in memory cells, based on a customized redundant infrastructure and on a detection-and-fix controller.

Les changements sont faits de façon continue dans le code source des logiciels pour prendre en compte les besoins des clients et corriger les fautes. Les changements continus peuvent conduire aux défauts de code et de conception. Les défauts de conception sont des mauvaises solutions à des problèmes récurrents de conception ou d’implémentation, généralement dans le développement orienté objet. Au cours des activités de compréhension et de changement et en raison du temps d’accès au marché, du manque de compréhension, et de leur expérience, les développeurs ne peuvent pas toujours suivre les normes de conception et les techniques de codage comme les patrons de conception. Par conséquent, ils introduisent des défauts de conception dans leurs systèmes. Dans la littérature, plusieurs auteurs ont fait valoir que les défauts de conception rendent les systèmes orientés objet plus difficile à comprendre, plus sujets aux fautes, et plus difficiles à changer que les systèmes sans les défauts de conception. Pourtant, seulement quelques-uns de ces auteurs ont fait une étude empirique sur l’impact des défauts de conception sur la compréhension et aucun d’entre eux n’a étudié l’impact des défauts de conception sur l’effort des développeurs pour corriger les fautes. Dans cette thèse, nous proposons trois principales contributions. La première contribution est une étude empirique pour apporter des preuves de l’impact des défauts de conception sur la compréhension et le changement. Nous concevons et effectuons deux expériences avec 59 sujets, afin d’évaluer l’impact de la composition de deux occurrences de Blob ou deux occurrences de spaghetti code sur la performance des développeurs effectuant des tâches de compréhension et de changement. Nous mesurons la performance des développeurs en utilisant: (1) l’indice de charge de travail de la NASA pour leurs efforts, (2) le temps qu’ils ont passé dans l’accomplissement de leurs tâches, et (3) les pourcentages de bonnes réponses. Les résultats des deux expériences ont montré que deux occurrences de Blob ou de spaghetti code sont un obstacle significatif pour la performance des développeurs lors de tâches de compréhension et de changement. Les résultats obtenus justifient les recherches antérieures sur la spécification et la détection des défauts de conception. Les équipes de développement de logiciels doivent mettre en garde les développeurs contre le nombre élevé d’occurrences de défauts de conception et recommander des refactorisations à chaque étape du processus de développement pour supprimer ces défauts de conception quand c’est possible. Dans la deuxième contribution, nous étudions la relation entre les défauts de conception et les fautes. Nous étudions l’impact de la présence des défauts de conception sur l’effort nécessaire pour corriger les fautes. Nous mesurons l’effort pour corriger les fautes à l’aide de trois indicateurs: (1) la durée de la période de correction, (2) le nombre de champs et méthodes touchés par la correction des fautes et (3) l’entropie des corrections de fautes dans le code-source. Nous menons une étude empirique avec 12 défauts de conception détectés dans 54 versions de quatre systèmes: ArgoUML, Eclipse, Mylyn, et Rhino. Nos résultats ont montré que la durée de la période de correction est plus longue pour les fautes impliquant des classes avec des défauts de conception. En outre, la correction des fautes dans les classes avec des défauts de conception fait changer plus de fichiers, plus les champs et des méthodes. Nous avons également observé que, après la correction d’une faute, le nombre d’occurrences de défauts de conception dans les classes impliquées dans la correction de la faute diminue. Comprendre l’impact des défauts de conception sur l’effort des développeurs pour corriger les fautes est important afin d’aider les équipes de développement pour mieux évaluer et prévoir l’impact de leurs décisions de conception et donc canaliser leurs efforts pour améliorer la qualité de leurs systèmes. Les équipes de développement doivent contrôler et supprimer les défauts de conception de leurs systèmes car ils sont susceptibles d’augmenter les efforts de changement. La troisième contribution concerne la détection des défauts de conception. Pendant les activités de maintenance, il est important de disposer d’un outil capable de détecter les défauts de conception de façon incrémentale et itérative. Ce processus de détection incrémentale et itérative pourrait réduire les coûts, les efforts et les ressources en permettant aux praticiens d’identifier et de prendre en compte les occurrences de défauts de conception comme ils les trouvent lors de la compréhension et des changements. Les chercheurs ont proposé des approches pour détecter les occurrences de défauts de conception, mais ces approches ont actuellement quatre limites: (1) elles nécessitent une connaissance approfondie des défauts de conception, (2) elles ont une précision et un rappel limités, (3) elles ne sont pas itératives et incrémentales et (4) elles ne peuvent pas être appliquées sur des sous-ensembles de systèmes. Pour surmonter ces limitations, nous introduisons SMURF, une nouvelle approche pour détecter les défauts de conception, basé sur une technique d’apprentissage automatique — machines à vecteur de support — et prenant en compte les retours des praticiens. Grâce à une étude empirique portant sur trois systèmes et quatre défauts de conception, nous avons montré que la précision et le rappel de SMURF sont supérieurs à ceux de DETEX et BDTEX lors de la détection des occurrences de défauts de conception. Nous avons également montré que SMURF peut être appliqué à la fois dans les configurations intra-système et inter-système. Enfin, nous avons montré que la précision et le rappel de SMURF sont améliorés quand on prend en compte les retours des praticiens.

In high speed manufacturing systems, continuous operation is desirable, with minimal disruption for repairs and service. An intelligent diagnostic monitoring system, designed to detect developing faults before catastrophic failure, or prior to undesirable reduction in output quality, is a good means of achieving this. Artificial neural networks have already been found to be of value in fault diagnosis of machinery. The aim here is to provide a system capable of detecting a number of faults, in order that maintenance can be scheduled in advance of sudden failure, and to reduce the necessity to replace parts at intervals based on mean time between failures. Instead, parts will need to be replaced only when necessary. Analysis of control information in the form of position error data from two servomotors is described.

The main objective involved with this paper consists of presenting the results obtained from the application of artificial neural networks and statistical tools in the automatic identification and classification process of faults in electric power distribution systems. The developed techniques to treat the proposed problem have used, in an integrated way, several approaches that can contribute to the successful detection process of faults, aiming that it is carried out in a reliable and safe way. The compilations of the results obtained from practical experiments accomplished in a pilot radial distribution feeder have demonstrated that the developed techniques provide accurate results, identifying and classifying efficiently the several occurrences of faults observed in the feeder.

Nowadays there is great interest in structural damage detection in systems using nondestructive tests. Once the failure is detected, as for instance a crack, it is possible to take providences. There are several different approaches that can be used to obtain information about the existence, location and extension of the fault in the system by non-destructive tests. Among these methodologies, one can mention different optimization techniques, as for instance classical methods, genetic algorithms, neural networks, etc. Most of these techniques, which are based on element-byelement adjustments of a finite element (FE) model, take advantage of the dynamic behavior of the model. However, in practical situations, usually, is almost impossible to obtain an accuracy model. In this paper, it is proposed an experimental technique for damage location. This technique is based on H: norm to obtain the damage location. The dynamic properties of the structure were identified using experimental data by eigensystem realization algorithm (ERA). The experimental test was carried out in a beam structure through varying the mass of an element. For the output signal was used a piezoelectric sensor. The signal of input of sine form was generated through SignalCalc® software.
