A qualitative analysis of the expected dilatation strain field in the vicinity of an array of grain-boundary (GB) dislocations is presented. The analysis provides a basis for the prediction of the critical current densities (jc) across low-angle YBa2Cu3O7- (YBCO) GBs as a function of their energy. The introduction of the GB energy allows the extension of the analysis to high-angle GBs using established models which predict the GB energy as a function of misorientation angle. The results are compared to published data for jc across [001]-tilt YBCO GBs for the full range of misorientations, showing a good fit. Since the GB energy is directly related to the GB structure, the analysis may allow a generalization of the scaling behavior of jc with the GB energy. © 1995 The American Physical Society.

The microstructure of an artificial grain boundary in an YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) thin film grown on a (100)(110), [001]-tilt yttria-stabilized-zirconia (YSZ) bicrystal substrate has been studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The orientation relationship between the YBCO film and the YSZ substrate was [001]YBCO∥[001]YSZ and [110]YBCO∥[100]YSZ for each half of the bicrystal film. However, the exact boundary geometry of the bicrystal substrate was not transferred to the film. The substrate boundary was straight while the film boundary was wavy. In several cases there was bending of the lattice confined within a distance of a few basal-plane lattice spacings from the boundary plane and microfaceting. No intergranular secondary phase was observed but about 25% of the boundary was covered by c-axis-tilted YBCO grains and a-axis-oriented grains, both of which were typically adjacent to CuO grains or surrounded by a thin Cu-rich amorphous layer.

The microstructure of artificial grain boundaries in YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) thin films grown on [001] tilt YZrO2 (YSZ) bicrystal substrates has been characterized using transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Despite a relatively straight morphology of the substrate boundaries, the film boundaries were wavy. The waviness was a result of the combined effects of grooving at the substrate boundaries prior to the film deposition and an island-growth mechanism for YBCO on YSZ substrates. The dihedral angle of the groove walls varied with the misorientation angle and depended on the symmetry of the substrate boundary. The amplitudes of the film boundary waviness compared well with the widths of the grooves. In addition, the grooves induced local bending of the YBCO lattice planes and additional tilt components perpendicular to the c-axis close to the film boundaries. © 1995.

Non-periodic structural variation has been found in the high Tc cuprates, YBa2Cu3O7-x and Hg0.67Pb0.33Ba2Ca2Cu 3O8+δ, by image analysis of high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) images. We use two methods for analysis of the HRTEM images. The first method is a means for measuring the bending of lattice fringes at twin planes. The second method is a low-pass filter technique which enhances information contained by diffuse-scattered electrons and reveals what appears to be an interference effect between domains of differing lattice parameter in the top and bottom of the thin foil. We believe that these methods of image analysis could be usefully applied to the many thousands of HRTEM images that have been collected by other workers in the high temperature superconductor field. This work provides direct structural evidence for phase separation in high Tc cuprates, and gives support to recent stripes models that have been proposed to explain various angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance data. We believe that the structural variation is a response to an opening of an electronic solubility gap where holes are not uniformly distributed in the material but are confined to metallic stripes. Optimum doping may occur as a consequence of the diffuse boundaries between stripes which arise from spinodal decomposition. Theoretical ideas about the high Tc cuprates which treat the cuprates as homogeneous may need to be modified in order to take account of this type of structural variation.

c-axis-oriented YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) thin films were laser deposited on (001) yttria-stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) substrates with different surface morphologies. The in-plane orientation of the films on smooth substrates was sensitive to the deposition conditions, often resulting in mixed orientations. However, a strongly dominating [110] YBCO//[110]YSZ orientation was obtained at a deposition temperature of 770°C. Films on substrates with surface steps, induced by depositing a homoepitaxial buffer layer or by thermally annealing the substrate, had a [110]YBCO//[100]YSZ orientation when deposited at the same temperature. It was concluded that the [110]YBCO//[100] YSZ orientation was promoted by a graphoepitaxial mechanism. Films prepared under identical conditions on smooth and stepped substrates grew with extended c axes on the former. It is proposed that the extension can be induced by disorder, invoked by a low oxygen pressure and a low density of adsorption sites. The disorder may be eliminated by either an increase of the oxygen pressure or an increase of the density of adsorption sites in the form of steps. The film microstructure influenced the microwave surface resistance, which was similar for films with one exclusive in-plane orientation and higher for films with mixed orientations. The films on the stepped surfaces had superior superconducting properties; inductive measurements gave a Tc onset of 88 K, a ΔT(90%-10%) c of 0.2 K, and the transport jc was 1.5×106 A/cm2 at 83 K, for films on substrates with homoepitaxial buffer layers.

Samples of YBa2Cu3O7-y+20 mol% Y2BaCuO5, with thicknesses ranging between 50-250 μm, have been melt processed and rapidly quenched from temperatures between 985 and 1100°C by immersing them in liquid nitrogen. The phase composition and microstructures of these samples have been characterised using a combination of X-ray diffractometry, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The quenched melt of samples quenched from temperatures greater than 985°C appears relatively homogeneous but consists of Ba2Cu3Ox (BC1.5) and BaCu2O2 (BC2) regions. At about 985°C, BaCuO2 (BC1) crystallises from the melt and most of the BC1.5 decomposes into BC1 and CuO or into BC1 and BC2. The crystallisation of BC1 induces segregation of elements in the melt and this is very significant for the melt texturing of YBCO.

High-quality epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) thin films were achieved by a modified off-axis sputtering technique with high deposition rates (3.3 nm/min). The film quality and the deposition rate depended crucially on the target-to-substrate separation. Epitaxial YBCO/NdGaO3(NGO)/YBCO trilayers were successfully grown onto SrTiO3, Y-ZrO2, and LaAlO3 substrates by dc and rf sputtering. The epitaxial relations were found to be [001] YBCO//[001]NGO, [100]YBCO, or [010] YBCO//[110]NGO and [001]YBCO//[110] NGO, [100]YBCO, or [010]YBCO//[001] NGO, where the latter orientation relationship was dominating. Subsequent top YBCO layers grew c axis oriented independently of the two epitaxial orientations of the NGO. The orientation relationships between YBCO and NGO were the same. Auger electron depth profiles and transmission electron microscopy indicated that the interdiffusion at the interface between the YBCO and NGO layers was not strong even at 740°C. The superconducting transition temperatures of the top and bottom YBCO layers were about the same as that of YBCO single layers, i.e., 87-90 K. Scanning electron microscopy of the surface morphologies of the YBCO and the NGO showed that a smaller substrate-target distance resulted in smoother films.

Effect of disorder on the electrical resistance near the superconducting transition temperature in the paracoherence region of high temperature YBa2CU3O7-delta (YBCO) thin film superconductor is reported. For this, c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films having superconducting transition width varying between 0.27 K and 6 K were deposited using laser ablation and high pressure oxygen sputtering techniques. Disorder in these films was further created by using 100 MeV oxygen and 200 MeV silver ions with varying fluences. It is observed that the critical exponent in the paracoherence region for films with high transition temperature and small transition width is in agreement with the theoretically predicted value (gamma = 1.33) and is not affected by disorder, while for films with lower transition temperature and larger transition width the value of exponent is much larger as compared to that theoretically predicted and it varies from sample to sample and usually changes with disorder induced by radiation. This difference in the behaviour of the exponent has been explained on the basis of differences in the strength of weak links and the transition between temperatures T. and T, is interpreted as a percolation like transition with disorder. Summary form only given. The authors have developed a controllable HTSC (high-temperature superconductor) weak-link fabrication process for producing weak links from the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO), using PrBa2Cu3O7-x (PBCO) as a lattice-matched semiconducting barrier layer. The devices obtained show current-voltage characteristics similar to those observed for low-temperature superconductor/normal-metal/superconductor (SNS) devices. The authors found good scaling of the critical currents Ic with area, A, and scaling of the resistances Rj with 1/A; the typical values of the IcRj product of 3.5 mV are consistent with traditional SNS behavior. The authors observed Shapiro steps in response to 100-GHz millimeter-wave radiation and oscillation of the DC supercurrent in a transverse magnetic field, thus demonstrating that both the AC and DC Josephson effects occur in these devices.

Epitaxial LaNiO3(LNO) thin films on LaAlO3(LAO), SrTiO3(STO), and YSZ are grown by pulsed laser deposition method at 350 mTorr oxygen partial pressure and 700 °C substrate temperature. As‐deposited LNO films are metallic down to 10 K. c‐axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) films were grown on LNO/LAO as well as LNO/STO surfaces without affecting superconducting transition temperature of YBCO. Textured LNO thin films were grown on c‐axis oriented YBCO/STO and YBCO/YSZ . Transport measurements of these bilayer films showed that LNO is a good metallic contact material for YBCO.

Critical exponent of the electrical conductivity in the paracoherence region (gamma) of the high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) has been estimated for high quality thin film on ZrO2 substrate prepared by high pressure oxygen sputtering. High energy ion irradiation was carried out using 100 MeV O-16(7+) ions at liquid nitrogen to see the effects of disorder on the value of the exponent. The critical exponent from a value of about 2 to 1.62 upon irradiation. Studies were also carried film to see the effect of ageing and annealing.

Epitaxial LaNiO3 metallic oxide thin films have been grown on c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films on LaAlO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique and the interface formed between the two films has been examined by measuring the contact conductance of the same. The specific contact conductance of the interface measured using a modified four probe method was found to be 1.4 to 6 x 10(4) ohm(-1) cm(-2) at 77 K, There are indications that contact conductance can be brought closer to that obtained for noble metal-YBCO interface.

We investigate the influence of the ferromagnetic layer on the magnetic and transport properties of YBa2Cu3O7-delta in YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO)/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) bilayers. The temperature dependent dc magnetization study reveals the presence of magnetic anisotropy in YBCO/LSMO bilayer as compared to the pure YBCO layer. The ac susceptibility study on YBCO/LSMO bilayers reveals stronger pinning and the temperature dependent critical current is found to be less prone to temperature. Besides, the current (I) dependent electrical transport studies on YBCO/LSMO exhibit a significant reduction in the superconducting T-c with increase in I and it follows I-2/3 dependence in accord with the pair breaking effect. The higher reduction of superconducting T-c in YBCO/LSMO is believed to be due to the enhanced pair-breaking induced by the spin polarized carriers being injected into the superconductor. A distinctive characteristic of silver in oxygen incorporation of oxide thin films during pulsed laser ablation has been discovered. Optical emission spectroscopy studies of laser-induced plume of Ag-target indicates the presence of AgO species whose concentration increases with an increase in oxygen partial pressure. The formation of AgO in laser-plume has been found to be very useful for the realization of high temperature superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) and giant magnetoresistive La0.7MnO3-delta (LMO) thin films with dramatically superior quality if the target materials contained a small amount of silver. The improvement in the quality of these films is brought about by the supply of atomic oxygen to oxide lattices during their formation. This becomes possible due to the fact that Ag, after it is ablated with other constituent materials in the target, gets moderately oxidized in an oxygen atmosphere and the oxidized species dissociate back into Ag and nascent O at the substrate surface. The nascent oxygen is very highly reactive and is easily assimilated into the lattice of these compounds. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Thin films of Bi2VO5.5 (BVO), a vanadium analog of the n = I member of the Aurivillius family, have been prepared by pulsed laser deposition. The BVO films grow along the [001] direction on LaNiO3(LNO) and YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) electrode buffer layers on LaA- IO3(LAO) substrates as obtained from X-ray diffraction studies. The microstructure of the films and of the interfaces within the film and between the film and the substrate were characterized using transmission electron microscopy. The in-plane epitaxial relationship of the rhombohedral LNO on perovskite LAO was [100] LNO // [100] LAO and [001] LNO // [001] LAO. High resolution lattice images showed a sharp interface between LNO and LAO. However, the LNO film is twinned with a preferred orientation along the growth direction. The BVO layer is single crystalline on both LNO/LAO and YBCO/LAO with the caxis parallel to the growth direction except for a thin layer of about 400 Å at the interface which is polycrystalline.
