La Universitat de Vic disposa, entre altres equips, d’una cèl·lula flexible de fabricació, del fabricant Festo, que simula un procés de formació de palets amb els productes que es disposen en un magatzem intermedi. Aquesta cèl·lula està composta de quatre estacions de muntatge diferenciades (càrrega de palets, càrrega de plaques, magatzem intermedi i transport). Cada una disposa d'un PLC SIEMENS S7-300 per la seva automatització, i tots aquests es troben interconnectats amb una xarxa industrial Profibus. L'objectiu d'aquest projecte és implantar el sistema SCADA Vijeo Citect pel control i supervisió de l'estació magatzem d'aquesta cèl·lula flexible de fabricació, establint també un intercanvi de dades entre l'SCADA i el Microsoft Access, per poder ser utilitzat per la docència. Aquest projecte s'ha desenvolupat en cinc fases diferents: 1. La primera fase s'ha dedicat a l'automatització pròpiament de l'estació magatzem a partir de l'autòmat programable Siemens S7-300 i complint amb les necessitats plantejades. 2. En la segona fase s'ha programat i establert la comunicació per l'intercanvi de dades (lectura i escriptura) entre el sistema SCADA Vijeo Citect i la base de dades de Microsoft Access. 3. En la tercera fase s'ha elaborat i programat l'entorn gràfic de supervisió i control del procés a partir del sistema SCADA Vijeo Citect. 4. En la quarta fase s'ha instal·lat un OPC Server en el PC i s'ha establert la comunicació entre el PLC i el sistema SCADA. 5. Finalment s'ha anat revisant i depurant les diferents programacions i comunicacions per tal de que el sistema funcioni com a un conjunt.

The Iowa State Highway Commission initiated this research to evaluate a new lowering device for tower luminaires and a new concept of tower luminaire light distribution. Lighting at the West interchange of I-80, I-35, and I-235 in Polk County was also designated as an FHWA experimental project. As highway lighting has become more widely used, highway officials recognized the increasing importance of reducing safety hazards and improving aesthetic appearance of lighting installations. Also, lighting construction, energy, and maintenance costs were absorbing a larger share of the maintenance budget. A search began for a method of lighting whereby the fixed objects by the roadside could be eliminated or reduced in number, the costs could be reduced and the quality of lighting improved over existing methods. Lack of design data in this area illustrated the need for research.

This report summarizes the analysis of transverse cracking in asphalt pavement by a five state study team from Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Oklahoma. The study was initiated under the sponsorship of the Federal Highway Administration and four evaluation conferences were held during the course of the study. Each state conducted a crack inventory on their asphalt pavement. An effort was made to correlate this inventory with numerous factors that were considered to be pertinent to the cracking problem. One state did indicate that there was a correlation between transverse cracking severity and the subsurface geology. The other states were unable to identify any significant factors as being the primary contributors. The analysis of the problem was divided into, (1) mix design, (2) maintenance, and (3) 3R rehabilitation. Many potential factors to be considered were identified under each of these three study divisions. There were many conclusions as to good and bad practices. One major conclusions was that a more effective crack maintenance program with early sealing was essential. Some new practices were suggested as potentially more cost effective in design, construction and maintenance. The interchange of methods and procedures by individual states yielded benefits in that other states selected practices that would be an improvement to their program.

This report describes a study to evaluate Geopier® soil reinforcement technology in transportation construction. Three projects requiring settlement control were chosen for evaluation—an embankment foundation, a box culvert, and a bridge approach fill. For each project, construction observations, in situ soil testing, laboratory material characterization, and performance monitoring were carried out. For the embankment foundation project, Geopier elements were installed within and around an abutment footprint for the new I-35 overpass at the US Highway 5/Interstate 35 interchange in Des Moines, Iowa. Although the main focus of this investigation was to evaluate embankment foundation reinforcement using Geopier elements, a stone column reinforced soil provided an opportunity to compare systems. In situ testing included cone penetration tests (CPTs), pressuremeter tests (PMTs), Ko stepped blade tests, and borehole shear tests (BSTs), as well as laboratory material testing. Comparative stiffness and densities of Geopier elements and stone columns were evaluated based on full-scale modulus load tests and standard penetration tests. Vibrating wire settlement cells and total stress cells were installed to monitor settlement and stress concentration on the reinforcing elements and matrix soil. Settlement plates were also monitored by conventional optical survey methods. Results show that the Geopier system and the stone columns performed their intended functions. The second project involved settlement monitoring of a 4.2 m wide x 3.6 m high x 50 m long box culvert constructed beneath a bridge on Iowa Highway 191 south of Neola, Iowa. Geopier elements were installed to reduce total and differential settlement while ensuring the stability of the existing bridge pier foundations. Benefits of the box culvert and embankment fill included (1) ease of future roadway expansion and (2) continual service of the roadway throughout construction. Site investigations consisted of in situ testing including CPTs, PMTs, BSTs, and dilatometer tests. Consolidated drained triaxial compression tests, unconsolidated undrained triaxial compression test, oedometer tests, and Atterberg limit tests were conducted to define strength and consolidation parameters and soil index properties for classification. Vibrating wire settlement cells, total stress cells, and piezometers were installed for continuous monitoring during and after box culvert construction and fill placement. This project was successful at controlling settlement of the box culvert and preventing downdrag of the bridge foundations, but could have been enhanced by reducing the length of Geopier elements at the ends of the box culvert. This would have increased localized settlement while reducing overall differential settlement. The third project involved settlement monitoring of bridge approach fill sections reinforced with Geopier elements. Thirty Geopier elements, spaced 1.8 m apart in six rows of varying length, were installed on both sides of a new bridge on US Highway 18/218 near Charles City, Iowa. Based on the results of this project, it was determined that future applications of Geopier soil reinforcement should consider extending the elements deeper into the embankment foundation fill, not just the fill itself.

The Proposed Action consists of the improvement of Iowa Highway 58 (IA 58) from U.S. Highway 20 (U.S. 20) north to Greenhill Road in Cedar Falls (Black Hawk County, Iowa). The improvement would include limiting at-grade access to IA 58 by adding one or more interchanges to the corridor which would be located at Viking Road, Greenhill Road, and reconfiguring the U.S. 20 interchange (Figure 1). In order to construct these interchanges and associated ramps, the pavement of IA 58 would be reconstructed. In a couple of locations, the alignment of IA 58 would be shifted.

US 151 was originally constructed as IA 149 in 1931-1934 and has been rehabilitated several times. The most recent major improvements, which were completed in 2005-2006, consisted of hot mix asphalt resurfacing and partial shoulder paving. Major widening and resurfacing improvements were also completed in 2007 between Fairfax and US 30 in Cedar Rapids. According to a preliminary 2009 estimate, traffic volumes range from about 5,900 vehicles per day (vpd) north of Amana to about 14,400 vpd at the US 30 interchange in Cedar Rapids. In response to high crash densities and medium to medium-high crash rates along the route, the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) requested a road safety audit to examine the roadway and suggest possible mitigation. Representatives from the Iowa DOT, Federal Highway Administration, Institute for Transportation, local law enforcement, and state government met to review crash data and discuss potential safety improvements to this segment of US 151. This report outlines the findings and recommendations of the road safety audit team for addressing the safety concerns on this roadway.

To address safety concerns on James Avenue NW and 250th Street NW, from the North Corporate Limits (NCL) of Tiffin, north and east to I-380 (at North Liberty), the Johnson County engineer requested a road safety audit (RSA). The audit was conducted on September 1, 2010, through a program supported by the Office of Traffic and Safety at the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT). This road is a seal-coated roadway, about 25-ft wide, but with only about 0-1 ft of earth shoulders. According to 2006 Iowa DOT estimates, traffic volume is about 820 vehicles per day, north from Tiffin to a commercial entrance on 250th Street, then increasing to 2,990 vehicles per day to the on-ramp of Interstate 380 (I-380). Local traffic uses this road as a short-cut to Cedar Rapids, North Liberty, and the I-380/I-80 interchange (to avoid congestion on IA 965). This report outlines the findings and recommendations of the road safety audit team for addressing the safety concerns on this roadway.

Currently there are no guidelines within the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) on construction phasing and maintenance of traffic (MOT) for retrofit construction and maintenance projects involving innovative geometric designs. The research presented in this report addressed this gap in existing knowledge by investigating the state of the practice of construction phasing and MOT for several types of innovative geometric designs including the roundabout, single point urban interchange (SPUI), diverging diamond interchange (DDI), restricted-crossing left turn (RCUT), median U-turn (MUT), and displaced left turn (DLT). This report provides guidelines for transportation practitioners in developing construction phasing and MOT plans for innovative geometric designs. This report includes MOT Phasing Diagrams to assist in the development of MOT strategies for innovative designs. The MOT Phasing Diagrams were developed through a review of literature, survey, interviews with practitioners, and review of plans from innovative geometric design projects. These diagrams are provided as a tool to assist in improving work zone safety and mobility through construction of projects with innovative geometric designs. The aforementioned synthesis of existing knowledge documented existing practices for these types of designs.

In 1957, the Iowa State Highway Commission, with financial assistance from the aluminum industry, constructed a 220-ft (67-m) long, four-span continuous, aluminum girder bridge to carry traffic on Clive Road (86th Street) over Interstate 80 near Des Moines, Iowa. The bridge had four, welded I-shape girders that were fabricated in pairs with welded diaphragms between an exterior and an interior girder. The interior diaphragms between the girder pairs were bolted to girder brackets. A composite, reinforced concrete deck served as the roadway surface. The bridge, which had performed successfully for about 35 years of service, was removed in the fall of 1993 to make way for an interchange at the same location. Prior to the bridge demolition, load tests were conducted to monitor girder and diaphragm bending strains and deflections in the northern end span. Fatigue testing of the aluminum girders that were removed from the end spans were conducted by applying constant-amplitude, cyclic loads. These tests established the fatigue strength of an existing, welded, flange-splice detail and added, welded, flange-cover plates and horizontal web plate attachment details. This part, Part 2, of the final report focuses on the fatigue tests of the aluminum girder sections that were removed from the bridge and on the analysis of the experimental data to establish the fatigue strength of full-size specimens. Seventeen fatigue fractures that were classified as Category E weld details developed in the seven girder test specimens. Linear regression analyses of the fatigue test results established both nominal and experimental stress-range versus load cycle relationships (SN curves) for the fatigue strength of fillet-welded connections. The nominal strength SN curve obtained by this research essentially matched the SN curve for Category E aluminum weldments given in the AASHTO LRFD specifications. All of the Category E fatigue fractures that developed in the girder test specimens satisfied the allowable SN relationship specified by the fatigue provisions of the Aluminum Association. The lower-bound strength line that was set at two standard deviations below the least squares regression line through the fatigue fracture data points related well with the Aluminum Association SN curve. The results from the experimental tests of this research have provided additional information regarding behavioral characteristics of full-size, aluminum members and have confirmed that aluminum has the strength properties needed for highway bridge girders.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää, kuinka globaalin autonvalmistajan toimitusketjua voidaan tehostaa Suomen sisäisten yhteistyökumppaneiden kesken.Tarkoituksena on saada yksittäisten yritysten välisestä yhteistyöstä mahdollisimman paljon synergiaa koko toimitusketjun tehostamiseksi. Tutkimuksessa on käytetty hyväksi alan kirjallisuutta, case- yrityksen tietokantoja ja kerätty aineistoa haastattelemalla toimitusketjussa toimivien yritysten edustajia. Informaatiotekniikan kehitys on ollut runsasta viime vuosikymmenien aikana, mikä on mahdollistanut reaaliaikaisen yhteistyön globaaleissa toimitusketjuissa. Toimivan yhteistyöverkoston edellytyksenä ovat kuitenkin hyvin rakennetut toimintamallit, joissa toimitaan tehokkaasti koko toimitusketjun edun saavuttamiseksi. Tutkimuksen empiirisessä osassa esitellään vaihtoehtoisia toimintamalleja, joilla voidaan lisätä yhteistyötä jokaista osapuolta hyödyttävällä tavalla. Näintoimitusketjusta saadaan karsittua osaoptimointia ja tehotonta toimintaa. Tämänlisäksi annetaan ehdotuksia informaatiotekniikan laajempaan hyväksikäyttöön toimitusketjun eri yritysten välillä.

Although classic bankruptcy problems take into account a single claims vector, Pulido et al. (2008) show that there are real bankruptcy situations where agents face more than one reference vector. In particular, they consider the claims and an additional reference vector. To analyze these situations, they propose the extreme and the diagonal approaches. Nonetheless, the former approach depends on the order of the vectors: if we interchange the claims and the reference vectors, the result changes. Moreover their study is limited to the case in which the reference vector is lower than the claims vector. In the present note, we propose an extension that solves these short- comings by introducing the idea of impartiality. Semantic Web technology is able to provide the required computational semantics for interoperability of learning resources across different Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Learning Object Repositories (LOR). The EU research project LUISA (Learning Content Management System Using Innovative Semantic Web Services Architecture) addresses the development of a reference semantic architecture for the major challenges in the search, interchange and delivery of learning objects in a service-oriented context. One of the key issues, highlighted in this paper, is Digital Rights Management (DRM) interoperability. A Semantic Web approach to copyright management has been followed, which places a Copyright Ontology as the key component for interoperability among existing DRM systems and other licensing schemes like Creative Commons. Moreover, Semantic Web tools like reasoners, rule engines and semantic queries facilitate the implementation of an interoperable copyright management component in the LUISA architecture.

Key management has a fundamental role in secure communications. Designing and testing of key management protocols is tricky. These protocols must work flawlessly despite of any abuse. The main objective of this work was to design and implement a tool that helps to specify the protocol and makes it possible to test the protocol while it is still under development. This tool generates compile-ready java code from a key management protocol model. A modelling method for these protocols, which uses Unified Modeling Language (UML) was also developed. The protocol is modelled, exported as an XMI and read by the code generator tool. The code generator generates java code that is immediately executable with a test software after compilation.

The linking of North and South America by the Isthmus of Panama had major impacts on global climate, oceanic and atmospheric currents, and biodiversity, yet the timing of this critical event remains contentious. The Isthmus is traditionally understood to have fully closed by ca. 3.5 million years ago (Ma), and this date has been used as a benchmark for oceanographic, climatic, and evolutionary research, but recent evidence suggests a more complex geological formation. Here, we analyze both molecular and fossil data to evaluate the tempo of biotic exchange across the Americas in light of geological evidence. We demonstrate significant waves of dispersal of terrestrial organisms at approximately ca. 20 and 6 Ma and corresponding events separating marine organisms in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans at ca. 23 and 7 Ma. The direction of dispersal and their rates were symmetrical until the last ca. 6 Ma, when northern migration of South American lineages increased significantly. Variability among taxa in their timing of dispersal or vicariance across the Isthmus is not explained by the ecological factors tested in these analyses, including biome type, dispersal ability, and elevation preference. Migration was therefore not generally regulated by intrinsic traits but more likely reflects the presence of emergent terrain several millions of years earlier than commonly assumed. These results indicate that the dramatic biotic turnover associated with the Great American Biotic Interchange was a long and complex process that began as early as the Oligocene-Miocene transition.

Diplomityö kartoittaa yleisesti tietoturvaohjelmistokehityksessä huomioitavia immateriaalioikeudellisia näkökohtia ja selvittää yksityiskohtaisemmin niiden soveltamista ja vaikutusta erään tietoturvakomponentin suunnittelussa ja toteutuksessa Soneran TradeXpress-ohjelmistoon. Kyseinen komponentti mahdollistaa muun muassa autentikaation ja salauksen käytön sähköisessä tiedonsiirrossa. Työ käsittää myös perustiedot tietoturvasta ja TradeXpress-ohjelmistosta, jotta komponentin kehitystä käsittelevän osuuden ymmärtäminen olisi helpompaa. Immateriaalioikeutta käsitellään vain niiltä osin, joilla on vaikutusta tietokoneohjelmiin ja ohjelmistotuotantoon. Näitä ovat muun muassa tekijänoikeus, patenttioikeus ja tavaramerkkioikeus. Diplomityön tuloksena syntyi selvitys immateriaalioikeudesta ja sen vaikutuksesta ohjelmistotuotantoprosesseihin.
