A pressurized capillary electrochromatography (pCEC) instrument with solvent gradient capability has been used for the separation of a peptide mixture. Retention mechanism and selectivity of the peptides were studied by pCEC using a strong cation exchange (SCX) column. The effects of applied voltage, supplementary pressure, organic modifier concentration, ionic strength,, and pH value on pCEC separation were investigated. It was found that the retention mechanism of the peptides in this system is based on a mixed mode of hydrophilic interaction, strong cation exchange, and electrophoresis. Compared with the separation results obtained by reverse phase pCEC and capillary electrophoresis (CE), this mixed-mode pCEC is more powerful for the separation of hydrophilic peptides with similar charge-to-mass ratio.

A novel catalyst system based on nickel(II) tetraphenylporphyrin (Ni(II)TPP) and methylaluminoxane for styrene polymerization was developed. This catalyst system has a high thermal stability and show fairly good activity. The obtained polystyrene (PS) was isotactic-rich atactic polymer by C-13 NMR analysis, and its molecular weight distribution was rather narrow (M-w/M-n approximate to 1.6, by GPC analysis). ESR revealed that Ni(II)TPP pi cation radicals were formed in the polymerization and could remain in the resulting PS stably. The mechanism of the polymerization was discussed and a special coordination mechanism was proposed. The PS product containing Ni(II)TPP pi cation radicals can be used as a potential functional material.

Salan ligated yttrium alkyl complex 1, (LY)-Y-1(CH2SiMe3)(THF) (Salan = L-1: [2-O-3,5-tBu(2)-C6H2CH2N(CH3) CH2](2)), was exposed to an oxygen/ nitrogen atmosphere to give a bimetallic alkoxide complex 4, [(LY)-Y-1(mu-OCH2SiMe3)](2). Whilst the lutetium counterparts 2 ((LLu)-Lu-1(CH2SiMe3)(THF)) and 3 ((LLu)-Lu-2(CH2SiMe3)(THF); L-2: [2-O-3-tBu-C6H2CH2N(CH3) CH2](2)) were hydrolysed with moist nitrogen to afford mixed hydroxy/silyloxy complexes 5 and 6 ([(LLu)-Lu-1,2(mu-OSiMe3)(mu-OH) LuL1,2]), respectively.

In this work, we report a simple approach for controllable synthesis of one-dimensional (ID) gold nanoparticle (AuNP) assemblies in solution. In the presence of divalent metallic ions, poly(acrylic acid)-1-dodecanethiol-stabilized AuNPs (PAA-DDT@AuNPs) are found to form I D assemblies in aqueous solution by an ion-templated chelation process; this causes an easily measurable change in the absorption spectrum of the particles. The assemblies are very stable and remain suspended in solution for more than one month without significant aggregation.

Intramolecular amide hydrolysis of N-methylmaleamic acid is revisited at the B3LYP/6-311G(2df,p)//B3LYP/6-31G(d,p)+ZVPE level, including solvent effects at the CPCM-B3LYP/6-311G(2df,p)//Onsager-B3LYP/6-31G(d,p)+ZPVE level. The concerted reaction mechanism is energetically favorable over stepwise reaction mechanisms in both the gas phase and solution. The calculated reaction barriers are significantly lower in solution than in the gas phase. In addition, it is concluded that the substituents of the four N-methylmaleamic acid derivatives considered herein have a significant effect on the gas-phase reaction barriers but a smaller, or little, effect on the barriers in solution.

The hydrolysis of ginsenoside standards and the crude extracts of ginseng has been investigated at different pH values (2.4 - 11.2) using high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS). The experimental results indicated that the pH value of aqueous solutions is an important factor in changing the composition of ginsenosides. For (20S)-protopanaxadiol ginsenosides, ginsenosides with a large mass hydrolyzed to form hydrolysates (20S)-Rg(3) and (20R)-Rg(3) at pH 4.3. There were more hydrolyzed products observed at pH 3.3: (20S)-F-2, C-25,26 hydrated ginsenoside "C-Y-1" and "C-Y-2" (MW = 802 Da) accompanied with (20S)-Rg(3), (20R)-Rg(3). At pH 2.4, only (20R)-Rg(3), (20S)-F-2, a small quantity of (20S)-Rg(3) and three C-25,26 hydrated ginsenosides were obtained. For (20S)protopanaxatriol Re, no hydrolysates were observed at pH 4.3; it was hydrolyzed at pH 3.3 to form hydrolysates (20S)-Rg, (20R)Rg(2) and hydrated C-25,26 (MW = 802 Da) and at pH 2.4 only C-25,26 hydrated ginsenosides "C-Y-1" and "C-Y-2" (MW = 802 Da) were left in the solution. Similar hydrolysis reactions could be also observed for the crude extracts of ginseng. It showed that HPLC/ESI-MS is a fast and convenient method to study the hydrolysis of ginseng.

The transfer of sodium cation facilitated by (anthraquinone-1-yloxy) methane-15-crown-5(L) has been investigated at the water/1,2-dichloroethane microinterface supported at the tip of a micropipette. The diffusion coefficient of (anthraquinone-1-yloxy) methane-15-crown-5 obtained was (3.42 +/- 0.20) x 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1). The steady-state voltammograms were observed for forward and backward scans due to sodium ion transfer facilitated by L with 1:1 stoichiometry. The mechanism corresponded to an interfacial complexation (TIC) and interfacial dissociation (TID) process. The association constant was calculated to be log beta(o) = 11.08 +/- 0.03 in the DCE phase. The association constant of other alkali metals (Li+, K+, Rb+) were also obtained.

A novel room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) has been prepared containing a cyclic hexaalkylguanidinium cation. The selective oxidation of a series of substituted benzyl alcohols has been carried out in it, with sodium hypochlorite as the oxidant. The RTIL acts as both phase transfer catalyst (PTC) and solvent. The ionic liquid could be recycled after extraction of the benzaldehyde product with ether.

The nucleophilic displacement reaction of n-bromooctane and potassium iodide in ionic liquid based on cyclic guanidinium cation(2) was investigated. The kinetic reasult shows that the rate of the reaction is enhanced in ionic liquid (2). The same reaction in [bmim][PF6](1)(where bmim = 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) was also studied. It was found that as a reaction medium ionic liquid (2) is better than (1) for nucelophilic displacement reactions.

The stability constants and species distributions of complexes of two lanthanide ions, Eu (III) and Tb(III), with a macrocyclic ligand, 3,6, 9, 17 20, 23-hexaazo-29, 30-dihydroxy-13, 27-dimethyl-tricylco-[23,3,1,1(11,15)] triaconta-1 (28) 11,13,15 (30), 25 26-hexane (BDBPH), in 1: 1 and 2: 1 system, were determined potentiometrically in 50% ethanol solution, at 35.0 degrees C and I = 0.100 mol/L (KCl). The two metal ions could form deprotonated mono- or dinuclear complexes with BDBPH with high stability after the three protons of the ligand completely neutralized. At higher pH values, Eu(M) could not form hydroxo complexes with BDBPH, while Tb(III) could form hydroxo complexes in the types of M2L(OH) M2L(OH)(2) and M2L (OH)(2). The kinetic study on the hydrolysis reaction of his (4-nitrophenyl) phosphate (BNPP) catalyzed by Tb-BDBPH system (2:1) was carried out in aqueous solution (pH 7.0 similar to 10.0) at 35 degrees C with I = 0.1000 mol/L (KCl). The second-order rate constant k(BNPP) (2.3 x 10(-3) (mol/L)(-1)center dot s(-1)) was determined. The dinuclear monohydroxo species, L-Tb-2-OH, is kinetically active species.

The intramolecular amide hydrolysis of N-methylmaleamic acid have been revisited by use of density functional theory and inclusion of solvent effects. The results indicate that concerted reaction mechanism is favored over stepwise reaction mechanism. This is in agreement with the previous theoretical study. Sovlent effects have significant influence on the reaction barrier.

The efficient cleavage of plasmid DNA ( pCAT) by binuclear lanthanide complexes was investigated. At 37 degrees C and neutral pH, both Ho23+L and Er23+L promoted 100% conversion of supercoiled plasmid to the nicked circular form and linear form in 1 h. The corresponding saturation kinetics curve of cleavage of pCAT plasmid by binuclear lanthanide complexes showed the expected increase with catalyst concentration. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. The complexes of a series of rare earths with Ge-132 have been prepared. The carboxyl anions of Ge-132 molecule were coordinated to rare earth ion with chelate style. In the complexes molecule, the GeO3/2 group of Ge-132 were hydrolyzed to become -Ge(OH)(3) group, and later does:not coordinate with rare earth ions. All of the complexes possess similar properties. In aqueous solution of pH 6 and 50 degrees C, these complexes can obviously selectively catalytically hydrolize the phosphatide bond of 5'-AMP and 5'-dAMP into phosphatic acid and riboside.
