Super elastic nitinol (NiTi) wires were exploited as highly robust supports for three distinct crosslinked polymeric ionic liquid (PIL)-based coatings in solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The oxidation of NiTi wires in a boiling (30%w/w) H2O2 solution and subsequent derivatization in vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) allowed for vinyl moieties to be appended to the surface of the support. UV-initiated on-fiber copolymerization of the vinyl-substituted NiTi support with monocationic ionic liquid (IL) monomers and dicationic IL crosslinkers produced a crosslinked PIL-based network that was covalently attached to the NiTi wire. This alteration alleviated receding of the coating from the support, which was observed for an analogous crosslinked PIL applied on unmodified NiTi wires. A series of demanding extraction conditions, including extreme pH, pre-exposure to pure organic solvents, and high temperatures, were applied to investigate the versatility and robustness of the fibers. Acceptable precision of the model analytes was obtained for all fibers under these conditions. Method validation by examining the relative recovery of a homologous group of phthalate esters (PAEs) was performed in drip-brewed coffee (maintained at 60 °C) by direct immersion SPME. Acceptable recoveries were obtained for most PAEs in the part-per-billion level, even in this exceedingly harsh and complex matrix.

Shape memory alloys are a special class of metals that can undergo large deformation yet still be able to recover their original shape through the mechanism of phase transformations. However, when they experience plastic slip, their ability to recover their original shape is reduced. This is due to the presence of dislocations generated by plastic flow that interfere with shape recovery through the shape memory effect and the superelastic effect. A one-dimensional model that captures the coupling between shape memory effect, the superelastic effect and plastic deformation is introduced. The shape memory alloy is assumed to have only 3 phases: austenite, positive variant martensite and negative variant martensite. If the SMA flows plastically, each phase will exhibit a dislocation field that permanently prevents a portion of it from being transformed back to other phases. Hence, less of the phase is available for subsequent phase transformations. A constitutive model was developed to depict this phenomena and simulate the effect of plasticity on both the shape memory effect and the superelastic effect in shape memory alloys. In addition, experimental tests were conducted to characterize the phenomenon in shape memory wire and superelastic wire. ^ The constitutive model was then implemented in within a finite element context as UMAT (User MATerial Subroutine) for the commercial finite element package ABAQUS. The model is phenomenological in nature and is based on the construction of stress-temperature phase diagram. ^ The model has been shown to be capable of capturing the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the coupling between plasticity and the shape memory effect and plasticity and the super elastic effect within acceptable limits. As a verification case a simple truss structure was built and tested and then simulated using the FEA constitutive model. The results where found to be close the experimental data. ^

Elastic properties of sodium doped Lithium potassium sulphate, LiK0.9Na0.1SO4, crystal has been studied by ultrasonic Pulse Echo Overlap [PEO] technique and are reported for the first time. The controversy regarding the type of crystal found while growth is performed at 35 °C with equimolar fraction of Li2SO4H2O, K2SO4 and Na2SO4 has been resolved by studying the elastic properties. The importance of this crystal is that it exhibits pyroelectric, ferroelectric and electro optic properties. It is simultaneously ferroelastic and superionic. The elastic properties of LiK0.9Na0.1SO4 crystal are well studied by measuring ultrasonic velocity in the crystal in certain specified crystallographic directions and evaluating the elastic stiffness constants, compliance constants and Poisson’s ratios. The anisotropy in the elastic properties of the crystal are well explained by the pictorial representation of the surface plots of phase velocity, slowness and linear compressibility in a-b and a-c planes.

ABSTRACT The power consumption and load capacity of agricultural machines have grown and the effects of pressure on the soil by tires have been still little investigated. In concern with sustainable development, the relationship machine-tire-soil must be in balance to give more consistency on the best use of tires for a given load. This study aimed to evaluate four tires of two constructive types, the bias belted tires and radial tires, both with respective rim diameters of 22.5 and 26.5 inches with variables measuring the footprint, elastic deformation, sinkage and resistance to penetration. A hydraulic press with an attachment shaft for tire mounting and a box of soil in which the tire has been imposed on a load of 53.00 kN using nominal pressures recommended by the tire manufacturer. The radial construction tire with rim diameter of 26.5 inches obtained less sinkage and resistance to penetration; however, greater elastic deformation and footprint compared to other tires. The bias-belted tire with 22.5-inch rim presented the highest resistance to penetration and the lowest elastic deformation.

Respiratory motion is a major source of reduced quality in positron emission tomography (PET). In order to minimize its effects, the use of respiratory synchronized acquisitions, leading to gated frames, has been suggested. Such frames, however, are of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as they contain reduced statistics. Super-resolution (SR) techniques make use of the motion in a sequence of images in order to improve their quality. They aim at enhancing a low-resolution image belonging to a sequence of images representing different views of the same scene. In this work, a maximum a posteriori (MAP) super-resolution algorithm has been implemented and applied to respiratory gated PET images for motion compensation. An edge preserving Huber regularization term was used to ensure convergence. Motion fields were recovered using a B-spline based elastic registration algorithm. The performance of the SR algorithm was evaluated through the use of both simulated and clinical datasets by assessing image SNR, as well as the contrast, position and extent of the different lesions. Results were compared to summing the registered synchronized frames on both simulated and clinical datasets. The super-resolution image had higher SNR (by a factor of over 4 on average) and lesion contrast (by a factor of 2) than the single respiratory synchronized frame using the same reconstruction matrix size. In comparison to the motion corrected or the motion free images a similar SNR was obtained, while improvements of up to 20% in the recovered lesion size and contrast were measured. Finally, the recovered lesion locations on the SR images were systematically closer to the true simulated lesion positions. These observations concerning the SNR, lesion contrast and size were confirmed on two clinical datasets included in the study. In conclusion, the use of SR techniques applied to respiratory motion synchronized images lead to motion compensation combined with improved image SNR and contrast, without any increase in the overall acquisition times.

The waste tire is belonging to insoluble high polymer elastic materials. It takes hundreds of years to resolve the macromolecules of waste tire into the standard which does not pollute the environment. More and more waste tires are air stored which causes space occupation and mosquito-breeding in the places that will spread diseases. The disposal methods include landfill, stockpiles, dumping and incising into particles. However, all these methods are not technically and economically efficient. The trend for the development of waste tire treatment processes is low cost, on-site, and high product recovery at high energy efficiency. In this project, microwave energy has been applied for treatment of the waste tire in laboratory scale. Experimental conditions were varied in order to find the optimum processing parameters such as temperature and atmosphere. The microwave absorption capability of waste tire rubber was investigated by measuring its dielectric properties from room temperature to 800°C in stagnant air and pure nitrogen atmospheres, respectively, at both 915 and 2466MHz.The dielectric parameters data increase steadily at temperatures below 400°C. At temperatures above 400°C, the relative dielectric loss factor and relative dielectric constant begin to decrease. This is due to the solid phase of tire rubber begins to transform to gas phase and the release of volatiles. The calculations of microwave half-power depth and penetration depth of waste tire rubber show that the pyrolysis process significantly improves the microwave absorption capability of the waste tire rubber at low temperatures. The calculated reflection loss of the waste tire rubber suggests that its maximum microwave absorption can be obtained when the rubber has a thickness of 25mm at 915MHz. The sample dimension has a significant effect on the overall performance of microwave absorption in waste tire during pyrolysis and thus on the efficiency of microwave waste tire rubber pyrolysis.
