Literature to date suggests contrary indicators of acceptance of the use of technology to support learning by females. With the increasing adoption of information technology to support teaching and learning, it is imperative that factors which may impede student learning are identified. The research reported here is of a large-scale survey of the perceptions of university students about eLearning and their use of the online learning environment. The aim of the survey was to gather data to inform about online learning practices at the University. The results were explored, amongst other factors, by gender. Findings include no significant differences between the female and male students with respect to being able to use the online learning environment confidently and effectively. In general the female students were more willing to participate in online discussions. However, there was no difference between the female and male students regarding their willingness to voice their opinions online. An unexpected result was the greater value placed by female students on using the online environment for communicating and collaborating with students of diverse background.

There has been an increasing focus on social and emotional development in educational programmes in early childhood as both variables are believed to influence behavioural outcomes in the classroom. However, relationships between social and emotional development and behaviour in early childhood have rarely been explored. This article sets out to investigate the conceptualisation of these variables and their inter-relationships. Structural equation models were used to assess if differences exist between boys and girls in relation to social and emotional competences, which could affect the relative success of such programmes. This article is based on cross-sectional data collected from 749 four- to six-year-olds and their teachers. The findings generally supported the hypothesised relationships between social and emotional development variables and prosocial behaviour (including internalising behaviour) for boys and girls. However, some gender differences were noted in externalising behaviour, which teachers often consider to be most significant due to its potentially disruptive nature in the classroom.

This paper reports on a large scale survey of the perceptions of university students to their use of an online learning environment. Tutkielma on haastatteluaineistoon perustuva tapaustutkimus, jossa tarkastellaan viittä pääkaupunkiseudulla elävää maahanmuuttajanaista suomen kielen oppijoina ja käyttäjinä. Työssä paneudutaan toisaalta identiteetin ja toisen kielen oppimisen suhteeseen ja toisaalta siihen, millaisissa arjen vuorovaikutustilanteissa toisen kielen oppija pääsee puhumista harjoittelemaan. Tutkimuksen teoreettisena kehyksenä ovat sosiokulttuurinen kielentutkimus ja jälkistrukturalistinen identiteettikäsitys. Työn innoittajana ja esikuvana on kanadalaisen Bonny Nortonin tapaustutkimus Identity and Language Learning: Gender, Ethnicity and Educational Change (2000), jonka keskeisistä käsitteistä on omaksuttu muun muassa kielenoppijan panostus. Aineisto on kerätty puolentoista vuoden aikana ja koostuu 14 nauhoitetusta ja litteroidusta haastattelusta. Analyysi jakautuu kahteen osaan. Ensimmäisessä osassa osoitetaan yksilön sosiaalisen identiteetin yhteys toisen kielen oppimiseen kolmen ulottuvuuden kautta, joita ovat Suomeen muuton syyt ja tulevaisuudensuunnitelmat, kielenoppijuus ja monikielisyys sekä sukupuoli ja ikä. Olennainen päätelmä on, ettei yksilön toisen kielen oppimismenestystä voi erottaa identiteetistä. Toisessa osassa analysoidaan arkielämän vuorovaikutustilanteita: ensinnäkin sitä, millaisia mahdollisuuksia toisen kielen oppijalla on päästä puhumaan kohdekieltä ja toiseksi sitä, millaisiksi nuo tilanteet muotoutuvat. Keskeisin tutkimustulos on, että toisen kielen oppijalle tarjoutuu liian vähän vapaamuotoisia suomen puhumisen mahdollisuuksia. Vuorovaikutustilanteita hallitsevat usein epätasapainoiset valtasuhteet, jotka rajoittavat kielenoppijaa, toisinaan jopa vaientavat tämän. Toisen kielen oppimisen ja identiteetin suhdetta on Suomessa tutkittu varsin vähän. Niin ikään oppijan vaientaminen vuorovaikutustilanteissa on jäänyt huomiotta. Tutkielma avaa ajankohtaista aihepiiriä ja mielenkiintoisia jatkotutkimusnäkymiä, joista yksi olisi vuorovaikutustilanteiden etnografinen havainnointi.

In the home of others: exploring new sites and methods when investigating the doings of gender, class and ethnicity What role does the experience of being in and observing other people’s home play informing one’s gender and class identities and family aspirations? And how can it be explored? Through the traditions of socialization theory the everyday/-night experiences of family life are objectified into an institution (the family) with abstracted relations (mother-father-child) and functions (”primary socialization”). This is a view directly related to ruling relations through which the family is institutionalized, by rules and regulations, and made accountable as such. Hereby the question of experiences of other sites (and localities!) and other relations when forming one’s gender and family aspirations are not raised. In this article it is argued that when using an alternative approach (the method of inquiry proposed by Dorothy E. Smith) and alternative methods (memory work) the door to other homes is opened. Using experience stories a picture is drawn where new sites and relations are made visible as crucial contexts where gender and family life is explored and learned. By illuminating the ”work knowledge” of family life another way of mapping is presented, a way that extends and transforms the traditions within family research.

Low female participation rates in computing are a current concern of the education sector. To address this problem an intervention was developed — computing skills were introduced to girls in their English classes using three different teaching styles: peer tutoring, cross-age tutoring and teacher instruction (control). The sample comprised 136 girls from Years 8 and 10 from a single-sex government school. A pre-test post-test quantitative design was used. To describe the students perspectives, qualitative data were collected from six focus groups conducted with 8–10 students — one from each of the six classes. It was predicted that cross-age tutoring would yield more positive effects than peer tutoring which, in turn, would yield more positive effects than traditional teacher instruction as assessed by achievement on class tasks and attitudes towards computing. The hypothesis was not supported by the quantitative analysis, however in the qualitative data cross-age tutoring was appraised more favourably than peer tutoring or teacher instruction. The latter was the least preferred condition due to: (1) inefficiency; (2) difficulty understanding teachers' explanations; and (3) lack of teacher knowledge. Problems with the implementation of the intervention identified in the focus groups were teacher differences, system failures, missed classes, lack of communication, and selection of computing activities. Practical suggestions were provided relevant to the introduction of cross-age tutoring and the use of computers within secondary level English classes.

Women are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) university coursework, reflecting long-standing gender issues that have existed in core middle-school STEM subject areas. Using data from a survey and written responses, we report on findings following the introduction of engineering education in middle school classes across three schools (grade level 7, n=122). The engineering experiences fused science, technology and mathematics concepts. The survey revealed higher percentages for girls than boys in 13 of the 24 items; however there were six items with a 20% difference in their perceptions about learning in STEM. For instance, despite girls recording that they have been provided equal or more opportunities than boys in STEM, they believed they do not do as well as boys (80% boys, 48% girls) or want to seek a career in STEM (39% boys, 17% girls). The written responses revealed gender differences across a number of themes in the students’ responses, including resources, group work, the nature and type of learning experiences, content knowledge, and teachers’ instructional style. Exposing students to STEM education facilitates an awareness of their learning and may assist girls to consider studying STEM subjects or STEM careers.

A sample of 248 Australian university students participated in a study that investigated the influence of assessment type and discipline of study on students' learning approaches. Participants (93 psychology and 155 business students) responded to the Study Process Questionnaire in a context of preparation for a hypothetical examination. The hypothetical examination is in either a multiple-choice or an essay format. Results indicated that assessment type had no significant influence on how students approach their learning, while discipline did have significant influence on student learning.

Student placement outcomes were examined using archival data from a field education program on the gender of both students and supervisors to test the hypothesis that gender is a predictor of placement outcome. The results of these analyses suggest that whilst the supervisor gender is not critical, the student gender is a significant predictor of placement outcome. As male students are more likely to encounter placement difficulties than female students, inquiry into the student’s concept of masculinity is proposed as a way to assist male students in field education.

The increasing diversity and mobility of students have challenged universities, world over, to review educational courses and delivery to provide a more satisfying learning environment to students. The continuous improvement of the 'quality' of teaching and learning is one of the key goals of universities endeavouring to fulfil their obligations as learning institutions. Using a revised SPQ2F instrument (Biggs, 2003, Biggs and Leung, 2001), this exploratory study undertakes a comparative analysis of the age and gender differences in the learning orientations of two groups of tertiary students in an Australian University. The results indicate that there are no significant differences in the learning orientations of students but on average they seem to demonstrate deep learning than surface learning although they may differ in terms of the learning contexts.

Leslie Roman states 'white is a colour too'. Yet the whiteness of educational leaders is rarely questioned, although masculinism—the enduring capacity of different masculinities to remain the norm in leadership—is increasingly under scrutiny. Rarely do white men or women leaders question their whiteness, whereas indigenous and other minority groups, as a consequence of their being 'other than white', are expected to explain their exclusion. Instead, the 'problem' is depicted as the lack of 'the Other', and therefore a problem for and of 'the Other'. This article confronts normative whiteness in educational administration from the perspective of feminist and critical race theory, considering how foregrounding whiteness in leadership is a necessary condition of inclusive education and leadership.
