Integrability of the Russian doll BCS model

We show that integrability of the BCS model extends beyond Richardson's model (where all Cooper pair scatterings have equal coupling) to that of the Russian doll BCS model for which the couplings have a particular phase dependence that breaks time-reversal symmetry. This model is shown to be integrable using the quantum inverse scattering method, and the exact solution is obtained by means of the algebraic Bethe ansatz. The inverse problem of expressing local operators in terms of the global operators of the monodromy matrix is solved. This result is used to find a determinant formulation of a correlation function for fluctuations in the Cooper pair occupation numbers. These results are used to undertake exact numerical analysis for small systems at half-filling.

The Emperor Has New Clothes: Empirical Tests of Mainstream Theories of Economic Growth

Modern macroeconomic theory utilises optimal control techniques to model the maximisation of individual well-being using a lifetime utility function. Agents face choices over current and future consumption (with resultant implied savings decisions) seeking to maximise the present value of current plus future well-being. However, such inter-temporal welfare-maximising assumptions remain empirically untested. In the work presented here we test whether welfare was in (historical) fact maximised in the US between 1870-2000 and find empirical support for the optimising basis of growth theory, but only once a comprehensive view of what constitutes a country’s wealth or capital is taken into account.

CLOTHES : una experiencia multimedia interactiva para el alumnado de Educación Primaria.

Se plantea la aplicación didáctica multimedia en lengua inglesa de Clothes. Este programa permite un acercamiento al campo semántico de las ropas agrupado en torno a las estaciones del año, facilitando la adquisición del léxico tanto a nivel oral como escrito. Sus objetivos son: a) Incluir las TICs de manera real en el currículo; b) Motivar al alumnado en la elaboración de tareas y proyectos que se manejan utilizando el ordenador; c) Fomentar la desinhibición del alumnado a la hora de expresarse oralmente en lengua inglesa; d) Potenciar el aprendizaje de una segunda lengua como un hecho de disfrute y entretenimiento; e) Manejar las herramientas básicas de navegación del programa Flash; f) Reforzar la autoestima del alumnado en la elaboración de tareas cercanas y significativas; g) Favorecer el respeto hacia los trabajos y tareas realizados por los compañeros y compañeras en el ámbito del aula; h) Incidir en valores como el gusto por la tarea bien hecha y el esfuerzo y dedicación en los pequeños detalles. La aplicación está orientada fundamentalmente al alumnado de tercer ciclo pero puede ser utilizada y trabajada en segundo o primer ciclo si se estima conveniente.

Future directions for doll play narrative research: a commentary

Past research into doll play narratives has been productive in elucidating children's inner experiences, their determinants, and their role in child behaviour problems. The current volume takes this work forward in several directions: first, it indicates the value of designing story stems and coding schemes to address more specific questions about the developmental process of specific syndromes. Second, contributions demonstrate the "added value" provided by children's narratives, over and above information derived from other sources. Third, this recent research enhances our understanding of the role of parental representations and states of mind in influencing children's narratives; how these may come to influence child functioning via co-constructed parent-child dialogues is an important area for future research. Finally, possibilities of extending the clinical utility of doll play narratives are explored.

Doll Play narratives about starting school in children of socially anxious mothers, and their relation to subsequent child school-based anxiety

Background: Child social anxiety is common, and predicts later emotional and academic impairment. Offspring of socially anxious mothers are at increased risk. It is important to establish whether individual vulnerability to disorder can be identified in young children. Method: The responses of 4.5 year-old children of mothers with social phobia (N = 62) and non-anxious mothers (N = 60) were compared, two months before school entry, using a Doll Play (DP) procedure focused on the social challenge of starting school. DP responses were examined in relation to teacher reports of anxious-depressed symptoms and social worries at the end of the child’s first school term. The role of earlier child behavioral inhibition and attachment, assessed at 14 months, was also considered. Results: Compared to children of non-anxious mothers, children of mothers with social phobia were significantly more likely to give anxiously negative responses in their school DP (OR = 2.57). In turn, negative DP predicted teacher reported anxious-depressed and social worry problems. There were no effects of infant behavioral inhibition or attachment. Conclusion: Vulnerability in young children at risk of anxiety can be identified using Doll Play narratives.

Automatic clothes segmentation for soft biometrics

[EN]During the last decade, researchers have verified that clothing can provide information for gender recognition. However, before extracting features, it is necessary to segment the clothing region. We introduce a new clothes segmentation method based on the application of the GrabCut technique over a trixel mesh, obtaining very promising results for a close to real time system. Finally, the clothing features are combined with facial and head context information to outperform previous results in gender recognition with a public database.

Stripe based clothes segmentation

[EN]In this paper, a clothes segmentation method for fashion parsing is described. This method does not rely in a previous pose estimation but people segmentation. Therefore, novel and classic segmentation techniques have been considered and improved in order to achieve accurate people segmentation. Unlike other methods described in the literature, the output is the bounding box and the predominant color of the different clothes and not a pixel level segmentation. The proposal is based on dividing the person area into an initial fixed number of stripes, that are later fused according to similar color distribution. To assess the quality of the proposed method the experiments are carried out with the Fashionista dataset that is widely used in the fashion parsing community.
