Although cultural industries can benefit from social networks in many ways, few Spanish studies examine the extent to which firms within this economic sector actually use such networks. This study's objective is to investigate the role of online social networks in Spanish cultural firms. The study begins with a literature review on cultural industries and social networks. Then the study proceeds to a Delphi analysis that draws upon experts' opinions. Results reveal a predominance of utilitarian uses over expressive ones, as well as an overriding use of proactive motivations rather than reactive ones within the context of cultural firms' use of social networks. The study confirms the profitability of these networks and the transfer of influence or power from providers to the consumers of cultural goods and services.

International migration sets in motion a range of significant transnational processes that connect countries and people. How migration interacts with development and how policies might promote and enhance such interactions have, since the turn of the millennium, gained attention on the international agenda. The recognition that transnational practices connect migrants and their families across sending and receiving societies forms part of this debate. The ways in which policy debate employs and understands transnational family ties nevertheless remain underexplored. This article sets out to discern the understandings of the family in two (often intermingled) debates concerned with transnational interactions: The largely state and policydriven discourse on the potential benefits of migration on economic development, and the largely academic transnational family literature focusing on issues of care and the micro-politics of gender and generation. Emphasizing the relation between diverse migration-development dynamics and specific family positions, we ask whether an analytical point of departure in respective transnational motherhood, fatherhood or childhood is linked to emphasizing certain outcomes. We conclude by sketching important strands of inclusions and exclusions of family matters in policy discourse and suggest ways to better integrate a transnational family perspective in global migration-development policy.

This study examined the predictive utility of Lent’s (2004) social cognitive model of well-being in the context of academic satisfaction with a sample of Southeast Asian American college students using a cross-sectional design. Path analysis was used to examine the role of perceived parental trauma, perceived parental acculturative stress, intergenerational family conflict, and social cognitive predictors to academic satisfaction. Participants were 111 Southeast Asian American and 111 East Asian American college students who completed online measures. Contrary to expectations, none of the contextual cultural variables were significant predictors of academic satisfaction. Also contrary to expectations, academic support and self-efficacy were not directly linked to academic satisfaction and outcome expectation was not linked to goal progress. Other social cognitive predictors were related directly and indirectly to academic satisfaction, consistent with prior research. Limitations and implications for future research and practice are addressed.

This article describes some of the current transformations regarding the processes by which information and culture are generated, from the point of view of developing countries. In this brief analysis, the article discusses the role of projects such as Creative Commons for developing countries. It also discusses the idea of legal commons and social commons. While the idea of legal commons can be understood as the voluntary use of licenses such as Creative Commons in order to create a “commons”, the idea of social commons has to do with the tensions between legality and illegality in developing countries. These tensions appear prominently in the so-called global “peripheries”, and in many instances make the legal structure of intellectual property irrelevant, unfamiliar, or unenforceable, for various reasons. With the emergence of digital technology and the Internet, in many places and regions in developing countries (especially in the “peripheries”), technology ended up arriving earlier than the idea of intellectual property. Such a de facto situation propitiated the emergence of cultural industries that were not driven by intellectual property incentives. In these cultural businesses, the idea of “sharing” and of free dissemination of the content is intrinsic to the social circumstances taking place in these peripheries. Also, the appropriation of technology on the part of the “peripheries” ends up promoting autonomous forms of bridging the digital divide, such as the “LAN house” phenomenon discussed below. This paper proposes that many lessons can be learned from the business models emerging from social commons practices in developing countries. The tension between legality and illegality in “peripheral” areas in developing countries is not new. The work of Boaventura de Sousa Santos and others in the 1970s was paradigmatic for the discussion of legal pluralism regarding the occupation of land in Brazil. This paper aims to follow in that same pioneer tradition of studies about legal pluralism, and to apply those principles to the discussion of “intellectual property” rather than the ownership of land.

Digital technologies and the Internet in particular have transformed the ways we create, distribute, use, reuse and consume cultural content; have impacted on the workings of the cultural industries, and more generally on the processes of making, experiencing and remembering culture in local and global spaces. Yet, few of these, often profound, transformations have found reflection in law and institutional design. Cultural policy toolkits, in particular at the international level, are still very much offline/analogue and conceive of culture as static property linked to national sovereignty and state boundaries. The article describes this state of affairs and asks the key question of whether there is a need to reform global cultural law and policy and if yes, what the essential elements of such a reform should be.

This study examines the contribution that artists from a non-EU background make towards cultural life and cultural industries in Europe and beyond. In particular, it looks at how such artists form "diasporas" which in turn create networks of cultural exchange inside the EU and with third countries. It provides examples of these activities in three broad diaspora groups of African, Balkan and Turkish background.

ABSTRACT This dissertation reveals parallels between the architects/designers Charlotte Perriand (1903- 1999) and Kazuyo Sejima (b. 1956), reflected in a series of small projects I call petite architecture—habitable technological furniture—, which formed during similar periods of social, cultural, economic, industrial and transnational change in France in the 1920s and in Japan in the 1980s. This research focuses on domestic architecture conceived from the inside by architects with additional training in furniture design. At the same time, it explores the relationships established between the design of a house, a piece of furniture, a machine, or a dress. Small architectural projects, close to the furniture, designed by Sejima have not been sufficiently studied, as well as the experimental architectural projects designed by Perriand. Both of their experimental trajectories analyzed from this renovated point of view converge on what we call petite architecture. Thus, it raises a new spatial paradigm in the context of feminine power within the media, as direct consumers, and transnational cultural exchange. When furniture expands and is technologically equipped to the point where it becomes habitable by a group, or groups of people, providing its occupants with sensorial comfort, it is petite architecture. In 2009, at a conference in Madrid, Ito showed a picture of Sejima posing at his Pao I (1985). Just eighty years earlier, in 1929, Le Corbusier exhibited in a conference in Buenos Aires an image of Perriand posing for his Chaise Longue (1928). The coincidence of the two photographs, along with two inspiring articles by Toyo Ito "Adèle's dream" (1984) — whose enigmatic title uses a French female name to describe a Japanese house — and "Simple lines for Le Corbusier" (1994) led to a hypothesis and an investigation comparing the two architects, their mentors, and two objects, each belonging to two distant times and places. Perriand and Sejima were emblems of the concept of New Femininity, both had success in the media of their time before being hired by Le Corbusier and Toyo Ito respectively. Together with their mentors they designed two objects that became icons of the Machine Age and the Electronic Age respectively: the Chaise Longue (1928) and Pao I (1985). Designed "for themselves," Perriand and Sejima used their own bodies as a measuring unit and their image as a publicity stunt to promote the two objects respectively. Both objects are the embryonic capsules of the architecture that pampers the scale or petite (objects that conflate residence, machine and furniture, and have sensuality as a distinctive feature). From the technical precision, luxurious materials, and approach towards relaxation, emerged a playful nomadism, which anticipated the further development of what we call petite architecture. Perriand and Sejima would develop these ideas throughout their career, pooling their interests on the physical properties of materials, formation in furniture design, and their intense interest in fashion. The dissertation concludes that petite architecture is the manifestation of an age, which follows the Machine Age defined by Le Corbusier and the Electronic Age described by Toyo Ito. In this sense, the dissertation demonstrates the way in which important architects have focused their ambitious ideas on small projects. petite characteristics are summarized as being: architecture that pampers the scale, is (de)mountable and therefore temporary, explores the formal and technical potential of novel materials and techniques imported from other industries, incorporates sensual conditions according with its anthropometric scale, and is conceived for the leisure of a group of people. In addition, by way of colophon, the dissertation discovers the existence of a fictional story that links Charlotte Perriand and Kazuyo Sejima through Toyo Ito: "Adèle's Diary".

This dissertation examines how Buenos Aires emerged as a creative capital of mass culture and cultural industries in South America during a period when Argentine theater and cinema expanded rapidly, winning over a regional marketplace swelled by transatlantic immigration, urbanization and industrialization. I argue that mass culture across the River Plate developed from a singular dynamic of exchange and competition between Buenos Aires and neighboring Montevideo. The study focuses on the Argentine, Uruguayan, and international performers, playwrights, producers, cultural impresarios, critics, and consumers who collectively built regional cultural industries. The cultural industries in this region blossomed in the interwar period as the advent of new technologies like sound film created profitable opportunities for mass cultural production and new careers for countless theater professionals. Buenos Aires also became a global cultural capital in the wider Hispanic Atlantic world, as its commercial culture served a region composed largely of immigrants and their descendants. From the 1920s through the 1940s, Montevideo maintained a subordinate but symbiotic relationship with Buenos Aires. The two cities shared interlinked cultural marketplaces that attracted performers and directors from the Atlantic world to work in theatre and film productions, especially in times of political upheaval such as the Spanish Civil War and the Perón era in Argentina. As a result of this transnational process, Argentine mass culture became widely consumed throughout South America, competing successfully with Hollywood, European, and other Latin American cinemas and helping transform Buenos Aires into a cosmopolitan metropolis. By examining the relationship between regional and national frames of cultural production, my dissertation contributes to the fields of Latin American studies and urban history while seeking to de-center the United States and Europe from the central framing of transnational history.
