Chemoherm carbonates, as well as numerous other types of methane seep carbonates, were discovered in 2004 along the passive margin of the northern South China Sea. Lithologically, the carbonates are micritic containing peloids, clasts and clam fragments. Some are highly brecciated with aragonite layers of varying thicknesses lining fractures and voids. Dissolution and replacement is common. Mineralogically, the carbonates are dominated by high magnesium calcites (HMC) and aragonite. Some HMCs with MgCO3 contents of between 30-38 mol%-extreme-HMC, occur in association with minor amounts of dolomite. All of the carbonates are strongly depleted in d13C, with a range from -35.7 to -57.5 per mil PDB and enriched in d18O (+ 4.0 to + 5.3 per mil PDB). Abundant microbial rods and filaments were recognized within the carbonate matrix as well as aragonite cements, likely fossils of chemosynthetic microbes involved in carbonate formation. The microbial structures are intimately associated with mineral grains. Some carbonate mineral grains resemble microbes. The isotope characteristics, the fabrics, the microbial structure, and the mineralogies are diagnostic of carbonates derived from anaerobic oxidation of methane mediated by microbes. From the succession of HMCs, extreme-HMC, and dolomite in layered tubular carbonates, combined with the presence of microbial structure and diagenetic fabric, we suggest that extreme-HMC may eventually transform into dolomites. Our results add to the worldwide record of seep carbonates and establish for the first time the exact locations and seafloor morphology where such carbonates formed in the South China Sea. Characteristics of the complex fabric demonstrate how seep carbonates may be used as archives recording multiple fluid regimes, dissolution, and early transformation events.

Seamounts are of great interest to science, industry and conservation because of their potential role as 'stirring rods' of the oceans, their enhanced productivity, their high local biodiversity, and the growing exploitation of their natural resources. This is accompanied by rising concern about the threats to seamount ecosystems, e.g. through over-fishing and the impact of trawling. OASIS described the functioning characteristics of seamount ecosystems. OASIS' integrated hydrographic, biogeochemical and biological information. Based on two case studies. The scientific results, condensed in conceptual and mass balanced ecosystem models, were applied to outline a model management plan as well as site-specific management plans for the seamounts investigated. OASIS addressed five main objectives: Objective 1: To identify and describe the physical forcing mechanisms effecting seamount systems Objective 2: To assess the origin, quality and dynamics of particulate organic material within the water column and surface sediment at seamounts. Objective 3: To describe aspects of the biodiversity and the ecology of seamount biota, to assess their dynamics and the maintenance of their production. Objective 4: Modelling the trophic ecology of seamount ecosystems. Objective 5: Application of scientific knowledge to practical conservation.

Diversity of endolithic Dry Valley rock microorganisms was studied by evaluating the presence of morphotypes in enrichments. Storage of rock samples for 16 h over dry ice affected the diversity of endolithic organisms, especially that of algae and fungi. Diversity in various samples depended on rock location and exposure, on the rock type, and to some extent on the pH of the pulverized rock samples. In most cases sandstone contained more morphotypes than dolerite or granite. Presence of many different phototrophs resulted in greater diversity of the heterotrophs in the enrichments. Samples from Linnaeus Terrace and Battleship Promontory had higher morphotype (MT) numbers than those from more exposed sites such as New Mountain, University Valley, Dais, or Mt. Fleming. Beacon sandstone (13 samples) from Linnaeus Terrace varied greatly with respect to MT numbers, although the pH values ranged only from 4.2-5.3. The highest MT number of 24 per sample was obtained from the upper surface of a flat boulder tilted to the North. Only two MT's were found in a hard sandstone sample from the wind-exposed and more shaded east side of the Terrace. 15 sandstone samples from Battleship Promontory contained more diverse populations: there occurred a total of 131 different MT's in these samples as compared to only 68 in Linnaeus Terrace samples. Cysts of colorless flagellates were found in some Battleship Promontory samples; rnost samples were populated with a wealth of different cyanobacteria. Studies on the distribution of actinomycete morphotypes in Linnaeus Terrace sandstone revealed great differences between individual boulders. Identification tests and lipid analyses made with representative strains of the isolated 1500 pure cultures led to genus names such as Caulobacter, Blastobacter, Hyphomicrobium, Micrococcus, Arthrobacter, Brevibacterium, Corynebacterium, Bifidobacterium, Mycobacterium, Nocardia (Amycolata), Micromonospora, Streptomyces, Blastococcus, and Deinococcus. Our data demonstrate the great diversity of Antarctic endolithic microbial populations.

Trace fossils are in places abundant in cores from DSDP Leg 56 sites. They are particularly rich in the pelagic-clay sequence at Site 436. Some significant trace fossils, including Zoophycos, Teichichnus, Chondrites, rind and solid burrows, and pellet-armored rods, are described. The ichnofauna, except for pellet-armored rods in diatomaceous mudstone of the landward trench slope, is characterized by cosmopolitan bathyal to abyssal forms.

Authigenic gypsum, pyrite, and glauconite are disseminated throughout an unusually long (346 m) Miocene section of mixed biogenic carbonate and diatomaceous ooze drilled on the Falkland Plateau at DSDP Site 329 (water depth, 1519 m). The present organic carbon content of the sediment is low, ranging between 0.1 and 0.7%. Gypsum occurs as euhedral single or twinned crystals of selenite up to 5 mm in diameter, sometimes in the form of gypsum rosettes. These crystals are intact and unabraded, comprising up to 4% of the washed sample. The authigenic nature of the gypsum is demonstrated by the presence of diatoms and radiolarians embedded within the gypsum crystals. The gypsum co-occurs with pyrite and glauconite in these samples. The pyrite occurs as framboids, foraminiferal infillings, rods, and granular sheetlike masses composed of pyrite octahedra. The glauconite occurs as foraminiferal infillings and as free grains. The gypsum and pyrite were identified by energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and scanning electron micrographs. Some of the gypsum has grown on pyrite, indicating that it precipitated after the pyrite, perhaps in response to a change in pH conditions. The formation of the mineral suite can be explained by current models of in situ sulfide and sulfate precipitation coincident with diagenesis and oxidation of much of the original organic carbon.

Authigenic carbonates were collected from methane seeps at Hydrate Hole at 3113 m water depth and Diapir Field at 2417 m water depth on the northern Congo deep-sea fan during RV Meteor cruise M56. The carbonate samples analyzed here are nodules, mainly composed of aragonite and high-Mg calcite. Abundant putative microbial carbonate rods and associated pyrite framboids were recognized within the carbonate matrix. The d13C values of the Hydrate Hole carbonates range from -62.5 permil to -46.3 permil PDB, while the d13C values of the Diapir Field carbonate are somewhat higher, ranging from -40.7 permil to -30.7 permil PDB, indicating that methane is the predominant carbon source at both locations. Relative enrichment of 18O (d18O values as high as 5.2 permil PDB) are probably related to localized destabilization of gas hydrate. The total content of rare earth elements (REE) of 5% HNO3-treated solutions derived from carbonate samples varies from 1.6 ppm to 42.5 ppm. The shale-normalized REE patterns all display positive Ce anomalies (Ce/Ce* > 1.3), revealing that the carbonates precipitated under anoxic conditions. A sample from Hydrate Hole shows a concentric lamination, corresponding to fluctuations in d13C values as well as trace elements contents. These fluctuations are presumed to reflect changes of seepage flux.

On the basis of materials collected in June-August 1994 characteristic data on microplankton were gathered in three biotopes of the eastern shelf of the Bering Sea: open shelf (coastal zone), the harbor, and the salt lagoon of Saint Paul Island (Pribiof Islands). The following parameters of microplanktonic communities were analyzed: abundance, biomass, and production of autotrophic picoplankton (picoalgae and cyanobacteria); abundance, biomass, growth rate constant, and production of bacterioplankton; role of filiform bacteria in bacterioplankton; species composition of heterotrophic flagellates and ciliates, their abundance, and biomass. Growth rates and consumption rates of picoplankton and bacterioplankton by heterotrophic nano- and microplankton were estimated in the experiments using the dilution method. Temporal dynamics of all structural and functional parameters of microplankton were analyzed. The minor role of autotrophic picoplankton and significant role of bacterioplankton as well as heterotrophic nano- and microplankton in planktonic communities of studied biotopes during summer months was shown. During certain periods, bacterial biomass was as high as 50-65% of phytoplankton biomass, and production of bacteria was as high as 20-40% of primary production. In the middle of the season biomass of nano- and microheterotrophic organisms in different biotopes exceeded biomass of mesozooplankton 2-10 times. Average consumption of bacterial production by nano- and microplankton during the period of observations was 85-94%.

We studied the effects of temperature and pH on larval development, settlement and juvenile survival of a Mediterranean population of the sea urchin Arbacia lixula. Three temperatures (16, 17.5 and 19 °C) were tested at present pH conditions (pHT 8.1). At 19 °C, two pH levels were compared to reflect present average (pHT 8.1) and near-future average conditions (pHT 7.7, expected by 2100). Larvae were reared for 52-days to achieve the full larval development and complete the metamorphosis to the settler stage. We analyzed larval survival, growth, morphology and settlement success. We also tested the carry-over effect of acidification on juvenile survival after 3 days. Our results showed that larval survival and size significantly increased with temperature. Acidification resulted in higher survival rates and developmental delay. Larval morphology was significantly altered by low temperatures, which led to narrower larvae with relatively shorter skeletal rods, but larval morphology was only marginally affected by acidification. No carry-over effects between larvae and juveniles were detected in early settler survival, though settlers from larvae reared at pH 7.7 were significantly smaller than their counterparts developed at pH 8.1. These results suggest an overall positive effect of environmental parameters related to global change on the reproduction of A. lixula, and reinforce the concerns about the increasing negative impact on shallow Mediterranean ecosystems of this post-glacial colonizer.

Manganese nodules made of radiating rods of well crystallized birnessite were sampled at 8 degree 481.2'N, 103 degree 53.8W, 1875 m below sea level by a dredge that also collected hyaloclastite and basaltic talus. The nodule field is on the floor of a caldera within a young tholeiitic seamount and was discovered and photographed during a deep-two survey. It is interpreted as a brecciated hydrothermal deposit, crystallized from an amorphous manganese oxide precipitate that formed when seawater-based hydrothermal fluids mixed with oxidized seawater. The nodules and surrounding igneous rocks have subsequently been encrusted with hydrogenous ferromanganese oxides.

Reduction in global ocean pH due to the uptake of increased atmospheric CO2 is expected to negatively affect calcifying organisms, including the planktonic larval stages of many marine invertebrates. Planktonic larvae play crucial roles in the benthic-pelagic life cycle of marine organisms by connecting and sustaining existing populations and colonizing new habitats. Calcified larvae are typically denser than seawater and rely on swimming to navigate vertically structured water columns. Larval sand dollars Dendraster excentricus have calcified skeletal rods supporting their bodies, and propel themselves with ciliated bands looped around projections called arms. Ciliated bands are also used in food capture, and filtration rate is correlated with band length. As a result, swimming and feeding performance are highly sensitive to morphological changes. When reared at an elevated PCO2 level (1000 ppm), larval sand dollars developed significantly narrower bodies at four and six-arm stages. Morphological changes also varied between four observed maternal lineages, suggesting within-population variation in sensitivity to changes in PCO2 level. Despite these morphological changes, PCO2 concentration alone had no significant effect on swimming speeds. However, acidified larvae had significantly smaller larval stomachs and bodies, suggesting reduced feeding performance. Adjustments to larval morphologies in response to ocean acidification may prioritize swimming over feeding, implying that negative consequences of ocean acidification are carried over to later developmental stages.
