The Complexity of Non-Iterated Probabilistic Justification Logic

The logic PJ is a probabilistic logic defined by adding (noniterated) probability operators to the basic justification logic J. In this paper we establish upper and lower bounds for the complexity of the derivability problem in the logic PJ. The main result of the paper is that the complexity of the derivability problem in PJ remains the same as the complexity of the derivability problem in the underlying logic J, which is π[p/2] -complete. This implies that the probability operators do not increase the complexity of the logic, although they arguably enrich the expressiveness of the language.

Geschlechtsspezifische Berufswünsche und Ausbildungsentscheidungen

Dass es geschlechtstypische Berufe gibt, und dass die Berufsaspirationen und die Wahl der Berufsausbildung nach der Pflichtschulzeit zwischen den Geschlechtern deutlich differieren, ist eine vielfach empirisch belegte Tatsache. Diese geschlechtstypische Segregation bei der Berufswahl und der zum ausgewählten Beruf führenden schulischen und beruflichen Ausbildung wird bei der Erklärung oftmals (pauschal) auf die geschlechtsspezifische Sozialisation und darin vermittelte Geschlechterstereotype zurückgeführt. Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden aus strukturell-individualistischer Sicht Mechanismen der geschlechtstypischen Berufsaspiration und Berufsbildungsentscheidung beschrieben, die theoriegeleitet empirisch aufgedeckt werden sollen. Für die Analysen werden Daten der drei Wellen des DAB-Panels verwendet, die für die Deutschschweiz Informationen von 203 Schulklassen mit rund 3.300 Schülerinnen und Schüler zur Verfügung stellen. Mittels dieser Paneldaten wird für Jugendliche der Deutschschweiz gezeigt, dass der sozioökonomische Status des Elternhauses, das damit einhergehende Motiv des intergenerationalen Statuserhalts sowie der Lebenslaufplanungen wichtige Beiträge zur Erklärung der Segregation der Berufswahl nach Geschlecht liefern. Diese mit dem Sozialstatus des Elternhauses verbundenen Mechanismen sind weitaus einflussreicher als die geschlechtsspezifische Sozialisation.

Leaving Home: Philo of Alexandria on the Exodus.

For Jewish-Hellenistic authors writing in Egypt, the Exodus story posed unique challenges. After all, to them Egypt was, as Philo of Alexandria states, their fatherland. How do these authors come to terms with the biblical story of liberation from Egyptian slavery and the longing for the promised land? In this chapter I am taking a close look at Philo’s detailed discussion of the Exodus and locate it within the larger context of Jewish-Hellenistic literature (Wisdom of Solomon, Ezekiel’s Exagoge). In Philo’s rewriting of the Exodus the destination of the journey is barely mentioned. Contrary to the biblical narrative, in the scene of the burning bush, as retold by Philo, God does not tell Moses where to go. Philo’s main concern is what happens in Egypt: both in biblical times and in his own days. The Exodus is nevertheless important to Philo: He reads the story allegorically as a journey from the land of the body to the realms of the mind. Such a symbolic reading permitted him to control the meaning of the Exodus and to stay, literally and figuratively, in Egypt.

Ausbildungsverbünde als Organisationsnetzwerke

Organisationsnetzwerke und die Analyse von Koordinationsmechanismen in inter-organisatorischen Netzwerken sind zu einem wichtigen Forschungsfeld innerhalb der Organisationsforschung und -soziologie geworden (Raab 2010, S. 575). Ein wichtiger Grund liegt in der betrieblichen Strategie der ‚flexiblen Spezialisierung‘ im Anschluss an die wirtschaftliche Krise ab den 1970er Jahren. Großbetriebe gerieten damals unter Druck, ihre bisherige auf Langfristigkeit und große Mengen ausgerichtete Massenproduktion neu zu organisieren und flexiblere Fertigungsprozesse einzurichten.

Die Stellung der historischen Diskurssemantik in der linguistischen Diskursforschung

Innerhalb der deutschsprachigen Diskursforschung nimmt die historische Diskurssemantik einen herausragenden Stellenwert ein, haben die Arbeiten von Dietrich Busse und Wolfgang Teubert die Etablierung des Diskursbegriffs in der deutschsprachigen Linguistik doch entscheidend vorangetrieben. Der von Busse und Teubert 1994 vorgeschlagene Diskursbegriff (Busse/Teubert 1994, S. 14, im vorliegenden Band S. 16) hat in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten gleich mehrere Ansätze einer linguistisch fundierten Diskursanalyse oder – neuerdings auch – Diskurslinguistik maßgeblich beeinflusst. Er hat die Begründung einer Tradition der textübergreifenden, korpusorientierten, inhaltsbezogenen und hermeneutisch gerahmten Diskursanalyse begünstigt, welche im wissenschaftlichen Konzert der deutschsprachigen Diskursforschung nicht mehr zu überhören ist.

On the Density and the Volume Density Property

This article gives a short introduction into the notions of density property (DP) and volume density property (VDP). Moreover we develop an effective criterion of verifying whether a given X has VDP. As an application of this method we give a new proof of the basic fact that the product of two Stein manifolds with VDP admits VDP.

Potential Future Coral Habitats Around Japan Depend Strongly on Anthropogenic CO2 Emissions

Using the results from the NCAR CSM1.4-coupled global carbon cycle– climate model under the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) emission scenarios SRES A2 and B1, we estimated the effects of both global warming and ocean acidification on the future habitats of corals in the seas around Japan during this century. As shown by Yara et al. (Biogeosciences 9:4955–4968,2012), under the high-CO₂-emission scenario (SRES A2), coral habitats will be sandwiched and narrowed between the northern region, where the saturation state of the carbonate mineral aragonite (Ωarag) decreases, and the southern region, where coral bleaching occurs. We found that under the low-emission scenario SRES B1, the coral habitats will also shrink in the northern region by the reduced Ωarag but to a lesser extent than under SRES A2, and in contrast to SRES A2, no bleaching will occur in the southern region. Therefore, coral habitats in the southern region are expected to be largely unaffected by ocean acidification or surface warming under the low-emission scenario. Our results show that potential future coral habitats depend strongly on CO₂ emissions and emphasize the importance of reducing CO₂ emissions to prevent negative impacts on coral habitats.
