This thesis deals with the investigation of charge generation and recombination processes in three different polymer:fullerene photovoltaic blends by means of ultrafast time-resolved optical spectroscopy. The first donor polymer, namely poly[N-11"-henicosanyl-2,7-carbazole-alt-5,5-(4',7'-di-2-thienyl-2',1',3'-benzothiadiazole)] (PCDTBT), is a mid-bandgap polymer, the other two materials are the low-bandgap donor polymers poly[2,6-(4,4-bis-(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b;3,4-b']-dithiophene)-alt-4,7-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole) (PCPDTBT) and poly[(4,4'-bis(2-ethylhexyl)dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]silole)-2,6-diyl-alt-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)-4,7-diyl] (PSBTBT). Despite their broader absorption, the low-bandgap polymers do not show enhanced photovoltaic efficiencies compared to the mid-bandgap system.rnrnTransient absorption spectroscopy revealed that energetic disorder plays an important role in the photophysics of PCDTBT, and that in a blend with PCBM geminate losses are small. The photophysics of the low-bandgap system PCPDTBT were strongly altered by adding a high boiling point cosolvent to the polymer:fullerene blend due to a partial demixing of the materials. We observed an increase in device performance together with a reduction of geminate recombination upon addition of the cosolvent. By applying model-free multi-variate curve resolution to the spectroscopic data, we found that fast non-geminate recombination due to polymer triplet state formation is a limiting loss channel in the low-bandgap material system PCPDTBT, whereas in PSBTBT triplet formation has a smaller impact on device performance, and thus higher efficiencies are obtained.rn

The main goals of this thesis were the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel organic semiconductors, together with their applications in electronics, such as OFETs, OPVs, and OLEDs. The results can be summarized as follows:rn1. In chapter II, two novel angular n-type molecules were presented. Their different alkyl chains play a pivotal role in the molecular orientation relative to surface. One molecule with longer branched chains is tilted with respect to the substrate, thereby resulting in poor device performance, while the other adopt an edge-on orientation with an OFET electron mobility of 0.01 cm2 V-1 s-1.rn2. In chapter III, fused bis-benzothiadiazoles with different molecular geometries, namely linear benzoquinone-fused bis(benzothiadiazole) and V-shaped sulfone-fused bis(benzothiadiazole), were shown. This work not only contributes to the diversity of electron acceptors based on bis-benzothiadiazole moieties, but also highlights the important role of molecular shape for the solid-state packing of organic conjugated materials. In chapter IV, we demonstrated the synthesis of layered acceptors via dimerization of thiadiazole end-capped acenes. Interestingly, they feature huge differences in their photophysical properties. One compound showed a new strong emission in the near-infrared region introduced by the aggregation effect. The planosymmetric compound featured intramolecular excimer (IEE) fluorescence in solution. rn3. In chapter V and VI, we have demonstrated the synthesis of novel spiro-bifluorene based asymmetric and symmetric cruciform electron acceptors with dicyanovinylene substitutions. The solar cells based on PTB7:asymmetric acceptor yields the highest PCE of 0.80%. Such results demonstrate for the first time that dicyanovinylene substituted acceptor could be an alternative to fullerene-based acceptors. rn4. In chapter VII, two novel blue-emitting compounds were shown, which consist of dihydroindenofluorenyl units and ladder-type poly-p-phenylene groups, respectively. The two novel cruciform rigid compounds present not only excellent thermal and electrochemical stability but also high PLQYs. Through analysis of their triplet energy levels, both molecules can be served as hosts for other normal fluorescent or phosphorescent materials.rn

In this thesis I present a new coarse-grained model suitable to investigate the phase behavior of rod-coil block copolymers on mesoscopic length scales. In this model the rods are represented by hard spherocylinders, whereas the coil block consists of interconnected beads. The interactions between the constituents are based on local densities. This facilitates an efficient Monte-Carlo sampling of the phase space. I verify the applicability of the model and the simulation approach by means of several examples. I treat pure rod systems and mixtures of rod and coil polymers. Then I append coils to the rods and investigate the role of the different model parameters. Furthermore, I compare different implementations of the model. I prove the capability of the rod-coil block copolymers in our model to exhibit typical micro-phase separated configurations as well as extraordinary phases, such as the wavy lamellar state, percolating structuresrnand clusters. Additionally, I demonstrate the metastability of the observed zigzag phase in our model. A central point of this thesis is the examination of the phase behavior of the rod-coil block copolymers in dependence of different chain lengths and interaction strengths between rods and coil. The observations of these studies are summarized in a phase diagram for rod-coil block copolymers. Furthermore, I validate a stabilization of the smectic phase with increasing coil fraction.rnIn the second part of this work I present a side project in which I derive a model permitting the simulation of tetrapods with and without grafted semiconducting block copolymers. The effect of these polymers is added in an implicit manner by effective interactions between the tetrapods. While the depletion interaction is described in an approximate manner within the Asakura-Oosawa model, the free energy penalty for the brush compression is calculated within the Alexander-de Gennes model. Recent experiments with CdSe tetrapods show that grafted tetrapods are clearly much better dispersed in the polymer matrix than bare tetrapods. My simulations confirm that bare tetrapods tend to aggregate in the matrix of excess polymers, while clustering is significantly reduced after grafting polymer chains to the tetrapods. Finally, I propose a possible extension enabling the simulation of a system with fluctuating volume and demonstrate its basic functionality. This study is originated in a cooperation with an experimental group with the goal to analyze the morphology of these systems in order to find the ideal morphology for hybrid solar cells.
