When the electro-optic and acousto-optic effects are combined into a single device, the resulting acousto-electro-optic (AEO) modulator shows improved flexibility to overcome some limitations of the individual modulators or their cascade combinations. By using optical interferometry, it is possible to investigate the AEO modulator behavior as a function of this applied voltage. By this way, a lithium niobate AEO modulator is positioned in one of the arms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and operates at 62 MHz frequency, which constitutes the intermediate frequency of the heterodyne interferometer. Operating the AEO modulator in the acousto-optic small diffraction efficiency regime, the photodetected signal amplitude and phase are analyzed, and the induced phase shift, transmission curve and linearity response are obtained. The experimental results show good agreement with that expected from the coupled-mode theory. The possibility of linear control of the optical phase shift by the external voltage, from 0 to 2 p radians, is demonstrated.

Ultra-fine powders of Na1-xLixNbO3 (x=0; 0.06; 0.09; 0.12) were synthesized by the Polymeric Precursors Method. Such powders had their orthorhombic structures determined by X-ray diffraction and their surface area determined by BET isotherms (less than 10 m(2) g(-1)). Densification was followed by dilatometric study. The powders, calcined at 700 degrees C for 5 h, were sintered at 1290 degrees C during 2 h under ambient atmosphere with no application of extra pressure. The samples with relative densities higher than 95% were analyzed by impedance spectroscopy at room temperature, under a signal amplitude of 1 V-rms. Dielectric constants of about 180 and dielectric loss factor of about 0.03 were measured showing small dependence with frequency. This study proposal was to evaluate the changes at a masticatory muscle temporalis and masseter, through a eletromyographic, at ponters of the right unilateral bite posterior, verifying the difference at the eletric activity between right and left sides. Twenty female volunteers, with ages between 7 and 8 (x = 7.4). The eletromyographics signals were collected in both sides in all volunteers in rest situations and in an usual isotonic mastication, right, left and bilateral and the maximun isometric constriction, which sinal was used to the eletric activity amplitude normalization. The results signed that the right masseter muscle presents an expressive statistic difference, if compared with the left masseter muscle during the left and right mastication, suggesting a right unilateral mastication. The muscle haven't gotten any expressive variance in this amplitude which remained to a proximate flat noticed in a right and habitual mastication, suggesting a right and one sided mastication during the left mastication occurs a raise of the eletric signal amplitude of the muscle left masseter. The right masseter muscle haven't gained any expressive variance, which remained in a proximate flat observed in an usual and right mastication, suggesting a muscular pattern hyperfunction next to the dental crossing.

the aim of this study was to validate the Alternate Current Biosusceptometry (ACB) for monitoring gastric contractions in rats. In vitro data were obtained to establish the relationship between ACB and the strain-gauge (SG) signal amplitude. In vivo experiments were performed on rats with magnetic markers and SGs previously implanted under the gastric serosa. The effects of the prandial state in gastric motility profiles were obtained. The correlation between in vitro signal amplitudes was strong (R = 0.989). The temporal cross-correlation between the ACB and SG signal amplitude was higher in the postprandial than in the fasting state. Irregular signal profiles, low contraction amplitudes, and smaller signal-to-noise ratios explained the poor correlation for fasting-state recordings. The contraction frequencies using ACB were 0.068 ± 0.007 Hz (postprandial) and 0.058 ± 0.007 Hz (fasting) and those using SG were 0.066 ± 0.006 Hz (postprandial) and 0.059 ± 0.008 Hz (fasting) (P < 0.003). When a magnetic tracer was ingested, there was a strong correlation and a small phasedifference between techniques. We conclude that ACB provides an accurate and sensitive technique for studies of GI motility in the rat. © 2010 IEEE.

This study aimed to analyze the electromyographic (EMG) activity of iliocostalis lumborum (IL), internal oblique (IO) and multifidus (MU) and the antagonist cocontraction (IO/MU and IO/IL) during the performance of Centering Principle of Pilates Method. Participating in this study were eighteen young and physically fit volunteers, without experience in Pilates Method, divided in two groups: low back pain group (LBPG, n = 8) and control group (CG, n = 10). Two isometric contractions of IO muscles (Centering Principle) were performed in upright sitting posture. EMG signal amplitude was calculated by Root Mean Square (RMS), which was normalized by RMS maximum value. The common area method to calculate the antagonist cocontraction index was used. MU and IO activation and IO/MU cocontraction (. p < 0.05) were higher in CG. The CG therefore showed a higher stabilizer muscles recruitment than LBPG during the performance of Centering Principle of Pilates Method. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Objective: To evaluate the maximum residual signal auto-correlation also known as pitch amplitude (PA) values in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Method. The signals of 21 Parkinson's patients were compared with 15 healthy individuals, divided according age and gender. Results: Statistical difference was seen between groups for PA, 0.39 for controls and 0.25 for PD. Normal value threshold was set as 0.3; (p <= 0.001). In the Parkinson's group 80.77%, and in the control group only 12.28%, had a PA < 0.3 demonstrating an association between these variables. The dispersion diagram for age and PA for PD individuals showed p=0.01 and r=0.54. There was no significant difference in relation to gender and PA between groups: Conclusion: the significant differences in pitch's amplitude between PD patients and healthy individuals demonstrate the methods specificity.-The results showed the need of prospective controlled studies,to improve the use and indications of residual signal auto-correlation to evaluate speech in PD patients.

The objective of this study was to analyze the electromyographic (EMG) signal behavior of rectus femoris (RF), vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL) and biceps femoris (caput longum) (BFCL) from nine women during fatiguing dynamic and isometric knee extensions tests and to determine their EMGFT (Electromyographic Fatigue Threshold). Surface electrodes, biological signal acquisition module, analogical-digital converter board and specific software were used. The RMS (Root Mean Square) values obtained from concentric phase (80 to 30 degrees) of the dynamic knee extension andfrom isometric contraction were correlated with time on each load by linear regression analysis. The respective slopes were correlated with the correspondent load to determine the EMGFT. Force (Kgf) and median frequency - MF (Hz) obtained during MIVC (Maximal Isometric Voluntary Contraction) performed before and after the fatiguing tests were calculated in Matlab environment. The results demonstrated that the endurance time decreases with higher loads the EMG amplitude increase with time and was greater at higher loads, between muscles in dynamic exercise the RF and VL showed higher slopes, and in isometric exercise the VL showed the same behavior The EMGFT values were similar in both exercises; the force values predominantly decreased after fatiguing tests; however the MF only decreased after some loads. The protocols proposed allowed standardizing protocols at least to induce the fatigue process and to determine the EMGFT as an endurance indicative, which may be used to evaluate the effectiveness of rehabilitative or training interventions indicated to reduce muscle weakness and fatigue.

The Virgo detector is a kilometer-scale interferometer for gravitational wave detection located near Pisa (Italy). About 13 months of data were accumulated during four science runs (VSR1, VSR2, VSR3 and VSR4) between May 2007 and September 2011, with increasing sensitivity. In this paper, the method used to reconstruct, in the range 10 Hz-10 kHz, the gravitational wave strain time series h(t) from the detector signals is described. The standard consistency checks of the reconstruction are discussed and used to estimate the systematic uncertainties of the h(t) signal as a function of frequency. Finally, an independent setup, the photon calibrator, is described and used to validate the reconstructed h(t) signal and the associated uncertainties. The systematic uncertainties of the h(t) time series are estimated to be 8% in amplitude. The uncertainty of the phase of h(t) is 50 mrad at 10 Hz with a frequency dependence following a delay of 8 mu s at high frequency. A bias lower than 4 mu s and depending on the sky direction of the GW is also present.
