The effect of concentration on the structure of SnO2 colloids in aqueous suspension, on their spatial correlation and on the gelation process was studied by small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). The shape of the experimental SAXS curves varies with suspension concentration. For diluted suspensions ([SnO2] less than or equal to 0.13 mol L-1), SAXS results indicate the presence of colloidal fractal aggregates with an internal correlation length xi congruent to 20 Angstrom, without any noticeable spatial correlation between them. This suggests that the aggregates are spatially arranged without any significant interaction like in ideal gas structures. For higher concentrations ([SnO2] = 0.16, 0.32, and 0.64 mol L-1), the colloidal aggregates are larger (xi = 24 Angstrom) and exhibit a certain degree of spatial correlation between them. The pair correlation function corresponding to the sol with the highest concentration (0.92 mol L-1) reveals a rather strong short range order between aggregates, characteristic of a fluid-like structure, with an average nearest-neighbor distance between aggregates d(1) = 125 Angstrom and an average second-neighbor distance d(2) = 283 Angstrom. The pair distribution function remains essentially invariant during the sol-gel transition, suggesting that gelation involves the formation of a few points of connection between the aggregates resulting in a gel network constituted by essentially linear chains of clusters..

An investigation has been conducted to examine the morphological influence on fatigue life of low carbon steel with dual phase microstructure. The results showed that dual-phase microstructure, composed by ferrite and martensite had superior symmetrical bending fatigue strength when compared with ferrite-pearlite steel. Through those tests, evidences of different mechanisms were verified (such as ferrite cyclic hardening, slip band formation and beginning of crack nucleation and propagation). Based on the fatigue tests results, various mechanisms stages were discussed associated with different microstructure morphology. Copyright (C) 1996 Published by Elsevier B.V. Limited.

Basic or acid oxides, used as heterogeneous promoters of carbonylruthenium catalysts in liquid-phase hydrocarbonylation reactions on oxygenated substrates, strongly affect the activity and selectivity of the catalytic system. Concurrent or successive reactions of simple carbonylation, homologation, hydrogenation to hydrocarbons, and etherification take place to varying extents. Carbonylation and etherification are favored by acid oxides and homologation and hydrogenation by basic oxides. This behavior is related to the formation and stabilization by the oxides of H+ and H- hydridocarbonylruthenium catalytic species, whose relative concentrations in solution depend on the nature of the oxide. Heterogeneous oxides are easily separated and recycled from the reaction mixture. Their use simplifies the catalytic system and allows one to direct the catalytic process toward the target product.

We have pointed out that zinc based particles obtained from ethanolic solution of a zinc acetate derivative (zinc oxy-acetate, Zn4O(Ac)(6)) are a mixture of nanometer sized ZnO, zinc oxy-acetate, and zinc hydroxide double salt (Zn-HDS). The knowledge of the mechanisms involved in the formation of ZnO and Zn-HDS phases, and the evolution of Zn species in reaction medium was monitored in situ during 14 h by simultaneous measurements of UV-vis absorption and extended X-ray absorption fine structures (EXAFS) spectra. This spectroscopic monitoring was initialized just after the addition of an ethanolic lithium hydroxide solution ([LiOH]/[Zn] = 0. 1) to the reaction medium kept under controlled temperature (40 degrees C). This study points out the first direct evidence of the reaction between ZnO nanoparticles and unreacted zinc oxy-acetate to form a Zn-HDS phase. The dissolution of ZnO and the reprecipitation of Zn-HDS are induced by the gradual release of water mainly produced by ethanol esterification well evidenced by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectroscopy and FT-IR measurements.

Photoluminescence (PL) behavior of SrBi2Nb2O9 (SBN) powders was explained by means of beta-Bi2O3 phase on the SBN lattice. Oxygen vacancies and recombination of electrons holes in the valence band lead to the formation of [NbO5 center dot V-O(x)], [NbO5 center dot V-O(center dot)] and [NbO5 center dot V-O(center dot center dot)] complex clusters which are the main reason for the PL at room temperature. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy were used as tools to investigate the structural changes in SBN lattice allowing to correlate [NbO5 center dot V-O(center dot)]/[NbO6](') ratio with the evolution of the visible PL emission in the SBN powders. The anelastic relaxation (elastic energy loss and Young modulus) of nearly stoichiometric La2CuO4+delta with LTO structure was measured. Extraordinarily intense effects are present below room temperature in the elastic dynamic susceptibility, indicating relaxational dynamics of a relevant fraction of the lattice. The involved degrees of freedom are identified as rotations of the CuO6 octahedra. Two distinct processes are found at frequencies around 1 kKz: one is observed around 150 K and is characterized by a mean activation energy of 2800 K; the second one occurs below 30 K and is governed by atomic tunnelling. Two explanations are proposed for the faster process: i) formation of fluctuating LTT domains on a scale of few atomic cells; ii) the LTO phase is a dynamical Jahn-Teller phase with all the octahedra tunneling between two LTT-like tilts. In both cases there would be important implications regarding the mechanisms giving rise to charge nanophase separation and strong electron-phonon coupling.

We study e+-Na, e+-K, and e+-Rb scattering using the close coupling approach in the static and coupled static expansion schemes. We calculate partial wave elastic scattering phase shifts and total elastic and Ps formation cross sections up to an incident positron energy of 100 eV. The effect of the positronium formation channel on the elastic channel is found to be strong in all cases up to an incident positron energy of 10 eV. We also make an estimate of the total cross section which exhibits a minimum as a function of energy at low energies.

In this work, we investigated the formation of porous silica matrix obtained by hydrothermal treatment under saturated steam condition from Pyrex (R) glass. This investigation was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD) and Raman microscopy. We observed the presence of connected and homogeneously distributed pores in a non-crystalline silica phase and a detectable interface between silica and remnant glass phases resulting in a framework similar to asymmetric membranes. The results indicate that the process of phase separation takes place at lower temperature than that of glass-transition on the surface of the glass phase. Essential reaction between water and silica at supercritical condition together with the formation and leaching of soluble phase contribute to obtain porous silica matrix, (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. The effect of lead excess on the pyrochlore-type formation in Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 (PMN) powders has been investigated. The polymeric precursor method was used in the synthesis of the columbite in association to the partial oxalate method to synthesize the PMN powder samples. Structure refinement of the columbite precursor and PMN powders was carried out using the Rietveld method. The quantitative phase analysis showed that the amount of perovskite phase is not affected by PbO excess, but a great excess drives the pyrochlore-type formation so that 3 wt.% of PbO causes the predominance of Mg-containing pyrochlore phase. Using the refined data obtained from the Rietveld refinement, the compositional fluctuation in the perovskite phase was calculated from Nb/Mg ratio values and Pb occupation factor. Mg inclusion occurs concomitant with Ph one into PMN perovskite phase and this effect is directed by PbO excess during powder synthesis. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The electrochemical behavior of Cu-xAl alloys, with 11 wt%less than or equal to x less than or equal to 15wt%, in 0.5 M H2SO4 was studied by means of open-circuit potential decay measurements, quasi-stationary and fast cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Some of the alloys (x less than or equal to 14%), when quenched formed martensitic structures. Alloys with greater than or equal to 13% showed a little square-shaped phase when quenched from temperatures around 800 degrees C. It was observed that in sulfuric medium, these formations were dealuminized differently than the martensitic phase. The values of the rest potentials are more influenced by the heat treatment rather than by the alloy composition. An anodic Tafel slope of ca. 60 mV/decade was observed for all the alloys, independently of the heat treatment. This is explained in terms of a competition between two processes: copper oxidation and copper(I) deproportionation. In the cyclic voltammetric experiments it was observed an anodic current peak, related with copper oxidation with a possible formation of some interfacial species, and a cathodic current peak during the reverse potential scan, associated with the reduction of soluble species and/or of the film. The AC Impedance data were interpreted in terms of electric equivalent circuits.

Pseudoternary phase diagrams, at 25 degrees C, were constructed for the systems soy bean oil (SBO)/surfactant/water, with single anionic sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT), nonionic monoolein (MO) and mixtures of these surfactants, showing the isotropic phase of W/O microemulsions (MEs). The area of ME formation in the phase diagrams was shown to be dependent of the relative amount of surfactants, being larger for MO:AOT equals to 2:1. Rheological and dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies indicated that the viscosity of the isotropic ME phase exhibited two different behaviors depending on composition. The viscosity of dry MEs initially decreased with increasing amount of water following a dilution line in the phase diagram, i.e., a constant surfactant:SBO percentage ratio. As the water content increased the relative viscosity attained a minimum and then increased. This minimum could be related to the transition between two ME regions, L-2 and L'(2), having different characteristics. DLS measurements confirm the existence of ordinary W/O ME droplets in the L-2 region and suggest the existence of another structure in the L'(2) region. The size of the MEs droplets in L-2 phase ranges from 3.6 to 16.5 nm, depending on composition of SBO, surfactant and water. Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) also indicates the existence of structures with different characteristics, for the SAXS curves exhibit a typical micelle asymmetrical peak at low scattering vector q for MEs in L-2 but a symmetrical correlation peak at higher q vector in L'(2). Zn7Sb2O12 is known to adopt an inverse spinel crystal structure, in which Zn2+ occupies the eight tetrahedral positions and Sb5+ and Zn2+ randomly occupy the 16 octahedral positions. Samples of Zn7-xNixSb2O12 (X = 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4) were synthesized using a modified polymeric precursor method, known as the Pechini method. The crystal structure of the powders was characterized by Rietveld refinement with X-ray diffraction data. The results show that for X = 0, 1, and 2 Ni substitutes for Zn2+ in the octahedral sites, and that for X = 3 and 4 it is assumed that Ni2+ replaces Zn2+ ions in both the octahedral and tetrahedral positions. It is also observed for x = 3 and 4 the formation of two spinel phases. (C) 2003 International Centre for Diffraction Data.

Gallium-doped zinc oxide (ZnO:Ga 1, 2 3, 4 and 5 at%) samples were prepared in powder form by modifying the Pechini method. The formation of zinc gallate (ZnGa2O4) With the spinel crystal structure was observed even in ZnO:Ga 1 at% by X-ray diffraction. The presence of ZnGa2O4 in ZnO:Ga samples was also evidenced by luminescence spectroscopy through its blue emission at 430 nm, assigned to charge transfer between Ga3+ at regular octahedral symmetry and its surrounding O2- ions. The amount of ZnGa2O4 increases as the dopant concentration increases, as observed by the quantitative phase analysis by the Rietveld method. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Phase separation suppression due to external biaxial strain is observed in InxGa1-xN alloy layers by Raman scattering spectroscopy. The effect is taking place in thin epitaxial layers pseudomorphically grown by molecular-beam epitaxy on unstrained GaN(001) buffers. Ab initio calculations carried out for the alloy free energy predict and Raman measurements confirm that biaxial strain suppress the formation of phase-separated In-rich quantum dots in the InxGa1-xN layers. Since quantum dots are effective radiative recombination centers in InGaN, we conclude that strain quenches an important channel of light emission in optoelectronic devices based on pseudobinary group-III nitride semiconductors.
