Background: Halitosis has been correlated with the concentration of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) produced in the oral cavity by metabolic activity of bacteria colonizing the periodontal area and the dorsum of the tongue. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is some relationship between the presence of N-benzoyl-DL-arginine-2-napthylamide (BANA)positive species Treponema denticola, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Bacteroides forsythus and clinical and oral malodor parameters.Methods: Twenty-one subjects (21 to 59 years old) with probing depths (PD) >3.0 mm and 20 subjects (21 to 63 years old) with PD less than or equal to3.0 mm (controls) participated. The quality of the mouth air was assessed organoleptically, and a portable sulfide monitor was used to measure the concentration of VSC. Clinical parameters, plaque index (PI) and gingival index (GI), were obtained from 6 teeth. Samples for BANA test were taken from the dorsal surface of the tongue, saliva, and the 6 reference teeth.Results: the scores of PI, GI, subgingival samples that tested positive for BANA hydrolyzing species, organoleptic ratings, and VSC values were significantly higher in the subjects with PD >3.0 mm (P <0.01, Mann-Whitney U test). There was a correlation between BANA hydrolysis by subgingival plaque bacteria and VSC values (r = 0.55, P <0.01), and between GI and VSC values (r = 0.48, P <0.05) in patients with PD >3.0 mm. There was no significant correlation between these parameters in the control group.Conclusion: These results confirm that the BANA hydrolyzing bacteria in the subgingival plaque are an important source of malodor production in the oral cavity.

Irreversible photoexpansion and photobleaching effect has been observed in amorphous Ga10Ge25S65 glass when its surface was exposed to light with energy greater than the band gap, 3.52 eV. The magnitude of the expansion of GaGeS glasses depends on the exposure conditions. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) have been used to identify the chemical nature of the glass samples before and after illumination. The quantitative analysis of the EXAFS data leads to a two-shell model of 0.5 oxygen atoms at 2.01 Angstrom and 3.6 sulfur atoms at a 2.20 Angstrom. RBS technique demonstrated that chemical composition of the glass surface after irradiation is oxygen rich. The existence of Ge-O bonds in the glass after illumination was also confirmed by infrared measurements. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The biooxidation of ferrous ion into ferric ion by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans can be potentially used for the removal of H2S from industrial gases. In this work, Fe3+ ions were obtained through the oxidation of Fe2+ using the LR strain of At. ferrooxidans immobilized in PVC stands in a pilot-scale bioreactor, while H2S was removed in an absorption tower equipped with Rasching rings. At. ferrooxidans LR strain cells were immobilized by inoculating the bacterium in a Fe2+-mineral medium and percolating it through the support. After complete Fe2+ oxidation, which took around 90 h, the reactor was washed several times with sulfuric acid (pH 1.7) before a new cycle was started. Four additional cycles using fresh Fe2+ mineral medium were then run. During these colonization cycles, the time required for complete iron oxidation decreased, dropping to about 60 h in the last cycle. The batch experiments in the H2S gas removal trials resulted in a gas removal rate of about 98-99% under the operational conditions employed. In the continuous experiments with the bioreactor coupled to the gas absorption column, a gas removal efficiency of almost 100% was reached after 500 min. Precipitate containing mainly sulfur formed during the experimental trial was identified by EDX. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Silica gel with a specific surface area of 365 m(2).g(-1) and an average pore diameter of 60 Angstrom was chemically modified with 2-mercaptoimidazole. The degree of functionalization of the covalently attached molecule, (drop SiO)(3)(CH2)(3) - MI, where MI is the 2-mercaptoimidazole bound to the silica surface by a propyl group, was 0.58 mmolg.(-1). In individual metal adsorption experiments from aqueous solutions by the batch procedure, the affinity order was Hg(II)much greater than Cd-II > Cu-II approximate to Zn-II approximate to Pb-II > Mn-II at solution pHs between 4 and 7. Due to the high affinity by the sulfur atom, Hg-II is strongly bound to the functional groups. When solution containing a mixture of Hg-II, Cd-II, Cu-II, Zn-II, Pb-II, and Mn-II ions was passed through a column packed with the adsorbent, Hg-II was the only one whose adsorption and elution was not affected by the presence of other ions.

Synthesis and characterization, including data on thermal decomposition, are reported for the complexes of S,S'-methylenebis(cysteine) (djenkolic acid) with copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II): CuC(7)H(12)N(2)O(4)S(2) [I]; ZnC(7)H(12)N(2)O(4)S(2) [II] and CdC(7)H(12)N(2)O(4)S(2) [III] X-ray diffraction showed that the compounds are isostructural and belong to a monoclinic system. According to IR spectra, COO, NH(2) groups and bridging sulfur atoms are the main coordination sites.

Er3+ -containing gallium-lanthanum oxysulfide glasses have been prepared from Ga2O3 and La2S3 in a sulfur/argon reactive atmosphere. The samples have been characterized by absorption and emission spectroscopy and IR emission kinetics. Er3+ electronic transition intensities have been analyzed in the light of the Judd-Ofelt formalism, and quantum efficiencies evaluated for the Er3+ emission at 1.5 and 2.7 mum. The results so obtained suggest that these glasses display favorable properties concerning IR optical applications. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Photoexpansion and photobleaching effects have been examined in glass compositions Ga10Ge25S65 and Ga5Ge25As5S65. Such compositions are promising for optical storage and planar waveguide applications. To evaluate the photoinduced effect, samples were exposed to 351 nm light, varying power density (3-10 W/cm(2)) and exposure time (0-120 min). The exposed areas have been analyzed using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and an expansion of 800 nm is observed for composition Ga10Ge25S65 exposed during 120 min and 5 W/cm(2) power density. The optical absorption edge measured by a spectrophotometer indicates a blue shift (80 nm) after illumination in the composition Ga10Ge25S65. The morphology was examined using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chemical compositions measured using a energy dispersive analyzer (EDX) indicate an increase of the number of sulfur atoms in the irradiated area. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. 1-Benzoyl-3-benzylguanidine and 1-benzoyl-3-benzyl-O-ethylisourea were synthesized in good yields (68 and 76%, respectively) from 1-benzoyl-3-benzylthiourea and benzoyl-ethylthiocarbamate in dry media conditions using KF-Al2O3 under microwave irradiation. Strong nucleophilic amines promoted the sulfur elimination by attack on the thiocarbonyl group in both thiourea and thiocarbamates to afford guanidines and isourea, respectively. Transesterification products were obtained from p-TsOH catalyzed reaction of thiocarbamate with alcohols under MW-solvent-free conditions. Very important non-purely thermal MW specific effects were evidenced and attributed to stabilization by coulombic interactions between materials and waves. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. This article addresses the establishment of integrated diagnostics and recommendation system (DRIS) standards for irrigated bean crops (Phaseolus vulgaris) and compares leaf concentrations and productivity in low- and high-productivity populations. The work was carried out in Santa Fe de Goias, Goias State, Brazil, in the agricultural years 1999/2000 and 2000/2001. For the nutritional diagnosis, leaf samples were collected, and leaf concentrations of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sulfur (S), boron (B), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) were established in 100 commercial bean crops. A database was set up listing the leaf nutrient content and the respective productivities, subdivided into two subpopulations, high and low productivity, using a bean yield value of 3000 kg ha-1 to separate these subpopulations. Sufficiency values found in the high-productivity population matched only for the micronutrients B and Zn. The nutritional balance among the populations studied was coherent and was lower in the high-productivity population. The DRIS standards proposed for irrigated bean farming were efficient in evaluating the nutritional status of the crop areas studied. Calcium, Cu, and S were found to be the least available nutrients, indicating high response potential for the fertilizing using these nutrients.
