A time reversal symmetric regularized electron exchange model was used to elastic scattering, target elastic Ps excitations and target inelastic excitation of hydrogen in a five state coupled model. A singlet Ps-H-S-wave resonance at 4.01 eV of width 0.15 eV and a P-wave resonance at 5.08 eV of width 0.004 eV were obtained using this model. The effect on the convergence of the coupled-channel scheme due to the inclusion of the excited Ps and H states was also analyzed.

In this article we study the existence of shock wave solutions for systems of partial differential equations of hydrodynamics with viscosity in one space dimension in the context of Colombeau's theory of generalized functions. This study uses the equality in the strict sense and the association of generalized functions (that is the weak equality). The shock wave solutions are given in terms of generalized functions that have the classical Heaviside step function as macroscopic aspect. This means that solutions are sought in the form of sequences of regularizations to the Heaviside function that have to satisfy part of the equations in the strict sense and part of the equations in the sense of association.

A direct version of the boundary element method (BEM) is developed to model the stationary dynamic response of reinforced plate structures, such as reinforced panels in buildings, automobiles, and airplanes. The dynamic stationary fundamental solutions of thin plates and plane stress state are used to transform the governing partial differential equations into boundary integral equations (BIEs). Two sets of uncoupled BIEs are formulated, respectively, for the in-plane state ( membrane) and for the out-of-plane state ( bending). These uncoupled systems are joined to formamacro-element, in which membrane and bending effects are present. The association of these macro-elements is able to simulate thin-walled structures, including reinforced plate structures. In the present formulation, the BIE is discretized by continuous and/or discontinuous linear elements. Four displacement integral equations are written for every boundary node. Modal data, that is, natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes of reinforced plates, are obtained from information contained in the frequency response functions (FRFs). A specific example is presented to illustrate the versatility of the proposed methodology. Different configurations of the reinforcements are used to simulate simply supported and clamped boundary conditions for the plate structures. The procedure is validated by comparison with results determined by the finite element method (FEM).

The number of zeros in (- 1, 1) of the Jacobi function of second kind Q(n)((alpha, beta)) (x), alpha, beta > - 1, i.e. The second solution of the differential equation(1 - x(2))y (x) + (beta - alpha - (alpha + beta + 2)x)y' (x) + n(n + alpha + beta + 1)y(x) = 0,is determined for every n is an element of N and for all values of the parameters alpha > - 1 and beta > - 1. It turns out that this number depends essentially on alpha and beta as well as on the specific normalization of the function Q(n)((alpha, beta)) (x). Interlacing properties of the zeros are also obtained. As a consequence of the main result, we determine the number of zeros of Laguerre's and Hermite's functions of second kind. We study the phase diagram for a dilute Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superfluid Fermi-Fermi mixture (of distinct mass) at zero temperature using energy densities for the superfluid fermions in one (1D), two (2D), and three (3D) dimensions. We also derive the dynamical time-dependent nonlinear Euler-Lagrange equation satisfied by the mixture in one dimension using this energy density. We obtain the linear stability conditions for the mixture in terms of fermion densities of the components and the interspecies Fermi-Fermi interaction. In equilibrium there are two possibilities. The first is that of a uniform mixture of the two components, the second is that of two pure phases of two components without any overlap between them. In addition, a mixed and a pure phase, impossible in 1D and 2D, can be created in 3D. We also obtain the conditions under which the uniform mixture is stable from an energetic consideration. The same conditions are obtained from a modulational instability analysis of the dynamical equations in 1D. Finally, the 1D dynamical equations for the system are solved numerically and by variational approximation (VA) to study the bright solitons of the system for attractive interspecies Fermi-Fermi interaction in 1D. The VA is found to yield good agreement to the numerical result for the density profile and chemical potential of the bright solitons. The bright solitons are demonstrated to be dynamically stable. The experimental realization of these Fermi-Fermi bright solitons seems possible with present setups.

We study the existence of homoclic solutions for reversible Hamiltonian systems taking the family of differential equations u(iv) + au - u +f(u, b) = 0 as a model, where fis an analytic function and a, b real parameters. These equations are important in several physical situations such as solitons and in the existence of finite energy stationary states of partial differential equations, but no assumptions of any kind of discrete symmetry is made and the analysis here developed can be extended to others Hamiltonian systems and successfully employed in situations where standard methods fail. We reduce the problem of computing these orbits to that of finding the intersection of the unstable manifold with a suitable set and then apply it to concrete situations. We also plot the homoclinic values configuration in parameters space, giving a picture of the structural distribution and a geometrical view of homoclinic bifurcations. In this paper we discuss the algebraic construction of the mKdV hierarchy in terms of an affine Lie algebra (s) over capl(2). An interesting novelty araises from the negative even grade sector of the affine algebra leading to nonlinear integro-differential equations admiting non-trivial vacuum configuration. These solitons solutions are constructed systematically from generalization of the dressing method based on non zero vacua. The sub-hierarchies admiting such class of solutions are classified.

A simple mathematical model is developed to explain the appearance of oscillations in the dispersal of larvae from the food source in experimental populations of certain species of blowflies. The life history of the immature stage in these flies, and in a number of other insects, is a system with two populations, one of larvae dispersing on the soil and the other of larvae that burrow in the soil to pupate. The observed oscillations in the horizontal distribution of buried pupae at the end of the dispersal process are hypothesized to be a consequence of larval crowding at a given point in the pupation substrate. It is assumed that dispersing larvae are capable of perceiving variations in density of larvae buried at a given point in the substrate of pupation, and that pupal density may influence pupation of dispersing larvae. The assumed interaction between dispersing larvae and the larvae that are burrowing to pupate is modeled using the concept of non-local effects. Numerical solutions of integro-partial differential equations developed to model density-dependent immature dispersal demonstrate that variation in the parameter that governs the non-local interaction between dispersing and buried larvae induces oscillations in the final horizontal distribution of pupae. The element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) is a very attractive technique for solutions of partial differential equations, since it makes use of nodal point configurations which do not require a mesh. Therefore, it differs from FEM-like approaches by avoiding the need of meshing, a very demanding task for complicated geometry problems. However, the imposition of boundary conditions is not straightforward, since the EFGM is based on moving-least-squares (MLS) approximations which are not necessarily interpolants. This feature requires, for instance, the introduction of modified functionals with additional unknown parameters such as Lagrange multipliers, a serious drawback which leads to poor conditionings of the matrix equations. In this paper, an interpolatory formulation for MLS approximants is presented: it allows the direct introduction of boundary conditions, reducing the processing time and improving the condition numbers. The formulation is applied to the study of two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic flow problems, and the computed results confirm the accuracy and correctness of the proposed formulation. In this work we discuss some exactly solvable Klein-Gordon equations. We basically discuss the existence of classes of potentials with different nonrelativistic limits, but which shares the intermediate effective Schroedinger differential equation. We comment about the possible use of relativistic exact solutions as approximations for nonrelativistic inexact potentials. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
