This work describes the synthesis and characterization of two novel Pd(II) pyrazolyl complexes of the type [PdX2(HdmPz)(2)](n) {X=SCN- (1), N-3(-) (2); HdmPz=3,5-dimethylpyrazole} that self-assemble through N-H...NCS or N-H...NNN hydrogen bonds to yield infinite one-dimensional chains, as confirmed by single crystal X-ray study on 1. The expected solid state polymeric structure for 2 is slowly broken up in CHCl3 Solution, leading to an equilibrium mixture of cis and trans-[Pd(N-3)(2)(HdmPz)(2)] monomers, as demonstrated by time-dependent IR and NMR studies. Chitin hydrogels of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (VP) were prepared by means of the hydrogen peroxide graft copolymerization process. The effect of the VP grafted chain on water diffusion through the biopolymer was studied. Fourier transform infrared spectra of the VP-g-Ch showed an increase in the intensities of the hydroxyl and carbonyl stretching bands indicating a reduction in the hydrogen bonding of chitin. An investigation was undertaken regarding the adsorption of nickel(II) and cadmium(II) ions from aqueous solutions by the VP grafted chitin and the effects of the grafting degree on the Cd2+ and Ni2+ sorption were studied. The Cd2+ and Ni2+ adsorption equilibrium data correlate well with the Freundlich equation. The results indicate that the Ch-g-VP graft copolymer under investigation is a potentially powerful chelating material that can be employed for Ni2+ and Cd2+ ion removal from wastewater effluents. In this work, a hydrophilic clay, Na-montmorillonite from Wyoming, USA, was rendered organophilic by exchanging the inorganic interlayer cations for hexaclecyltrimethylammonium ions (HDTA), with the formulae of [(CH3)(3)N(C16H33)](+) ion. Based on fact that organo-clay has high affinities for non-ionic organic molecules, 1,3,4-thiadiazole-2,5-dithiol was loaded oil the HDTA-montmorillonite surface, resulting in the 1,3,4-thiadiazole-2,5-dithiol-HDTA-montmorillonite complex (TDD-organo-clay).The following properties of TDD-organo-clay are discussed: selective adsorption of heavy metal ions measured by batch and chromatographic column techniques, and utilization as preconcentration agent in a chemically modified carbon paste electrode (CMCPE) for determination of mercury(II).The main point of this paper is the construction of a selective sensor, a carbon paste electrode modified with TDD-organo-clay, its properties and its application to the determination of mercury(II) ions, as this element belongs to the most toxic metals. The chemical selectivity of this functional group and the selectivity of voltammetry were combined for preconcentration and determination. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The circumventricular structures of the central nervous system and nitric oxide are involved in arterial blood pressure control, and general anesthesia may stimulate the central renin-angiotensin system. We therefore investigated the central role of angiotensin 11 and nitric oxide on the regulation of systemic arterial blood pressure in conscious and anesthetized rats. METHODS: Rats with stainless steel cannulae implanted into their lateral ventricle were studied. We injected the AT(1) and AT(2) angiotensin 11 receptor antagonists, losartan and PD123319, L-NAME, 7-nitroindazole (nitric oxide synthetase inhibitors), and FK409 (nitric oxide donor agent) into the lateral ventricles. Mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) was recorded in conscious and zoletil-anesthetized rats. RESULTS: Mean +/- (SEM) baseline MAP was 117.5 +/- 2 mm Hg. Angiotensin II injected into the brain lateral ventricle increased MAP from 136.5 +/- 2 min Hg to 138.5 +/- 4 mm Hg (Delta 16 +/- 3 mm Hg to Delta 21 +/- 3 mm Hg) for all experimental groups versus control from 116 +/- 2 mm Hg to 120 +/- 3 mm Hg (Delta 3 +/- 1 mm Hg to A5 +/- 2 mm Hg) (P < 0.05). L-NAME or 7-nitroindazole enhanced the angiotensin II pressor effect (P < 0.05). Prior injection of losartan and PD123319 decreased the angiotensin 11 pressor effect and the enhancement effect of L-NAME and 7-nitroindazole (P < 0.05). Zoletil anesthesia did not interfere with the effects of angiotensin 11, AT,, AT2 antagonists, or nitric oxide synthetase inhibitors. CONCLUSIONS: Endogenous nitric oxide functions tonically as a central inhibitory modulator of the angiotensinergic system. AT, and AT2 receptors influence the angiotensin 11 central control of arterial blood pressure. Zoletil anesthesia did not interfere with these effects. (Anesth Analg 2007;105:1293-7)

1. Intracerebroventricular (I.C.V.) infusion (60 ng h-1) of Isoleu5-angiotensin II (Isoleu5-AngII) and des-amine-angiotensin II (des-amine-AngII) in rats caused increased drinking behaviour and an increase in arterial blood pressure.2. Des-amine-AngII caused similar increases in heart rate and arterial blood pressure as AngII.3. Previous I.C.V. injection of the antagonists [Leu8]-AngII, des-amine-[Leu8]-AngII and octanoyl-[Leu8]-AngII prevented the increases in heart rate and blood pressure produced by I.C.V. infusion of AngII and caused partial reduction of the dipsogenic response.4. The three antagonists had no effect on the increase in arterial blood pressure and heart rate caused by des-amine-AngII. The drinking response was reduced by previous injection of [Leu8]-AngII and des-amine-[Leu8]-AngII but not by octanoyl-[Leu8]-AngII.5. In conclusion, Isoleu5-AngII and des-amine-AngII increase drinking behaviour, arterial blood pressure and heart rate when infused into the cerebral ventricle of rats. The study with the antagonists showed that des-amine-AngII probably binds more strongly to AngII-receptors.

Silica gel with a specific surface area of 365 m(2).g(-1) and an average pore diameter of 60 Angstrom was chemically modified with 2-mercaptoimidazole. The degree of functionalization of the covalently attached molecule, (drop SiO)(3)(CH2)(3) - MI, where MI is the 2-mercaptoimidazole bound to the silica surface by a propyl group, was 0.58 mmolg.(-1). In individual metal adsorption experiments from aqueous solutions by the batch procedure, the affinity order was Hg(II)much greater than Cd-II > Cu-II approximate to Zn-II approximate to Pb-II > Mn-II at solution pHs between 4 and 7. Due to the high affinity by the sulfur atom, Hg-II is strongly bound to the functional groups. When solution containing a mixture of Hg-II, Cd-II, Cu-II, Zn-II, Pb-II, and Mn-II ions was passed through a column packed with the adsorbent, Hg-II was the only one whose adsorption and elution was not affected by the presence of other ions.

Brazil has many species of spiders belonging to Araneidae family however, very little is known about the composition, chemical structure and mechanisms of action of the main venom components of these spiders. The main objective of this work was to isolate and to perform the chemical characterization of a novel beta-carboline toxin from the venom of the spider Parawixia bistriata, a typical species of the Brazilian 'cerrado'. The toxin was purified by RP-HPLC and structurally elucidated by using a combination of different spectroscopic techniques (UV, ESI-MS/MS and H-1 NMR), which permitted the assignment of the molecular structure of a novel spider venom toxin, identified as 1-4-guanidinobutoxy-6-hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-beta-carboline, and referred to here as PwTx-II. This compound is toxic to insects (LD50 = 12 +/- 3 eta g/mg honeybee), neurotoxic, convulsive and lethal to rats (LD50 = 9.75 mg/kg of male Wistar rat). (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The coordination polymers [Cd(mu-Cl)(2)(HPz)(2)](n) (1) and [Cd(mu-1,3-SCN)(2)(HPz)(2)](n) (2) (HPz = pyrazole) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Both complexes exhibited chain structures made by linear arrays of Cd(II) bridged by chloro (1) or inversely related 1,3-SCN groups (2) and the pyrazole ligands at the apical. sites. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds and another non-covalent interactions are responsible for the self-assembly of linear chains into 2D networks. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The influence of structural features of tropical river humic substances (HS) on their capability to reduce mercury(II) in aqueous solutions was studied. The HS investigated were conventionally isolated from Rio Negro water-Amazonas State/Brazil by means of the collector XAD 8. In addition, the isolated HS were on-line fractionated by tangential-flow multistage ultrafiltration (nominal molecular-weight cut-offs: 100, 50, 30, 10, 5 kDa) and characterized by potentiometry and UV/VIS spectroscopy. The reduction of Hg(II) ions to elemental Hg by size-fractions of Rio Negro HS was assessed by cold-vapor AAS (CVAAS). UV/VIS spectrometry revealed that the fractions of high molecular-size (F-1 > 100 kDa and F-2: 50-100 kDa) have a higher aromaticity compared to the fractions of small molecular-size (F-5: 5-10 kDa, F-6: < 5 kDa). In contrast, the potentiometric study showed different concentration of functional groups in the studied HS fractions. The reduction of Hg(II) by aquatic HS fractions at pH 5 proceeded in two steps (I, II) of slow first order kinetics (t(1/2) of I: 160 min, t(1/2) of II: 300 min) weakly influenced by the molecular-size, in contrast to the differing degree of Hg(II) reduction (F-5 > F-2 > > F-1 > F-3 > F-4 > > F-6). Accordingly, Hg(II) ions were preferably reduced by HS molecules having a relatively high ratio of phenolic/carboxylic groups and a small concentration of sulfur. From these results a complex 'competition' between reduction and complexation of mercury(II) by aquatic HS occurring in tropical rivers such as the Rio Negro can be suggested. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. The evolution of elemental Hg from its environmental compounds has already been supposed to be an important process within the global mercury cycle. The present study characterizes the abiotic reduction of Hg(II) ions by typical river humic substances (HS) conventionally pre-isolated by the adsorbent XAD 8 from the Rio Negro near Manaus, Brazil. For the investigation of this reduction process a special reaction and Hg(0) trapping unit combined with cold-vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS) was developed. Preconcentration of traces of mercury(II), if required, was obtained by a home-made FIA system using microcolumns filled with the Hg(II)-selective collector CheliteS(R) (Serva Company). The effect of environmentally relevant parameters such as the pH value, the Hg(II)/HS ratio and the HS concentration on the I-IE;(II) reduction process was studied as a function of the time. The Hg(0) production was highest at pH 8.0 and in the case of decreasing HS amounts (0.5 mg) when about 65% of initially 1.0 mug Hg(H) was reduced within 50 h. Moreover, the reduction efficiency of HS towards HE;(II) strongly depended on the HS concentration but hardly on the Hg(II)/HS ratio. The reduction kinetics followed a relatively slow two-step first-order mechanism with formal rate constants of about 0.1 and 0.02 h(-1), respectively. Based on these findings the possible relevance of the abiotic evolution of mercury in humic-rich aquatic environments is considered. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.
