In a biological and phytochemical study on the leaves of Psychotria spectabilis Steyerm., seven compounds were isolated and identified from the CHCl3/MeOH (2:1, v/v) and MeOH extracts. Among the isolates were two diterpenes, solidagenone and deoxysolidagenone; three coumarins, coumarin, umbelliferone, and psoralene; and two flavonols, quercetin and quercetrin. Biological evaluations showed that diterpenes and coumarins exhibited antifungal activity against the filamentous fungi Cladosporium cladosporioides (Fresen) de Vries and C sphaerospermum Penzig. Solidagenone and psoralene also displayed selective cytotoxic activity against Rad 52Y mutant yeast strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this paper, the isolation, structure elucidation, and bioactivity results of these compounds are reported.

The AlMCM-41 material with Si/Al=50 was synthesized by hydrothermal method, using cethyltrimethylammonium as template. The protonic H-AlMCM-41 acid form was obtained by ion exchange with ammonium chloride solution and subsequent calcination. The characterization of the material by several techniques showed that a good-quality MCM-41 material was obtained. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) has been submitted to thermal degradation alone, and in presence of the exchanged H-AlMCM-41 catalyst at a concentration of 1: 1 in mass (H-AlMCM-41/HDPE). The reactor was connected on line to a gas chromatograph connected to a mass spectrometer. This process was evaluated by thermogravimetry (TG), from 350 to 600degreesC, under helium dynamic atmosphere, with heating rates of 5.0; 10.0 and 20.0 degreesC/min. From TG curves, the activation energy, calculated using a multiple heating rate integral kinetic method, decreased from 225.5 KJ.mol(-1), for the pure polymer (HDPE), to 184.7 KJ.mol(-1), in the presence of the catalyst (H-AlMCM-41/HDPE).

This work will propose the control of an induction machine in field coordinates with imposed stator current based on theory of variable structure control and sliding mode. We describe the model of an induction machine in field coordinates with imposed stator current and we show the design of variable structure control and sliding mode to get a desirable dynamic performance of that plant. To estimate the inaccessible states we will use a state observer (estimator) based on field coordinates induction machine. We will present the results of simulations in any operation condition (start, speed reversal and load) and with parameters variation of the machine compared to a PI control scheme.

Three seco-iridoids 7-methoxydidcrrosidc, 6'-O-acetyldiderroside and 8-O-tigloyldiderroside, were isolated from the wood bark of Calycophyllum spruceanum together with the known iridoids loganetin, loganin and the seco-iridoids secoxyloganin, kingiside and diderroside. Their structures were elucidated by means of NMR and MS spectral data analysis. Using NOE correlations and coupling constants, the relative stereochernistry of the new derivatives was established. 7-Methoxydiderroside, 6'-O-acetyldiderroside and the known secoxyloganin and diderroside showed in vitro activity against trypomastigote forms of Trypanosonla Cruzi, with IC50 values of 59.0, 90.2, 74,2 and 84.9 mug/mL, respectively and were compared to the standard gentian violet (IC50 7.5 mug/ml). We present new results on the output control of uncertain dynamical systems. The design method uses dynamical compensators to turn the compensated plant into a strictly positive real system, and then chooses the control law-for example, a sliding mode control. This result is compared with another result from the literature which uses static compensators. An example is presented where the control with dynamic compensation works while a static compensation does not.

This paper presents necessary and sufficient conditions to turn a linear time-invariant system with p outputs, m inputs, p greater-than-or-equal-to m and using only inputs and outputs measurements into a Strictly Positive Real (SPR).Two results are presented. In the first, the system compensation is made by two static compensators, one of which forward feeds the outputs and the second back feeds the outputs of the nominal system. The second result presents conditions for the Walcott and Zak variable structure observer-controller synthesis. In this problem, if the nominal system is given by {A,B,C}, then the compensated system is given by {A+GC,B,FC} where F and G are the constant compensation matrices. These results are useful in the control system with uncertainties.

In continuation of our study of the Piperaceae we have isolated several amides, mainly those bearing isobutyl, pyrrolidine, dihydropyridone and piperidine moieties. Bioactivity-guided fractionation of extracts from leaves of Piper arboreum yielded two new amides, N-[10-(13,14-methylenedioxyphenyl)-7(E),9(Z)-pentadienoyl]-pyrrolidine (1), arboreumine (2) together with the known compounds N-[10-(13,14-methylenedioxyphenyl)-7(E)-pentaenoyl]-pyrrolidine (3) and N-[10-(13,14-methylenedioxyphenyl)-7(L, 9(E)-pentadienoyl]-pyrrolidine (4). Catalytic hydrogenation of 3 yielded the amide iV-[10-(13,14-methylenedioxyphenyl)-pentanoyl]-pyrrolidine (5). We also have isolated six amides (6-11) and two antifungal cinnamoyl derivatives (12, 13) from seeds and leaves of Piper tuberculatum. Compounds 1-11 showed antifungal activity as determined by direct bioautography against Cladosporium sphaerospermum while compounds 3-4 and 6-13 also showed antifungal activity against C. cladosporioides. Purpose: to evaluate the incidence and types of major congenital malformations (MCM) in liveborn children conceived by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Methods: a total of 680 liveborn children resulted from 511 couples submitted to ICSI from January, 1999 to December, 2002. Data collection of the children was performed through standardized questionnaire and clinical examination. Of the 511 couples, 366 had been contacted for a sampling of 371 gestations. Of the 680 liveborn, 520 had been evaluated, 250 of them (48.1%) through questionnaire and 270 (51.9%) through questionnaire and physical examination. Two hundred and fifty children were from singleton pregnancies and 270 from multiple pregnancies. Malformations were classified according to the 10th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health. Only MCM were analyzed in this study. The incidence of MCM was compared with that of the general population obtained by the Latin American Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations. The statistical analysis was performed by the χ 2 test (level of significance p<0.05). Results: of the 520 children, 15 presented MCM, resulting in an incidence of 2.9%. There was no difference in relation to the control group (p>0.05), which showed 2.6% incidence of MCM. The most frequent malformations were of cardiac origin (four isolated and two associated), corresponding to 40% of the total. The other types of MCM were: renal (three), neural tube (two), skull (one), cleft lip (one), genital (one), Down syndrome (associated with cardiac malformations) (two), and musculoskeletal (one). Six MCM occurred in children from singleton pregnancies and nine in children from multiple pregnancies. Conclusion: the liveborn children conceived by ICSI presented incidence of major congenital malformations (2.9%) near to the expected for the general population (2.6%). However, to establish the risks of MCM with precision it is necessary to continue the evaluation of the children conceived by ICSI.

Background: Melanoacanthoma (MA) has been described in the oral mucosa as a solitary lesion or, occasionally, as multiple lesions. MA mainly affects dark skinned patients and grows rapidly, showing a plane or slightly raised appearance and a brown to black color. The differential diagnosis includes oral nevi, amalgam tattoos, and melanomas. We report here the case of a 58-year-old black woman who presented multiple pigmented lesions on the hard palate. Case presentation. Based on the differential diagnosis of melanoma, a punch biopsy (4 mm in diameter) was performed. The material was fixed in 10% formalin, embedded in paraffin, and stained with hematoxylin-eosin or submitted to immunohistochemical analysis. Immunohistochemistry using antibodies against protein S-100, melan-A, HMB-45, MCM-2, MCM-5, Ki-67 and geminin was performed. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed strong cytoplasmic immunoreactivity of dendritic melanocytes for proteinS-100, HMB-45 and melan-A.Positive staining for proliferative markers (MCM-2, MCM-5, Ki-67) was only observed in basal and suprabasal epithelial cells, confirming the reactive etiology of the lesion. The diagnosis was oral Melanoacanthoma (MA). Conclusion: The patient has been followed up for 30 months and shows no clinical alterations. MA should be included in the differential diagnosis of pigmented lesions of the oral cavity. © 2013 das Chagas e Silva de Carvalho et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.
