The polysaccharide (VSP) from the gum exudate of quaruba (Vochysia lehmannii) had two components of almost identical M. centred at 24,800, as shown by HSPEC-MALLS. The presence of aggregates was shown since carboxy-reduction gave VSP-RED, which contained low molecular weight components with M-w 19,000 > 5800 and polydispersity ratios dn/dc 0.160 and 0.149, respectively. VSP formed low viscosity aqueous solutions and acid hydrolysis gave Man (30%), Ara (16%), Gal (10%), and Glc (14%). The latter arose partly from GlcA (30%). Methylation analysis revealed mainly neutral units of 2-O- (60%) and 2,3-di-O-substituted Manp (5%), and those of nomeducing ends (8%), 2-O- (3%), and 4-O-substituted Arap and/or 5-O-substituted Araf units (6%). VSP-RED contained Glc (45%), Man (35%), and Ara (13%) and methylation analysis indicated mainly 4-O-substituted Glcp (31%) and 2-O- (51%) and 2,3-di-O-substituted Manp units (5%). A predominant alternating structure for VSP was shown by its C-13 NMR spectrum, which contained 10 main signals and a small one of C-6 of GlcpA. This was confirmed by formation, on partial hydrolysis of VSP, of a tetrasaccharide, which was characterised by NMR spectroscopy and ESI-MS as beta-GlcpA-(1 --> 2)-alpha-Manp-(1 --> 4)-beta-GlcpA-(1 --> 2)-Man, which arose from the main chain, thus confirming VSP to be a glycoglucuronomannan. Pressure drop and minimum fluidization velocity were experimentally studied in a vibro-fluidized bed of inert particles subjected to different vibration intensities during drying of guava pulp. Maltodextrin was added to the pulp in order to prevent stickiness between particles and the consequent bed collapse. Pulps were initially concentrated, resulting in pastes with different soluble solids content, and a constant fraction of maltodextrin was guaranteed in the final pulp samples. The pulp rheological behavior as affected by temperature and total soluble solids content, including maltodextrin, was evaluated and the effect of pulp apparent viscosity on pressure drop and minimum vibro-fluidization velocity were investigated. Two types of inert particles -3.6 mm glass beads and 3 mm Teflon cylinders were tested and, due to lower pressure drop presented by Teflon cylinders during operation of the dry vibro-fluidized bed, these particles were adopted for pulp drying process. Increasing pulp apparent viscosity caused a considerable increase in the vibro-fluidized bed pressure drop during pulp drying and, as a consequence resulted in a larger value of minimum vibro-fluidization velocity. on the other hand, the negative effect of increasing apparent viscosity could be attenuated by increasing the fluidized bed vibration intensity, which could prevent stickiness between particles. Dielectric thermal analysis has been proved as a valuable tool for monitoring the epoxy curing process and the related rheological properties in the fabrication of polymer-matrix composite materials. This technique also has the potential to be applied in the monitoring of magnet impregnation processes as well as in quality control. In this work we present the quantitative evaluation of the viscosity changing and the curing kinetics for a commercial Stycast epoxy resin system at different temperatures through the impedance analysis. The results showed correlation between the real component of the complex impedance and the isothermal reaction extent. Comparing the dielectric analysis result with the viscosity measured by rotational rheometer we observed a similar behavior reported for dynamic mechanic analysis. The results comparison have shown that the kinetics parameters obtained from DSC and DETA analysis showed different sensitivities related to the characteristics of curing stages. We concluded that the dielectric thermal analysis should be applied in quantitative evaluation of cure kinetics.

Experimental viscosity values of sucrose, glucose, and fructose aqueous solutions in a large range of temperatures (0 to 85 degrees C) and concentrations (10 to 60% w/w) that might be encountered in food processes were obtained in order to contribute to extending the available database of food properties. The temperature dependence of viscosity could be adequately described by the Arrhenius model, and the activation energy was well represented by a unique function of the solute volume fraction, valid for sucrose, glucose, and fructose solutions.

The planning of the transportation sector in Brazil has long been the railroads as the main engineering system of the country. Thus, it was used to carry, in addition to the physical integration of the national territory, the consolidation of its domestic market. However, after entering in the 1980s, the planning of the sector is left out, and an inversion of the matrix of development is observed, with share gains in monoculture economy and on development of new areas where agricultural expansion advanced. This situation culminated in logistics blackouts in the 1990s and the resumption of sector planning in the early twenty-first century. At this time, it establishes a new institutional apparatus that ensures the participation of private capital in the sector, as well as a new principle for resolving bottlenecks concentrated regions (economically dynamic), from targeting investments to areas of primary economies that only in recent decades have been incorporated into the national economy.

Waste frying oil has been used to optimize the production of biodiesel. Biodiesel was prepared through sodium ethoxide catalyzed methanolysis from the transesterification of recycled waste frying oil. Optimization of the transesterification reaction for biodiesel production was carried out by means of statistical analyses using ANOVA. The optimum conditions for reaction were the following: a oil methanol mole ratio of 1:9, temperature of 50 degrees C, catalyst mass fraction of 0.9 %, and reaction time of 40 min, which enabled a yield of 98.7 % determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis. The density and viscosity of biodiesel/diesel blends have been determined as a function of composition at several temperatures.

A bifilar Bi-2212 bulk coil with parallel shunt resistor was tested under fault current condition using a 3 MVA single-phase transformer in a 220 V-60 Hz line achieving fault current peak of 8 kA. The fault current tests are performed from steady state peak current of 200 A by applying controlled short circuits up to 8 kA varying the time period from one to six cycles. The test results show the function of the shunt resistor providing homogeneous quench behavior of the HTS coil besides its intrinsic stabilizing role. The limiting current ratio achieves a factor 4.2 during 5 cycles without any degradation.

High-energy ball milling was employed to produce small particles of Gd5Si2Ge2. Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of the ball-milled and bulk Gd5Si2Ge2 samples were investigated through the magnetization measurements. When compared to the bulk material, a significant decrease in saturation magnetization and magnetocaloric effect (-Delta S-max = 4 vs. 20 J/kgK for Delta H = 0-5 T) is observed even after the relatively short ball milling time of 4 h which produced particles with an average size of ca. 0.5 mu m. The ball-milled samples appear to loose a first-order structural transition, present in bulk Gd5Si2Ge2, and display a superparamagnetic behaviour below the corresponding Curie temperatures. The effects of a temperature dependent viscosity in surface nonlinear waves propagating in a shallow fluid heated from below are investigated. It is shown that the (2+1)-dimensional Burgers equation may appear as the equation governing the upper free surface perturbations of a Bénard system, even when the viscosity is assumed to depend on temperature. The critical Rayleigh number for the appearance of waves governed by the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation, however, will be smaller than R=30, which is the critical number obtained for a constant viscosity. © 1992.

The viscosity of two fluoroindate glasses was measured as a function of temperature in the range of 310 °C - 362 °C. In such interval, the viscosity values were found to be similar to those reported for fluorozirconate glasses. The log η - 1/T plots had an unexpected behavior: two viscosity regions that seem to obey Arrhenius equation were identified and the activation energy for viscous flow (EA) for the region near Tg is smaller than the value found above the transition range. This behavior is probably due to structural changes occurred around Tg. The low values of the activation energy for viscous flow obtained for the indium fluoride-based glasses studied, suggest a good resistance against the devitrification process, what can make them suitable for fiber preparation.

We present analytical and numerical results for the specific heat and susceptibility amplitude ratios in parallel plate geometries. The results are derived using field-theoretic techniques suitable to describe the system in the bulk limit, i.e., (L/ξ±)≫ 1, where L is the distance between the plates and ξ± is the correlation length above (+) and below (-) the bulk critical temperature. Advantages and drawbacks of our method are discussed in the light of other approaches previously reported in the literature.
