Material surfaces that provide biomimetic cues, such as nanoscale architectures, have been shown to alter cell/biomaterial interactions. Recent studies have identified titania nanotube arrays as strong candidates for use in interfaces on implantable devices due to their ability to elicit improved cellular functionality. However, limited information exists regarding the immune response of nanotube arrays. Thus, in this study, we have investigated the short- and long-term immune cell reaction of titania nanotube arrays. Whole blood lysate (containing leukocytes, thrombocytes and trace amounts of erythrocytes), isolated from human blood, were cultured on titania nanotube arrays and biomedical grade titanium (as a control) for 2 hours and 2 and 7 days. In order to determine the in vitro immune response on titania nanotube arrays, immune cell functionality was evaluated by cellular viability, adhesion, proliferation, morphology, cytokine/chemokine expression, with and without lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and nitric oxide release. The results presented in this study indicate a decrease in short- and long-term monocyte, macrophage and neutrophil functionality on titania nanotube arrays as compared to the control substrate. This work shows a reduced stimulation of the immune response on titania nanotube arrays, identifying this specific nanoarchitecture as a potentially optimal interface for implantable biomedical devices. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Este artigo reporta às análises e conclusões formuladas a partir de observações feitas sobre violência criminal no recente período democrático da história nacional e que deram origem a dissertação de mestrado intitulada Cultura do Medo: Refl exões Sobre Violência Criminal, Controle Social e Cidadania no Brasil. Essa pesquisa possibilitou refl exões pertinentes a respeito da opinião pública relacionada à segurança, servindo também para um questionamento ético sobre a importância da participação cidadã no processo de consolidação da democracia brasileira e sobre novas formas de dominação existentes em nossa sociedade. Ao destacar como o medo da violência criminal interfere nas nossas relações sociais contemporâneas buscou-se identificá-lo como um instrumento recente de dominação no universo da política.

O objetivo deste texto é analisar o enfoque adotado pelo jornal Folha de S. Paulo no referente ao emprego das células-tronco nas pesquisas científicas, tomando-se para estudo os editoriais, artigos e cartas dos leitores publicados no transcorrer do ano de 2005. A análise dos textos produzidos pelo jornal deixa claro o posicionamento do órgão de imprensa em favor do amplo uso das células-tronco, mas a análise das cartas dos leitores demonstra que nem todos concordam com o que é proposto pelo jornal. Nesse processo, a mídia contribui para a constituição de um conhecimento público sobre os temas referentes à biologia celular e molecular, sem contudo tornar a opção do jornal como única e irrefutável.

Background: This is a position paper from the 2nd International Bone Research Association (IBRA) Symposium for Condylar Fracture Osteosynthesis 2012 was held at Marseille, succeeding the first congress in Strasbourg, France, in 2007. The goal of this IBRA symposium and this paper was to evaluate current trends and potential changes of treatment strategies for mandibular condylar fractures, which remain controversial over the past decades.Methods: Using a cross-sectional study design, we enrolled the consensus based on the panel of experts and participants in the IBRA Symposium 2012. The outcomes of interest were the panel and electronic votes on management of condylar base, neck and head fractures, and panel votes on endoscopic and paediatric condylar fractures. Appropriate descriptive and univariate statistics were used.Results: The consensus derived from 14 experts and 41 participant surgeons, using 12 case scenarios and 27 statements. The experts and participants had similar decision on the treatment of condylar base, neck and head fractures, as well as similar opinion on complications of condylar fracture osteosynthesis. They had a parallel agreement on using open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) as treatment of choice for condylar base and neck fractures in adults. Endoscopic approaches should be considered for selected cases, such as condylar base fractures with lateral displacement. There was also a growing tendency to perform ORIF in condylar head fractures. The experts also agreed to treat children (> 12 years old) in the same way as adults and to consider open reduction in severely displaced and dislocated fractures even in younger children. Nevertheless, non-surgical treatment should be the first choice for children <6 years of age. The decision to perform surgery in children was based on factors influencing facial growth, appropriate age for ORIF, and disagreement to use resorbable materials in children.Conclusions: The experts and participating surgeons had comparable opinion on management of condylar fractures and complications of ORIF. Compared to the first Condylar Fracture Symposium 2007 in Strasbourg, ORIF may now be considered as the gold standard for both condylar base and neck fractures with displacement and dislocation. Although ORIF in condylar head fractures in adults and condylar fractures in children with mixed dentition is highly recommended, but this recommendation requires further investigations. In this paper we show that the electronic properties of multi-open dots structures are strongly modified by even smalt changes in their geometries. Our discussion of these effects is done in terms of the interaction among localized states (dot-like) and extended states (channel-like), from which a Fano resonance situation arises.
