Oils extracted from Cucurbitaceae seeds were characterised for their fatty acid and tocopherol compositions. In addition, some physicochemical characteristics, total phenolic contents and the radical-scavenging activities were determined. Oil content amounted to 23.9% and 27.1% in melon and watermelon seeds, respectively. Physicochemical characteristics were similar to those of other edible oils and the oils showed significant antioxidant activities. Fatty acid composition showed total unsaturated fatty acid content of 85.2–83.5%, with linoleic acid being the dominant fatty acid (62.4–72.5%), followed by oleic acid (10.8–22.7%) and palmitic acid (9.2–9.8%). The oils, especially watermelon seed oil, showed high total tocopherol and phenolic contents. The γ-tocopherol was the predominant tocopherol in both oils representing 90.9 and 95.6% of the total tocopherols in melon and watermelon seed oils, respectively. The potential utilisation of melon and watermelon seed oils as a raw material for food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries appears to be favourable.

The purpose of this work was to determine the proximate composition and fatty acid profiles of the Gastrocnemius pars interna intramuscular fat (IMF) of rhea (Rhea americana) thighs. The birds were bred in captivity, fed with balanced feed (Nutriavestruz Crescimento - Purina) and kept in a pen with grass ad lib. The birds of both sexes used in the research weighed 23 kg on average and were aged about twelve (12) months old. They were subjected to hydric diet (12 h) before slaughtering by electric shock. The rhea meat showed an average moisture, protein, ash and total lipid contents of 74.1%, 22.8%, 1.5% and 1.6%, respectively. It was noticed the predominance of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) in intramuscular fat (IMF), 42.3% and a high percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), 29.7%.. The fatty acids found in higher proportion in rhea IMF were: 18:2n-6 (24.33%), 18: 1n-9 (19.25%),16:0 (13.70%),22: 1n9 (11.40%),18:0 (10.66%),15: 1n-10 (8.62%),24: 1n-9 (2.90%) and 20:4n-6 (1.72%). The PUFA/SFA and n-6/n-3 ratios were 1.06 and 31.30, respectively. The consumption of rhea meat is a healthy alternative to red meat as it points to a lower susceptibility to cardiovascular diseases caused by the high consumption of fat comparatively to the consumption of meat from most domesticated animals.

The electrochemical oxidation of 3,4-dihydroxycinnamic acid, caffeic acid, leads to a stable electroactive poly(caffeic acid) thin film containing quinone moiety on a preactivated glassy polymeric carbon electrode. The properties of the deposited films as well as the stability study under different experimental conditions were investigated. Taking advantage of the electrochemical behavior, an analytical method based on differential pulse voltammetry for determination of caffeic acid in red wine was proposed.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of type of cuttings (apical, intermediate and basal) and different concentrations of IBA (indole-3-butyric acid) on rooting of Red success rose (Rosa sp.) leafy cuttings, during two season of cuttings collection (summer and winter). The investigation was carried out in the farm Irmaos Van Schaik in Holambra-SP, Brazil, from February to April and August to October/1993. The experimental design was a randomized block in a factorial arrangement. It consisted of 12 treatments (3 types of cuttings combined with IBA powder in 4 different concentrations - 0, 1000, 2000 and 4000 ppm) with 3 replicates during 2 seasons. The investigation permitted the following conclusions: the apical and intermediate cuttings showed better results in general when compared to the basal ones in both seasons; the average rooting at the transplanting time were 76%, 70% and 47% (summer) and 80%, 69% and 33% (winter) for apical, intermediate and basal cuttings, respectively; the utilization of IBA did not stimulate rooting. The average rooting for the control cuttings reached 85% (summer) and 78% (winter), regardless the type of cuttings.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of retinoic acid in experimental postinfarction myocardial remodeling. Wistar rats were subjected to myocardial infarction (MI) and treated with retinoic acid (RA), 0.3 mg/(kg · d) (MI-RA, n = 29), or fed a control diet (MI, n = 34). After 6 mo, the surviving rats (MI-RA = 18 and MI = 22) underwent echocardiograms, and isolated hearts were tested for function in vitro. The cross-sectional area of the myocyte (CSA) and interstitial collagen fraction (IC) were measured in a cross section of the heart stained by hematoxylin-eosin and picrosirius red, respectively. The CSA was smaller in the MI-RA group [229 (220, 234) μm 2] [medians (lower quartile, upper quartile)] than in the MI group [238 (232, 241) μm 2] (P = 0.01) and IC was smaller in the MI-RA group [2.4 (1.7, 3.1)%] than in the MI group [3.5 (2.6, 3.9)%] (P = 0.05). The infarct size did not differ between the groups [MI = 44.6 (40.8, 48.4)%, MI-RA = 45 (38.6, 47.2)%]. Maximum rate of rise of left ventricular pressure (+dp/dt) was greater in the MI-RA group (2645 ± 886 mm Hg/s) than in the MI group (2081 ± 617 mm Hg/s) (P = 0.05). The other variables tested did not differ between groups. Retinoic acid supplementation of rats for 6 mo attenuates the ventricular remodeling process after MI. © 2005 American Society for Nutrition.

Cellulose was extracted from lignocellulosic fibers and nanocrystalline cellulose (NC) prepared by alkali treatment of the fiber, steam explosion of the mercerized fiber, bleaching of the steam exploded fiber and finally acid treatment by 5% oxalic acid followed again by steam explosion. The average length and diameter of the NC were between 200-250 nm and 4-5 nm, respectively, in a monodisperse distribution. Different concentrations of the NC (0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5% by weight) were dispersed non-covalently into a completely bio-based thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) derived entirely from oleic acid. The physical properties of the TPU nanocomposites were assessed by Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and Mechanical Properties Analysis. The nanocomposites demonstrated enhanced stress and elongation at break and improved thermal stability compared to the neat TPU. The best results were obtained with 0.5% of NC in the TPU. The elongation at break of this sample was improved from 178% to 269% and its stress at break from 29.3 to 40.5 MPa. In this and all other samples the glass transition temperature, melting temperature and crystallization behavior were essentially unaffected. This finding suggests a potential method of increasing the strength and the elongation at break of typically brittle and weak lipid-based TPUs without alteration of the other physico-chemical properties of the polymer. A mistura de uréia com fertilizantes de características ácidas aplicada ao solo pode aumentar a concentração de íons H+ próximos do grânulo e promover a redução da perda de N por volatilização. O experimento foi desenvolvido em vasos com 15 kg de Latossolo Vermelho textura média, sob túnel plástico, em Botucatu (SP), nos quais foram crescidas plantas de milho (duas plantas por vaso) até o pendoamento (66 dias após a emergência - DAE). Como tratamentos foi realizada a adubação (100 mg dm-3 N), no estádio de cinco folhas (30 DAE) utilizando os seguintes fertilizantes ou misturas físicas: (1) uréia (UR), enriquecida com 15N; (2) sulfato de amônio (SA), enriquecido com 15N; (3) sulfnitro (80% de N-UR e 20% de N-SA no mesmo grânulo); (4) mistura de UR (80% N) e SA (20% N e enriquecido com 15N); (5) mistura de UR (50% N) e SA (50% N), enriquecidos com 15N; (6) mistura de UR (50% N) e SA (50% N e enriquecido com 15N), (7) mistura de UR (50% N) e SA (50% N), enriquecido com 15N, diluídos em água (solução contendo 3% de N) e mais um tratamento que não recebeu N. A mistura de UR e SA não promoveu aumento na recuperação do N da uréia na planta de milho. do total de 15N-fertilizante aplicado, aproximadamente, 67% foram recuperados pela planta de milho (29% nas folhas, 25% no caule e 13% nas raízes) e 6% no solo, com uma perda estimada de 27%. O 15N da uréia foi recuperado em menor quantidade no caule em relação ao N do sulfato de amônio.
