The reduction of loss of lives and assets during bushfire is one of the primary aims or lire management agencies. Traditional fire mitigation strategies include strategic fire hreaks, static water points, management of ignition sources, rapid detection and local response, air attack, and fuel reduction burning. There have been few quantitative studies that assess the success or these strategies. We need to promote 'new' strategies more focused on human hehaviour and community preparedness.
DeJcndable space provides our best strategy for reducing losses during major bushfires. The size or the defendable space depends on the type of house to be defended, who is defending it, and the spatial context of the property. In the urban fi'inge, remnant vegetation on private property often has
high conservation values, and application of traditional mitigation strategies, as well as the vegetation modification required to achieve defendable space, may have significant impacts on conservation and biodiversity values.

The article focuses on the plea in mitigation, one of the most common occurrences in the criminal justice system. Methods of approaching the plea in mitigation typically emphasize the need for the advocate to address the circumstances of the offence and offender. Typically, such matters are put forward as items on a list which the advocate must ensure are addressed during the plea in mitigation. Whilst it is important for those matters to be covered in providing the factual background, or context, of the offender and the offence, it is contended that in a plea in mitigation it is not sufficient nor adequate to simply present such matters to a judicial officer at sentencing and to allow those matters then to be assembled and interpreted by the sentencing judge.

Drawing on transitional labor market (TLM) theory, this introductory chapter highlights major themes, overviews the contributions to this volume and suggests a future agenda for policy makers. The focus of applied research projects has been the impact of post-modem social transformations on systems of social protection, looking through the lens of the labor market and shifts in household and family structure. The Transitional Labor Market project uses the TLM model as a means of developing new thinking on how flexibility and innovation might be paired with social investment and new forms of social protection. TLM theory emphasizes the importance of institutions and of the links between different institutions which frequently operate as policy silos, rather than integrated systems to buffer risks and support capability and enhance employability. The great advantage of the TLM model is that it draws attention to the right places for strategic reform. It does not offer a standard set of institutions to facilitate transitions however.

Corrosion rate measurements based on weight loss (i.e., mild steel immersed for seven days in 0.01 M NaCl) and linear polarization resistance (LPR) techniques have shown that even low concentrations (200 ppm) of cerium and lanthanum cinnamates are able to significantly inhibit corrosion. Of all the compounds investigated in this work Ce(4-methoxycinnamate)3· 2 H2O and La(4-methoxycinnamate)3· 2 H2O compounds exhibited the greatest inhibition and, in comparison with the component inhibitors, a synergy was clearly observed. The mechanism of corrosion inhibition was investigated using cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP) measurements. The results suggest that La(4-nitrocinnamate)3· 2 H2O and Ce(4-methoxycinnamate)3· 2 H2O behave as mixed inhibitors and improve the resistance of steel against localized attack.

The syntheses and structures of the novel Ce–Fe bimetallic complexes [{Fe(sal)2(bpy)}2Ce(NO3)(H2O)3]·EtOH and [{Fe(sal)2(bpy)}4Ce2(H2O)11][salH]2·EtOH·3H2O (salH2 = salicylic acid) suggest Fe3+–sal2− units and Ce–OC(R)O–Fe bridging contribute to the formation of corrosion inhibitive layers on steel surfaces exposed to [Ce(salH)3(H2O)].

Phosphonium cation based ionic liquids (ILs) have become of interest due to their unique chemical and electrochemical stability as well as their promising tribological properties. At the same time, interest has also grown in the use of phosphate and phosphinate based ionic liquids for corrosion protection of reactive metals. In this work we describe the synthesis and characterization of six novel ionic liquids based on the tetraalkylphosponium cation coupled with organophosphate and organophosphinate anions and their sulfur analogues. The conductivity and viscosity of these ILs has been measured and discussed in terms of the nature of the interactions, effect of anion basicity and the extent of ionic character. The reaction of the IL with a ZE41 magnesium aerospace alloy surface is also demonstrated.

Risks exist in every form of construction project. The risks associated with construction projects are often diverse and varied and the management of these risks is nowadays considered compulsory in order to achieve project success. This paper analyses the diverse strategies of risk mitigation that have been employed in construction projects. These strategies are classified into analysed categories of procurement strategies. contingency and co-operative approach along with the utilisation of a designated risk manager. The analysis showed that in order to improve risk mitigation within the construction industry, there is a requirement tor an industry based standard. This standard will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the risk mitigation response technique to risk management.

This paper presents the analysis of a choice experiment designed to estimate willingness-to-pay (WTP) to mitigate damages caused by invasive plant species in a rural community of Nepal. In order to address the cash constraints problem in a subsistence economy, two payment attributes, labour contribution and membership fee, were included in the choice sets. The results reveal that rural farmers have significant WTP for forest management activities, in terms of both cash and labour contributions. The results also suggest that rural farmers value their time in this context at a different rate from the current wage rate.
