Electrical power systems are undergoing highly significant changes in their structures. The emergence of renewable energy units in the power generation sector, the use of high-voltage DC in the power transmission sector, and the prevalence of islanded or integrated microgrids in the distribution sector are the strongest evidence supporting this claim. These changes are mostly the consequences of the increasing energy demand rate, climate change, and environmental challenges, as well as the high investment and maintenance cost of the previous structures. Considering these new conditions and according to the recent development in DC/DC conversion topologies and control techniques, different studies have been conducted on how and why DC microgrids outperform AC microgrids. This study discusses the feasibility of the DC microgrid system according to recent developments in power systems. The efficiency and power loss reduction in DC distribution systems are then analyzed, some of the common strategies and devices for protection systems in such networks are reviewed, and the possible and existing challenges in developing the DC microgrids are highlighted. The mathematical calculations and theories for this evaluation are presented to determine the reliable justification for selecting the appropriate microgrid systems.

In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive backstepping controlleris designed to control the bidirectional power flow (charging/discharging) of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) in a DCmicrogrid under different operating conditions. The controller isdesigned in such a manner that the BESSs can store the excess energyfrom the renewable energy sources (RESs) in a DC microgrid aftersatisfying the load demand and also feeding back the stored energyto the load when RESs are not sufficient. The proposed controller isalso designed to maintain a constant voltage at the DC bus, whereall components of DC microgrids are connected, while controllingthe power flow of BESSs. This paper considers solar photovoltaic(PV) systems as the RES whereas a diesel generator equipped witha rectifier is used as a backup supply to maintain the continuity ofpower supply in the case of emergency situations. The controller isdesigned recursively based on the Lyapunov control theory whereall parameters within the model of BESSs are assumed to beunknown. These unknown parameters are then estimated throughthe adaptation laws and whose stability is ensured by formulatingsuitable control Lyapunov functions (CLFs) at different stages ofthe design process. Moreover, a scheme is also presented to monitorthe state of charge (SOC) of the BESS. Finally, the performanceof the proposed controller is verified on a test DC microgrid undervarious operating conditions. The proposed controller ensures the DCbus voltage regulation within the acceptable limits under differentoperating conditions.

Aluminium nitride (AlN) branched nanostructures with tree shapes and sea urchin shapes are synthesized via a one-step improved DC arc discharge plasma method without any catalyst and template. The branched nanostructures with tree shapes and sea urchin shapes can be easily controlled by the location of collection. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies show that the branches of tree shaped nanostructures grow in a sequence of nanowires, nanomultipeds and nanocombs. The growth mechanisms of these branched nanostructures are discussed in detail. The optical properties of AlN branched nanostructures with tree shapes and sea urchin shapes are investigated.

In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for global minimization of functions represented as a difference of two convex functions. The proposed method is a derivative free method and it is designed by adapting the extended cutting angle method. We present preliminary results of numerical experiments using test problems with difference of convex objective functions and box-constraints. We also compare the proposed algorithm with a classical one that uses prismatical subdivisions. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

This paper presents a robust nonlinear distributed controller design for islanded operation of microgrids in order to maintain active and reactive power balance. In this paper, microgrids are considered as inverter-dominated networks integrated with renewable energy sources (RESs) and battery energy storage systems (BESSs), where solar photovoltaic generators act as RESs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles as BESSs to supply power into the grid. The proposed controller is designed by using partial feedback linearization and the robustness of this control scheme is ensured by considering structured uncertainties within the RESs and BESSs. An approach for modeling the uncertainties through the satisfaction of matching conditions is also provided in this paper. The proposed distributed control scheme requires information from local and neighboring generators to communicate with each other and the communication among RESs, BESSs, and control centers is developed by using the concept of the graph theory. Finally, the performance of the proposed robust controller is demonstrated on a test microgrid and simulation results indicate the superiority of the proposed scheme under different operating conditions as compared to a linear-quadratic-regulator-based controller.

This paper presents the impact of large penetration of wind power on the transient stability through a dynamic evaluation of the critical clearing times (CCTs) by using intelligent agent-based approach. A decentralised multi-agent-based framework is developed, where agents represent a number of physical device models to form a complex infrastructure for computation and communication. They enable the dynamic flow of information and energy for the interaction between the physical processes and their activities. These agents dynamically adapt online measurements and use the CCT information for relay coordination to improve the transient stability of power systems. Simulations are carried out on a smart microgrid system for faults at increasing wind power penetration levels and the improvement in transient stability using the proposed agent-based framework is demonstrated.

In this paper, we presented an optimized fuzzy logic controller using particle swarm optimization for DC motor speed control. The controller model is simulated using MATLAB software and also experimentally tested on a laboratory DC motor. A comparison of the performance of different controllers such as PID controller, fuzzy logic controller and optimized fuzzy logic controller is presented as well. With reference to the results of digital simulations and experiment, the designed FLC-PSO speed controller obtains much better dynamic behavior compared to PID and the normal FLC designed. Moreover, it can acquire superior performance of the DC motor, and also perfect speed tracking with no overshoot. The optimized membership functions (MFs) are obviously proved to be able to provide a better performance and higher robustness in comparison with a regular fuzzy model, when the MFs were heuristically defined. Besides, experimental results verify the ability of proposed FLC under sudden change of the load torque which leads to speed variances.

In this paper, an agent-based distributed control scheme is presented to control single-phase parallel inverters in solar photovoltaic (PV) systems connected to microgrids. A communication assisted multi-agent framework is developed within microgrids where agents perform their tasks in a distributed manner with an aim of stabilizing load voltage and current under normal and faulted conditions through the asymptotic tracking of the reference current signal. The distributed agent-based control scheme requires information from the neighboring agents through communication network to decide control actions. The proposed control scheme utilizes Ziegler-Nichols (Z-N) tuning approach to design proportional integral (PI) controllers for controlling inverters within the multi-agent system (MAS). A microgrid with parallel inverter-connected solar PV systems is considered for simulations under normal and faulted conditions where results show the excellency of the proposed agent-based scheme in comparison to the conventional scheme without MAS.

This paper presents a robust control design scheme for a multidistributed energy resource (DER) microgrid for power sharing in both interconnected and islanded modes. The scheme is proposed for micgrogrids consisting of photovoltaic (PV) units and wind turbine driven doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs). A battery is integrated with each of the wind and solar DER units. The control scheme has two levels: 1) one centralized multi-input–multi-output robust controller for regulating the set reference active and reactive powers and 2) local real and reactive power droop con-trollers, one on each DER unit. The robust control scheme utilizes multivariable H1 control to design controllers that are robust to the changes in the network and system nonlinearities. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is demonstrated through large-distur-bance simulations, with complete nonlinear models, on a test micro-grid. It is found that the power sharing controllers provide excellent performance against large disturbances and load variations during islanding transients and interconnected operation.
