There are some evaluations, critical descriptions of programs and systematic reviews on the benefits to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities from participation in arts programs. These include: improved physical and mental health and wellbeing; increased social inclusion and cohesion; some improvements in school retention and attitudes towards learning; increased validation of, and connection to, culture; improved social and cognitive skills; and some evidence of crime reduction.The effects of arts programs can be powerful and transformative. However, these effects tend to be indirect.For example, using these programs to reduce juvenile anti-social behaviour largely work through diversion: providing alternative safe opportunities to risk taking, maintenance of social status, as well as opportunities to build healthy relationships with Elders and links with culture.Art forms such as song, dance and painting, coupled with ceremony, are integral to cultural continuity and cultural maintenance in Indigenous Australian communities.

This paper contends that the arts provide a foundation for the intensifying effort that leadership, creative aptitude and expertise are making to existing and emerging professions. Participation in arts-based (school and/or community) programs 'have proven to be educational, developmentally rich, and cost-effective ways to provide students the skills they need to be productive participants in today's economy' (Psilos, 2002, p. 2). In particular, this paper explores the relationship between leadership development in young people through their engagement with arts education experiences, specifically the capacity of the arts to develop the generic skills of communication, team work, problem-solving and creative interpretation-skills considered essential for productive participation in today's economy and skills that augment leadership potential.

This thesis utilised the inductive Grounded Community Development Research method to examine programs that aim to educate men in non-violent, abusive and controlling ways of relating to others. This study concluded with specific recommendations including working more closely with the legal system, assessing long term program outcomes and improving partner contact.

Strategies to combat the many effects of mental illness on individuals and families need to go beyond psychopharmacology and institutional care. Evidence has been mounting for the healing and treatment role of art in clinical and health care settings. Art, in its many forms, has also been suggested as one valuable tool in addressing social exclusion in people with many forms of disability including mental illness.
This paper draws on Masters Research findings to present a discussion of the historical and the current landscape of Art for Health Programs with special emphasis on art programs targeting people with chronic mental illness. Recent studies in the UK and Scotland indicate that participation in the arts can enhance recovery, social connectedness and cultural inclusivity.

In this research the authors tackled the issue of synthesising the findings of two independent research programs with common themes into a coherent analysis of teaching and learning across disciplines and school sectors. Through an ongoing dialogue and iterative exploration of emerging themes a synthesis generated new understandings of the use of narrative pedagogies in maths, science and technology, and the aesthetic nature of such learning experiences. This process demonstrates how a comparative lens enables a higher level of analysis of both research programs and generates broader narratives that can be applied to contexts beyond the original research foci.

Using focus group interviews and individual stories of participants from secondary data, we  illuminate the role of Multicultural Arts Victoria (MAV) in Australia in how it promotes cultural  inclusion through programs of social and civic service. Our findings confirm the significance of  cultural inclusion and the potentially useful role of arts in creating inclusive organisations and  communities. We further develop a framework of cultural inclusion in the workplace to provide  a holistic understanding of the cultural inclusion process that can lead to the development of  inclusive workplaces. As social inclusion is central to Australia’s national identity, this article helps  researchers and practitioners to understand how cultural inclusion and inclusive organisational  theories collide and complement each other to create inclusive organisations.

Ethnic radio was initiated in Australia to fulfill the issues of migrants through their language. This research, using the Sinhala language listeners in Melbourne as the target group analysed how the ethnic radio programs helped to achieve these goals.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify the value of the arts play in public spaces in replicating a contemporary commons. Design/methodology/approach – The study is an exploratory investigation which uses a case study of cultural events in public parks – the Vancouver Parks Board’s fieldhouse residency program (2012-2015). The study uses content analysis of the social media sites created for these projects to identify how the sites and the cultural events were valued by stakeholders and participants. Findings – The paper finds that, in combination, the park events and the social media discussion of them function as a form of the commons, in which new urban communities are formed or defined around specific common social interests. Practical implications – It is anticipated that cultural programs will increasingly interact with common public places. Social implications – The study supports the increased use of and recognition of public places as culturally significant. Tertiary Arts educators are exhorted to offer The Australian Curriculum: The Arts (Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts) in their teacher education programs. This paper situates itself across two interstate universities (Deakin in Victoria and Griffith in Queensland) where both authors are music educators at these institutions. They discuss the two different ways that primary Arts education is offered at their universities by focusing on the Bachelor of Primary course (program/degree). The focus at Griffith University is on integrating the Arts whereas at Deakin University, the Arts are taught as a discipline within the unit (subject). Across both universities two teaching units for primary Arts education is core within the four-year program. Drawing on the author’s narrative reflection, observation, student questionnaire data, anecdotal feedback and student end of semester evaluations we discuss two different methods of delivery, assessment and challenges the units present to the authors and students. Though tertiary Arts educators are challenged to be inclusive of a rich and diverse arts curriculum as music educators we question whether the students are merely surfing the crest of the wave or being firmly planted in the ground to effectively implement music education in their future primary classrooms. We invite dialogue with other music educators who face similar situations where the delivery of music education is not located within the Arts and is dependent on staffing, resourcing and time limits and in some situations is almost drowning.
