ASA theory is one of the most important explanations of behaviour in organisations. Developed by Professor Ben Schneider, it is the idea that organisations contain similar types of people because they attract, select and retain people similar to those already employed by the organisation. This homogeneity explains why organisations are different to each other. Although a lot is known about attrition, little is known about the attraction and selection phases. This book contains a series of empirical studies that explore whether organisations attract and select people who hold the values of the people already employed by the organisation. The results of these studies cast doubt on how universal ASA theory might be and suggest that the initial employment decisions that people make are more about choosing their vocation than their employer.

Introduction and Aims.To examine client-reported reasons for missed early appointments at a drug and alcohol treatment service and to compare characteristics of those who missed appointments with those who attended. Design and Methods. Clients who missed a first or second appointment between 1 May and 31 August 2007 at a public community-based outpatient treatment facility were invited to participate in a semistructured telephone interview.This consisted of an open-ended question asking the reason(s) for nonattendance, followed by a questionnaire of items for therapeutic alliance and service satisfaction, perceived impact of substance use and previous treatment experience, mostly rated on Likert scales. Database information on demographic and clinical variables was gathered for all clients who were accepted for treatment within the study time frame. Characteristics of those who missed a first or second appointment (n = 66) were compared with those who attended at least their first two appointments (n = 97). Results. Of clients who missed their appointments, 80.6% provided reasons for nonattendance, which included extraneous factors (50.0%), service shortcomings (29.7%), no further need for service (16.2%) and motivational ambivalence (4.1%). They generally had high ratings of therapeutic alliance and service satisfaction and identified their substance use as having a negative impact on their lives. Clients who missed appointments were more likely to be male, unmarried and have a history of polysubstance use. Discussion and Conclusions. Extraneous issues relating to the client may be a dominant obstacle in early treatment engagement. Efforts to overcome these issues may therefore improve early engagement.

Objective To evaluate outcome and client and referrer satisfaction with the service provided by a Mood and Anxiety Disorders Unit (MADU).

Method MADU was a specialized clinical service for the assessment and management of individuals suffering with affective and anxiety disorders. Clients were referred to MADU from a variety of health service providers. A telephone survey of 30 clients and 20 referrers who have used the services of MADU was conducted, investigating outcome satisfaction with the service provided by MADU.

Results Clients and referrers reported a high level of satisfaction with the service provided by MADU. There was a high degree of adherence to treatment recommendations. The mean Patient Global Impression of Improvement (PGI) rating by the clients before the MADU assessment was 2.74 (SD = 1.27). In comparison the mean PGI rating at the time of follow-up was 6.64 (SD = 1.91).

Conclusions Specialist mood disorders units are a useful and potentially cost-effective additional service included as a part of a mental health service.

While weight, health, diet, and exercise receive constant media and governmental attention, relatively little is known about the influence of body image in the food consumption process. Moreover, there is general consensus within the literature that the factors that influence consumption behavior can have a different impact on different consumer groups. Body image, for example, is perceived to be a modulating force in the consumption behavior of young women. As a result, there is a need for an empirically based understanding of the factors that influence food-purchasing and consumption behavior among this group. Studies have investigated the links between perceived body image and food-purchasing behavior. In 18- to 30-year-old women, it has been shown that personal values, vanity, physical health, and perceived body image were major factors of influence in the purchasing and consumption decisions of this group. It was also identified that respondents across these studies engaged in healthy and unhealthy consumption practices in order to achieve their perceived body image ideals.

This paper examines an individual’s entrepreneurial adoption decisions to use mobile banking for both business and social reasons. A conceptual model based on social cognitive theory is developed to explain an individual’s propensity to adopt mobile banking. The theoretical framework examines how advertising, experience, perceived risk, learning inclination, and entrepreneurial proclivity influence a person’s intention to use mobile banking. This paper stresses the role of financial risk in determining a person’s intention to use mobile banking and whether their entrepreneurial nature is influenced by their experience and advertising they are subjected to about the advantages or disadvantages of mobile banking. This paper ties together research on technological innovation with entrepreneurship and learning studies. The author stresses the importance for financial institutions to market the innovativeness of mobile banking whilst addressing security concerns. The impact of a person’s social environment through personal contacts and acquaintances underpins social cognitive theory and helps to understand the motives for a person adopting mobile banking. The paper integrates mobile banking literature with current thinking on the importance of entrepreneurship and learning influences to how a person adopts a technological innovation.

E-readers, or devices designed primarily for reading e-books, are taking the world by storm. Several papers in library studies and education have examined e-book consumption for academic reading. However, no previous marketing study has investigated consumers’ adoption of e-readers for pleasure reading. We address this gap by testing an extended version of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) with emotional attachment (TAME) in this context. Consumers’ attachment to paper books is proposed as a barrier to their adoption of e-readers. This speaks to a key deficiency of the TAM, being its focus on cognition at the expense of consumer emotion. A three-phase study finds support for the TAME, with 64% of the variance explained in consumers’ intentions to adopt e-readers. Emotional attachment to paper books is found to be weakly and negatively associated with consumers’ attitude toward using e-readers. The qualitative findings suggest that e-reader adoption may not involve a binary choice between paper and e-formats.

The article discusses the prequalification criteria that are believed to be good indicators of future construction performance by both clients and contractors. A crucial task in contractor prequalification is to establish a set of decision criteria through which the capabilities of contractors are measured and judged. The use of universal prequalification criteria seems to be a widely researched utopian" ideal. Standard prequalification criteria provides more consistency across the industry.

Contractor prequalification is concerned with assessing the likelihood of contractors meeting client and project requirements. The criteria used in this assessment have been developed in a largely idiosyncratic manner to date and with little or no consultation with the contractors affected. As a result, contractors are faced with a variety of calls for information by prequalifiers, the collection of which can be quite costly. This is leading to expensive duplication of effort by contractors in providing what is often similar information but in different formats. Furthermore, previous research has shown that the benefits of the information to prequalifiers are uncertain - many prequalifiers analyse the information in only a cursory manner. What is needed is some form of cost-benefit analysis to be carried out which will establish a common set of criteria for all to use.

As a precursor to this, the research described in this paper compares the different attitudes of both prequalifiers and contractors to prequalification criteria commonly in use in the Australian building industry. This was carried out via a postal questionnaire involving 49 contractors and 15 prequalifiers across Australia. The respondents were divided into three groups; (1) contractors doing work for mainly private sector clients and (2) contractors doing work for mainly private sector clients, and (3) construction prequalifiers (clients).

The results show that both clients and contractors have divergent opinions on the importance and value of the criteria in use. The possible reasons for these differences are discussed and the likely implications for future research in the topic.

This research provides a deeper insight into the performance of Alliances for the construction of road, rail and water projects. The results review 18 public infrastructure projects across Australia that utilized the Alliance form of procurement. The results were based on interviews which addressed the most important management issues impacting on the performance of Alliances. The respondents were selected from a sample of members of the Alliance Leadership Teams (ALT) and the Alliance Management Teams (AMT) that had recently completed a range of infrastructure projects. Results revealed that communication and trust between the ALT and AMT teams was a major issue that impacted on the effectiveness of the Alliance. Further, the research identified several factors that are necessary preconditions for the Alliance to be successful. The study reported on the perceived performance of Alliances to deliver in the key areas that was identified by the client organizations prior to commencement of the project. There are an increasing number of international organizations contemplating construction projects using “Alliancing”. The results of this paper will assist clients in making more informed decisions about the possibility that this form of procurement will be effective in meeting the needs of the project and its stakeholders.

If a program is to be successful for clients, it is important to be able to assess the outcomes before and after having been in the program. In order to draw some conclusions about the success of SAAP the following article attempts to summarise briefly the changes in circumstances experienced by SAAP clients when compared with their pre-SAAP circumstances.

This research is concerned with identifying prequalification criteria that both clients and contractors believe are good indicators of future construction performance. Criteria used in the past have been developed by clients in a largely idiosyncratic manner with little or no consultation with the contractors affected. The methodology chosen for the research was a survey which probed stakeholder attitudes to commonly used prequalification criteria. This was carried out via a postal questionnaire involving contactors and clients across Australia. The data was analysed using Discriminant Analysis, which is a multivariate statistical approach that determines the differences between groups. The research is structured around 39 criteria that were developed as part of a whole-of–government task force into best practice in procurement. The findings identified the most important criteria from both a client’s perspective, and a contractor’s perspective. The purpose was to discover if those differences reduce the effectiveness of the procurement process. This paper contributes to a more clarified understanding of the impact or contrasting views between the stakeholders involved in the prequalification process. This work is innovative because it is one of a few pieces of research that showed that clients and contractors do actually have divergent opinions on the importance of some criteria currently relied upon in the decision making process. The most important prequalification criteria are identified and possible reasons for these differences are discussed.
